Disneyโs Female Veterinarians Take Lead Role Caring for Creatures Great and Small
If youโre a fan of the Disney+ series, Magic of Disneyโs Animal Kingdom, you may notice that there are a lot of women on the show. Female veterinarians take a leading role in managing the health and wellbeing of more than 5,000 animals at Walt Disney World Resort. And while many people may believe that most veterinarians are male, women actually outnumber men in this profession!
Ever wonder what itโs like to lock eyes with a silverback gorilla or figure out how to perform a CT scan on a handsome and charismatic eel? How about saving not one but TWO of the most endangered species in the world?
Thatโs exactly what a team of female superheroes is doing at Walt Disney World Resort. Harnessing the power of innovation, this team of medical professionals uses their brains, muscles and hearts to manage some of the most challenging cases in modern-day veterinary medicine. To successfully do their jobs, each one of these smart, quick-thinking, and agile professionals must know every individual species of the more than 5,000 animals at Walt Disney World โ from the tiniest spider to the largest elephant.
And then, they need to know their anatomy โ from gills and glands to horns and hoofs. And just as importantly, they must master nearly every veterinary procedure on the continuum of life. They are either saving a life, bringing a new one into the world, or making one better.
โAt any given time, we might be called in to anesthetize a snake or an elephant or a shark โ sometimes all in the same day,โ according to Dr. Betsy who has been practicing veterinary medicine for 18 years and is now a board-certified specialist in zoological medicine. โBecause animals canโt talk to us and tell us their ailments, and every case is different, itโs a challenge to figure out all the pieces of the puzzle.โ
One such puzzle recently solved was the case of an ailing frogfish from The Seas with Nemo & Friends at EPCOT. When healthy, these small, subtropical fish are known for their ability to camouflage themselves for protection. But this little lady named Pumpkin was not showing her true colors. Instead, she was lethargic and not eating. After carefully anesthetizing this tiny fish, staff veterinarian Dr. Natalie saw on the x-ray that Pumpkin had a broken jaw. While she is incredibly adept at treating aquatic animals, setting a broken jaw for a less than one-pound fish was not an everyday procedure. To stabilize the jaw, Dr. Natalie used dental material traditionally used on people to help fuse the two bones. She then used a small cylindrical tube as a kind of cast to keep the jaw from moving while the dental material worked its magic. Within a few weeks, Pumpkin was feeling like her old self, swimming around and camouflaging in a range of colors and was able to rejoin her mate back at EPCOT.
โI always had an interest in healing animals,โ said Dr. Natalie whose childlike spirit and lifesaving instincts can be traced back to the first time she saved an animalโs life. โWhen I was 13, I nursed back to health a snapping turtle I found at the side of a river and 38 years later, Hagar is still healthy, living with me and my family.โ
Like Dr. Betsy, Dr. Natalie is a board-certified specialist in zoological medicine who easily applies her same innovative approach to the wellbeing of land-roaming animals as well as sea-faring ones.
Recently, Dr. Natalie examined a sweet, 12-year-old western lowland gorilla named Lilly who was having some painful stomach issues and was often vomiting. A visit to Disneyโs advanced veterinary hospital showed that Lilly had some gas bubbles trapped in her intestinal wall and outside her bladder. In humans, this condition can be treated through surgery, but Dr. Natalie didnโt want to risk doing something too invasive. Through research, she found that hyperbaric oxygen treatment was used to treat this condition, the same method used in treating humans for decompression sickness commonly known as the bends. But doing anything groundbreaking comes with risk.
โWeโve never heard of this done with a gorilla, which makes the stakes of the procedure even higher,โ said Dr. Natalie. โAnd thatโs a little nerve wracking.โ
The idea is that the treatment will compress the air around Lilly and effectively squeeze the bubbles so small that they pass through the bloodstream.
After a stressful afternoon of nail-biting, the treatment was a success, and Dr. Natalie could do a little โdecompressingโ of her own. โIโve known Lilly since she was born and she is the same age as my daughter,โ said Dr. Natalie with some relief. โSuccess is hard to measure, but I believe we make a positive impact in the lives of all the animals in our care.โ
Assisting Dr. Natalie with Lilly was veterinarian Dr. Jen, another board-certified specialist in zoological medicine who sees herself as an advocate for animals on both the land and the sea. From the intricate planning it takes to anesthetize a giraffe โ the tallest animals in the world โ to removing a decaying tooth of a 1850โpound manatee โ Dr. Jen applies innovative techniques and tries to get to know the personality of each animal.
To say that eels have personality would be a stretch for most. But for Dr. Jen, she describes an anemic, three-foot long green moray eel named Sigsbee as sassy, inquisitive, charismatic and even handsome. So, when Sigsbee started keeping to himself, she and the animal care team at The Seas with Nemo & Friends knew something was wrong.
An endoscopy of his pale pink gills showed that his anemia had returned. But a more advanced diagnostic tool such as a CT scan would supply more insight into his organs. But how does one get a moray eel into a CT scanner?
The animal health team and aquarists got creative and designed a clear acrylic box suitable to suspend an eel hammock. Because they welcomed various outside-the-box thinking, they were able to see that the rest of his vital organs โ including his kidney – were in ship-shape condition.
For 22-year Cast Member Dr. Deidre, saving the lives of animals was a calling she developed long before her time at University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. But sheโs gone beyond saving the lives of individual animals. Part of her veterinary and conservation legacy is saving species: two entirely different bird species to be exact.
Working with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Dr. Deidre has helped recover the extinct Guam rail and Guam kingfisher birds. Both species are natives of Guam and became extinct due to an invasive predator named the brown tree snake. The unique Guam rail is known for its white longitudinal stripes on its head and houndstooth pattern on its body, while the kingfisher displays vivid blue wings contrasted against its portly brown and orange body.
With support from AZA, Dr. Deidre and a team mobilized the care and breeding of dozens of hatchlings over a number of years at a neighboring island. She recalls several occasions holding the birds with both hands to ready them for release. Before flying off into the wild, many birds would turn towards her for what appeared to be a single moment of gratitude as they disappeared into the brush.
โItโs as if they said, thank you for caring about me,โ said Dr. Deidre, โKnowing that these species were extinct in the wild and being able to bring them back to their natural habitat is one of my proudest moments. I truly feel like it leaves a legacy for the species.โ
โHelping critically endangered animals and making a difference in their care is our driving force,โ according to Dr. Betsy. After one of her patients, a silverback gorilla got sick, she had to perform a vital procedure to save his life. After the procedure, โhe came right up to me at the glass and put his hand on the window. I felt like he was genuinely thanking me because he understood I had helped him.โ
While all of these incredibly smart, strong and soft-hearted Cast Members have earned the right to be called veterinary superheroes, none of them will admit it as an individual achievement. Providing the highest level of care, for the highest quality of animal wellbeing is a team effort.

Family Guy Reunites With The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers
Fox’s animated shows will cross over this weekend when Family Guy visits Bob’s Burgers and sits next to Homer Simpson. The March 12th episode of Family Guy season 21 will have Peter rub elbows with his fellow Fox animated superstars. You can check out the scene from this clip on YouTube.
Family Guy and The Simpsons haven’t crossed over since 2014, so these events are rare in frequency. The clip shows Peter backing away from Lois as she tells a story. Peter backs away so far from her that he winds up in the animated time slot before his show. Bob then tells Peter to sit beside Homer, who sits silently while he eats a burger.
Family Guy showrunner Rich Appel told Entertainment Weekly, “We don’t have any more crossover appearances planned. However, he quipped that Fox execs “reserve the right to change our minds if a new Fox animated show premieres and is a huge hit and we feel that shoehorning one of its characters into our show could bring us even the slightest bit of reflected glory.”
Tune in on March 12 to Family Guy to see some of history’s most iconic animated characters share a funny scene. Would you like to see Fox create more crossover opportunities in the future? Let us know your thoughts in a comment.
Disney Shelving Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins Star Wars Movies
In a massive Star Wars shakeup, Variety revealed that we might need to wait longer to experience Star Wars on the big screen than expected. Patty Jenkins was supposed to be creating a one-off film for theaters. Her movie, Rogue Squadron, has now been pulled, and sources close to the production say it is no longer in development. You may recall that the film was supposed to release in December 2023, but after being shelved, Jenkins said she would continue to work on the script. Variety reached out to Lucasfilm to comment on this news, but they did not respond for comment.
Similarly, an unnamed Star Wars project from Marvel CEO Kevin Feige has also hit the cutting room floor. News of a Feige-led Star Wars project was announced in 2019, leading many to speculate that Feige would also take the helm of Lucasfilm from Kathleen Kennedy. Rumors of a Feige project have limped on, and no further discussion of the film has surfaced in the past three years. Variety has also learned that Feige’s film is no longer in production, and writers allocated to working on the project have turned their attention to other Marvel films.
In related news, it seems Rian Johnson will continue to develop content for Benoit Blanc and Netflix rather than continue with his time in a Galaxy Far Away. Johnson has stated publicly that he still wants to make Star Wars movies, and while Lucasfilm has stated they want him back, we have yet to see anything on the calendar from the director. His film The Last Jedi was polarizing with the Star Wars fan community, so many may not lament the lack of progress on a Johnson-led trilogy.
So it appears that at the moment, Taika Waititi, like Obi-Wan Kenobi, is our only hope for a film set in the Star Wars universe for the time being. Without a script, nobody can pinpoint when a project from Waititi would even release. Speculation could have a film as soon as 2025, but there is no evidence to support plans for a film in that spot. We will look to Star Wars Celebration for potential news of a forthcoming movie set in the Star Wars timeline.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Will Be Trilogy’s Longest Film
When the MCU closes out another trilogy this summer with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it will do so in grand fashion. James Gunn has promised that the third installment will be the final chapter in the team’s story. This time around, not all of the Guardians will make it out alive, and to properly tell their last story, Gunn’s film will clock in the longest run time in the trilogy.
GOTG Vol 3 follows suit with Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War which had greater run times than the preceding films. Gunn revealed via Instagram that Volume 3 would be the longest Guardians film. While a specific run-time was not revealed we know that we are getting at least 138 minutes since Volume 2 timed out at 137 minutes.
With a minimum of 138 minutes of run time, Guardians could be longer than any film we’ve seen in phases 4 and 5 of the MCU. Eternals,ย Spider-Man: No Way Home, andย Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are the only phase 4 films to clock in beyond 138 minutes.
Just getting a single minute of this film was a Herculean effort in and of itself. You will recall that Marvel briefly severed ties with James Gunn, pausing the project. The Guardians were initially slated to kick off Phase 4 but fell farther back due to COVID and Gunn’s involvement with The Suicide Squad. Gunn has since taken over the DCEU leading the creative development of films and shows.
You can join Starlord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, Nebula, Mantis, and Groot for one more ride when the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases in theaters on May 5, 2023. How long would you sit for a film featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy? Let us know your thoughts in a comment.
Marvel Confirms Next Appearance of Kang the Conqueror
Following his appearance in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Jonathan Majors will be popping up in all sorts of projects moving forward in the MCU. We first met a variant of Kang in Loki Season 1 as “He who remains.” Marvel has confirmed that Jonathan Major’s next appearance will be in Loki Season 2 this summer. That means that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will not have the time-traveling conqueror as it finishes its trilogy of films.
One of the bonuses when using a character like Kang is that “all possibilities are on the table.” Marvel VP of Production & Developmentย Stephen Broussard reiterated, “The future is unwritten, and this character could go anywhere. It could clearly be anything, in any guise. Part of the fun when it comes to Jonathan and Kang is to expect the unexpected. All possibilities are on the table.
In only his first two appearances, Majors has shown tremendous range in his portrayal of Kang the Conqueror, leading Broussard to say, “We just knew we had what I like to always call a Swiss Army knife in a performer, and you need an actor thatโs just a chameleon and capable of incredible range. Jonathan is a force of nature, and to watch him completely own this version of Kang was really awe-inspiring every day, day in and out.”
Next up for Majors is the role of Victor Timely in Loki Season 2. Timely was introduced in a post-credits scene following Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Timely is a secret variant of Kang that travels to the early 1900s. Without superpowers, Timely amasses tremendous wealth, power, and influence due to his knowledge of technology and the future. We will have to wait for the summer and Loki Season 2 to find out more details about the latest Kang variant.
