Captain EO 3-D Spectacular Returns to Epcot July 2

Captain EO 3-D Spectacular Returns to Epcot July 2

Just in time to add more joyous, uproarious fun to the Fourth of July weekend, “Captain EO” begins a reprise at Walt Disney World Resort July 2. The classic musical spectacular that thrilled Epcot guests from 1986-1994 will provide new Epcot audiences the opportunity to experience the original 3-D production for the very first time – and give longtime fans a nostalgic look back to see Michael Jackson in a rare performance created for the big screen.

Twenty-four years ago, Jackson joined forces with Disney, producer George Lucas and director Francis Ford Coppola to create a groundbreaking 17-minute 3-D film experience starring Jackson as Captain EO performing two original songs, and featuring Academy Award®-winning actress Anjelica Huston, and a cast of merry, mythical space characters with dual personalities who undergo magical transformations to become Jackson’s electronic band in conquering the forces of darkness.

For all its technology, “Captain EO” is first and foremost a musical spectacular and a thrilling space-fantasy adventure. The realism of the 3-D process will once again make it seem that Jackson dances right out of the screen into the theater. While it’s not possible to replicate some of the special effects elements originally in the theater, it will boast a new 70mm print of the film and sound better than ever thanks to acoustical enhancements made to the theater since the film last played there. The total effect is one of motion, color and high energy filled with Jackson’s musical brilliance and various illusions to create an exciting and realistic journey in space for the audience.

“Captain EO” will be presented multiple times daily at the Imagination pavilion at Epcot. It replaces “Honey, I Shrunk the Audience,” which is planned to return at an undetermined date.

Fans of Jackson family entertainment are in for a double treat heading into July 4 weekend. Not only will “Captain EO” be returning, but America Gardens Theatre will be alive with Karin Lawson – A Tribute to Janet Jackson, an act that celebrates the music of Michael Jackson’s sister Janet, June 27-July 3. Show times each day are 5:45, 7 and 8:15 p.m. Performances are included with Epcot admission.

Deserving Dads Gift Ideas

Deserving Dads Gift Ideas

These gift ideas come to us from the Disney Park Blog:

Sometimes, Dad can be pretty tough guy to shop for. With Father’s Day right around the corner, you may be racking your brain trying to find that perfect gift that’s just right for dear ol’ Dad. If another power tool just won’t do – allow me to recommend a few of my top picks that’ll remind him just how loved he is whether he’s at work or at play.

Is your Dad sporty? Help him tee off in Disney style with Disney Golf Club Covers, Golf Ball Markers, Golf towels, Golf balls and a Golf Cap. Dad will like nothing more than a gift that encourages him to keep hitting the greens. The best part about the Disney Golf Collection is that not only can it be found in select Disney Theme Park Merchandise locations, but it can also be found online too! To find the right golf accessory that’s sure to be a hole in one with Dad, visit DisneyParks.com/Store.

Now, my Dad makes the bold claim that he’s the “Undisputed Grill Master of The World.” Since he already is fully equipped with a grill and all the grilling accessories, one thing I know he can never get enough of are grill seasonings & rubs. So when I saw Chef Mickey’s BBQ Magic Seasoning Kit, I knew I had a gift that would encourage him to fire up the grill. The kit comes with a bottle of Sweet-As-Minnie BBQ Sauce plus two Oh Boy, That’s Good! Dry Spice Rubs for both chicken & beef. Keep an eye out for this set at the Emporium on Main Street U.S.A. and other select merchandise locations at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts.

Disney To Release "Bambi" On Blu-Ray

Disney has revealed the next animated classic to receive the high-definition treatment as part of their Diamond Collection. “Bambi” will hit Blu-ray in 2011.

“Bambi,” last remastered and released in 2005, will hit the format for the first time in the Spring of 2011. It follows the already released title in the Diamond Collection “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” “Sleeping Beauty” and “Pinocchio,” already released on Blu-ray, are expected to be part of the Diamond collection in the future.

Up next to release as a Diamond Edition is “Beauty and the Beast,” which will arrive on October 5th on Blu-ray and Blu-ray/DVD combo packs. The set will feature never-before-seen deleted footage including an alternate opening, the regular and extended versions of the film, a Jordin Sparks music video, interactive features, and more.

Although it has yet to be formally announced, “Fantasia” and “Fantasia 2000” are expected to be released together on Blu-ray in December.

“The Lion King” will reportedly follow the release of “Bambi” in the Fall of 2011. Other Disney classics to follow as part of the Diamond Collection include “The Little Mermaid,” “Cinderella,” “Peter Pan,” “Lady and the Tramp,” “101 Dalmatians,” and “The Jungle Book.”

Disney/Pixar Buys The First Twitter Trending Topic Ad for Toy Story 3

Disney/Pixar Buys The First Twitter Trending Topic Ad for Toy Story 3

This article comes to us from Tech Crunch where they breakdown the new Promoted Tweets on Twitter:

Since April, Twitter users have grown accustomed to Twitter’s first ad revenue play: Promoted Tweets. Today, the second phase of that strategy is starting to be tested: Promoted Trending Topics. The first such topic? Toy Story 3, promoted by Disney/Pixar.

As you can see in the right hand toolbar of Twitter.com, at the bottom of the Trending Topics area there is now an 11th topic, “Toy Story 3.” Next to it is a big yellow box letting you know that it’s a promoted Trending Topic. Just as with Promoted Tweets, the functionality for these Promoted Trending Topics is the same as the regular Trending Topics — clicking on it takes you to a search results page to see what people are saying about Toy Story 3.

As we have always said, we plan to test different advertising and promotional models in these early stages of our monetization efforts for both user and brand value. As part of this effort, we are testing trends clearly marked as “promoted” for an undefined period of time,” a Twitter representative tells us.

And along with buying the Trending Topic, Disney/Pixar gets a Promoted Tweet at the top of the stream, Twitter confirms. Twitter also says that just as with Promoted Tweets, the Promoted Trending Topic “has to resonate” or it will disappear.

New Toy Story 3 Characters are now featured in Toy Story Mania

New Toy Story 3 Characters are now featured in Toy Story Mania

New characters from the Disney•Pixar film “Toy Story 3” have been added to the joyful, toy-full adventure of Toy Story Mania! at Disney California Adventure and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. In addition to playing with new characters in Toy Story Mania!, there are opportunities in both parks for up-close fun with another all-new character from “Toy Story 3” – Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear. He’s the bossman at Sunnyside Daycare in the animated feature film.

Toy Story Mania! – the 4-D interactive ride-game attraction inspired by the Disney•Pixar “Toy Story” films – is extremely popular with Disney Parks guests on both coasts. This high-energy, immersive adventure puts players squarely in the action as their game play triggers surprises that deliver a fourth dimension of fun. Toy Story Mania! engages guests in a whole new way with delightful characters of “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2.”

Woody, Buzz, Mr. Potato Head and the gang are joined by a whole new set of characters from “Toy Story 3.” The new game greeting guests, “Rex and Trixie’s Dino Darts,” invites riders to shoot their virtual darts at all-new balloon targets in a primeval world filled with volcanoes and lava balloons, explained Sue Bryan, senior show producer, director, Walt Disney Imagineering.

Game players are welcomed by Rex (the nervous Tyrannosaurus rex) and his new friend Trixie (a blue Triceratops and one of the toy characters from the new film) cheering them on. The new game (it replaces “Bo Peep’s Baaa-loon Pop”) turns up the fun with more hidden surprises and the potential for volcanic levels of excitement. Other changes:

  • The “Hamm & Eggs” game is now hosted by Hamm and Buttercup (a toy unicorn with heart-shaped nostrils).
  • In the prize scene, Trixie, Buttercup, Dolly (a doll), Mr. Pricklepants (a lederhosen-clad hedgehog) and one other surprise – all from “Toy Story 3” – appear with Woody and Jessie.

“Our number-one goal in creating Toy Story Mania! was to come up with game-play challenges appropriate for all guests, from little kids to serious gamers,” Bryan said. “I love that we are keeping things fresh and new by adding these great new friends and fun to join some of the most popular characters of all time.”

Top 10 Quick Bites in the Walt Disney World Theme Parks

Top 10 Quick Bites in the Walt Disney World Theme Parks

Great little top 10 list from Pam Brandon, Disney Parks Food Writer at Disney Park Blog:

We recently posted Top 10 favorite Walt Disney World restaurants and a reader asked for favorite quick-service restaurants. With four theme parks it’s not easy but we’re still sticking to Top 10. Forget hot dogs and hamburgers, here goes:

  1. Sweet Potato Cart, Frontierland, Magic Kingdom. Vegans, vegetarians and carnivores love this filling snack that’s low fat and full of vitamins – and you can eat on the run. Sweet potatoes are seasonal, so if we don’t find them, we head to Columbia Harbour House for the Lighthouse Sandwich – hummus, broccoli slaw and tomatoes on whole-grain bread. Or we throw caution to the wind and order the restaurant’s fried shrimp platter.
  2. Ditto for the veggie egg roll from the Egg Roll Wagon in Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom. Low fat, not so much. But satisfying and easy to eat when you’re dashing through the park.
  3. Taco Salad, Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe, Frontierland, Magic Kingdom. Better than a burger and you can load up with jalapeños at the toppings bar.
  4. Half slab of St. Louis Ribs, Flame Tree Barbecue, Disney’s Animal Kingdom. We’ve peeked in the kitchen to watch the chefs grill these tasty favorites – finger-lickin’ good.
  5. Kung Pao Beef, Yak & Yeti counter service, Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Grab some chopsticks and dig in.
  6. Pressed Tuscan deli sandwich with shaved smoked ham, smoked breast of turkey, provolone, Caesar dressing and Pesto marinated tomatoes on a Tuscan roll, served with apple slices or French fries at Studio Catering Company, Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Go for the fries.
  7. Southwest salad with chicken, tortillas, black bean relish, avocado, and cilantro vinaigrette at Backlot Express, Disney’s Hollywood Studios. And since it’s relatively healthful, sometimes we sneak in a late-afternoon peanut butter and jelly shake at the bar at 50’s Prime Time Cafe.
  8. Roasted Beets and Goat Cheese Salad with honey sherry dressing at Sunshine Seasons, The Land pavilion, Epcot. Plain delicious if you love beets. If not, go for the seared tuna salad with sesame-rice wine dressing.
  9. Does a chocolate crepe count as a meal? We think so. Stop at the Crepes des Chefs de France kiosk in Epcot World Showcase.
  10. Sit at the outdoor tables and people watch while you share a shawarma platter at Tangierine Cafe at the Morocco pavilion in Epcot World Showcase. Generous tastes of hummus, tabouleh, couscous salad and Moroccan bread. We suggest the chicken and lamb combo.

Top Eats: Best Quick Service Dining in Epcot.

Top Eats: Best Quick Service Dining in Epcot.

Last week, I struggled a bit coming up with quick service spots in Hollywood Studios that I thought were good enough to recommend to others.   We figure if you’re kind enough to read our site, we owe it to you to be honest and accurate. The last thing any of us wants is for someone to be sitting in the World thinking “Wow, they were really wrong about this place” so we take this pretty seriously.  Well, I’m happy to tell you that I didn’t struggle to find places to recommend in Epcot.  In fact, the real problem was narrowing it down. Here’s my top five.

5.  Sommerfest has a really limited menu, so if you have vegetarians in your group, you might want to send them ahead to the next pavilion so you can enjoy your sausage without them giving you accusing, hungry glances. Sommerfest is modeled after the German schnellimbuss, which are the small, fast food stands you’ll find throughout Germany.  You’ll find pretzels, wurst (served with sauerkraut and a roll), German beer, and pastries, often Black Forest Cake and a delicious Apple strudel.   The desserts are above average, so it’s one of those places where the  included dessert which comes with your quick service meal on the dining plan is a particularly good bargain.  The wurst is very flavorful, although I’d love it if they served it with some mustard that had more of a “bite” to it.  The rolls served with the wurst are its weakest link, as is often the case with Disney World restaurants.  Sommerfest lacks adequate seating, but if you can get one of the few nearby tables, you’ll enjoy one of the most shaded spots in Epcot.  Good people watching too.

4.  Located in the Norway paviolion in Epcot, Kringla Bakeri og Cafe has two things that always stand out in my mind:  One, the really extraordinary rice cream, which is  their super-creamy but not too sweet (so it counts as lunch) version of rice pudding; and two, the friendliest cast members in the World Showcase, which is saying a lot because it’s Disney and everyone is friendly.  I’m not sure what they’re putting in these kids’ school bread, but whatever it is, I’d like some for the cashiers at my local Whole Foods, please. Besides cheerful cast members and rice pudding, you can find a wide variety of pastries, sandwiches, small salads, a soup of the day, and a vegetable tort.   All of it’s fresh and all of it’s very good.  There’s a small, shaded seating area as well.

3.  Vegetarians can eat really well at Epcot quick service restaurants and one of the best spots is the Tangerine Cafe, located in the Moroccan Pavilion, where they’ll find a tasty vegetable platter with traditional accompaniments.  Shawarma platters with couscous, hummus and bread, wraps, and Mediterranean Sliders are exotic enough for the setting but not so spicy as to be unappealing to more timid palates.   There’s also a kids’ menu with chicken fingers and burgers.  As a bonus, this place is just exotic enough that it scares off some guests, so you’re unlikely to encounter massive crowds. Reward yourself for being in the know with some delicious baklava.

2.  Boulangerie Patsisserie, located in the French pavilion at Epcot, is one of those places that everyone seems to love.  Not surprisingly then, it can get pretty crowded, but I’ve found the line moves quickly.  Sandwiches, pastries, salads and quiche are on the menu.  The only downside is that there are very few places to sit save for the sides of the long fountain just outside and competition for those spots can get downright ugly. Consider bringing your food over to one of the benches that line the World Showcase Lagoon and have a relaxing little picnic.

1.  I picked Sunshine Seasons as number one because it has some of the best and freshest quick service food anywhere in Walt Disney World, not just in Epcot.  While I think there are better individual dishes in the World Showcase, or at least ones that I prefer,  the wide selection at Sunshine Season means there’s something for everyone in your group:  Asian-style noodle bowls, soups, sandwiches, salads, grilled salmon, and rotisserie chicken, in addition to kid favorites like macaroni and cheese.  The quality is generally high, so you won’t leave feeling unsatisfied or worse, ripped off.  Located in the Land pavilion right next to the entrance of Soarin’, Sunshine Seasons stays busy and there’s little in the way of the type of theming you’ll find at restaurants in the World Showcase.  It’s a place to fuel up for a decent price and continue touring.  If you missed breakfast at your resort, it’s one of the few places in Epcot where you’ll find quick service breakfast items.

Dishonorable mention:  These posts are designed to showcase what we think are some of the best choices at a given park or resort, but I feel I would be remiss in not mentioning one that I think you should avoid, mainly because there are too many excellent meals available elsewhere and I don’t like to see anyone waste their money or have a disappointing meal.  The worst offender in an otherwise exemplary group of restaurants is Lotus Blossom Cafe, located in the China pavilion, arguably the loveliest and most detailed of all the  World Showcase pavilions.  I’m not sure, but somehow they’ve managed to make Chinese food that’s even worse than you’ll find back home in your mall’s food court, and that is something of an accomplishment.  It’s too bad because the cast members are great and I could spend hours exploring the China pavilion, which undoubtedly has me hankering for a snack.

So what are your favorites?  We’d love to hear your take on Epcot quick service restaurants in the comments.
