Largest-Ever HBCU Week Coming to Walt Disney World Resort Next Month

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Sept. 20, 2022) – High school students from across the Southeast and beyond will descend on Walt Disney World Resort next month for the largest-ever HBCU Week featuring a huge college fair, a parade of high-stepping marching bands, a fierce battle of the bands and a live ESPN broadcast.

A record number of high school students (more than 5,000) and Historically Black Colleges and University representatives (nearly 50) will take part in the weekend event, October 7-9, 2022, when more than $10 million in scholarships are expected to be awarded, which would be another event record. Since 2017, more than 3,500 on-the-spot admissions have been offered, along with more than $23 million in scholarships.

First HBCU Event on Disney Property

This is the first time in its five-year history that the Historically Black Colleges and University Week Foundation is hosting its annual event at Walt Disney World Resort, which is expanding the foundation’s ability to stage new and more high-profile activities for its attendees. As a result, this year there will be a parade of HBCU bands down Main Street, U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom Park; a battle of the bands at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex along with the college fair; a live broadcast of ESPN’s First Take show featuring HBCU Week ambassador Stephen A. Smith and show host Molly Qerim; and Lunch and Learn seminars for students to gain educational and career insights.

Delaware State, Bethune Cookman, North Carolina A&T, Winston-Salem State, and Alcorn University will participate in the parade at Magic Kingdom and compete in the Battle of the Bands.

Disney Collaboration

Disney’s involvement in Historically Black Colleges and University Week is part of a relationship between HBCU Week Foundation and Disney on the Yard, an initiative focused on deepening Disney’s engagement with HBCUs. By working more closely with HBCUs, Disney aims to continue building a long-term pipeline of Black employee talent through the development of student internships, mentorship opportunities, career and employee spotlights, scholarships, and more.

Admission and Tickets

Disney theme park admission and reservations are required for entry to Magic Kingdom Park for the HBCU Week band parade. Tickets are also required for the Battle of the Bands at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. There is no admission charge for all other Historically Black Colleges and University events.

Now available at most Lowe’s Home Improvement Stores is the Disney Halloween Collection, featuring the Nightmare before Christmas.

When walking in guests were greeted by a HUGE Jack Skellington inflatable. It was almost as tall as the ceiling.

There were quite a few inflatables here at Lowe’s. One of my favorites was Disney’s Haunted Mansion Hitchhikers Ghost Doom Buggy which you can actually buy online here.

The shelves at my local Lowe’s in North Carolina were pretty full. They had almost every item in stock and a few of these items made their way into my cart. Most of the items are still available online as well.

They also had Nightmare before Christmas and Haunted Mansion standable plush characters who would look perfect on a mantle or on a bar, these are what I brought home and exactly where they are going to go.

What was missing that I really wanted was the Disney 3-ft Lighted Lilo & Stitch Vampire Inflatable. Lucky for me it was still in stock online.

I was able to take a video that gives you a better look at the Disney Halloween items available inside my local Lowes’s Home Improvement store.

The Disney Wish features three different family dining locations, each with their own stories to share – 1923, Worlds of Marvel, and Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure. Each dining room offers something unique and serves up some truly delicious dishes that will leave you wanting to order more – which you can!

1923

1923, named after the year The Walt Disney Company was founded, pays homage to the golden age of animation and embraces that old Hollywood feel as sketches and models of animation classics can be found all throughout the dining room. Harbor Nights is returning to Loews Portofino Bay Hotel next month. Harbor Nights La Dolce Vita is a lively event on the Harbor Piazza featuring wines, chef-inspired food stations, and a live band. It’s a truly authentic Italian evening set beside a picturesque harbor that’s perfect for a date night or a fun night out with friends. The glow of twinkling lights, the aroma of Italian cuisine, the sounds of music in the air. It’s not the Mediterranean coast, but it is la dolce vita – the sweet life – at its finest at Universal Orlando Resort.

What: Loews Portofino Bay Hotel’s food and wine event, Harbor Nights, returns to the picturesque Harbor Piazza this fall. Guests can celebrate ‘la dolce vita’ – the sweet life – in a place inspired by the beauty and charm of the seaside village of Portofino, Italy. The evening features select wines, sparkling wines and expertly-prepared food from each of the hotel’s restaurants, along with live music.

Baby white rhino, Mylo, has celebrated his first birthday at Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Mylo was born on September 8, 2021. He is now one year old and getting the hang of being a member of the rhino crash!

Dr. Mark Penning shared a birthday post on Instagram:

“Happy #WorldRhinoDay! 🦏

Can you believe Mylo is already a year old? He’s growing up so fast! As he continues to mature, he’s perfecting the natural behaviors he learned from his family at an early age, like wallowing in the mud, which helps protect his skin from the sun and keeps him cool.

Visit Mylo and the rest of the white rhino crash on Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.”

Extra Performance of Mickey’s Celebration Cavalcade added to Magic Kingdom schedule

An extra performance of Mickey’s Celebration Cavalcade will be coming to Magic Kingdom starting next month. It will be replacing one of the Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade performances. That parade will only perform once per day starting next month.

The Disney World website describes Mickey’s Celebration Cavalcade as:

“Magic Is Calling
Answer the call! Don’t miss this lively, new cavalcade floating through Magic Kingdom park as part of The World’s Most Magical Celebration.

Find your favorite spot along the parade route—from Frontierland through Liberty Square down Main Street, U.S.A.—and party with the EARidescent 8 as they rock out in their snazzy new 50th anniversary looks.

Starting October 9, the cavalcade will perform 5 times a day: 10:45 am, 11:55 am, 1:40 pm, 4:25 pm, and 5:55 pm. Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade performances will be reduced to one per day starting on the 9th. The parage will perform at 3 pm each day.

Animal Kingdom Beacon of Magic to return on October 1st

Nighttime magic will soon be returning to Disney’s Animal Kingdom! Guests will once again be able to experience the Beacon of Magic and Tree of Life Awakenings starting October 1.

Show times are now listed online for Tree of Life Awakenings on October 1. The nighttime projections will start at 7:45 pm. The park closes at 8 pm so that is the perfect way to end your day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom!

Tree of Life Awakenings hasn’t been performed since April. Now that it’s getting darker earlier in the day, the projections will be returning! Are you looking forward to seeing these beautiful lights and projections once again?

Whoopi Goldberg wants to do Sister Act 3 with Jenifer Lewis

Whoopi Goldberg is hoping she can film “Sister Act 3” with Jennifer Lewis.

The two worked together in the originsl Sister Act film. Jennifer Lewis, who appeared on the program to promote her new book, Walking in My Joy: In These Streets, told the Oscar-winning actress that she’s “so ready” to film the movie, and also recalled teaching Goldberg how to sing on the set of the first film back in 1992.

Disney officially announced that Sister Act 3was in development with Goldberg back in 2020. Whoopi Goldberg will reprise her role as Deloris Wilson for the film and will act as producer alongside Tyler Perry. The premiere date for the sequel is yet to be determined.

Sister Act and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit are now available to stream on Disney+.

David Alan Grier joins Beauty and the Beast TV Special

David Alan Grier will play Cogsworth in this year’s “Beauty and the Beast” TV special.

The Tony Award-winning actor, Grier, is joining a cast full of stars!

Josh Groban, who previously recorded a song for the 2017 “Beauty and the Beast” live-action movie, will play the baneful Beast. Tony- and GRAMMY-nominated acclaimed Broadway star Joshua Henry has been tapped to play antagonist Gaston, while EGOT winner and legend Rita Moreno will serve as the night’s narrator, taking viewers on a journey through the classic enchanted tale. Presented by The Wonderful World of Disney, the highly anticipated two-hour reimagining of the beloved story of “Beauty and the Beast” will be taped in front of a live audience at Disney Studios and will air THURSDAY, DEC. 15 (8:00-10:00 p.m. EST), on ABC and on Disney+ the next day.

As previously announced, five-time GRAMMY- and Academy Award^®-winning singer-songwriter H.E.R. will play the role of Belle, with Jon M. Chu set to executive produce the special, and Hamish Hamilton set to direct. Additional talented cast, whose performances will be seamlessly woven through the original feature film, will be announced at a later date.

Offical Trailer for Disney's Strange World

The first full trailer for Disney’s upcoming “Strange World” movie is now available to watch! You can check it out below!

Disney’s upcoming animated adventure, Strange World, will feature the vocal talents of Jake Gyllenhaal (Searcher Clade), Dennis Quaid (Jaeger Clade, Searcher’s Father), Gabrielle Union (Meridian Clade, Searcher’s Wife), Jaboukie Young-White (Ethan Clade, Searcher and Meridian’s Son), and Lucy Liu (Callisto Mal, Leader of Avalonia). Alan Tudyk has also been cast in the film, but his character remains a mystery at the time of writing.

A synopsis of the film reads, “The legendary Clades are a family of explorers whose differences threatened to topple their latest and most crucial mission.” Strange World is currently set to premiere in theaters on November 23, 2022, in time for the holidays.

Helmed by Don Hall (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) and co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer “Raya and the Last Dragon”), and produced by Roy Conli (Oscar®-winning “Big Hero 6,” “Tangled”).

Disney recently released light up headbands inspired in different villains like Maleficent, Ursula and now Hades. These headbands are perfect for this Halloween season even if you are not planning on dressing up as them.

The Hades headband is blue just like the villains and features his hair lighting up in different shades of blue. It’s a very simple design but it works great!

You can find it at Disneyland and Walt Disney World retail stores for $30. This headband is not available on shopDisney yet but we hope to see it there soon. In the meantime, you can take a look at the video of this fun headband in our instagram post:
