Preview of Radiator Springs Racers ride coming in 2012 to Disney California Adventure

Great news from the LA Times!

What’s better than an E Ticket ride? How about an F Ticket?

Radiator Springs Racers promises to redefine our expectations of an E Ticket attraction by combining a classic dark ride with a thrilling head-to-head drag race.

Currently under construction at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim, the $200-million ride, scheduled to make its debut in 2012,  will take passengers on a four-minute journey through stalactite caverns, around hairpin turns and along high-speed straightaways. Each side-by-side race ends with a randomly selected winner.

Why isn’t there an Annual Pass Payment Plan for Non-Florida Residents?

Why isn't there an Annual Pass Payment Plan for Non-Florida Residents?

This summer, Disney unveiled an annual pass payment plan for Florida residents which allows guests to split up payments over the course of a year.  It basically works like this:  Show proof that you’re a Florida resident by producing either a valid driver’s license or state-issued ID card, then pay for one day’s admission plus one monthly payment in advance. For example, say you’re buying a Premium Pass, which costs $520.81 for Florida residents.  You’ll pay $84.14 plus $36.39 that day and then $36.39 for the next eleven months.  There’s no extra charge for getting the plan and there’s no interest, so it’s a great way to pay for your annual passes, particularly for families who potentially shell out a few thousand a year for APs.

Early reports are that the plan was a success, as many more Floridians than expected took advantage of it. This is great for Disney and for Floridians, but what about non-residents?   When Disney announced this plan on Facebook and on the Official Parks Blog, it became apparent from the comments that most readers were very disappointed that this option didn’t extend to non-Floridians.  In fact, on Disney’s Facebook page, there were nearly 1000 comments on this subject, nearly all asking why non-Floridians don’t also qualify for a payment plan (Plus two guys arguing about Star Wars. Why?).  Some of them took it downright personally.

The only reason I’ve heard for not extending this benefit to non-residents, and this doesn’t come from Disney itself but rather from posters on a Disney message board, is that it poses some difficulties in the event that someone fails to pay.  I find this difficult to believe.  If that were the case, any one of us non-residents could go to Florida, have a ball and run up some bills, default, and be untouchable by creditors. We all know that it doesn’t work that way.

In many ways, extending the payment plan to non-residents is better for Disney.  Annual passes work best for Disney when they aren’t used that much. It’s kind of like gym memberships; if every member went regularly, the place would go out of business. Now granted, Disney potentially earns revenue every time someone comes into the parks, so having guests come multiple times a year is good for Disney, to an extent. But having lived in Florida, in my experience many Floridians regard Disney as a day trip, particularly if they live within driving distance, so they’re less likely to stay in Disney resorts or eat at Disney restaurants or even buy souvenirs . Frankly, if you buy an annual pass and you’re used to seeing Disney this way, maybe you’re not spending much money at all, but you’re still parking on Disney property (for free) and using that pass.  Then that pass makes a lot less sense for Disney.

Conversely, non-residents are almost guaranteed to spend money. In fact, it’s pretty much unavoidable.  We’re certainly not doing Disney as a day trip.  We’re buying souvenirs, trying the restaurants, and staying in the resorts. Plus, give a Dinsey fan an annual pass and what you typically hear is that it will burn a hole in his pocket–he’ll go more because the ticket, one of the biggest expenses of a Disney trip, is already paid for.  But unlike nearby guests, we’re not going so much that we start to put a dent in Disney’s profit. Plus, it’s a given that a small percentage of those out of state guests who  buy annual passes might even fail to get their money’s worth out of it. Things come up, flights get too expensive, trips get cancelled, passes expire.

I suppose it’s possible that Disney feels that by extending this benefit, the company could possibly be giving the wrong signal to shareholders who might view it as a public admission that the economy has hurt Disney World as much as any other travel destination.  Many parks have a similar payment option, but Disney has never been “most parks.”  By not extending this benefit, Disney parks retain the image, at least, that the economy hasn’t touched them.  And maybe they don’t need the money.  Disney World attendance was steady in 2009, a year when Universal attendance was dismal.  Despite reports that attendance was down slightly in the last quarter as compared to last year, spending per room is up.  Still, I’m inclined to think that the fact that Disney continues to give substantial resort discounts indicates that even the Mouse has felt the pinch in the last few years.

I always say that Disney is one of the smartest companies out there and I think this is a brilliant plan.  And while I’m sure they have their reasons for not extending this benefit to non-residents, I can’t imagine what the reasoning is.  What I suspect and hope is that the Florida payment plan is actually being used by Disney as a test to see how it might work for the rest of the country.

Hey, I can dream, right?

Walt Disney World Quick Tip – Watching Wishes At The Magic Kingdom

A lot of my tips come from careful study and planning but this one was a total accident. A lot of visitors love to watch Wishes (Hallowishes etc.) from Main Street USA for many reasons. Some think they will get out of the park faster, but unless they watch from the far end near the train station they will not. Others like the crowds (not me) and still others just have to see the fireworks framing Cinderella Castle. I can appreciate the last one but I’m not quite that fussy as long as I see the fireworks.

On one particular evening we were searching for a spot on the Tomorrowland Bridge but found it just as crowded as the Hub. Apparently not everyone has to see the Castle framed by the fireworks. We headed towards the Hub to see if we could get to the other side and just at the end of the bridge there was a small path off to the left that looked like it could be a shortcut. We took the path and about 1/3 of the way down we happened to look toward the Castle and the view was perfect. We decided to try viewing the fireworks from that spot and were surprised to find that we could see all of the fireworks and even more surprising there were only five or six other people standing there. That spot is where we will stand from now on!!

If you are coming down Main Street USA, the path is off to your right just after you cross the water coming into the Hub area. Hush – don’t tell anyone and enjoy the fireworks!!

D23′s Star Tours Final Flight Event at Walt Disney World Resort

D23′s Star Tours Final Flight Event at Walt Disney World Resort

Get ready to visit a galaxy far, far away one last time! After Disney’s Hollywood Studios has closed to the general public, D23 Members are invited to take an exhilarating “final flight” to the Moon of Endor before Star Tours suspends departures as it readies for its 2011 reimagining.

Guests will check in at the main entrance to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and receive their commemorative boarding pass for their trip. Once we are cleared (for launch!) guests will be escorted directly into Star Tours. Bid C-3PO and R2-D2 a fond farewell as you walk past them in the pre-board area. After watching the classic 1987 safety video (love her hair — and those eyebrows!) you will enter one of the six Starspeeder 3000 vehicles where Captain Rex will welcome you one last time for your trip. We’d hope after all these flights, things will go smoothly but… we have a very bad feeling about this!

After you have landed safely, guests will be escorted back out of the park, energized to relaunch in 2011 with Star Tours: The Adventures Continue!

Face-Painting Tips from The Pirates League at Walt Disney World

In need of a Halloween costume idea? Our friends at The Pirates League can help — they’re offering an easy way to become a pirate. The process starts with makeup to create a black eye. Highlights around black makeup near the eye make it appear as though it’s puffy and an ordinary red eyeliner pencil make the eye look “sore.”

Next, creating a scar to go with the black eye is done with a sponge and a pencil. To draw the scar, start at the corner of the eye and move down in a wave. And to make the scar look more realistic, add white to the top of the scar line and add black to the bottom. Then, a few lines across the scar make it appear as if there are stitches. And finally, a few dabs of black makeup around the chin and cheeks create a pirate’s beard. Check out the video to see it all come together.

By the way, The Pirates League is accepting reservations when you call (407) 939-2739. Theme park admission is required. Also, we have more information at disneyworld.com.

Disney World Quick Tips – Finding More Magic.

Disney World Quick Tips – Finding More Magic.

There’s more to Disney World than just parks, fun resorts, and good food. There’s a lot of magic that the average visitor doesn’t see.  Here’s just a few fun ways to find more magic in less obvious places:

  • Keep your trip a secret and surprise the kids.  Make sure you have kids who are open to surprises. For some kids, surprises equal meltdowns.
  • If you’re driving, “premiere” the latest Disney DVD release on your way down. Showing the kids a new Disney movie is a great way to temporarily silence the “Are we there yets?”
  • See the Christmas lights that guests put up at the Ft. Wilderness campground. Tents, RVs, and cabins all get the holiday treatment by guests, some of whom stay the entire season. It’s one of the most festive, happiest displays anywhere.
  • Take a behind the scenes or segway tour.  If you’ve got an annual pass, you may be entitled to a discount.’
  • Learn the story behind an attraction and then ride it.  Whether it’s the art of Mary Blair or some obscure fact about the Haunted Mansion, it’s sure to add something  to your experience.
  • Celebrate a special occasion by parasailing over Bay Lake.  You can sign up at the Contemporary Resort.
  • Resort hop.   Have lunch, look for hidden Mickey’s or just find a quiet corner and cuddle up with a book.
  • Check out Celebration, the town that Disney built.   It’s a fun place to shop and eat lunch.
  • Try one of the best character meals on property at 1900 Park Fare. Cinderella is the guest of honor, but it’s her horrible, hilarious step-sisters who steal the show. Watch out–they’re terrible flirts!
  • Watch the fireworks from the beach at the Polynesian.
  • Enjoy the queue of a ride you don’t plan on riding.  The Tower of Terror has one of the best queues around.
  • Stop and watch a wedding at Sea Breeze Point.
  • Enjoy a leisurely stroll from the Polynesian to the  Grand Floridian.
  • Grown-ups can take advantage of Disney transportation and spend an evening drinking around the world.  Remember, you don’t have to drink at every country!
  • Be more fabulous in the parks.  It might sound a bit high-maintenance, but is the Florida humidity making your hair a little crazy?  Some deluxe resorts have salons that offer blow-out services for reasonable prices.
  • Spend a morning volunteering with Give Kids the World, an organization that provides free Disney vacations to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.
  • Run a marathon. There are races for ever level.
  • Go to a Disney fan meet-up.  Chances are your favorite blog, Disney forum,  or podcast has one.  It’s a great opportunity to meet other fans and talk Disney.  They can be as simple as meeting for a Dole Whip to a whole week of events.

The Best Things I Love About Disney Is… The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

The Best Things I Love About Disney Is… The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

There are three things that are important to me on a Disney attraction, 1-Theme, 2-Back Story, and 3-the WOW! factor of the Ride itself. Most of the ride attractions at Walt Disney World have at least one or two of these and many have all three but one embodies all of them better than any of the others – The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

From the time you enter Disney’s Hollywood Studios the sheer size and scope of the attraction grab you and draw you in. As you walk down Sunset Boulevard it just becomes more and more imposing. It just gets better as you enter the grounds of the attraction with the landscaping, nooks, little statues and the weathered look of everything there. The lobby is spectacular in its shabbiness and dustiness, and the little details (many from old Twilight Zone episodes) are extraordinary. You get a little uneasy as you enter the basement area, particularly when you see the rickety old generator shooting sparks and realize that’s what powers your elevator (not really). Then there’s Rod Serling’s briefing (where you learn the back story) and your “friendly” elevator operator. Fun fact – if your operator has Gold Epaulets on his/her, costume he/she is an original cast member there since the attraction’s opening day.

The ride itself is a real WOW! and I won’t ruin here for you. I’ll just say it’s fun, surprising, and just a little bit intense. Have a great ride.
