What is Disney’s Keys to the Kingdom Tour?

What is Disney's Keys to the Kingdom Tour?

Disney’s Keys to the Kingdom tour is one of the tour opportunities offered at the Magic Kingdom park. It provides the tour guests with interesting and unknown Disney facts, such as the stories behind the creation of Magic Kingdom park and many stories about the vision, creativity and innovative ideas of Walt Disney. I think this tour is awesome for anyone who loves Disney but doesn’t want to know too much for fear of ruining the magic.

The Keys to the Kingdom tour is a 4.5 hour walking tour.   It is wheelchair accessible and there is also equipment provided for any guests with hearing disabilities. A guest must be at least 16 to experience this tour and Magic Kingdom theme park admission is required but not included in the price of the tour.

Guests will be asked to check in 15 minutes prior to their chosen tour time. Upon arrival, each guest is greeted by a friendly cast member in Guest Services and given a special guest tour pass as well as a cast member pin. Since lunch is provided on the tour, the cast member will show each tour guest a selection of menu choices for Columbia Harbour House in order for the guest to choose his or her lunch selections. Coffee and bottled waters are also offered at check in.

When it is time for the tour to begin, the group will be greeted by a friendly, knowledgeable and generally funny tour guide. He or she will talk a little about themselves and then ask each person in the group to introduce themselves to the rest of the group. You will be with the same people for the entire 4.5 hours so it is a great time to make new Disney friends – and you can never have too many of those.

Guests get to go behind the scenes at the Magic Kingdom, including the famous utilidors – the first level of the Magic Kingdom, long thought to be a tunnel. Guests also receive inside information and special rides on a couple of Disney’s best, such as the Jungle Cruise and Haunted Mansion.

Because the Keys to the Kingdom Tour is an outdoor walking tour, be sure to check the weather report and dress appropriately; especially with comfortable shoes. The cost of the tour is $74.00 per person for guests 16 and up. To schedule this tour, just call (407) WDW-TOUR or (407) 939-8687. Also, remember that if you have a Disney Rewards Visa Card, you get a 20% discount on the cost of the tour.

I hope you will book a tour for your next trip. It is well worth the money in my opinion. A great experience with some special surprises along the way.

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t Panic It’s Going To Be O.K.!!!

Disney World Quick Tips - Don't Panic It's Going To Be O.K.!!!

Whether you are an experienced Walt Disney World visitor or making your first visit (newbie) you have probably done a LOT of research, asked a lot of questions, queried all of your friends, read a few books, and spent an inordinate amount of time on Chip and Company. No one can fault you for that because a vacation to the #1 vacation destination in the world not only requires a lot of planning it is also very expensive. You have probably subscribed to at least one website that makes crowd predictions and that’s a good thing, that’s valuable information. If you are within 180 days of your visit you have probably even made your Advance Dining Reservations (ADR’s). That’s right, you’re done and ready to go.

Now that you have accomplished all of this and you are rightfully proud of your efforts and confident in the results you just go for it. That would be nice but from personal experience it doesn’t happen that way, you see operating hour adjustments and minor changes in crowd predictions as you get closer and closer and you begin to lose faith in your plans. When this happens you want to begin making changes, shuffling park days, and changing ADR’s. I know this because I have fallen victim to my own self doubt and made the last minute changes. Once you have started making changes the old fashioned “Domino Effect” takes over and scrambles all of your plans, not just the one or two (or three or four) changes you wanted to make but the rest of them as well.

Disney does make schedule changes but they almost always add rather than subtract (hours, parades, shows, etc.) and this has very little effect on attendance. When extra Magic Hours (EMH’s) are set, they pretty much stay static. That’s important because with everyone staying on site eligible for EMH’s, the Cast Members have to be scheduled and that has a major effect on thousands of Cast Members. Please remember, the one thing that has the largest attendance impact from day to day are the EMH’s, that’s why they almost never change once they are established.

The entire point of everything mentioned above is to reassure you that if you have done your research and taken the time to properly plan your vacation, Disney will not make any last minute changes that will destroy your plans. The difference between crowds when a day goes from “green” to “yellow” is barely noticeable for the folks in the park. Have confidence in your efforts and don’t make yourself crazy trying to make sure everything is PERFECT – you can’t do it. Making last minute major changes could throw your vacation into chaos so please don’t. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Going Deluxe at Disney World – Is it worth it?

Going Deluxe at Disney World - Is it worth it?

Going to Disney world is a one of a kind experience and for many choosing just how they are going to mold their trip can be quite overwhelming. There are so many choices to consider when making plans; do you get a park hopper, is the dining plan right for your group, do you sign up for a special tour, or is there a reason not to add water park entry to your ticket? All of these are valid questions, but perhaps one of the most pressing questions is what category of hotel is right for you when staying on Disney property. Today I will help you sort out some of the confusion by discussing if staying at a Deluxe resort is right for you!

Disney offers three categories of on property accommodations: value, moderate, and deluxe resorts. The Deluxe resorts are the most expensive resorts on property and offer quite a few perks for the guests staying at them. Many wonder, however, if the major cost difference between the value resorts and deluxe resorts is really worth it. Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your home away from home.

The deluxe resorts offer the most visually attractive themes and will appeal to everyone in your group. The grounds are spotless! The rooms are clean and offer double sinks, roomy bathrooms in comparison to value resorts, a variety of toiletries, and balconies. I have also never been disappointed in the towel animal department, but this could be pure luck!

Deluxe resorts, which include The Grand Floridian, The Contemporary Resort, The Polynesian, The Wilderness Lodge, The Animal Kingdom Lodge, The Boardwalk Inn, The Yacht Club and The Beach Club are the most elegant and luxurious hotels on Disney property. They offer a true resort feel and add an element of relaxation to your trip. Most of these resorts offer spectacular pools, hot tubs, and spa services. You will also find poolside bars and towel services. Though there are pools at every Disney resort, if you are staying at a value resort you will not find towel service or the relaxing atmosphere of that the deluxe pools offer.

Deluxe resorts also offer proximity to at least one theme park and often offer multiple modes of transportation. From the Grand, The Contemporary, and the Polynesian you will be able to arrive to the Magic Kingdom by boat, bus, foot, or monorail. By using the monorail you are also afforded easy access to Epcot and very simple return trips to your room from these parks. This is especially valuable for those traveling with small children who may need a nap or a pool break at a moments notice. From the Boardwalk and the Yacht and Beach Clubs you will be able to access Epcot by foot or boat and access to Hollywood studios by boat. With its proximity to Epcot this means the Magic Kingdom is only a quick trip on the monorail! The Wilderness Lodge offers boat service to the Magic Kingdom. The only Deluxe that does not offer particularly stellar transport is the Animal Kingdom Lodge. This is due to the size and location of the resort. Because there are many living animals who reside at the lodge, transportation is limited to bus service only and can be a bit on the slow side.

Deluxe resorts offer spectacular food service locations and many of these resorts offer at least one quick service location, one table service location, and one signature dining experience. The Contemporary offers some of the best dining on property with the California Grill. The views of the Magic Kingdom are unbelievable here! With a variety of choices for dining right at your finger tips, you will be assured that you are never limited to just pizza alone!

Another great advantage to staying at a deluxe is the service. You will feel like royalty in the hands of the wonderful cast members. Though it is Disney policy that all cast members are willing, helpful, and just plain amazing, I have never encountered a single one who did not go above and beyond the call of duty at any deluxe resort.

There are also quite a few extras that the deluxe resorts offer such as health clubs, child care locations, equipment rentals such as bikes and boats, in room refrigerators, and amazing gift shops. As a guest of a deluxe resort you will certainly enjoy the best of everything.

Now that you are armed with some valuable information about the deluxe resorts it is time to make a decision. There are some factors to take into consideration. Cost is of course the number one factor. A deluxe can cost you three or four times as much as a value and often the prices of a deluxe soar well over the two hundred dollar a night mark. If you really want to stretch your vacation dollar a deluxe simply may not work for your group. You could always consider a split stay if you want to sample a deluxe. I suggest starting your trip at a value resort and ending at a deluxe. It is very easy to move up the ladder, but moving down may be a bit of a disappointment.

Another factor to consider is your touring style. Does your group start out the day at the parks and stay there until well past sun down? If so a deluxe may not be a necessary expense for you as you are only there to use a bed and a bathroom. If your touring style is more in line with mine then you are the type of person who sets out to the parks for only a few hours at a time and comes back to the resort to read, relax, and soak up the sun. If your Disney vacation needs to have some elements of a relaxing get away then a deluxe may be a better choice than a value or a moderate.

There are so many resorts to choose from on Disney property and there are great things about every category. I am a fan of the deluxe resorts as they fit my relaxed touring style and I budget for the expense involved in staying at one. Sit down with your family and decide what your vacation is going to be like before choosing a hotel. As always, no matter where you stay you are still at Disney World and will have an amazing vacation!

Final Family Fun Weekend Recap: Mardi Gras

Final Family Fun Weekend Recap: Mardi Gras

The final installment of Disneyland’s Family Fun Weekends took place on the weekends of [dates]. Rather than being in the Festival Arena like the previous FFW’s, it was in New Orleans Square, just as Mardi Gras should be celebrated.

Characters came out and interacted with the park guests, NOS’s jazz band performed throughout the day, and Princess Tiana and her crew from “The Princess and the Frog” performed for the crowds.

Below are my photos from the weekend(s). I guess I was there at all the wrong times, since I didn’t really see the characters! I did see lots of Pluto, though, who spent lots of time with the kids. And a duck that thought it deserved to be part of the show.

Disney Confidential - Snow White Live Action Film gets leading lady

Hey there guys and gals your friendly neighborhood gossip columnist Anonymouse here! Serving up the best in Disney News and Gossip for this week.

While drinking my morning coffee and pondering on what to write for this weeks article this interesting piece of news landed in my inbox. While the first thing that came to mind is Phil Collins has a daughter??? Said daughter has been chosen to play the lead in the Disney Live Action Remake of Snow White.

Here are the details:

Lily Collins, the daughter of rock star Phil Collins, has landed her biggest Hollywood role  in a live action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

She is to play the fairy tale princess in a 3D version of the classic Disney cartoon alongside Julia Roberts playing the Evil Queen.

Lily, 22, is best known for appearing in the Oscar winning film The Blind Side where she played Sandra Bullock‘s daughter.

Good for her. I hope she gets a big break like the girl who took over the lead role in the live action remake of Alice in Wonderland. What was her name again???

Well that is all the time I have for this week. Everyone have a Disney Day!

Got any good rumors?  Please email me at [email protected] on my Facebook Page.

Oldies But Goodies – Do You Plan By Park Or By ADR?

Oldies But Goodies - Do You Plan By Park Or By ADR?

I can honestly say that I have probably explored nearly every conceivable way of planning a Walt Disney World visit from just winging it (ARRGH!!!) to planning every single detail from the first minute to the last. When you start to consider things like how many minutes it takes to walk from this attraction to that attraction, you are probably over planning. Over the years it has become apparent that us older folks plan in primarily two ways – by the park or by the Advance Dining Reservation (ADR). We love our table service restaurants and enjoy taking the time to enjoy a relaxing meal as a break from an otherwise hectic day.

When you make your choice how to plan you have to weigh the pluses and minuses of each method. If you base your touring strictly on the ADR’s you simply must have, you run the risk of enjoying your meals in an extremely crowded park and not enjoying the rest of your day. If you base your touring only on the park crowd estimates of so many of the good websites you will likely have a great day touring but possibly miss out on that special dining experience because of availability on that day. It’s important that you make your decisions based on what is most important to you.

There are a few things you can do to maximize your quest for the dining experience and a great day of touring all in the same day. Here are some things you can try:

  • Find a website you can trust to give you accurate crowd predictions for each day of your visit before the ADR window arrives (Touring Plans, Easy WDW, etc.).
  • Be ready to make those ADR’s 180 days before your check in date.
  • Make your ADR’s for the most popular restaurants towards the end of your visit! Reason – when you are reserving for a 10 day window you will be competing with fewer people because everyone that arrives after your check in date will not be eligible to make ADR’s until after yours are finished.
  • Make those essential ADR’s first based on the crowd charts rather than just going from the first day to the last day, just a few moments can make a huge difference in availability.
  • You might want to consider dining at a resort near the park you are touring because many of Walt Disney World’s finest establishments are in those resorts rather than the parks and they are almost always considerably less busy than the park restaurants. The Magic Kingdom area and Boardwalk/Epcot area are particularly good for this option.
  • Remember – compromise is not always a bad thing. You might just have to miss a favorite reservation to have a sane vacation or you might have to be willing to deal with a few more people to dine at your favorite restaurant. Whatever works for you is best for you.

There is really no right way to do it that fits everyone. Whatever makes you happy and meets your needs is the right thing to do. You are on vacation to relax and enjoy the number one vacation destination in the world and all it has to offer so do it your way. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Church Services at Walt Disney World – Is There Such a Thing?

Morocco Pavilion, Epcot
I remember a time when Catholic Mass was offered at the Polynesian Resort’s Luau Cove. Unfortunately, that is not the case anymore. Today, religious services are only offered on Walt Disney World property on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. These services are typically offered in the Fantasia Ballroom at the Contemporary Resort. The 2011 Easter services schedule hasn’t been released yet but if history is any guide two Catholic Masses will be offered, one at 8am and the other at 10:15 am. A Protestant service is available at 9am. Due to expected large crowds, parking is restricted at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Polynesian Resort, and the Contemporary Resort. Guests can either take boat or monorail transportation to the Contemporary or board a shuttle bus bringing worshippers from the Magic Kingdom to the Contemporary Resort.

For religious services throughout the year, you’ll have to visit a nearby house of worship. I contacted Disney to get a list of local resources.

Cast Members Make Magical Memories

Cast Members Make Magical Memories

This happened a while ago, but I don’t think I’ll forget it for a while. Unfortunately, the photo is a bit blurred, but then again, shiny and clear things are difficult to photograph.

Valentine’s Day was like almost any other day for my boyfriend and me — we went to Disneyland. What made this trip different from the rest was a certain cast member at the Story Book Land canal boats in Fantasyland. I wish I remembered her name. She was probably one of the sweetest cast members I have ever encountered.

She had asked if my boyfriend and I were celebrating the day by coming to Disneyland. We explained that we are annual passholders and that this is a regular visit for us. She was quick to reject our opinion that it was a normal trip for us.

She made her way to what I can only describe as a podium. She opened the little cabinet door and pulled something out of it. When she returned, she placed something in my hand. It was a “glass” slipper like Cinderella’s. (Okay, so it was plastic. Work with me here.)

I had never seen these before, even though I spend much of my free time there. After she placed it in my hand, she said, “Here, now this is different from all the other visits. Not all visits are the same — the people are always different.” She couldn’t have been more right.

Hopefully I see this cast member again sometime in the future, just so I could let her know that I still have the slipper.

John Ratzenberger: Pixar’s Lucky Charm – Part Two

John Ratzenberger: Pixar’s Lucky Charm - Part Two

As I was saying in Part One of this article, John Ratzenberger is the reason for Pixar’s success. As their lucky charm, he has brought the studio nothing but box office gold.

OK, maybe the juries still out as to whether John can claim that much credit. But let’s continue to look at his involvement with Pixar:

2006 – Cars (Mack / Supporting Lead)

“What kind of a cheap, cut-rate, operation is this?”

With the next Pixar offering being directed by John Lasseter himself, it should be no surprise that Pixar’s lucky charm got his chance, not only to return, but also to star. As Mack, Lightning McQueen’s transport, John again got to deliver one-liners and provide color when it was needed.

John Ratzenberger: Pixar’s Lucky Charm - Part Two

But it wasn’t until the DVD release of Cars that we got a humorous expose on John’s involvement in Pixar movies.

We see the Cars cast at a drive-in movie as they watch the previous Pixar offerings, but as a vehicle cast reenacts them. Each clip we see has a shot with the character that John himself plays, and after each line this character delivers, John (as Mack) comments on how great the voice actor being used is. But finally, it dawns on Mack that the same voice is used for every one of the characters he’s seen! And so he comments: “Hey, they’re just using the same guy over and over!” And then delivers the line under the main heading above.

This was too funny for words!

Pixar was admitting they had a lucky charm, and were making no apologies for it. But this didn’t keep John in the limelight of Pixar’s next three films:

2007’s Ratatouille (Waiter) followed by 2008’s Wall-E (John) relegated the actor back to Cameo status. 2009’s UP (Employee) kept him there for one more movie.

2010 – Toy Story 3 (Ham / Supporting Lead)

“Umm, I don’t think those were Lincoln Logs.”

Lee Unkrich, as the director of the third installment of this franchise, was glad to have as many of the original cast back as possible. John was a no-brainer for inclusion. We missed Bo Peep, but got over it quickly. We wouldn’t have accepted the loss of Hamm so easily!

John Ratzenberger: Pixar’s Lucky Charm - Part Two

So in my opinion, John Ratzenberger is Pixar’s lucky charm, spreading comedic pixie dust throughout each and every movie! But I may have to concede that he shouldn’t get ALL of the credit for Pixar’s success.

2011 and 201? – Cars 2 and Monsters Inc. 2 (?)

How much involvement will John have in these two pictures? Likely only limited screen time. But as always, his presence will be felt.

In conclusion, one reporter asked John why Pixar used him in every single movie that they made. He laughed, and gave this elusive answer: “You’ll have to ask them that!”

But he did say that he would answer their call for any project, any time. And isn’t that just what a lucky charm should do?
