It’s only been two months since Disney+ aired the season one finale of Willow on the streaming service, but now that episode will serve as a series finale. After only one season, Lucasfilm and Disney have decided to pull the plug on the show. Many involved with the series were excited about the prospect of a second season. Season one’s ending shared that optimism as well by leaving a massive cliffhanger; but now that story will not be resolved.
News of the cancellation came via DEADLINE today. While critics panned the show, fans showed the epic show some love on Rotten Tomatoes to the tune of an 83% fresh score. The show served as a sequel to the 1988 film and remains a significant intellectual property for Lucasfilm.
The decision to cancel Willow comes amidst a series of changes at Lucasfilm. Star Wars projects by Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins were scrapped as Disney looks to reset its slate of offerings from Lucasfilm. Given the optimism shown by creatives Ron Howard and Jonathan Kasdan towards a second season, this cancellation does comes as somewhat of a surprise.
Kasdan did show some perspective saying, “It’s a strange and unpredictable time here in Hollywood. You see it all over the industry – there are shows that were well on their way to moving forward that haven’t, shows that never expected to be in a second season that are – so you never know where you’re going to be and you never know where the world is going to end up in a year or whatever.” Kasdan added, “But I will tell you that these things take so long to get going and then to make that the attitude and the support from Lucasfilm has been: ‘We definitely want to keep telling these stories, but we don’t know what the future holds.”

Director Chloé Zhao provides an update on Eternals 2
Eternals director Chloé Zhao sat down with the Hollywood Reporter to discuss Johnnie Walker’s Female Filmmaker Initiative and what’s next for her. Part of that conversation involved the director’s involvement in a sequel to Marvel’s The Eternals. When asked if she had any interest in helming a follow-up film to the Eternals, Zhao replied, “no comment.”
Offering no elaboration on her response, Zhao did lend insight into her decision to work with Marvel by saying, “you just have to stay true to the kind of film you want to make and who you are and the people you’re collaborating with.” Even if Zhao doesn’t return to the MCU, it sounds like she harbors no regrets about the film she made.
Fans of Chloé Zhao can hold out hope that her no comment suggests that she might be tight-lipped about any future project, keeping any film under wraps until Marvel Studios decides to announce. However, given the film’s lackluster reception from critics and fans, we are likelier to believe that Zhao is done with the Eternals.
While Marvel has yet to announce a direct sequel to Eternals, it is possible that characters introduced in the origin story could pop up in other Marvel projects. Harry Styles Eros was introduced in a post-credit sequence and will likely feature somewhere else, if not in a second Eternals film. As for the rest of the Eternals team, they could pop up in another feature film or even a Disney+ project somewhere down the road.

Wicked : Part One Movie is coming to theaters on Thanksgiving 2024
Universal Pictures announced yesterday that Wicked: Part One is coming to theaters on Thanksgiving of 2024. That date places the film’s release one month before the previously announced Christmas 2024. This film adaptation of the stage musical has been highly anticipated. Wicked transformed Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth into household names and helped spawn staged versions of the musical all over the globe.
Wicked centers around the relationship between Glinda (The Good Witch) and Elphaba (The Wicked Witch of the West). Wicked is based on a book by Gregory Maguire entitled Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Debuting in 2003, Wicked has become one of the most popular shows on Broadway. This film adaptation will encapsulate the staged version and add two new musical numbers explicitly created for the film.
Wicked: Part 1 features Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda. Jonathan Bailey will play Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum will feature as the Wizard of Oz, with Michelle Yeoh portraying Madame Morrible.
The decision to move Wicked: Part 1 up to Thanksgiving removed it from direct competition with blockbusters like Avatar 3 and family-friendly Sonic the Hedgehog 3 during Christmas. This is working on the assumption that Avatar 3 stays on schedule and releases for Christmas 2024 as promised.

Josh D’Amora demonstrated the lifelike Lightsaber that is currently in use on the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser
Fans in attendance at the South By South West (SXSW) conference in Austin, Texas were recently treated to a demonstration of Disney’s lifelike Lightsaber. Twitter user Vids That Go Hard posted the demo on Twitter:
The ‘real’ Lightsaber, which looks like an actual Lightsaber from the movies when activated, was noted to be a ‘hard project.’ D’Amora noted he was told to only activate the Lightsaber twice, potentially indicating the fragility of the new technology.
The Lightsaber, first introduced in promotional videos for Galactic Starcruiser in 2022, is currently used during a show involving Rey on Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser. During the show, Rey activates the Lightsaber and then swaps out for a different prop prior to ‘fighting’ with it.
So far no indication of when, or if, the new Lightsaber will make its way into the parks.
