Walt Disney World Resort will continue as sponsor of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge through 2013

Walt Disney World Resort will continue as sponsor of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge through 2013

Building on a legacy of support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Walt Disney World Resort will continue as sponsor of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney through 2013. Walt Disney World Resort and ESPN made the joint announcement today.

“As a company that values diversity and supports education, we are proud to renew our commitment to the MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney,” said Eugene Campbell, vice president of minority business development for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “The MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney is more than a game – it’s a weekend long celebration for our community filled with events that encourage young people to achieve their dreams.”

“We are truly pleased to extend our agreement with Walt Disney World Resort as our presenting sponsor of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge,” said Nikki Godfrey, executive director, MEAC/SWAC Challenge. “Their ongoing support will contribute to the continued growth and success of this event and ESPN’s commitment to HBCU football.”

The MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney, an ESPN Regional Television (ERT) owned-and-operated event, features football teams from two prominent Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) conferences – the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).  This year, the event showcases a match-up between the MEAC’s Delaware State University Hornets and the SWAC’s Southern University Jaguars on Sunday, Sept. 5, live at 12 p.m. ET on the networks of ESPN from Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium.

Each year thousands of fans travel from across the country to the game, staying in local hotel rooms and dining in restaurants across Central Florida, creating a positive economic impact for the region.

Walt Disney World Resort also sponsors numerous events associated with the annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney:

  • ESPN 101 High School Career Panel – This year more than 300 high school juniors and seniors discovered how to take their passion for sports and entertainment and apply it to real-life careers. The Walt Disney World Clubhouse of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida hosted students from Jones, Oak Ridge and Timber Creek high schools.
  • MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney Legends Reception – This year, NFL Hall of Famer Mel Blount and Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams led a group of six honorees from Historically Black Colleges and Universities in a celebration of academics and athletics.

The Best Thing I Love About Disney Is … The Haunted Mansion

The Best Thing I Love About Disney Is … The Haunted Mansion

It’s not the most thrilling attraction at Walt Disney World and yes, parts of it can be a little bit hokey. For some unexplained reason I am drawn to the Haunted Mansion time after time on each and every visit. I ride this attraction more than any other whether I am at Walt Disney World or the Disneyland Resort. I’m absolutely hooked on it and I always have been!! Why – it’s pure Disney.

I was a little bit concerned that the major overhaul in 2007 might destroy what I had come to know and love. I initially felt that by expanding the story of the bride, which had never been planned for the attraction, the whole attraction might become a confused mess with an incoherent back story. Boy, was I ever wrong. The imagineers did an amazing job fitting it in and tying everything together.

Also, some of the new effects they added i.e. Madame Leota’s head floating in space and the footsteps on the staircase were spectacular. There are a lot of us who consider ourselves “old school” Haunted Mansion purists who think that the attraction is now better than it ever was. There is definitely not 100% agreement on that but everyone is absolutely entitled to their opinion. If all the major changes to Disney attractions were/are done as well as this one the concern generally expressed by purists (me included) to changes will diminish. Bravo Imagineers!!!

Disney off the Beaten Path: Tom Sawyer Island.

Disney off the Beaten Path: Tom Sawyer Island.

If there was ever an undiscovered treasure in Walt Disney World, it’s Tom Sawyer Island and Ft. Langhorn, located in the Magic Kingdom.   Really, I should know:  I’ve been going to the parks for over 20 years and I never visited this attraction until my trip last December.   The day I finally visited was basically by default.   Frontierland was so crowded we could barely get around when my husband and I noticed that the raft  over to the island was empty, so we grabbed the kids and decided to give it a try.  It only took a few minutes to realize that we’d been overlooking a truly amazing experience.  Based on Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the island is Walt Disney’s favorite boyhood book come to life.   Featuring caves, a fort, winding trails, a playground, windmill, barrel and suspension bridges,  and a refreshment area,  the tree-filled island seems cooler and is certainly quieter than anywhere else  in the park.  It’s a great place to spend an hour or even an afternoon.

Disney off the Beaten Path: Tom Sawyer Island.

To get to Tom Sawyer island, you’ll take one of four small rafts from Tom’s Landing located across from Big Thunder Rail Road. The rafts are all named  for characters in the book:  Injun Joe, Huck Finn, Becky Thatcher and Tom Sawyer.  Each raft carries about 55 people and contrary to popular belief, they do not run on rails or tracks but are free floating vessels.

Here’s the thing about Tom Sawyer Island:  It’s what you used to imagine playing in when you were a kid, regardless of where you’re  from or who you are.  Remember running around your imaginary fort, hiding in the trees and chasing bad guys?  Or maybe you pretended to be a princess dancing around your castle?  Well that’s the essence of Tom Sawyer Island, the old-fashioned yet timeless kid fantasy, a place that can be anything, really.  Space Mountain may be fast.  Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin may loud and bright.  But  Tom Sawyer lets a kid engage in the entire experience and use his imagination in a way that few other attractions do.

Early in the morning, cast members hide several paintbrushes for guests to find.  If you find one, let a cast member know and you’ll be rewarded with a small prize, such as a soft drink or a pass to get to the front of the line of an attraction,  for your entire group.  The island is a great place for kids to stretch their legs and for parents to relax and since it’s Disney, it’s all very safe.  Kids will love climbing up and down the stairs at Fort Langhorn and exploring all the rooms.  From the lookout towers, they can fire popguns at imaginary targets.

Disney off the Beaten Path: Tom Sawyer Island.

One interesting aspect of Tom Sawyer Island is the perspective you get of other attractions on the “mainland.”  I really enjoyed seeing the Haunted Mansion from the island, as well as the riverboat going past with Princess Tiana and the cast from Princess and the Frog.

Disney off the Beaten Path: Tom Sawyer Island.

Tom Sawyer Island usually opens at 10:00 a.m. and closes at Dusk.  If you want to get a snack, Aunt Polly’s Place sells sandwiches and refreshments. It’s open seasonally.  Even when it’s closed, Aunt Polly’s makes a great place to sit and relax; consider bringing a sack lunch and eating it there.

Finally, Tom Sawyer Island is a great place for kids (or adults) with sensory issues who need a little bit of time away from all the excitement and noise of the Magic Kingdom, however, make sure they’re okay with the ride over. It’s very smooth, relatively quiet, and only takes a few minutes once everyone is loaded, but you’ll want to explain to your child  what she should expect.  Try watching from the docks if you’re worried about how your child will react.  Unfortunately, the island is not accessible by wheelchair or scooter.  You’ll need to take children out of strollers before you board the raft.

Disney World Quick Tips – Surviving Your Visit In Comfort

Disney World Quick Tips – Surviving Your Visit In Comfort

Rather than just one quick tip, I wanted to offer suggestions of things you can do both prior to and during your visit to Walt Disney World so you will feel as good at the end of your visit as you did at the start.

  1. Begin a walking regimen at least 60 days in advance of your visit to get used to extended bouts of walking, a way of life at Walt Disney World.
  2. If you are planning on getting new footwear for your visit, get them when you start your walking regimen so you can break them in – super important!!
  3. Two or three weeks before your visit, increase your intake of water to make sure you are initially hydrated and your body becomes accustomed to the intake (cuts down on bathroom stops). While actually at Walt Disney World make it a point to stay hydrated.
  4. Plan rest periods each day. A dip in the pool and a short lie down will make a world of difference.
  5. If you are on a somewhat extended visit, plan a rest day in the middle. That means either no park visit or a short half day with the rest of the day at your resort or at something a bit more mundane like miniature golf, a movie, etc.
  6. Please don’t “Commando” tour – take time to look around and smell the roses.

These are just some things that we do and have found that we generally feel wonderful at the end of the visit. Have a wonderful trip!!

Best thing I love about Disney is… Top 10 List

Best thing I love about Disney is… Top 10 List

Here is a  top 10 list of things I am looking forward to from our upcoming trip to Disneyworld next October. Having to wait a whole year before going back to Disneyworld is going to be painful but it could be alot worse.

10. Being at Disneyworld – From the moment we get to the parks till it is time to go home I can’t seem to get enough of this wonderful place.

9. Ferry Ride between Epcot and Hollywood Studios – Just something very relaxing about the boat ride between the 2 parks. I wish they let you eat on the ride cause I would buy a huge box of popcorn and go to town.. I have been known to sneak a snack or two while sitting in the back outside.

8. Boulangerie Patisserie – at Epcot in France. Just a great place to sit and have a delicious desert and a coffee and watch people walk by. The deserts are so savory and just melt in your mouth.

7. San Angel Inn –  I just love the atmosphere and food at the San Angel Inn. Most romantic restaurant in all of Walt Disney World.

6. Toy Story Mania – Just an all around fun ride! Only been on it a handful of times and look forward to experiencing it again and again.

5. Boma Flavors of Africa – A flavor explosion of great foods and best part is it’s all you can eat!

4. Pirates of the Caribbean – My absolute favorite ride at Disney. First of the smell of the ride, I dont know why but I love that old musty smell. Then being the dark floating down the river. I also love the addition of Jack Sparrow! Finally once I hear that song it is in my head for the rest of the day!

3. Disney Characters – I love the look on my daughters face when she gets to meet a Disney character. That smile and laugh of hers is just priceless.

2. Tonga Toast at the Kona Cafe – Best breakfast item in all of Walt Disney World!

1. Ohanu Restaurant – By far my favorite meal in all of Disney! From the marinated steak skewers to the Bread pudding. There is nothing I don’t absolutely love there.

What are your Disney top 10 things you like to do, eat, or see? Let us know in the comment section below!

Oldies But Goodies – Where Do I Find Out…

Oldies But Goodies – Where Do I Find Out…

You have decided to go to Walt Disney World fellow Oldie but you need to find information so you know when to go, where to stay, and what is happening while you are there. Fear not, there is enough information available on the internet to make your head spin all the way around several times. There is almost too much information out there but if you approach the internet logically you can find exactly what you need. I could list literally hundreds of sites but I’m going to introduce you to those that I have found to be the most useful. To begin with, you are at one of the best and most current right now: http://www.chipandco.com/. The site is updated with the most current information available literally on an hourly basis so what you get is the best general information available. Let’s get to the best of the rest!!

Overall super planning site: AllEars is a site I visit almost daily. You can find it here: http://allears.net/index.html. This site has been around for over 15 years and is full of planning type information covering every area from general planning to accommodations to dining including menus from every restaurant on site. It’s an outstanding website.

Subscription sites: There are several available but the two standouts are Tour Guide Mike and Touring Plans. They are located here: http://www.tourguidemike.com/ and here: http://www.touringplans.com/.

Naturally, there is a fee for each site and all of the details are on the site. I personally use Tour Guide Mike every trip because I do not do detailed touring plans and am far more interested in the tips on the site and the Least Crowded Parks charts.

Discussion Boards: Of all of the Disney discussion boards on the internet I think you get the best information at the Passporter Boards. The folks there are super friendly and well informed. You will never be criticized for asking what may seem to an experienced Disney traveler, a simple question. You will get a welcome and an accurate answer. You can find these boards at: http://www.passporterboards.com/forums/. Great people with tons of knowledge.

Just to give you an idea of just how much is actually out there you can take a look here: http://www.disney-links.com/ and here: http://disneybloggers.blogspot.com/. It’s a bit scary but if you stick to the sites mentioned above until you become familiar with what is available you will then be able to make better use of these sites. If you love a good Disney News Scroll check out Disney Detectives too.

Happy info hunting and as always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World my Senior Buddies!!!

The Best Thing I Love about Disney World – Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin.

The Best Thing I Love about Disney World - Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin.

Did you know that after fourteen consecutive rides on Buzz Lightyear you can start to feel a bit woozy?  It’s true. It’s also true that your trigger finger might get a little sore and you may start to halucinate that the rock formations in the second room look like naked people (okay, I swear one of them does. I’m not crazy.  Imagineers get lonely too.). But it’s all worth it when you save the universe from the evil Emperor Zurg over and over again. You might even score 999,999 points and become a Galactic Hero. Oh yeah. And your high school shop teacher said you wouldn’t amount to anything. Ahem.

Buzz Lightyear is a simple attraction brilliantly executed.  The queue can look really long but it moves pretty fast, so as long as you’re inside the building, you’ll be saving the universe in no time.  The queue itself has a few fun things to keep you occupied, like a life-sized Buzz Lightyear telling you about your upcoming mission. It’s a good time for a photo op.  Once on board your spaceship, you’ll shoot at targets as you ride through the attraction, attempting to keep Zurg and his minions from stealing all the batteries in the universe.  This is one of those attractions you kind of hope gets stuck so you can sit there and pick off targets.  There are two lasers on board, one for each guest, and a little wheel for the one who turns the ship. Decide ahead of time who will steer, or it could get ugly.

Even though there are only two lasers and therefore two seats, you can easily fit a small child in the middle.  The attraction isn’t overly loud and doesn’t have a lot of flashing lights, so most people with sensory issues should be okay. Really, the loudest part of the ride is the queue.  This attraction is fine for almost anyone, 9 months to 99.  There aren’t a lot of surprise movements and the speed is slow, but not so slow that it’s boring.

There are lots of hints on how you can improve your score, so I’ll just leave you with my one rather obvious tip:  Hold the trigger the entire time rather than shooting multiple times.  Want more?  You can get some real tips here.

The Best Thing I Love about Disney is…The Monorail Spiel

The Best Thing I Love about Disney is…The Monorail Spiel
To me, there are no happier words spoken on Disney property than “Por favor manténgase alejado de las puertas.”

It may seem odd but when I hear the unmistakable warning to “Please stand clear of the doors” when riding the monorail, I know I’m on home on Disney property. Over the years, the monorail spiel has been updated and new voices have replaced old favorites. With one exception. The “Por favor manténgase alejado de las puertas” portion of the track, narrated by Jack Wagner, remains the original.

“Por favor manténgase alejado de las puertas” is one of the best things I love about Disney.

Kids sail free on select 2011 Caribbean cruises

Disney Cruise Line has announced its second kids-sail-free offer for 2011. To qualify for this offer, you must book a verandah stateroom (categories 4A to 7A only) with two full-fare guests. Kids must be 17 or younger and stay in the same stateroom.

Most seven-night Caribbean cruises from Jan. 8, 2011, through March 5, 2011 — excluding Feb. 19 — are eligible. This offer is also good for the Jan. 3, 2011, five-night Bahamas cruise that has two stops at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.

The Disney Magic sails out of Port Canaveral for most of 2011, alternating itineraries between the eastern Caribbean (St. Maarten and St. Thomas/St. John) and western Caribbean (Key West, Grand Cayman and Cozumel). Both trips stop at Castaway Cay.

The number of staterooms allocated for this offer is limited. Offer valid for U.S. and Canada residents only. Government taxes and fees not included. Get a free quote at PixieVacations.com

Disney Cruise Line had previously offered the kids-sail-free promotion on its seven-day spring 2011 Mexican Riviera cruises. With Disney Cruise Line’s new ship, the Disney Dream, coming to Port Canaveral next year, the Disney Wonder moves to the West Coast. The Wonder will spend the 2011 summer season in Alaska, but spring and fall will sail to the Mexican Riviera.
