Friends of Fisher House Orlando received a $10,000 donation from the Disney World Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic

In honor of Veterans Day, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort has made a significant contribution to support veterans and their families with a $10,000 donation to Friends of Fisher House Orlando. This charitable act reflects the proceeds raised during the event, showcasing the resort’s commitment to giving back to the community.

Friends of Fisher House Orlando was honored as the charitable beneficiary for the annual Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic. Located at the Orlando VA Medical Center, the Orlando Fisher House is a beacon of hope for military and veteran families. This crucial facility provides complimentary accommodations and essential resources across several Central Florida counties, supporting families while their loved ones receive medical treatment.

John Karkovice, a retired United States Marine Corps member and the Secretary of the Board of Directors for Friends of Fisher House Orlando, expressed deep gratitude for this partnership. “We’re honored to be the charitable partner of the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic,” said Karkovice. On these special nights, guests receive an additional three hours of enchantment at Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT. Walt Disney Company Donates $1 Million to Student Veterans of America

The Walt Disney Company recently revealed a generous $1 million contribution to Student Veterans of America (SVA), reinforcing its dedication to assisting veterans in discovering fulfilling career paths post-military service.

By making this donation, Disney proudly assumes the role of the inaugural sponsor for the forthcoming SVA Career Center. This center is poised to equip veterans with essential tools and guidance, facilitating a smooth transition into the civilian workforce. The initiative is anticipated to be a game-changer, unleashing the untapped potential of veterans in unprecedented ways.

“We’re proud to make this donation to the Student Veterans of America for their new virtual career center, which will help veterans making the transition from military life to college and career,” said Bob Iger, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company.

“Disney has a long history of supporting our nation’s service members and their families dating back to our company’s founding, including through our Heroes Work Here initiative, which has enabled us to hire more than 15,000 veterans across our company over the past decade. Serving as a platform for exchanging best practices in the recruitment of veterans and military spouses, the Veterans Institute also emphasizes promoting skills and opportunities for a seamless transition from military service to the civilian workforce.

Tony’s Town Square Restaurant Debuts New Menu Items

Tony’s Town Square Restaurant in Magic Kingdom has debuted some new menu items! While a lot of guest-favorite items are still on the menu, there are some tasty new ones as well.

Some of the new menu items include Insalata Caprese and Fried Mozzarella. The Insalata Caprese is Heirloom Tomatoes and Fresh Mozzarella topped with Arugula and White Balsamic Pesto while the Fried Mozzarella is footlong mozzarella sticks with spicy creamy tomato sauce.

Disney Cruise Line Celebrates Opening of New Port Everglades Terminal

The new Disney Cruise Line Port Everglades terminal is now open! Earlier today, Disney Cruise Line, along with port and community leaders, celebrated the opening of the new dedicated cruise terminal and Disney Cruise Line’s second year-round homeport in Florida.

“The grand opening of our new dedicated terminal is an incredible milestone as we embark on the largest expansion in our cruise line’s history,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Line. “Now our guests will have even more options to experience the magic of a Disney vacation at sea and can begin creating lifelong memories with their loved ones from the moment they arrive.”

Port Everglades’ ideal location in South Florida offers guests the opportunity to experience beautiful beaches, world-class entertainment, shopping, and dining, as well as family and cultural activities, before or after their cruise. It is also conveniently located near major airports and highways, allowing guests to easily travel to and from the port.

Once guests arrive to the terminal to embark on their voyage, they will “dive” into the world of Disney and Pixar’s film, “Finding Nemo,” with some of their favorite friends from the film displayed on colorful murals. The more than 104,000-square foot terminal was reimagined by Walt Disney Imagineering exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests to provide a seamless embarkation experience.

Broward County Mayor Lamar P. Fisher attended the grand opening celebration, along with federal, state, and local leaders, and said, “Dream vacations start here in Broward County. The addition of Disney Cruise Line in our community provides travelers with more vacation options at Port Everglades, while boosting our local economy and creating more than 1,100 direct local jobs.”

Disney Cruise Line is committed to creating a lasting, positive impact in port communities. In recognition of Disney’s arrival to Port Everglades, the cruise line announced new community investments in Junior Achievement South Florida and Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. The donations will support a variety of initiatives, including programs that inspire career exploration, innovation, and storytelling.

“Being a good steward in the port communities where Disney Cruise Line operates is so important to us. We’re proud to continue to invest in local youth programs that help empower and inspire the next generation of dreamers in Broward County,” Siskie said. Collaboration with these organizations will also provide Disney Cruise Line cast and crew, both on land and at sea, with the opportunity to volunteer as mentors and engage with local students through various educational programs.

The Disney Dream will begin sailing from Port Everglades on November 20, 2023, followed by the Disney Magic on May 9, 2024, offering guests the opportunity to sail on a mix of three-, four- and five-night cruises to tropical destinations in The Bahamas and the Caribbean.

As part of Disney Cruise Line’s expansion, Disney Cruise Line and Broward County previously announced a 15-year agreement that includes a minimum 10.6 million passenger movements, and three 5-year extension options that could add another 11.25 million passenger movements. The agreement provides for one ship to homeport in Port Everglades year-round beginning this fall 2023, joined by a second, seasonal ship in 2025.

The Marvels Posts Lowest Box Office Opening at $47 Million

Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe used to be the golden goose at the box office, but things have taken a turn. “The Marvels” had a rough start in its opening weekend, pulling in only $47 million – the worst debut in MCU history. The film had an estimated 300 million dollar budget.

Initial predictions were way higher, around $75-80 million, but those hopes dwindled to a more modest $60-65 million as the release approached. Despite the movie being the 33rd MCU film in 15 years, it couldn’t even hit these lowered expectations. The film faced challenges like bad buzz and key cast members, including Brie Larson, being MIA due to the SAG strike, which thankfully ended just in time for the release.

Out of the extensive MCU catalog, only two films, “The Incredible Hulk” in 2008 and “Ant-Man” in 2015, have had weaker openings, not adjusting for inflation. While the MCU has been showing some chinks in its superhero armor, with “The Marvels” being a clear example, the other big releases this year, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” in February ($106 million) and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” in May ($118 million), still pulled in impressive numbers, hitting the coveted triple digits. “The Marvels” is a bit of an oddball in the MCU world – usually, these movies don’t stumble right out of the gate, but this one did.

Paul Dergarabedian, media analyst at Comscore, analyzed that, “It may be not so much superhero fatigue, but more an issue of audiences who are looking for a more unique take on this tried-and-true genre.”

BoxOffice Pro chief analyst Shawn Robbins echoed his concerns for the Superhero Genre, saying, “the saturation of the MCU has “(diminished) the level of urgency audiences once felt for the franchise.” Long before the release of “The Marvels” fans around the world have continued to groan that there are too many Marvel projects.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has plotted a course-correct to Marvel’s release strategy favoring quality over quantity, something that was ignored during the Chapek era. While audience reviews of the film have been generally positive, many fans might be waiting for the inevitable release of the film on Disney+. Since the pandemic, viewer consumption of film has shifted with many opting to watch blockbuster films at home in their personal theaters.
