Disneyland Annual Passes Get a Makeover

Disneyland Annual Passes Get a Makeover

Starting April 6, Disneyland annual passes will no longer have a photo of the passholder. It only took me a few years to get a good picture of myself on there, and now it’s changing.

New and existing passholders renewing  their pass will have their new pass printed directly at the ticket booths, or will receive it in the mail if they ordered the pass online. The current process involved a temporary voucher printed from the ticket booth (or home) used to enter the park. Then the guest must go to Plaza Pavilion or the pass processing center inside California Adventure to have their photo taken and their plastic pass printed.

The new passes don’t quite eliminate the necessity for the passholder’s photo. A photo will still be needed for identification at the main entrance gates, therefore many people will still be sent to the annual pass processing centers to take their photo. There have also been passholders trying out a new system where they upload their own photo for their pass from home. Another option is to seek help from the Photo Pass cast members.

Why the change? Plaza Pavilion has plans to become a bakery, and inside California Adventure, the annual pass processing center will be closed for remodeling with the new Buena Vista Street re-theme project.

Classic Disney: Plaza Swan Boats Ride

Classic Disney: Plaza Swan Boats Ride

Do you remember these classic Swan Boat Rides at Walt Disney World?

Here are the details of this Classic Disney ride from our friends at Yesterland:

The Plaza Swan Boats operated seasonally between May 1973 and August 1983. The leisurely ride on the Plaza Swan Boats included a loop around the Swiss Family Treehouse. Because each boat required a cast member, it was an expensive ride to operate. Although the ride has been gone for a quarter century, the loading dock and the canals still grace the Hub at the Magic Kingdom.

Here is some old footage I found.

Slurpee High Season Thunders into 7-Eleven with Marvel Studios’ Thor Movie Promotion

Slurpee High Season Thunders into 7-Eleven with Marvel Studios' Thor Movie PromotionInstead of Super Heroes®, maybe they should be called Slurpee® heroes. When the first Super Hero® movie of the year hits the big screen, you can be sure a 7-Eleven® fun-filled Slurpee promotion, with collectible cups, straws and a crazy-colored flavor, isn’t far behind … or in many cases, out in front of the U.S. premiere.

This year, Slurpee heroes, inspired by Thor, a movie from Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures due to hit theaters May 6, 2011, is thundering into participating 7-Eleven stores in the U.S. and Canada for the month of April.

The newest Marvel Studios movie tells the epic story of Thor, which spans across the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Produced by Kevin Feige, directed by Kenneth Branagh, from a screenplay by Ashley Edward Miller, Zack Stentz and Don Payne and a story by J. Michael Straczynski and Mark Protosevich, the production is the first full-length feature film about the Norse god of thunder and long-time Marvel comic book Super Hero known for the power he wields with his hammer. The movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston and Jaimie Alexander with a cameo appearance by a 7-Eleven store, also featured in the trailer promoting the film.

In addition to the in-store promotion, special cups and straws, 7-Eleven has added an interactive social aspect with its recently launched Slurpee smart phone app.  During the month of April, the app will be re-imaged with a Thor overlay, and visitors will be invited to check in via Foursquare at 7-Eleven stores around the country.  With every check-in, Slurpee fans will accumulate prizes and Slurpee Rewards points redeemable by phone or at www.slurpee.com.

Prizes include Thor mobile phone backgrounds, a Thor badge that shows up on the app with check-in, a one-month subscription to Marvel’s digital comics and a 30-minute session with Slurpee secretary, 7-Eleven’s online concierge service that provides services ranging from answering trivia questions to reporting on sports scores to helping with homework.

Thor fans also can use their Slurpee rewards points to view a three-minute, behind-the-scenes video on the making of the movie, produced by Marvel. The documentary short is available exclusively to 7-Eleven’s Slurpee Rewards participants (www.slurpee.com) April 1-15, after which Marvel will release the piece publicly.

7-Eleven has created 10 different collectible cups for its Slurpee and Big Gulp® beverages, including two limited-edition molded plastic mugs featuring Thor and the Destroyer, one of the villains in the movie.  Among the eight collectible cups are featured Thor’s nemesis and step-brother Loki, and Sif, a goddess who carries a big sword … and a torch for Thor.

Aptly-named Blue Lightning Blast, the bright, turquoise blue Slurpee flavor is described as a thunderous blend of raspberry and tangerine flavors made by Dr Pepper.

Character spoon-straws have been growing in popularity since 7-Eleven introduced them four years ago.  For April, exclusive spoon-straws feature the same four movie characters as the cups – Thor, Destroyer, Loki and Sif – in action-figure form for a suggested retail price of $1.99 each.

“There’s a reason for the particular success of Super Heroes at 7-Eleven,” said Rita Bargerhuff, 7-Eleven, Inc. vice president and chief marketing officer.  “Our customers are both enthusiastic supporters of action-hero movies and Slurpee-lovers.  They relish a first peek at movies and enjoy supporting products that resonate with them.  These fans appreciate the chance to engage in ways that are meaningful and fun and that also build anticipation for a movie’s release.”

Thor marks the eighth time in as many years that 7-Eleven has partnered with Marvel on a movie featuring one of their larger-than-life Super Heroes.  Even as far back as 1975 and 1977, 7-Eleven offered Slurpee cups with Marvel Super Heroes, many of which still show up on eBay and collector’s sites.

As part of 7-Eleven’s first major promotion of the year, the company created a 60-second radio spot for select U.S. markets and online advertising calling on customers to become the “Thor of Your Store.”

Assisting 7-Eleven in developing the partnership and promotion for the Thor program is FreshWorks, 7-Eleven, Inc.’s advertising and marketing agency, which is a consortium of Omnicom companies.

As the April 22 opening of the awe-inspiring “African Cats” approaches, Disneynature is tapping into the true power of social media by building awareness of its “See ‘African Cats,’ Save the Savanna” program. During the film’s opening week (April 22-28), a portion of the proceeds from that week’s ticket sales will be donated to AWF through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to protect the Amboseli Wildlife Corridor, a passage between the Amboseli, Tsavo West and Chyulu Hills National Parks that is frequently used by lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, giraffes and a host of other animals in the African savanna.

A host of compelling and unique social initiatives allows participants to make a difference, giving them the power to pledge their intent to see the film, support the cause and spread the word to others.

Fans pledge to see “African Cats” opening week by logging onto http://eventful.com/africancats. Participants can watch how honoring that pledge can effectively save the savanna.  A real-time counter will show how many people have participated, and there will also be a graphical map representing the number of acres across the savanna that are being conserved based upon the number of pledges received. Upon arriving at the theater, fans can check in via their mobile device to win special prizes.

Join the “African Cats” grassroots community and donate to the African Wildlife Foundation on Causes:

Fans can join the “African Cats” grassroots community on Causes by signing the pledge to help Africa’s lions and other imperiled wildlife survive and thrive for generations to come.  Additionally, users are given the opportunity to enhance Disneynature’s commitment by donating directly to the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) via the platform.

Buy tickets through Disney Tickets Together, invite friends and Disneynature will double its donation:

Disney Tickets Together, Facebook’s first social ticketing application, allows fans to engage with the film by inviting friends to see “African Cats” and purchase tickets for local theaters without ever leaving Facebook. For all “African Cats” events created in Tickets Together, Disney will increase the donation to the Save the Savanna fund for every “Yes” RSVP that the events receive. The application launches during the week of April 18.

“African Cats,” which will be released in theaters worldwide, opens in North America on April 22, 2011.  Tickets for groups of 20 or more are available in the United States by calling 1-888-DISNEY6.

Disney Cruise Line and Free Dining Rumors!

Disney Cruise Line and Free Dining Rumors!

Mark your calendars!  Disney has just given travel agents a heads up that Disney Cruise Lines will be making a big announcement on Wednesday, April 6, at 1 p.m. EDT.  Expect to hear details about pricing and the Disney Fantasy, Disney’s newest ship set to launch next spring.

Now, here’s were the rumors and speculation come in. In the email that Disney sent out to travel agents, they also told us to come back on Friday morning for more big news. We’re hearing from insiders that cast members at the call center are being offered overtime that day.  Could it mean the return of free dining for fall?  Since hold times often average 2 – 3 hours on the days that free dining is announced, Disney typically offers overtime on those days as opposed to days when a simple room-only discount is offered.  So it’s definitely looking good.

Stay tuned and as always, if you want to book early and avoid the rush, please contact Pixie Vacations at 678-815-1584 or visit us online at www.PixieVacations.com.  We’ll apply discounts as they are released to your existing reservation, saving you money and time.  And as always, Disney travel agents do not charge you for their services.

Chris writes here and at Everything Disney World. She’s also a member of the Mouse Chat podcast and a travel agent at Pixie Vacations.  Email her at [email protected] for information on a free $50 Disney gift card offer she’s offering for new bookings.

Where is your favorite place to get your grub on? The Wave
What’s your favorite snack? Soft Pretzel
You have the whole park to yourself tell us what park it would be and plan of attack? This question doesn’t tell me how long I have in the parks… Let’s assume I have a week! I would spend day one in each park from open to close and ride everything several times over. After that  a few days in the resorts and their lovely restaurants.  I would spend a night in each of the Deluxe resorts in the most expensive rooms. I think that’s it.
Least Favorite Disney Ride or Attractions? Tower of Terror only cause I am scared of it!
What’s missing from the Parks?
Kid free zones like there are on the cruises.
Which thing do you wish Disney would bring back?
Pleasure Island.

I LOVE the dining plan but I have done the most recent trips OOP.
To ADR or Not to ADR? ADR but be flexible and don’t be afraid to show up at the last minute and ask if there is an opening.
Events at the park that cost extra good idea or should be included with park admission? I think they’re should be a way to include them in the park tickets. Like Magic and More should really mean “MORE”! So if you buy regular tickets then no extra events but Magic and More means you can get into any special event you want.
When is your next trip to WDW or DL? May 9 2011 (My Birthday!)

Everything Else Disney:
What is your favorite Disney Movie? A tie between Beauty and the Beast and A Goofy Movie
Do you do any Disney Collections? A small vinylmation and Disney trinkets (snow globes, music box, wallets, paintings, etc.) collection.
Have you been on a Disney Cruise or Adventures by Disney? I just went on a cruise in February on the Dream.  If you haven’t gone on a cruise find an excuse to go!
Ever been to DLRP or TDL? Nope but it is a dream!

Finally what does Disney Mean to you? Disney means the world to me. All puns intended. Disney is my past, present and future. Disney is fun and friends and happiness. It is the freedom to feel like a kid and escape reality even if just for a little while. Disney is my past because it has been a part of my life since before I could talk. In a way Disney is my childhood and my childhood fantasies brought to life. It is a part of who I am. I don’t need an inner child. I can be a forever child at Disney. I guess that’s a silly way to put it but I mean it. Disney is my present because I keep meeting new people and making some of the best friends I’ve ever had because of our connections to Disney. Disney is also the reason I started my blog and remembered why I love writing so much. Disney is also my dream for the future. I wanted to write films and am getting my MFA in screenwriting because I was inspired by Disney movies. I’m hoping that once I get my degree I can write for Disney or be an imagineer that helps design the stories behind Disney attractions. Funny… I’ve never said that aloud before.
