When Is The Right Age for a Child's First Trip to Disney World?

One hot topic I see on Disney message boards is the issue of when you should take a child to Disney World for the first time.  Conventional wisdom among travel guide writers is that the best age for a first-time visit is around seven or eight years-old, putting a child a few years past naps and little kid crankiness, but old enough to ride most everything in the Magic Kingdom and elsewhere and still young enough to believe in all the wonderful things that surround him. I think this is good solid advice, but many of us don’t want to wait that long because we love going ourselves, or we have younger children who are going on the trip as well.  Here’s a few questions to determine your child’s readiness for a trip to the World and tips to get a child of almost any age prepared for his big adventure.

  • How does your child handle a lot of physical activity?  Disney World is huge.  I’ve seen rambunctious teenagers limping back to their room after a day in the parks, so for little kids, it’s an even bigger challenge.  Most kids are active, but will benefit from a little bit of training beforehand.  A few months before your trip go for a family walk every night.  Not only will it get all of you in better shape for your vacation, it will provide family bonding time.
  • Potty training?  Okay, I know this sounds lazy, but if you have a partially potty trained toddler right before your trip who’s still having accidents and resisting using the toilet, consider stopping the potty training (unless the child objects) during your trip so you don’t have a lot of accidents.
  • Since this is all new, your child will likely resist certain rides, some of which won’t appear frightening to you.   Never force a kid to ride an attraction that he’s afraid of.  It’s rare that a parent puts a scared child on a ride and ends up with that kid saying he wants to do it again and again. More likely, you’ll end up putting him off of the rides he does want to visit.  If you’re worried about how your child will react to certain rides, watch clips on YouTube. There are videos of almost every Disney World attraction you can imagine. They really do help.
  • Is your child ready to sleep in a different environment?  The first night of your trip is not the time to find out.
  • I think this is a big one that is sometimes overlooked:  How does your child react to crowds and noise?  Disney World is a very stimulating environment.  Some kids, particularly those with sensory issues, find it overwhelming. If your child has difficulty with this type of environment, go during the slower times of year and consider avoiding parades, some character dining experiences, which can be loud, and fireworks.  You may want to limit your park exposure the first few days or visit a quieter park, like Animal Kingdom.  Gradually let your child become accustomed to his surroundings. By the end of your trip, he may feel perfectly comfortable.  Keep in mind that Disney offers Guest Assistance Cards for children with diagnosed disabilities who have difficulty waiting in line; Disney will not ask you what your child’s needs are, but you will need to go to Guest Services with your child when you enter the park to pick up the pass.
  • Is your child old enough to wait in long lines?  Even adults have difficulty; consider these tips to make waiting easier.
  • How will you tell your kids?  There are two schools of thought.  Some parents surprise their children the day before the trip. This is great because it avoids the constant question of “how many days until Disney?”, but some kids don’t like to be surprised and frankly, even those who don’t mind will be difficult to put to bed once they’ve found out they’re going to Disney World in the morning.  If your kid doesn’t like surprises or you can’t wait to tell them yourself, there are lots of fun ways to let them know, such as on their birthday or Christmas. Consider making a countdown chain or having a family Disney night where you plan together and maybe watch a favorite Disney movie.  Older kids can help make a scrapbook for the trip.  The possibilities for counting down your trip and savoring the excitement are endless.

Whatever you do, keep it all in perspective. There are going to be crazy moments:  Expect them and laugh at them.  I can almost promise that the good will far outweigh the crazy.  A trip to Disney World seen through the eyes of your child is a very special experience. Enjoy!

Disney XD "I'm in the Band" Srikes a Chord with Second Season

A second season of “I’m In The Band,” a music-filled, live-action comedy series about a teenager who realizes his wildest dream when he joins his favorite “vintage” rock band, has been ordered by Disney XD, it was announced today by Gary Marsh, president, Entertainment, and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide. Production will resume in June in Hollywood, California.

The new season finds the band inching their way closer to an epic comeback and includes a one-hour special where Tripp joins arch-rival rock band Metal Wolf. Iron Weasel attempts to lure him back during Metal Wolf’s performance at the Super Bowl, and by happenstance, ends up stealing the spotlight.

“I’m In The Band’s” February 2010 premiere is Disney XD’s No. 1 series premiere on record in Total Viewers and Tweens 9-14, and the net’s No. 1 live-action series premiere ever across core kid and boy demos: Kids 6-14, Boys 6-14, Kids 6-11, Boys 6-11 and Tween Boys. The multi-camera comedy is from creators Michael B. Kaplan (“Frasier,” “Girlfriends”) and Ron Rappaport (“Date My Mom”) and is executive-produced by Kaplan and Richard Gurman (“Married…with Children,” “Still Standing”).

The series stars Logan Miller as Tripp Campbell, Steve Valentine as Derek Jupiter, Greg Baker as Burger Pitt, Stephen Full as Ash and Caitlyn Taylor Love as Isabella “Izzy” Fuentes.

“I’m In The Band” follows Tripp Campbell as he joins his favorite “vintage” rock band, Iron Weasel, and becomes determined to help the band he idolizes make an epic comeback. He’s certainly got his work cut out for him with the trio of rock star misfits whose stars have fallen so far that they can’t even afford their own housing and are forced to share bunk beds in a guest room at Tripp’s house. Nonetheless, in their own off the wall way, the three stooges will do their best to help Tripp steer through his teenage years with the goal of turning him into a bona fide rock star and giving him the chance to live out his dream.

The series is produced by It’s A Laugh Productions and carries a TV-Y7 parental guideline.

Main Street Electrical Parade at Walt Disney World Draws Closer
Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” will light up the streets of Magic Kingdom, headlining a season of after-dark excitement coming to Walt Disney World Resort in summer 2010.
Beginning June 6 and continuing through Aug. 14, “Summer Nightastic!” will light up the night with shimmering, shining Disney magic in Walt Disney World theme parks. Here’s a look at what’s in store:
  • Showcasing floats and characters appearing at Walt Disney World Resort for the first time, Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” returns with its joyous sights and sounds. Direct from Disneyland Resort and marking its first engagement in Florida since 2001, the cherished parade will be led by Tinker Bell waving from the basket of a magical balloon aboard a new float. Pinocchio and Snow White join the parade this summer aboard bright new floats. Disney’s “Main Street Electrical Parade” is set for its summer-long nighttime premiere June 6 at Magic Kingdom.
  • The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios welcomes “drop-ins” this summer with even more pulse-racing surprises. New lighting effects created especially for “Summer Nightastic!” will bring unexpected frights to guests who step into that infamous service elevator … if they dare.
  • “Summer Nightastic!” also means music! In the courtyard of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, “Rock N’ Glow Dance Party” will have guests wanting to “trip the light fantastic” to sizzling summer sounds being spun by DJs. And at Epcot, the Sounds Like Summer Concert Series returns (June 12-July 31) with bands playing musical tributes to artists who filled summers gone by with musical magic.
  • What could be more summery than fireworks on a star-studded night? Magic Kingdom will treat guests to “Summer Nightastic Fireworks Spectacular,” filling the night sky with vivid colors and brilliant visual effects while whimsical music fills the air.

Classic Disneyland Fact or Fiction: The Matterhorn Basketball Court

Debunking the rumor of a Basketball court at the peak of the Matterhorn at Disneyland.

Fact!
A small, attic-like space near the top of the Matterhorn structure does indeed contain a basketball rim, backboard, and floor markings. (This cramped area is smaller in size than a regulation half-court, so the term “basketball court” is used rather loosely here.)
This common piece of Disney lore has it that Disneyland’s Matterhorn house a basketball court because at the time it was built, an Anaheim city ordinance prohibited the building of structures exceeding a certain height — with the single exception of sports facilities.
In order to skirt this law, Walt Disney supposedly had a “basketball court” installed within the Matterhorn so that he could claim the structure to be a sports arena and thereby avoid the height restrictions.
This legend is nothing more than a bit of fanciful fun: the Matterhorn was finished in 1959, but the city of Anaheim did not have regulations restricting the height of structures until the 1970’s (and even if they had, they probably wouldn’t have allowed Disney to get away with such a blatant violation of them based on semantic trickery).

The small area atop the Matterhorn is used as a rest and preparation area for the costumed climbers who sometimes entertain park guests by scaling the mountain. According to the Disney Channel program “Inside Out,” the basketball court came to be when one of these climbers brought in and installed a basketball hoop and backboard for use as an amusement to pass the time when inclement weather or other conditions prevented the climbers from working outside the mountain.

"Behind the Waves" Gives Guests an Inside Look at Environmental Programs at Disney Cruise Line

Guests sailing on the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder now have a unique opportunity to learn about environmental efforts aboard Disney Cruise Line through a behind the scenes video hosted by Disney Channel’s Brenda Song.

Aptly titled “Behind the Waves,” the video provides an inside look at conservation programs and operations both in guest areas and backstage onboard the ships and at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.  Covering topics of shipboard recycling efforts, energy savings, water conservation and programs protecting wildlife in Disney Cruise Line ports of call, the video showcases strides being made by the cruise line while also engaging guests to help support those efforts.

“We are excited to be able to share this inside look at some of the environmental programs we have in place on the ships and island,” said Tom Wolber, Senior Vice President of Operations.  “I hope that in learning about some of the efforts we’re supporting at sea, our guests will be inspired to look at actions they can take to conserve in their own lives.”

Viewers of “Behind the Waves” are guided through the facts and environmental tips by actress Brenda Song, star of the hit Disney Channel series, “The Suite Life on Deck.”  From switching to energy efficient light bulbs to processing up to 405 tons of recyclables each year, “Behind the Waves” showcases environmental facts about Disney Cruise Line operations including:

  • Both the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder have shipboard Environmental Officers dedicated to overseeing all environmental procedures and programs.
  • Up to a third of the water used onboard the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder is saved through a process where air conditioning condensation is collected and then used it to rinse the outside decks of the ships.
  • An innovative hull coating on both ships helps increase fuel efficiency by enhancing hydrodynamic properties as the ships sail through the seas.
  • A unique program to process used cooking oil from the ships’ galleys produces biodiesel fuel for machinery and small vehicles on Castaway Cay.

For more information on environmental programs taking place at Disney Cruise Line, please review the DCL Environmental Fact Sheet on the “Environment” tab of this website.

New Concept for Disney World Beauty and the Beast Restaurant

Beauty And The Beast Castle

New Concept for Disney World Beauty and the Beast Restaurant

It seems that there will be a magical transformation to occur at the upcoming Beauty and the Beast Inspired Restaurant that is apart of the Fantasyland Expansion.

Not unlike its magical transformation of a frog into a princess or a beast into a prince, the Disney wizards plan to conduct a daily metamorphosis of its planned 552-seat Be Our Guest restaurant from a casual, quick-service lunch spot into an elegant, full-service dinner experience. The multi-purpose establishment will be themed to the film, Beauty and the Beast, and will be located in the Beast’s Castle, part of the Fantasyland expansion at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. The new Fantasyland attractions are scheduled to open in 2012 and 2013.

Disney will test the quick-change, dual-purpose restaurant concept with the expanded Cantina de San Angel, now under construction at the Mexico Pavilion at Epcot.

We are looking forward to both restaurants. If you have been visiting the site for any length of time you will know that San Angel Inn is one of my favorite restaurants. I would love to be there for the grand opening but I will just have to settle for pictures and video as we get ever closer to that date.

New Retro Inspired Tees Have Landed at Disney Parks

If you’ve been to the park lately then you’ve probably seen some of the attraction t-shirts currently available in our stores, including the Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain. As we gear up for our 55th anniversary, our Product Development team headed to the vault to pay tribute to some of the attractions seen throughout the years. Just this week we added the Matterhorn Bobsleds and Flying Saucers to the list of available attraction tees.
New Retro Inspired Tees Have Landed at Disney Parks

Associate Product Developer Summer Bloomfield is the driving force behind these retro-inspired attraction tees. She let me know that Disney enthusiasts can plan on seeing many more in the future, at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. When asked about her inspiration to create the tees, Summer said: “Everyone has their favorite attraction, that one thing they have to do when they’re here. For years, a lot of this artwork has been seen in a 2D or flat art format, and now we can bring it to you on a whole different level. It’s a great opportunity to pay tribute to some of our most popular attractions and fan favorites.” Summer assures us that we’ll most likely see new retro-inspired attraction shirts next year, representing Disneyland and Magic Kingdom park, respectively, which means you may find a t-shirt on one coast that you may not find on the other.

Wondering where you can snag a tee for yourself? These attraction tees can be found at D Street at the Downtown Disney District as well as inside Disneyland park.

"World's Fastest Painter" Creates Mickey Mouse Art.

The recent grand opening of D-Street at Downtown Disney in Florida included some surprises…like a speed painter creating his interpretation of Mickey Mouse. It took artist Rock Demarco only minutes to paint Mickey but here it is in 60 seconds.
Demarco, who is known as the world’s fastest painter, was also commissioned to design some Vinylmation figures at the D-Street event.

Ask A Disney Question: How Often Does DCL Change Their Menus?

Ask A Disney Question: How Often Does DCL Change Their Menus?

This question comes from Natalie, who asks:  “Does the Disney Wonder food menus change often? If so, how often and do you know how I can find out what has changed before I go?

The frequency that Disney Cruise Lines (DCL) changes menus is a thorny issue for frequent cruisers, who complain that the menu doesn’t change often enough.  There’s no set time that restaurants change their menus, but figure every two to three years.  For example, the most recent signature restaurant to change, Palo, changed just a few months ago so expect it to remain the same for some time.  I called DCL and while the cast member was helpful, she couldn’t offer much help in the way of predicting any menu changes in the near future.  My best advice would be to read the DCL board at Disboards where you will generally hear about any DCL changes right way or to call DCL right before your trip.

Good luck and thanks for your question and for reading the site!
