A bittersweet ‘Toy Story’ Goodbye for John Morris, voice of Andy

A bittersweet 'Toy Story' Goodbye for John Morris, voice of Andy

Very touching article from the LA Times who talk with John Morris the voice of Andy in Toy Story 3:

His own toy story began 18 years ago. John Morris was a little boy, just 7 years old, and when he became part of Hollywood history he wasn’t even paying attention — he was too busy playing with some X-Men action figures to notice that he had won the voice role of Andy, the earnest and imaginative youngster at the center of Pixar’sToy Story” franchise.

“It was an open casting call for boys,” Morris, now 25, recalled. “I knew I was there for a job. But, I mean, at that moment, it was just about me and my toys. I was playing and was in my own world. I think that’s what got me the part. I was Andy.”

“Toy Story 3” has already pulled in $336 million worldwide since its June 18 release and $1.22 billion as a franchise. More than that, the newest edition has earned the strongest reviews of any major studio release this year. No one marvels at that more than Morris.

“Usually, people grow out of things, they move on,” Morris said. “It’s just amazing how many people still find the magic in these films. The stories are amazing. The characters … they’re like family. They hold a special place in your heart.”

What’s old is new again as ‘Captain EO’ returns to Epcot

What’s old is new again as ‘Captain EO’ returns to Epcot

This article comes to us from The Daily Disney at the Orlando Sentinel:

Walt Disney World continues its wave of nostalgia with the rebirth of Captain EO — a 3-D sci-fi movie featuring Michael Jackson and a crew of fuzzy space explorers — at Epcot.

The film, which ran at the theme park from 1986 to 1994, returns July 2 for a limited run, although Disney has not announced when it will stop the show. EO fans will see a familiar production through their special glasses.

“It’s a 3-D film, 70 mm, two projectors. We are showing it the same way we showed in 1986,” says Joe Tankersley, show producer.

“It’s also one of the first ‘4-D’ films, one of the first 3-D films with in-theater effects — wind, water and lighting,” he says. “That’s part of what makes it so special.”

Harry Potter & Disney Fans Love Butterbeer

Harry Potter & Disney Fans Love Butterbeer

Got butterbeer?

Harry Potter fans are all abuzz about butterbeer, and they’ve got the foamy mustaches to prove it.

The cold and creamy, frothy drink is the most popular food item at the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando, according to Universal spokesman Tom Schroder, with visitors lining up to try it.

“Then they would walk around and have this mustache on,” said Sabrina Sampson, 11, of Richmond, Va., who described the drink as tasting “like cream soda. It was somewhat thick, and it was really sweet, and then it got salty as you swallowed it, like butterscotch.”

Schroder said that about half the visitors to The Wizarding World sample butterbeer.

“There may be no bigger product launch smash this year than butterbeer,” WalletPop.com said.

“It’s interesting that one small thing they can sell for a few dollars is getting as much attention as the rides,” said Gabe Travers, who reviewed the park for WESH.com, the NBC affiliate in the Orlando area.

Immediately after The Wizarding World’s June 18 opening, butterbeer was one of the most searched-for terms on the Internet. A butterbeer recipe on MuggleNet.com got 3,445 hits when the park opened, up from an average 350 daily views before the opening, according to MuggleNet.com spokesman Andrew Sims. Now the recipe is averaging 1,200 daily views.

Even DISboards.com, a site for fans of Disney World, has a separate thread for comments related to Universal’s butterbeer.

Universal would not release its butterbeer recipe, but press materials describe the drink as “reminiscent of shortbread and butterscotch.”

In the Harry Potter books, butterbeer appears to have an inebriating effect, and some older online recipes include butterscotch schnapps, but the Universal version is nonalcoholic. In Bon Appetit’s January 2002 issue, author J.K. Rowling was asked what butterbeer tastes like, and she said: “I made it up. I imagine it to taste a little bit like less sickly butterscotch.”

The version sold at The Wizarding World was tasted and approved by Rowling herself.

“Everyone knows butterbeer was approved by J.K. Rowling, so people want to taste it and see if their tastebuds match up,” said Travers.

Visitors to the park see a large wooden barrel that bears the word “BUTTERBEER” as soon as they enter, and they can buy it from a street cart and inside The Three Broomsticks restaurant and Hog’s Head pub.

Butterbeer is sold in two varieties, regular and frozen, but many people buy both. “There are some two-fisted butterbeer moments happening,” said Schroder. The consensus among online fans appears to be that the frozen version is more delicious.

The drink is drawn from a tap, like a beer, and the dense, whipped topping is added from a separate tap. It’s served in cups, about $3 ($4 for frozen) for a disposable cup and about $10 ($11 for frozen) for a hard plastic souvenir stein.

Travers said if he were trying to make the drink at home, he’d “start with a good cream soda.” The hard part, he said, would be the topping: “It tastes like a Werther’s caramel candy but the foam had the consistency of a dairy or latte type of foam. It’s pretty dense; it floats on top.”

Robert Lima of Warwick, R.I., who says he still loves “all that is Harry Potter” even though he’s 24 years old, tried butterbeer a week after the park opened and described it as “frosty magical goodness!”

But Sabrina Sampson had one small reservation: “It was too sweet to chug down, but it was good for the first five sips or so.”

Disney Store Celebrates Grand Opening of New Store Design

Disney Store Celebrates Grand Opening of New Store Design

Yesterday, Disney Store celebrates the launch of its newly-designed store with a grand opening event at The Shops at Montebello complex in Montebello, Calif, just outside of Los Angeles. A crowning achievement of The Walt Disney Company, the high-tech makeover of Disney Store solidifies the retailer’s global leadership in children’s retail and activates the future transformation of its more than 300 locations worldwide. Among the many new attractions of the newly designed store is the first-ever Disney·Pixar CARS-branded RIDEMAKERZ experience which sets the stage for kids of all ages to build 1:18 scale toy custom cars inside of Disney Store. Disney Store executives, stars from the upcoming Disney Channel Original Movie “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” and characters from Disney·Pixar’s blockbuster film franchise Toy Story joined the festivities and greeted hundreds of Disney fans who waited excitedly for the opportunity to experience the innovative new store.

The Montebello store is the first of 20 newly designed Disney Store locations that will open across major markets in the United States and Europe in 2010. The 4,800-plus square foot store’s floor-to-ceiling remodel now features multimedia technology, interactive storytelling and Disney Store exclusive merchandise that bring Disney’s most beloved characters to life for families in the local community.

“As part of Disney, we’re committed to the value of entertainment and exclusive experiences,” said Jim Fielding, president of Disney Store Worldwide. “Disney is setting a new standard for the specialty retail category by integrating robust technology and creative store planning to make each visit customizable and that much more memorable. This is truly an immersive, one-of-a-kind retail experience for children and families that only Disney could deliver.”

Technology is integrated throughout the new store to create magical moments for guests:

The newly designed Disney Store is merchandised by franchise neighborhoods so guests can easily shop by character or theme and is anchored by several “hero fixtures” including:

  • The Disney·Pixar CARS-branded RIDEMAKERZ attraction is a one-of-a-kind immersive car building and customizing experience. Launching with three favorite CARS characters– Lightning McQueen, Mater and Sally– fans use tools to assemble their car, and their imagination to customize it with a wide selection of rims, side pipes, hoods scoops, blown engines, spoilers and many more accessories. Disney·Pixar CARS-branded RIDEMAKERZ toy vehicles will only be available within the new Disney Store design and, later this year, at RIDEMAKERZ retail locations.
  • The Disney Princess Magical Mirror – A child-sized princess castle anchors the Disney Princess neighborhood and inspires kids to make believe. As they walk under iconic castle they encounter a magical mirror and with the wave of a wand, they watch in delight as their favorite Disney Princess character appears.

A customizable shopping experience:
The new store concept also includes the launch of an all new in-store application where guests can customize their shopping experience. Accessed via an interactive kiosk with touch screen, this animated experience gives users the ability to navigate a 3-D view of all Disney Store and DisneyStore.com products and discover the latest Disney Store news via video clips, articles, and social media feeds. This application allows the Disney Store to share its news to customers, who can then share information and in-store events via email, Twitter and Facebook.

The Disney Store Theatre:
The newly designed stores will also feature a theater as part of its marquee attractions. Guests can pick from a selection of pre-loaded content that will be updated regularly and can view classic and new Disney entertainment, sneak peek previews, music videos and more. The theater will also serve for special in-store events such as reading time, scavenger hunts and more.

The “Pixie Dust Trail” and “Magical Trees”:
With is glistening blue glitter, the Pixie Dust Trail leads guests through the store and to major interactive elements as they enjoy a Disney-themed skyline and surrounding magical trees which are programmable with changing colors, images, and music set to an array of Disney themes.

The newly-designed Disney Store is scheduled to open in the United States this year at the following locations:

  • The Shops at Mission Viejo in San Diego, CA, is anchored by luxury retailers and offers an extensive merchandise mix in a sophisticated atmosphere. Disney Store will be located on the second level in a 5100-plus square foot space.
  • Disney Store on North State Street in Chicago, IL (Block 37 Complex) will anchor the southeast corner of the center in 4,464 square feet on Level one of the mall. The complex features an eclectic mix of shopping, dining and entertainment within a five-story atrium, located in the heart of Chicago’s Loop between Washington and Randolph on State Street.
  • Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold, NJ, offers a complete mix of department stores, specialty stores, restaurants and entertainment making the property an ideal location for the new Disney Store.
  • NorthPark Center in Dallas, TX, offers shoppers the best in every retail category, and the newly-designed Disney Store opening this fall will represent its premier children’s store.

Other locations to feature the new Disney Store design opening this year include: Roosevelt Field Mall in Garden City, NY; Santa Monica Place in Santa Monica, CA; International Plaza in Tampa, FL; Fashion Valley in San Diego, CA; Disney Store in Union Square in San Francisco, CA; and a two-story Disney Store in Times Square in November.

With each new store opening in 2010, Disney Store will designate a day for 10 percent of the sales to be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the United States.

Encore! Dream Our Dreams, A Musical Tribute to the Legacy of Disney

Encore! Dream Our Dreams, A Musical Tribute to the Legacy of Disney

This article comes to us from the Disney Parks Blog:

Rehearsals are underway for the Encore! Cast Choir and Orchestra’s summer production, Dream Our Dreams, A Musical Tribute to the Legacy of Disney. I had a chance to peek in on the volunteer ensemble last week as they practiced and was amazed by the sheer talent of the troupe; which is comprised of roughly 330 singers, 100 instrumentalists, 50 dancers and a production team of 40.

Encore! offers Cast Members an outlet for their creativity and a chance to showcase their talents while performing great music for worthy causes. Encore! producer Bruce Light says at least half of the group have day jobs outside of entertainment and aren’t performers by trade. For all involved, it’s a labor of love.

Since its inception in 2002, Encore! has donated the funds from its ticket sales to local charities, raising more than $115,000 to date. They’ve chosen Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central & Northern Florida as their 2010 beneficiary.

Already known for staging spectacular performances, Clay Price, Encore! co-founder, artistic director and conductor, claims this year’s shows are their most ambitious yet.

Come and see for yourself. Performances are open to the public and scheduled for Aug. 6 – 8 at Epcot World ShowPlace. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door and available through www.encorecentral.org.

Toy Story 3 Characters Already a Hit for Guests at Walt Disney World Resort

Toy Story 3 Characters Already a Hit for Guests at Walt Disney World Resort

Weeks before the release of Toy Story 3, guests at Walt Disney World Resort had a sneak peek at characters and storylines from the new hit film.

Since early May, guests have experienced the new characters in many ways, through attractions, shows and parades, merchandise, and food and beverage.

It’s a prime example of Disney putting synergy in motion across its various business units.

“We regularly evaluate synergy opportunities between our films and our parks, looking for ways to bring proven guest favorites to life in a way that only Disney can do,” said Darlene Papalini, vice president of global synergy, broadcast marketing and talent relations for Walt Disney World Resort. “Franchises are never manufactured but always organically come to life in our parks. The response of our guests to stories and characters determines the strength of the franchise.”

Papalini says the teams look at each franchise and story individually; there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Where there is a natural fit to bring in a new story or new characters from an existing franchise – like Toy Story for example – they carefully consider it.

The new characters from the latest chapter from the Toy Story franchise have already been popping up in numerous ways across Walt Disney World Resort:

  • A “balloon pop” game hosted by Rex and including new Toy Story 3 characters Trixie and Mr. Pricklepants has been integrated into the Toy Story Mania! attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
  • Also at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, guests visiting the Magic of Disney Animation can stop by the colorful toy room of the Sunnyside Day Care and meet Lotso, the newest star of Toy Story 3. Guests can also catch Lotso in the Block Party Bash parade at the park.
  • More than 50 Toy Story 3 merchandise items exclusive to theme parks have been sold at locations across property since May, including action figures, plush toys, t-shirts and even a plush Lotso that smells like strawberries.
  • Since April, various dining locations across property are using children’s beverage cups featuring Toy Story 3 characters, including a light up Buzz Lightyear straw clip.

Additionally, guest favorites from the Toy Story franchise, like the meet-and-greet photo opportunity with Woody and Buzz Lightyear across from the Toy Story Mania! attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, are spread out at locations across Disney Parks.

Papalini says the idea is to seamlessly bring new characters from the latest chapter of the story into the parks because as the film grows in popularity, more and more guests have an expectation of seeing the new characters.

Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund has Announced the 2010 Grant Recipients

Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund has Announced the 2010 Grant Recipients

Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund has announced the 2010 recipients of nearly $1.5 million in grants to protect vulnerable wildlife and ecosystems around the world.  The funding enables nonprofit organizations to provide support for more than 45 species across the globe–from protecting the critically endangered Sumatran rhino in Indonesia, to tracking northern jaguars in the foothills of Mexico, to studying the threats of the endangered green sea turtle.

“As part of Disney’s longstanding commitment to the environment, the work supported through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund  is more important today than ever in helping preserve our planet’s most precious resources,” said Dr. Beth Stevens, senior vice president, Environmental Affairs, The Walt Disney Company. “We are proud to support these organizations that are truly making a difference around the world to aid in the protection of wildlife and the natural environments they depend on to flourish.”
Over the past decade, the DWCF—through support from The Walt Disney Company and Disney Guests—has provided more than $15 million in grants for the study of wildlife, protection of habitats, land management plans, community conservation and education.  Along with a focus on support for species and habitat conservation science, the DWCF encourages programs that engage local residents and benefit both human and animal communities.

Below is a highlight of some of this year’s recipients:

·         Wildlife Trust: Black Lion Tamarin Conservation through Research and Community Involvement – Wildlife Trust teaches communities about sustainable development alternatives, including tree nurseries and handicrafts, to protect the black lion tamarins living in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest.

·         Northern Jaguar Project: Northern Jaguar Feline Photo Project – In an effort to reduce jaguar mortality and build conservation alliances with rural landowners, Northern Jaguar Project works directly with local ranch owners in Mexico to monitor and protect the species.

·         Save the Elephants: Elephants and Bees – Save the Elephants minimizes human-wildlife conflict by studying and researching innovative strategies to reduce crop-raiding. By using beehives as a deterrent, community crops are left un-touched and families have a new source of income through honey production.

·         University of Hawaii: Conserving the Green Sea Turtle in Hawaii – This program advances the understanding of the impact of pollution on endangered green sea turtles.  Through further research, conservationists are able to work more effectively with local communities and governments to protect the turtles.

·         International Rhino Foundation: Sumatran Rhino Conservation – The Sumatran rhino is considered the most endangered rhino species with numbers declining more than 70 percent in the past two decades. International Rhino Foundation is protecting the species through research and outreach programs in local communities.

To date the DWCF has accomplished the following milestones:

·         More than $1 million to primate conservation efforts

·         More than $900,000 to protect cats worldwide

·         More than $850,000 to elephant conservation

·         More than $850,000 to study and save sea turtles

·         More than $625,000 to rhino conservation efforts

Since 1998, the DWCF has also awarded more than $575,000 in Rapid Response funds to assist with more than 120 environmental and animal emergencies. In the past year, the DWCF has provided more than $125,000 to support efforts worldwide including veterinary care and vaccinations for animals in the wake of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti and rehabilitation efforts for the thousands of sea turtles affected by the winter cold snap in Florida. In 2009 additional support was provided through Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green  in which 100 percent of iTunes proceeds of the inspiring program anthem “Send it On” were directed to environmental charities through the DWCF.

Fantasyland Expansion:

  • Mickey and Minnie are moving to Exposition Hall once Toontown closes (announced for spring 2011). No word on if this will become their permanent greeting location, but most indicators point to yes.
  • Princesses are moving to Exposition Hall as well. Once the Fantasyland Forest is complete, the princesses and fairies will move to their appropriate locations.
  • Ariel is appearing in the Adventureland Veranda with Prince Eric. Once the Fantasyland Forest is complete, Ariel will move to her new grotto.
  • Pooh and Tigger are moving to Town Square. No final word on if the new Fantasyland Forest will include the 100 Acre Woods.

  • Disney’s Electrical Parade (DEP) has returned to the Magic Kingdom, the currect expected end date is August 14th.
  • The Hoedown has transformed into a Flash Mob in Frontierland! This change occurred on February 26th.
  • The Pirate Tutorial is performing on a new stage in Adventureland! The stage was tested in summer 2009, but has become permanent as of January 5th.
  • Tiana’s Showboat Jubilee was discontinued after January 3rd with little momentum to support a possible return.
  • Totally Tomorrowland Christmas was considered a success in 2009 so there is a strong indication it will be back in 2010!
