Disney Legend Kim Irvine Announces Retirement After 55 Years of Imagineering Magic

It’s the end of an era in the world of Disney design: Kim Irvine, a beloved and legendary Disney Imagineer, is officially retiring after a staggering 55-year career bringing magic to life. According to reporting from MiceChat, the longtime Director of Concept Design at Walt Disney Imagineering is hanging up her Mouse ears, leaving behind a legacy that’s stitched into the very fabric of Disneyland history.

Imagineer Kim Irvine is retiring from Walt Disney Company after years

For Irvine, Imagineering wasn’t just a job — it was the family business. Irvine is the daughter of Disney animator Harvey Toombs and Leota Toombs, the latter of whom famously became the face of Madame Leota in the Haunted Mansion. Kim joined Walt Disney Imagineering (then WED Enterprises) in 1970 straight out of high school — initially planning to only stay for the summer. Little did she know she’d spend more than five decades shaping Disneyland and Disney Parks worldwide.

Some of her most iconic work includes:

  • Decorating Sleeping Beauty Castle for Disneyland’s 50th anniversary in 2005
  • Bringing Disney characters into “it’s a small world” with updated costumes and storytelling in 2009
  • Refurbishing the Jungle Cruise in 2021 with new, culturally updated scenes
  • Designing the Disney Dream Suite, now the Dream Suite at Disneyland
  • Serving as the model and voice for Haunted Mansion Holiday’s Madame Leota, continuing her mother’s legacy

She also put her creative stamp on countless small but impactful details: themed trash cans, vending carts, and maintenance aesthetics throughout the park — proving no detail was too small for storytelling.

Her contributions were formally recognized in 2011 with a lifetime achievement award from the Themed Entertainment Association, but for fans, Kim Irvine’s greatest award will forever be the joy and wonder she sparked in the parks.

While Kim may be retiring from her official role, her legacy will continue to float through the Haunted Mansion, twinkle in Sleeping Beauty Castle, and sparkle in every pixie-dusted corner of the parks she helped build and reimagine. Thank you, Kim, for 55 years of dreams come true!

Resellers Selling MuppetVision 3D Glasses Following Show’s Closure

Disney’s Hollywood Studios bids farewell to a beloved classic, and online marketplaces are already teeming with mementos.

With the heartfelt closure of MuppetVision 3D, a staple at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for over three decades, online resellers have wasted no time in capitalizing on the moment. Listings for the iconic purple 3D glasses, once a necessary tool for experiencing the zany antics of Kermit and Miss Piggy, are now appearing across various e-commerce platforms.

Related-Muppets Courtyard Completely Walled Off with Planters

mup

This unfortunate, though increasingly common, phenomenon sees resellers quickly moving to acquire and sell items from popular or newly closed Disney attractions. The allure of owning a piece of park history, especially from an attraction with such a dedicated fanbase and historical significance as MuppetVision 3D, drives this secondary market.

Related-Disney Sets Timeframe for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Closure and Muppets Transformation

mup

Now that MuppetVision 3D has officially ceased public operations (with its final day being June 7, 2025), resellers have begun listing the distinctive purple 3D glasses for sale online. Early listings show prices starting around $40, with some quick sales already recorded and several pairs still available. More ambitiously, some listings are advertising the glasses as specifically being from “the last show,” commanding a significantly higher asking price of $99.95 or best offer. These higher-priced listings are already attracting numerous “watchers,” indicating a strong interest from collectors and eager fans.

While initial asking prices vary widely from $20 starting bids to nearly $100 for a single pair, actual sold prices for items purchased on or after June 7 reflect a range of $15.96 to $41, demonstrating the immediate demand.

Officially the FINAL WEEK to Enjoy Muppets Courtyard before it Closes Forever

The appeal extends beyond just the glasses. Several listings bundle the MuppetVision 3D glasses with other commemorative items, such as pressed pennies. The final days of MuppetVision 3D and its neighboring PizzeRizzo saw extended queues, not just for a last experience, but also for the pressed penny machine, highlighting the high demand for tangible souvenirs from the closing area. One such combination listing of glasses and pennies reportedly sold for $55 on the evening of June 7.

This trend is not isolated to MuppetVision 3D. A similar surge in reselling occurred with the closure of “It’s Tough to Be a Bug!” in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Listings from that attraction’s closure still feature its distinctive black, antennae-adorned “bug eye” glasses alongside those from MuppetVision 3D. These “bug eye” glasses had only made a reappearance at the attraction on March 16 for its own final day of operation, having been replaced by the purple 3D glasses earlier in February. Reseller “lots” of these glasses first began to surface online in March following “It’s Tough to Be a Bug!”‘s closure.

mup

It’s also important to note that this reseller phenomenon isn’t exclusive to Disney. Universal theme parks have also faced similar situations. Notably, several limited-edition Universal Epic Universe grand opening day items, including special merchandise only available during the media preview, quickly appeared on reseller websites. The highly coveted Epic Universe grand opening medallion, for example, was listed for staggering prices ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 each.

As beloved attractions like MuppetVision 3D make way for new experiences, the secondary market for park memorabilia continues to thrive, fueled by eager fans and collectors looking to hold onto a piece of cherished theme park history.

Disneyland Adds Trumpet Embellishments to 70th Anniversary Banners

After weeks of anticipation and reported delays, the trumpet decorations showcased in the concept art for the Disneyland Resort 70th anniversary celebration have finally been installed at Sleeping Beauty Castle. They’re a beautiful addition, just in time for the festivities!

After weeks of anticipation and reported “delays,” the trumpet decorations and “70” emblems have finally been installed at Sleeping Beauty Castle, completing the 70th-anniversary banners and medallion!

This new decor features two crossed gold-toned trumpets on each banner lining the drawbridge to the castle. Perched atop these trumpets is a circular, brushed gold badge with the number “70” prominently displayed. Behind the numbers, a subtle floral pattern blooms in shades of purple, pink, blue, and gold, adding an elegant touch to the celebration’s look.

A swirl of stars crafted from flat gold-toned metal now elegantly wraps around the torches on the banner poles. The “70” emblems on these smaller decorations perfectly match the main medallion positioned above the castle’s entrance. With these final additions, Sleeping Beauty Castle now truly mirrors the concept art for the 70th anniversary celebration, which was initially unveiled late last year. The Disneyland Resort’s 70th-anniversary festivities kicked off on May 16, 2025, and are set to continue through summer 2026.

Hall of Presidents Lobby Reopens, Trump Update Still Pending

While the main show is still undergoing its refurbishment, the return of the lobby means guests can once again step into an air-conditioned haven and escape the scorching temperatures.

Step inside the Hall of Presidents lobby, and you’ll find it largely unchanged since the attraction closed its doors in January. Guests can once again take in the historical artwork, presidential portraits, and exhibits that highlight pivotal moments and figures in U.S. presidential history. Plus, the benches and seating are still there, offering a cool, shaded spot to take a break.

The Hall of Presidents officially closed for refurbishment on January 20, 2025. Many have been expecting an update to include a figure of President Donald Trump after his return to office. However, Disney hasn’t yet announced when the attraction will reopen or what specific changes we can expect to see in the show.

The Hall of Presidents has a long-standing tradition of closing for updates after each new president’s inauguration. For instance, following Joe Biden’s inauguration as the 46th president on January 20, 2021, Disney promptly closed the attraction to incorporate his animatronic. It then reopened on August 3, 2021, featuring a speech by Biden. Similarly, during Donald Trump’s first term, the attraction closed on January 17, 2017, and welcomed guests back on December 18, 2017, with a speaking role for Trump’s figure.
