New iPhone App Planned for Disneyland's Hidden Mickeys

Disneyland Hidden Mickey fans, your time has come.

An iPhone app for tracking down the Hidden Mickeys at Disneyland will soon join the app for Hidden Mickeys at Walt Disney World, which has been delighting guests to the Florida parks since 2009.

Fans can sign up to be notified when the new app launches by visiting here.

Both apps are produced by Campbell/Gambill Designs of Orlando, Florida, and are based on the best-selling books by Steven M. Barrett, known to thousands of Disney fans as “Mr. Hidden Mickeys.”

Hidden Mickeys are images of Mickey Mouse cleverly concealed throughout Disney theme parks, hotels, restaurants and other areas. Created by Disney artists and designers, they have become a vacation destination in their own right.

Barrett has documented the craze in Hidden Mickeys: A Field Guide to Walt Disney World’s Best Kept Secrets (Intrepid Traveler, $12.95) and Disneyland’s Hidden Mickeys: A Field Guide to Disneyland Resort’s Best Kept Secrets ($9.95). The third book in the series is Hidden Mickeys Go To Sea: A Field Guide to the Disney Cruise Line’s Best Kept Secrets ($6.95).

A physician in real life, Barrett lives in Orlando and has been visiting Walt Disney World regularly since he fell under its spell in the 1980s. He is also the author of The Hassle-Free Guide to Walt Disney World 2011, now in its 10th edition (Intrepid Traveler, $15.95).

Barrett maintains a web site devoted to the latest hidden Mickeys sightings at

Lemonade Mouth Set To Premiere Friday April 15 On Disney Channel

Lemonade Mouth Set To Premiere Friday April 15 On Disney Channel

Themes of “believing in yourself,” “following your dreams,” “celebrating family” and “staying true to yourself” are explored in the triumphant, music-driven “Lemonade Mouth,” a Disney Channel Original Movie based on the book of the same name, set to premiere FRIDAY, APRIL 15 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel. The movie joins the powerhouse franchise that has delivered cable TV‘s No. 1 original movie telecast in Total Viewers for the past four years and TV’s No. 1original movie among Tweens 9-14 for the past nine years.

Geared towards kids, tweens and families, “Lemonade Mouth” tells the story of how a powerhouse band came to be after five uncelebrated students with a passion for music find each other and ultimately become the voice of their generation.

Directed by award-winning film director Patricia Riggen (“La Misma Luna“) and executive-produced by Debra Martin Chase (“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” Disney Channel’s “The Cheetah Girls” movies), the movie showcases a remarkably talented cast led by popular stars of Disney Channel hits: Bridgit Mendler (“Good Luck Charlie“) as lead vocalist Olivia White, Adam Hicks (Disney XD’s “Zeke and Luther”) as keyboardist Wen Giford, Hayley Kiyoko (“Wizards of Waverly Place”) as electric guitarist Stella Yamada, Naomi Scott (Disney Channel UK’s “Life Bites”) as bass guitarist Mohini and newcomer Blake Michael (who landed the role via an open casting call), as percussionist Charlie Delgado. Also starring are: Nick Roux (“The Suite Life on Deck”) as Scott Pickett, Chris Brochu (“Soul Surfer”) as Ray Beach, Tisha Campbell-Martin (“My Wife and Kids”) as music teacher Miss Reznick and Christopher McDonald (“Boardwalk Empire”) as Principal Brenigan.

The movie’s soundtrack, featuring original songs spanning hip-hop, rock and pop/rock, will be available from Walt Disney Records TUESDAY, APRIL 12 on iTunes and in stores nationwide. Eighteen year-old Adam Hicks has songwriting credits on three of the music tracks, marking the first time a cast member has written a song performed in a Disney Channel Original Movie.

“Lemonade Mouth” introduces an unlikely ensemble of five students — Olivia, Wen, Stella, Mohini and Charlie – who, after meeting in detention, gradually realize their shared musical connection and belief that it’s time for the students of Mesa High to stand up and be heard on things big and small (ranging from the school Principal’s exclusive support of the athletic programs to the removal of the popular organic lemonade from the cafeteria). Ultimately, as they open up to each other and form friendships, they start a band — Lemonade Mouth –that soon resonates with students sidelined by the high school elite. However, not everyone in the school is ready to cheer them on, especially since the popular rock group Mudslide Crush is determined to maintain their headline status and win the coveted Rising Star music competition at Mesa High.

Based on the book Lemonade Mouth by Mark Peter Hughes, the script was written by April Blair, and is directed by award-winning Patricia Riggen (“La Misma Luna” aka “Under the Same Moon”), executive-produced by Debra Martin Chase (“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” Disney Channel’s “The Cheetah Girls” movies), co-produced by Gaylyn Fraiche (“Just Wright,” “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2”) and choreographed by Chris Scott (“So You Think You Can Dance”). “Lemonade Mouth” was filmed on location in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and is a production of GWAVE Productions, LLC.

The Anatomy of Kids’ Vacation Memories

The Anatomy of Kids’ Vacation Memories

A nationally projectable survey of kids between 6-17 years of age conducted by Ypartnership, the travel service marketing company headquartered in Orlando, has revealed how and where kids’ best vacation memories are formed, as well as their favorite ways to record and share them.
Vacations taken with parents and siblings were cited as the “most awesome” by kids. The most frequently mentioned were either a religious retreat (27%) or theme park vacation (26%). And underscoring the yearning most kids have to spend quality time with their parents, the most memorable aspect of these vacations was simply spending time with family.
Theme parks and cruises top the list of kids’ dream vacation destinations. Specifically, 83% want to go to Walt Disney World Resort and 77% are interested in taking a cruise.
And as if we didn’t already know, KIDS RULE, both at home and while on vacation. Just over eight out of ten (81%) help plan what the family does and where the family dines out; nearly 7 in 10 help plan where to go and what to do on vacation.
The kids also identified the way in which new technology has influenced the manner in which they “memorialize” vacation memories. Digital photography and postings “in real time” on social media websites and blogs top the list. Souvenirs also play an important role in the recall of vacation memories, mentioned by almost half of kids (47%), second only to taking digital photos (69%).
Reminiscent of that old Art Linkletter Show “Kids Say The Darndest Things,” the kids who participated in the survey also shared the upsides and downsides of vacationing with the family:

Kids Enjoy Special Privileges On Vacation:

  • Stay up late (86%)
  • Watch TV in bed (69%)
  • Sleep late (65%)
  • Eat dessert before dinner (38%)

The Downside of Driving to a Vacation:

  • Sharing car with brother/sister (37%)
  • Sitting too long (15%)
  • Not having control of the stereo (14%)
  • Dad threatening to turn around (7%)
  • Dad not asking for directions (2%)

The Downside Of Sharing a Hotel Room:

  • Sharing bed with brother/sister (36%)
  • Dad snoring (21%)
  • Sharing bathroom (19%)

Preferred Things to Bring on Vacation:

  • iPod (22%)
  • Cell phone (20%)
  • Video game (20%)
  • Stuffed animal (18%)
  • Pet (7%)

Biggest Chicken on Thrill Rides:

  • Mom (38%)
  • Me (16%)

A total of 615 children from across the U.S. participated in the survey, which was commissioned by Walt Disney Parks & Resorts. 64% of respondents took at least one vacation with both parents and siblings last year; 19% with one parent and siblings. All statistical estimates have an error interval of less than 2% at the 95% level of confidence.

Guest Images Come to Life on Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World Resort

Guest Images Come to Life on Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World Resort

In a dramatic new projection show filled with special effects and magic, Cinderella Castle will transform into a shimmering canvas for images of Walt Disney World guests and the memories they made that day at Magic Kingdom.

In the nighttime spectacle, photos of guests captured that very day in the park will be projected larger-than-life among the spires and turrets of Cinderella Castle.  In similar fashion, guest images will be projected onto “it’s a small world” on select nights at Disneyland Park in California, beginning Jan. 27.

The ten-minute experience – called “The Magic, The Memories, and You!” – will dazzle park guests on both coasts in ways never before experienced, themed to beloved Disney stories and with playful animated sequences that seem to defy the architecture of the buildings.  The spectacle is scheduled most nights with up to two shows per night depending on theme park operating hours and other special ticketed events.

As many as 500 images shot that day will project onto the castle each night the show is presented, producers estimate.  Disney PhotoPass photographers will capture guests creating new memories as they “smile for the castle.”

“Disney parks create family vacation memories to last a lifetime,” said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort.  “What better canvas for those memories than Cinderella Castle, one of the most photographed icons in the world.”

After the sun goes down, 16 high-powered state-of-the-art projectors will bring the castle to life as that day’s photos (and videos taken from Disney’s “Let the Memories Begin” online hub) seem to dance about the famous facade, explained Alan Bruun, associate creative director, Walt Disney World Entertainment.

As classic Disney music weaves in and out of the new “Let the Memories Begin” theme song, turrets spin while the castle shimmers and magically transforms itself in playful and exciting ways to accompany the guests’ memories of fun, adventure and family experiences.

“The images dance to the music and culminate in a spectacular finale punctuated by animated and actual fireworks,” Bruun said.

As Disney Parks encourages families to “Let the Memories Begin,” guests have been celebrating their only-at-Disney memories by sharing their stories and by uploading photos and videos online at DisneyParks.com/memories.

Vacation memories hold a special place in the hearts of families, too, according to a recent survey of Americans and Canadians conducted by Ypartnership, a leading research firm that tracks consumer insights and trends in travel.

Nine out of 10 parents polled said they plan their vacations with the express hope of creating a lasting family memory.  And most memories don’t fade with the passage of time.  Nearly three-quarters of those surveyed said they think back “often” or “very often” on their most cherished vacation memories.

BY THE NUMBERS: ‘The Magic, The Memories, and You!’ Nighttime Spectacle

  • Length of each show: ten minutes (approx.)

Disney Cruise Line Welcomes Newest Ship During Christening Celebration Filled with ‘Dreams’

Disney Cruise Line Welcomes Newest Ship During Christening Celebration Filled with ‘Dreams’

With a dash of Disney magic and a surprising twist, a helicopter hoisted a 16-foot “champagne bottle” across the bow of the Disney Dream during a christening ceremony this morning officially welcoming the newest ship to the Disney Cruise Line family.

Serving the traditional role of godmother for the Disney Dream christening was Jennifer Hudson, the Academy Award and Grammy Award winner whose own dreams of stardom began when she was a performer on the Disney Wonder ship in 2003.

Hudson was joined onstage by Disney CEO Bob Iger and Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs, as the enormous “champagne bottle” filled with dreams of adventure, romance and fun was lifted into the air and broken across the bow of the 130,000-ton ship.

Some 3,000 people were gathered at the Disney Dream for the christening ceremony including celebrities, media and members of the public.

The spectacle befit a ship brimming with innovative “wows” – including gallery art that comes alive, the first water coaster aboard a cruise ship, Magical Portholes that provide inside staterooms with a real-time ocean view, a full-blown shipboard fireworks show, personal interaction with animated characters, play floors like gigantic video games, and original Broadway-style stage spectaculars.

“For over a decade, Disney Cruise Line has been making vacation dreams come true for millions of families and we continue that tradition today with the launch of the Disney Dream,” Iger said. “The mix of imagination and innovation found on the Disney Dream is unparalleled and elevates the family cruise experience to new heights.”

The 4,000-passenger Disney Dream sails its maiden voyage out of Port Canaveral, Fla., on Jan. 26. It joins the 2,700-passenger Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, with the Disney Fantasy scheduled to join the fleet in 2012.

“The addition of the Disney Dream provides an opportunity to extend our horizons and open up Disney cruising to more families,” Staggs said.  “From the majestic beauty of Alaska, to the culture and history of Europe, to the fun and sun of the Caribbean, families looking to take a Disney cruise have more options than ever before.”

In 2011, the Disney Dream will sail three-, four- and five-night itineraries to the Bahamas and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. The Disney Magic will sail seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries and seven-, 10- and 11-night European cruises out of Barcelona during the summer months. The Disney Wonder will sail seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises from the Port of Los Angeles beginning Jan. 23 and seven-night Alaska itineraries from Vancouver, B.C., during the summer months.

Disneyworld Fantasyland Expansion Full Details and Video

The largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history is underway, a project that will nearly double the size of Fantasyland and deliver a new home for Ariel, new ways to interact with favorite Disney princesses, an exciting new family coaster, a double dose of Dumbo and more.

Scheduled to open in phases beginning in late 2012, the new Fantasyland will immerse guests in Disney stories as never before. Among the highlights planned:

  • Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid, a major, all-new attraction during which guests will travel with Ariel and her friends through their exciting adventures above and below the waves – all against a musical backdrop of songs from the classic film.
  • The castle of the Beast, standing majestically upon a hill just across an old stone bridge from Ariel’s new home. The Be Our Guest Restaurant will feature a lavish dining experience in the elegant ballroom, gallery, and mysterious “West Wing” of the castle. With seating for 550, this magnificent facility will offer “great food fast” service by day and full table service dining in the evening. Nearby in Belle‘s Village, guests will find the rousing Gaston’s Tavern and Bonjour! Village Gifts.
  • Just outside the village is Belle’s cottage and Enchanted Tales with Belle. The adventure begins in Maurice’s workshop, where a magical mirror is the doorway to a captivating new kind of storytelling experience: Guests are transported to the Beast’s library to meet Belle and Lumiere, and share in a lively, interactive, re-telling of the “tale as old as time.”
But that’s just the beginning of what guests will discover when the multi-phase project is completed. Here’s more of what’s in store:
  • The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train will take guests on a rollicking, musical ride into the mine “where a million diamonds shine.” The coaster will feature a first-of-its kind ride system with a train of ride vehicles that swing back and forth, responding to every twist and turn of the track. The journey will be accompanied by music from the classic Disney film and animated figures of Snow White and the Dwarfs.
  • In Princess Fairytale Hall, Aurora, Cinderella and other Disney princesses, such as Tiana and Rapunzel, will greet guests in their new home, an elegant royal court on the site where Snow White’s Scary Adventures stands today.
  • The sound of the calliope will lead guests to the brand new Storybook Circus and not one but two circling carousels of airborne pachyderms on Dumbo the Flying Elephant. Before taking to the skies on this Fantasyland favorite, guests can experience an array of fun-filled family games and interactive wonders for kids of all ages inside the Big Top.
  • Next door in Storybook Circus, the classic Barnstormer gets a bright new look as well, featuring Goofy as The Great Goofini. It’s a twisting, turning roller coaster “flight” high above the circus fun.
