Saving Money on Where You Stay at Disney World: Check Out All Your Options

Saving Money on Where You Stay at Disney World: Check Out All Your Options

When it comes to deciding where to stay at Walt Disney World, there are a wide variety of choices, from the many Disney properties, to off-resort hotels, to a vast supply of vacation homes and condos. How do you choose? And perhaps even more importantly: what is the most affordable choice for your Disney vacation?

The answer, as with many things when it comes to Disney vacation planning is, it depends.

Most people think that it is always cheaper to stay off-property, and that is just not always the case. There are a number of variables that will come into play here: time of the year, size of your family, and need for transportation while there, will all factor in your decision.

The busier times of year will be more expensive, and you may possibly have fewer choices. Disney will not typically offer as many promotions for these times of year as they will for the slower times. So off-site may be your best choice for saving money at Disney World during peak season but not always.

You need to look at the size of your family: if you have a number of children that will require more than one motel room, then a larger “suite”, villa, or rental home may be the most economical as compared to renting multiple rooms. The Walt Disney resort has villas that can accommodate larger groups of people, and Disney does at times offer discounts and packages on this “level” of accommodation. In other cases, some hotels/motels, both on and off property, may offer specials where two rooms could be cheaper than one room in a different location. You will also want to look beyond the traditional hotel/motel option and consider renting a vacation home, condominium, or time-share.  If you need the additional space, do the math: it can be a definite cost-saver.

And then you will want to consider how you are going to get around while at Disney World. You can stay with Disney and use their free resort transportation, consisting of buses, monorail, or boats. If you end up off-site then you will need a way to get to the parks: find out if your hotel/motel has a free shuttle. If not, or if you are staying in a private property, then you will need to factor in the cost of renting a car or van.

One of the best things about trying to plan an affordable Disney vacation, is that you have options: there are a number of ways to save money at Disney World. Choosing where you stay is a big part of any vacation budget, so be sure to check out all options, to make sure you are getting the most for the least money!

What have you found to be the most affordable options for where to stay at Disney World…for your family?

Nancy, her husband and college-age daughter live in the Baltimore MD area, but consider Walt Disney World their second “home”. She started her site, The Affordable Mouse, as a way to share ideas about how to plan affordable Disney vacations. Her favorite things at Disney World (in no particular order) are Soarin’, most of the food in World Showcase, Illuminations…and watching children’s faces light up when they see their favorite characters in person.

AAU youth baseball player beats cancer while playing in National Championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Thirteen-year-old Chris Siders of Pensacola, Fla., was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at age 11.  After multiple failed rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and beating cancer three separate times, Siders was placed on the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s wish list.  While his dream to meet former University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was granted, what he also wished for was to be back on the field with his AAU baseball team.
To help support Siders through his difficult time, his AAU baseball team shaved their heads when he lost his hair and carried around a cardboard photo of him to games and practices when he was too weak to make it.
Two years later, Siders has again defied the odds and he’s now an inspirational and active member of his AAU baseball team fighting for the AAU Baseball National Championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort.

Tommy Lee Jones and Dominic Cooper sign on for Captain America

Tommy Lee Jones and Dominic Cooper sign on for Captain America

This article comes to us from the HD Room:

Marvel Studios has officially announced Tommy Lee Jones and Dominic Cooper have joined the cast of Captain America: The First Avenger after weeks of each actor being rumored to appear in the Avengers universe film.

Jones will play US Army Colonel Chester Phillips who is described by Marvel as having “recruited Steve Rogers to join Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that created the Super Soldier known as Captain America” in the Captain America comics. He will, of course, be updated for the big screen and may play a role into talking Steve (Chris Evans) into taking the syrum.

Cooper will play a younger version of Tony Stark’s father, Howard Stark, whose connection to Captain America was revealed by the contents of a chest belonging to the now deceased billionaire industrialist. John Slattery played Howard seen in a Stark Expo film reel shot in the 1970s in Iron Man 2.

Captain America: The First Avenger begins production this summer in the United Kingdom. It hits theaters everywhere on July 22, 2011.

Best 4th of July viewing spots at Disneyworld

Just in time for the 4th of July, here are the best fireworks viewing spots for the Magic Kingdom and Epcot in Walt Disney World.

Magic Kingdom:

  • Main Street, U.S.A.
  • Tomorrowland Terrace patio.
  • Entrance to the ferry boats at the Transportation and Ticket Center.

Magic Kingdom resorts:

Epcot:

  • The Mexico and Italy pavilions offer spectacular views of the Epcot fireworks, including the Illuminations Reflections of Earth globe, which features video images.
  • Avoid spots in which large trees or buildings obstruct your view.
  • If the wind is blowing in your face, smoke will surely follow once the show starts. Find another spot.
  • If you don’t mind missing the globe’s video images and some of the fire, smoke, and laser effects that can only be seen from World Showcase, a great place to watch the fireworks is along the long walkway in front of Spaceship Earth. You will be ideally positioned to make a quick exit to the parking lot or monorail before the masses.
  • A great spot to view the fireworks is the small bridge between Mexico and World Showplace…ideally with a Mexican margarita in your hand.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios:

  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios offers a 4th of July fireworks show. Fantasmic! is the park’s regular nighttime show, however, while the Magic Kingdom and Epcot offer fireworks every night. Moreover, Disney’s Hollywood Studios was not designed to accommodate large crowds as well as the older Magic Kingdom and Epcot parks. Since the 4th of July is one of the most crowded days at the Disney parks, and Hollywood Studios is not known for its fireworks, the true fireworks aficionado would be happier at one of the older parks.

iPhone Company Tapulous Acquired By Disney

iPhone Company Tapulous Acquired By Disney

This breaking news comes to us from Tech Crunch:

Tapulous has been acquired by Disney. The iPhone gaming startup with several hits on its hands was founded by Bart Decrem, who will join Disney as a VP. COO Andrew Lacy is also joining Disney as a VP. Disney is very interested in social and mobile gaming, having recently invested in Playdom’s $33 million round.

Tapulous is a hot iPhone gaming startup which has raised only $1.8 million from angel investors including Marc Benioff, Jeff Clavier, and Andy Bechtolsheim. Legendary Silicon Valley mentor and Stanford professor Rajeev Motwani, who passed away last year, was also an investor. Its flagship game, Tap Tap Revenge, has numerous versions which have been downloaded millions of times. The basic game, which lets players tap to the rhythm of songs with their fingers is free, but players must pay for new songs. Its latest game is Tap Tap Radiation for the iPad.

Tapulous’ music-oriented games appeal to a younger crowd in particular. The company puts out versions of Tap Tap Revenge featuring the songs of specific artists such as Justin Bieber Revenge, Lady Gaga Revenge, Nickelback Revenge, and Nine Inch Nails Revenge. Its other mobile music, Riddim Ribbon is also a hit.

Hawaii resort Aulani may be key to Disney growth

Hawaii resort Aulani may be key to Disney growth

A great read from the Daily Disney at the Orlando Sentinel:

Nineteen months after breaking ground, Disney today will begin selling time-share interests in Aulani, a high-rise resort in Hawaii that company executives hope will be a template for future growth in their $11 billion-a-year theme-park division.

The 841-room hotel and time share, which carries a reported $800 million price tag, is the first test of Disney’s strategy to build stand-alone resorts and niche attractions in markets far from its massive theme-park resorts in Orlando and Anaheim, Calif.

If successful, Aulani will likely serve as a model for similar Disney projects in other markets — such as in Washington, where the company last year paid $11 million for 15 acres as a potential resort site. If it flops, Disney executives will be left scrambling for new strategies to wring profit growth from a maturing U.S. theme-park market.

“It’ll be a test to see if their brand can extend … outside of their traditional business,” said Michael Corty, a stock analyst who follows Walt Disney Co. for Morningstar Inc. “I would say they’ll be tested outside of their parks.”

Bread Pudding Recipe:

Ohana Bread Pudding a la mode with Bananas Foster Sauce
Yield: 6-8 servings.

5 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
3 cups whole milk
1 loaf challah bread or egg-style bread (large enough to fill 10 cups)
1/2 cup crushed, canned pineapple
1/4 cup sweetened shredded coconut
1/4 cup raisins (optional)
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1/2 gallon of vanilla bean ice cream
Sauce:
1 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup each: corn syrup and unsalted butter
1 cup each: heavy cream and spiced or dark rum
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 bananas

1. Heat oven to 350 F. In large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, salt, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cut bread in 1/2-inch cubes. Add bread, pineapple, coconut, and raisins (if desired) to egg-and-milk mixture. Grease large baking dish with butter. Add bread custard mix to the greased baking dish. Bake 1 hour and 10 minutes. Remove from oven. Let stand 5 minutes.
2. In a sauce pan, combine dark brown sugar, corn syrup, butter, and half of the heavy cream. Using high heat; bring to a rolling boil. Allow mixture to boil 10 minutes and add remaining heavy cream. Let it boil additional minute. Now add the rum and vanilla extract. Carefully flambe pan using a long stemmed lighter. Let boil until the flame goes out. Reduce to a simmer and stir with a high heat spatula. Peel and slice bananas; add them to the caramel sauce. Remove the caramel from the heat and set aside.
3. Place scoop of ice cream on top of each portion of bread pudding. Top with bananas Foster sauce.
Recipe note: Make the sauce as the bread pudding is baking to have both hot and ready to serve at the same time.
