Disney workers may face choice: Accept contract or strike

Disney workers may face choice: Accept contract or strike

When Caitlin Owens, a 23-year-old attractions worker in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, studies the contract Walt Disney World has offered to its largest labor group, she sees herself losing ground. Owens, who must pay for pricey family medical insurance to cover her husband and daughter, says she would ultimately earn less money, as rising insurance premiums more than wipe out modest annual raises.

“With the resources that Disney has, the almost endless funding that Disney has, they can do better. They’re just choosing not to,” Owens said.

But when Andy Gonzalez, a 41-year-old chef’s assistant in Hollywood Studios, looks at the same proposal, he sees peace of mind. At a time when regional unemployment is almost 12 percent, Gonzalez said Disney is offering 3 1/2 years of job security — plus three raises and a bonus.

“Look at what happened to SeaWorld,” Gonzalez said, referring to the 125 layoffs that the Orlando marine park made earlier this month. “With this economy that we’re going through right now, we’re very happy to keep our jobs.”

Best Things I Love About Disney – Mickey’s PhilharMagic

Best Things I Love About Disney – Mickey’s PhilharMagic

When I first saw Mickey’s PhilharMagic, in 2003, I was less than impressed. As I look back, the reason became a little more apparent. It was the last day of our visit, we were both tired, and I had been lugging my 330+ pound body around in hot and humid weather for 8 days. Let’s face it we were tired and just a bit cranky so a new experience, like this attraction was to us, would really have to work hard to make a positive impression. Besides that, we were leaving the next day for home and we all know how that can ruin your day, don’t we!!

Since that time we have seen the attraction at least once or twice on each visit and we always enjoy it immensely. We go early in the visit, we don’t travel in September anymore, and I only have to lug 185 pounds around Walt Disney World these days. It’s not only extremely entertaining but it’s also a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Magic Kingdom while enjoying a superior attraction (good for Oldies like us).

The theater is very comfortable, the screen is huge (150 feet wide), it’s in 3-D, the story line is very clever, and the animation is absolutely up to the best of Disney standards. I won’t spoil the story line for those of you who haven’t visited the attraction but I will let you know that, as usual, Donald ends up in trouble. I doubt that many of you are shocked by that. You will also get to see scenes from many of the Disney classic films including all of your favorite characters. Everything about the presentation is great for kids, nothing scary or violent at all.

I always recommend that if you don’t enjoy a particular attraction, as long as it doesn’t cause you physical issues like motion sickness or something else, that you give it another chance. I did it with this one and Mission Space and was glad I did. I believe I may even give Expedition Everest another shot this October just to make sure it wasn’t my fault that I didn’t enjoy it. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Torch-Lighting Ceremony at Disney’s Polynesian Resort

Torch-Lighting Ceremony at Disney’s Polynesian Resort

If there is one thing I have really learned to appreciate during our annual visits to Walt Disney World, it is the plethora of opportunities for free family entertainment.  We were able to enjoy another of these great opportunities during our recent trip and I just had to share it with you.

Dinner at ‘Ohana, at Disney’s Polynesian Resort, has traditionally been my family’s sending song. We always have a wonderful family dinner at ‘Ohana  on the Friday night after Thanksgiving and enjoy some of THE best food to be had at Disney.  Hint: if you are planning to make a dining reservation for ‘Ohana, do it EARLY as it is one of the first table service restaurants to book up.

This year I decided to book our ADR for an earlier time than usual. I wanted to give us time to view the torch-lighting ceremony before our meal, so I reserved our ADR for 6:30pm.  We arrived about 5:45 and soon after we got there, the beautiful Lipoa, an entertainer at Ohana, gathered us together and took us down to the lobby to await the start of the ceremony.

Torch-Lighting Ceremony at Disney’s Polynesian Resort

She gave each of us a lei and talked with us about why we were visiting, how we were enjoying our time at Disney and commented on how handsome and strong my sons are. If you’re reading, Lipoa, thank you again. She was very welcoming to us and to all of the other “cousins” waiting for the show (although I just kept thinking how cute her dress was and wondering where she got it).

Torch-Lighting Ceremony at Disney’s Polynesian Resort

Right at 6:00pm, Chief Machuttie positioned himself just inside the Great Ceremonial House. He blew into his conch shell to create a trumpet-like sound in order to announce the commencement of the torch-lighting ceremony and then asked everyone to follow him outside.

Two other cast members cordoned off an area near the entrance and Lipoa took her place behind two large drums. She began a Polynesian chant while rhythmically beating the drums and a moment later, Chief Machuttie returned with a large baton with fire blazing at both ends.

He performed traditional fire-knife ceremonial dancing and then began lighting several torches. He continued with more twirling and fire-eating. It was quite impressive, although hard for me to capture with appropriate lighting on my camera.

One can’t help but notice how gorgeous the landscape is at the entrance to the Polynesian. Waterfalls and beautiful foliage are just the right view for this show, which welcomes the evening. The event lasts maybe five to seven minutes and is a really nice way to start off your last night, or any night for that matter.

If you happen to be in the area of the Polynesian around 6:00 weeknights, check out this show. You will be glad you did. This is one of the extra themed events that Disney offers that just make everything a little more special. For me, anything my family can enjoy all together is very special to me!

Disney's Mean Girls 2 Movie Poster and More

ABC Family will present the worldwide premiere of Paramount Famous Productions‘ “Mean Girls 2,” it was announced today by Tom Zappala, Executive Vice President, Program Acquisitions & Scheduling, ABC Cable Networks Group. “Mean Girls 2,” the long-awaited follow-up to the 2004 hit film “Mean Girls,” will premiere on ABC Family on Sunday, January 23 at 8:00PM ET/PT. The film, which wrapped production in Atlanta in August, is directed by Melanie Mayron, and written by Cliff Ruby & Elana Lesser and Allison Schroeder.”We’re thrilled to bring the highly-anticipated sequel to the hit film ‘Mean Girls’ to the network,” said Tom Zappala, Executive Vice President, ABC Cable Networks Group. “‘Mean Girls 2’ is a perfect fit for ABC Family’s Millennial audience, who are avid fans of the original film.”

“Mean Girls 2” stars Meaghan Martin (“10 Things I Hate About You,” “Camp Rock 1 & 2”), Maiara Walsh (“Desperate Housewives”), Jennifer Stone (“Wizards of Waverly Place”), Nicole Gale Anderson (“Make It or Break It””), Claire Holt (“H20: Just Add Water”) and Diego Boneta (“Pretty Little Liars”) in a classic high school story about good versus plastic. When new girl Jo (Martin) arrives at North Shore High School, her main goal is to skate under the radar to survive her senior year and definitely not get involved in any of the typical high school trappings. But her plan goes awry quickly when she meets Abby (Stone), a girl stuck at the low end of the high school food chain and favorite target of “The Plastics” (Walsh, Holt and Anderson). After defending Abby against the queen bee of the school and lead Plastic, Mandi (Walsh), Jo is dragged into the very same girl drama she was hoping to avoid. Tim Meadows returns as the school’s principal, Mr. Duvall.

“Mean Girls 2” will be available on DVD on February 1, 2011, from Paramount Home Entertainment.
