Simpsons Creators Discuss Second Simpsons Movie 2 and Delight Fans at D23 Expo 2022
Yeardley Smith took the the stage and hosted the Simpsons Panel at the D23 Expo in Anaheim California Friday Night. Smith provides the voice for Lisa Simpson for the long running television show. Smith toyed with the Disney crowd by donning a tiara, because that’s what Disney Princesses do. The Simpsons was acquired as part of the Fox merger with Disney back in 2019.
Smith the welcomed to the stage Simpsons creator Matt Groening, animator David Silverman, writer Rob Lazebnik, writer Tim Long, and producer Al Jean. The Simpson’s panel kicked off with an animated short, Welcome to the Club on Disney+. The short featuring Lisa Simpson and a variety of Disney Villains provided the usual irreverence we’ve all come to love about the show. Matt Groening dedicated the short to the late Pat Carroll, who voiced Ursula in Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Ursula made a cameo appearance in the short, but was obviously not voiced by the iconic Pat Carroll.
The comical short blended Disney animation with the iconic Simpsons style and humor. Pulling no punches, Yeardley smith quipped, “when you get aquired by Disney, we take no prisoners…” Groening and the team went on to announce the upcoming 34th Season of the Simpsons will return on September 25th. Additionally, season 33 of the Simpsons will be available to stream on Disney+ starting October 5th.
Groening and the team were sentimental as this is the first in person reunion since the pandemic. The creative team and cast have not seen each other in over three years and have been working remotely via web-conference.
Fans will be delighted to learn that there will be Two Halloween Tree House of Horror episodes in the upcoming season. When addressing the storytelling that continues after 33 seasons of television, the crew joked that Disco Stu will be getting a deep character arc in the new episodes. The panel spoke about developing secondary characters which is essential now that they have over 720 episodes created over the past three decades.
Animator David Silverman had fun with the crowd drawing spontaneous versions of Mr. Burns and Homer Simpson in a Mad Libs style game with audience members, but the crowd really wanted to know, will there be a second Simpson Movie?
The panel debunked any rumors of a potential Simpsons Movie 2, but didn’t rule out the possibility of another full feature length animated Simpsons project in the future. Groening is also busy with developing Futurama and Disenchantment (Netflix) which will be getting another season. Fans expected a major announcement on Simpsons Movie 2, since a big surprise was promised. The surprise was a panel appearance by an animated Homer Simpson. They have never animated a character for a convention before, so this was something new from the creative team of The Simpsons.
The team of animators and writers promised more epic cameos and voice talent for season 34, including Lizzo who is a huge fan of the show. It’s amazing how they continue to find new stories and jokes after three decades on television. Check out D23 Expo Site for more Disney+ related news and new releases.
