Meanwhile, the Festival of Fantasy Parade is scaling back its daily performances. Currently offered twice per day at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., the parade will move to a single 3 p.m. showing starting April 6. After a significant, months-long refurbishment, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom is on track to reopen in early May 2025. This is a major milestone for the attraction, which has been closed to guests since January of this year for its most extensive update in decades.

This week, work crews have been spotted hard at work on the final touches, both inside and outside the construction walls, hinting at the detailed transformation that awaits.

Queue Work in High Gear

Construction activity has been bustling around the Big Thunder complex. Crews were observed focusing on the lower levels of the outdoor queue. This area, comprised of the winding ramps that lead guests up toward the indoor loading station, is currently a hub of activity.

Work Zone: Workers are actively finishing the pathways and structural elements of these lower ramps.
Protecting the Detail: Several of the unique, rustic decorative props and set pieces that line the queue are currently draped in protective plastic tarps. This is a common practice during construction to shield themed elements from dust and damage as nearby work continues.

Sidewalk Improvement and Pavement Wars

One of the most noticeable—and impressive—changes isn’t the ride itself, but the ground beneath it. Pavement work is well underway outside the main attraction entrance, and the difference is striking.

Disney is replacing the older, flat, untextured concrete with highly detailed themed pavement. This new surface is a richer, rough-and-tumble textured brown pavement designed to resemble the rocky, dusty, uneven ground of an authentic Old West mining camp.

The Old Pavement: It was a darker, flatter, richer red color with no texture (a generic concrete finish).
The New Pavement: It features a deep brown, earthy tone and a rough, rock-like texture, perfectly matching the aesthetic of Tumbleweed.

This update significantly enhances the immersive atmosphere of Frontierland, making the transition from the pavement into the attraction seamless.

What to Expect Upon Reopening

This wasn’t just a basic repaint. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has undergone a complete overhaul. When it reopens in early May, here’s what guests can expect:

If you’ve taken a stroll through Storybook Circus at Magic Kingdom recently, you may have noticed the area looks a bit different. The colorful Big Top that usually houses Big Top Souvenirs and Pete’s Silly Sideshow is currently undergoing a massive structural refurbishment, leaving the iconic characters to find new temporary homes under the Florida sun.

A “Topless” Tent and New Walls

The refurbishment, which began earlier this year, has reached a significant milestone. Recent sightings show that the fabric roof and sides of the Big Top Souvenirs tent have been completely removed, leaving only the skeletal steel framework visible.

Construction walls now extend around the entire perimeter of the building, and themed scrims have been added to help mask the heavy maintenance work. The project is so extensive that even the Smellephants on Parade interactive scavenger hunt has been modified, as several of the “Smellephant” statues are currently inaccessible behind the construction barriers.

Meeting Minnie and Goofy

Despite the heavy construction, the “show must go on!” While their usual indoor meeting spot at Pete’s Silly Sideshow is behind walls, your favorite circus stars are still greeting guests nearby.

Minnie Magnifique & The Great Goofini: These two have been spotted meeting fans right near the entrance of the Big Top area, just outside the construction walls.
Donald & Daisy: If you’re looking for the Astounding Donaldo or Madame Daisy Fortuna, they have been relocated further back into Storybook Circus, typically near the Walt Disney World Railroad station or the nearby restrooms.

Planning Your Visit

Since these meet-and-greets have moved outdoors, there are a few things to keep in mind for your next trip:

Check the App: While wait times for Pete’s Silly Sideshow are currently listed as “temporarily unavailable” in the My Disney Experience app, you can still find the individual character appearance times listed.
Weather Permitting: Because these locations are now outdoors, the characters may need to take more frequent breaks or head inside during inclement weather.

The Sith Lord has relocated from his previous spot in the Star Tours outdoor queue to the Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple stage. You can find his new base of operations in the Echo Lake area, right near the entrance to Star Tours – The Adventures Continue.

The Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple stage is no longer vacant! Though the interactive show remains on hiatus following the park’s 2020 closure, it now serves as the official base for Lord Vader. If you’re looking to cross lightsabers (or just snap a photo), check your My Disney Experience app for daily sets. Today’s encounters were held between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

This latest move marks Vader’s second relocation in just a few months. After nearly a decade at Star Wars Launch Bay (2015–2025), the Sith Lord was forced to find a new base when that area closed permanently in September 2025. He initially transitioned to the Star Tours outdoor queue, but has now moved once again to take over the nearby Jedi Training stage.
