Two members of the creative team behind some of the most successful animated films by Disney Pixar will speak to Inspiration Behind the Design at the 17th AutoWeek Design Forum.

Brad Lewis and Jay Shuster anchor a day of design insight and inspiration and will talk about their work on CARS 2, due in theaters in summer 2011.

CARS proved not only to be a design tour de force, but it became a cultural icon, an instant classic,” said Dutch Mandel, AutoWeek associate publisher and editorial director. “CARS 2 will take the franchise to the next level, and we have two of the creative geniuses behind it.”

Lewis joined Pixar Animation Studios in November 2001, bringing with him 20 years of film, theater, television and advertising production expertise. Lewis was the producer of Disney Pixar’s Academy Award®-winning film Ratatouille and is currently directing CARS 2, scheduled for a June 24, 2011, release.

Shuster arrived at Pixar in 2002 as a sketch artist, contributing character and environment designs to John Lasseter’s 2006 film CARS and to Andrew Stanton’s WALL-E in 2008. Shuster is currently art-directing Disney Pixar’s sequel to CARS.

The AW Design Forum is a chance for enthusiasts, students and designers to learn about the latest design trends and to network within their field of interest. The event also allows attendees to visit the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) before the general public. The forum will be held on Jan. 13, 2011, at the College for Creative Studies A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education in Detroit, Mich., from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Rounding out the list of speakers is:

  • Michael Warsaw, Vice President, Industrial Design & Marketing, Johnson Controls
  • Philip Lunn, Chairman, PixelMags; CEO, Bunkspeed
  • Frank Stephenson, Design Director, McLaren

As with all AW Design Forums, the Inspiration Behind the Design topic will celebrate design as the ultimate differentiating factor among products, the catalyst of passion and the primary force that drives consumers’ interest and purchase decisions. The event features a continental breakfast, individual morning presentations, design exhibits, networking opportunities, a strolling lunch and afternoon tours of the North American International Auto Show.

The AutoWeek Editors’ Choice Awards, presented during the Design Forum, will recognize the 2011 NAIAS Best in Show, Most Fun, Most Significant and Best Concept vehicles.

Advance registration for the half-day program is $150, all-inclusive. The deadline for online registration is Monday, Jan. 4, 2011. Limited on-site registration will be available during the Design Forum at $200 per person.

The event is sponsored by Johnson Controls, Microsoft and the College for Creative Studies, in association with the NAIAS.

Join Celebrity Golfers Competing in PGA TOUR Children’s Miracle Network Classic

Three-time PGA TOUR winner and Orlando resident Chris DiMarco and Golf Channel’s Big Break Disney Golf winner Mike Perez received sponsor’s exemptions for the 40th Children’s Miracle Network Classic Nov. 11-14 at Walt Disney World Resort, where they will compete alongside a host of celebrity pro-am golfers, such as Julius “Dr. J’’ Erving and Ken Griffey, Jr.

DiMarco, who won the 2000 SEI Pennsylvania Classic, the 2001 Buick Challenge and the 2002 Phoenix Open, has competed on the U.S. Ryder Cup team (2004 and 2006) and the Presidents Cup (2003 and 2005). He has earned $400,040 on the tour this year and $21,235,123 for his career, as well as 61 career Top 10 finishes.

DiMarco has played at Disney 13 times in his career beginning in 1994, with his best result a runner-up finish to Bob Burns in 2002. Last year, he tied for 15th place.

Perez earned his sponsor’s exemption after winning the Golf Channel’s Big Break Disney Golf earlier this year at the Palm and Magnolia courses at Disney. In the Disney Classic, Perez will compete against his brother, Pat Perez, ranked 103rdon the money list.

“The DiMarco family has long been a part of the Disney Classic, dating back to Chris’s father, Rich, who played in the Pro-Am, and continues to this day with Chris and his kids participating in the traditional father-child event here at Disney,” said tournament chairman Kevin Weickel. “Mike Perez obviously knows our course well after winning Big Break Disney Golf, and we look forward to seeing his dream come true of playing in a PGA TOUR event here at Disney.”

With DiMarco and Perez in the field, the Children’s Miracle Network Classic has two remaining sponsor’s exemptions to extend to players who otherwise wouldn’t qualify for the field of 128 players that will tee off in the PGA TOUR Fall Series finale. The final two spots will be announced in the next couple weeks.

The two-day pro-am field, which will compete the Thursday and Friday of tournament week, is also nearly filled, headlined by Erving, Griffey, White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski, San Francisco Giants outfielder Aaron Rowand and Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Pena and pitcher James Shields.

Defending champion Stephen Ames, who also won the tournament in 2007, is among an impressive group of former winners, which includes Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Jack Nicklaus, Payne Stewart and Raymond Floyd. Celebrating its 40th year, the event was initially held as the Walt Disney World Open Invitational shortly after the resort opened in 1971. This year’s tournament will again be televised live each day on the Golf Channel.

Once again, guests also will have the opportunity to experience the Wine & Dine Walk, throughout the back nine of Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course. Patterned after the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, five specialty locations will offer culinary pairings of tapas-sized appetizers, entrees, desserts and wines especially for the event.

Tickets for individual rounds ($10), badges for Classic week ($20) and a new one-day Wine & Dine ticket ($45) are available at www.ChildrensMiracleNetworkClassic.com or through www.ticketmaster.com. The new Wine & Dine ticket is good for five entrees, one at each location, and one beverage, along the back nine of the Magnolia Golf Course. Net proceeds go to Children’s Miracle Network hospitals, including the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies in Orlando, and Shands Children’s Hospital in Gainesville.

Disney hotel rooms to join Priceline

Disney hotel rooms to join Priceline

Interesting news from Jason Garcia at the Daily Disney.

Walt Disney World is poised to sell hotel rooms on Priceline.com, after years of keeping its hotels off the popular site for bargain hunters.

Disney hotel rooms will become a part of Priceline‘s inventory in mid-November, though the rooms will be available only through the site’s conventional booking engine — not its “Name Your Own Price” service.

“We are not participating in Priceline.com’s ‘Name Your Own’ service and have no plans to do so,” Disney spokeswoman Andrea Finger said.

Still, it is a strategic shift for Disney, which has for years refused to list rooms on Priceline, even as it did so on other online-travel sites. Disney hotel rooms have been available on Expedia and Travelocity, for instance, since 2002.

Introducing The Vintage Disney Collection from New Era

Introducing The Vintage Disney Collection from New Era

The New Era “Vintage Disney 59FIFTY Cap Collection” features a quintet of caps inspired by Disney’s timeless animated short films of the 1930s. Never before have the classic images of Mickey Mouse and friends been given this kind of high end headwear treatment. Using scenes from a handful of unforgettable stories – “The Mad Doctor,” “Lonesome Ghosts,” “Mickey’s Rival” and “Thru The Mirror” – these five caps spark memories and complete outfits, perfect for collectors and fashion enthusiasts alike. (see below for pictures)

The caps are available at www.neweracap.com for $34.99 – $37.99 SRP.

  • “Thru the Mirror” – $34.99 SRP
    • Inspired by the classic 1936 short film of the same name, which was itself inspired by the Lewis Carroll story “Through the Looking-Glass,” the Thru the Mirror cap features Mickey Mouse on the run, with the minions of the Queen of Hearts hot on his tail. The undervisor features another moment from the film, in which Mickey is taken by surprise when he sees his distorted image in the mirror. ($34.99 SRP)
  • “The Mad Doctor” – $34.99 SRP
    • Released on January 21, 1933, The Mad Doctor short features Pluto, Mickey’s best friend, along with evil scientist Doctor XXX. Mickey dreams that Pluto has been captured by an evil scientist who hopes to graft his head onto a hen’s body. This cap depicts the frightening images of the scientist’s castle and a terrified Mickey unsuccessfully trying to avoid capture. ($34.99 SRP)
  • “The Mad Doctor” – $34.99 SRP
    • The second cap from The Mad Doctor short reveals images of Doctor XXX at work. Featuring equations, as well as a very unhappy Pluto and Mickey trying to save the hound from the villain’s castle, the illustrations immerse you right into Mickey’s dream.
  • “Lonesome Ghosts” – $35.99 SRP
    • The holiday classic Lonesome Ghosts was released on December 24, 1937. This ghostly tale finds Mickey, Donald and Goofy running a ghost-exterminating agency when they receive a call from four lonely, green phantoms. The mischievous ghosts invite these fun-loving ghost busters over to their haunted home with the aim of driving them crazy. But things don’t go as planned when Mickey and the gang finally chase out the ghosts, as shown by their satisfied expressions on the undervisor.
  • “Mickey’s Rival” – $37.99 SRP
    • Mickey’s Rival debuted on June 20, 1936, featuring Mortimer, the drugstore cowboy, and Mickey coming head to head (as shown on the cap’s front) in this animated love story. Minnie’s heart is the prize here in a feud between Mickey and his newfound rival. As shown on the undervisor, Mortimer invades Mickey’s and Minnie’s picnic, wooing a very receptive Minnie and angering poor Mickey. But when a ferocious bull charges their way, Mortimer runs, and Mickey comes to the rescue and saves Minnie.

Ocean Spray and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Announce a Multi-Year Alliance

Ocean Spray and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Announce a Multi-Year Alliance

Ocean Spray announced last week a partnership with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts that will bring the Ocean Spray cranberry to a number of retail points at Disney parks, including a new presence at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif., Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla., and Disney Cruise Line.

Disney will now offer Craisins® Dried Cranberries at various retail locations, including theme parks, cruise ships, meeting rooms and hotels. The product will also be highlighted in new signature salads and Cranberry muffins and sold in fruit cart stands and kiosks inside the theme parks. The companies are also joining together to launch a special, co-branded version of Craisins® packaging featuring Chip ‘n Dale that will be used on Ocean Spray products sold on Disney properties.

“Ocean Spray is proud to form one of the largest partnerships of its kind in our history, with such a world-class organization as Disney that shares our wholesome, good-for-you focus,” said Randy Papadellis, CEO of Ocean Spray. “We look forward to working with Disney, and we’re pleased that Disney guests will now be able to enjoy the cranberry’s great taste and health benefits and also learn about its unique American heritage.”

As a part of Ocean Spray’s ongoing commitment to educate consumers about the taste, health and heritage of the cranberry, the company will build cranberry bog displays during Disney’s California Food & Wine Festival, held April 29 to June 12, 2011, and the Epcot® International Food & Wine Festival in fall 2011. Third-, fourth- and fifth-generation cranberry growers will travel with 2,000 pounds of fresh cranberries from rural areas around the country to share their passion and personal farming histories while recreating the wonders of the harvest for families visiting the parks.

The events will provide the backdrop to showcase the versatility of the cranberry, and the Epcot® International Food & Wine Festival and will be part of Ocean Spray’s Fifth Annual Ultimate Cranberry Recipe Contest for executive chefs.

“Ocean Spray shares our company’s commitment to providing guests who visit our theme parks with high-quality, well-balanced snack options,” said George Aguel, senior vice president, Alliances and Operating Participants, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “This agreement will provide Ocean Spray with opportunities to share its story with millions of guests from around the world in a memorable way and provide our guests with additional healthy options.”

The inclusion of Ocean Spray products adds to Disney’s existing portfolio of nutritious snack items as well as its ongoing effort to promote healthy lifestyles and nutrition for kids and families. Ocean Spray Craisins® Dried Cranberries are made from real fruit, are naturally fat-free, cholesterol-free and a good source of fiber. Just 1/3 cup of Craisins® provides one full serving of fruit.

The announcement comes after Disney first pioneered groundbreaking nutritional guidelines in 2006 aimed at giving parents and children healthier eating options. Today, more than 85 percent of Disney’s licensed food portfolio consists of healthier options, including produce and low-fat dairy with more than one billion servings of fruits, vegetables and dairy sold in 2009 alone.
