Halloweentime: Disneyland Pumpkins!

Halloweentime: Disneyland Pumpkins!

At Big Thunder Ranch, you can see the wonderful creations the pumpkin artists at Disneyland have created! Lots of great characters! This weekend is your last chance to see them. After Sunday, they’re tossed out!

Disneyland’s pumpkin artists take pride in their creations. Be sure to tell them how great they are! These ladies are lucky they had lots of help; they didn’t create all of these pumpkins by themselves.

Disney’s Silly Bandz: Cars

Disney's Silly Bandz: Cars

After buying the Nightmare Before Christmas bands, my boyfriend spotted Cars ones inside the Star Trader shop in Tomorrowland (Disneyland). Knowing how much he likes the movie,  I caved and bought them for him.

For $6, you get a pack of about 20 bands. The shapes are Lightning McQueen, Snot Rod, Wingo, D.J. and Boost.

Yes, we put them all out on top of a Disneyland trash can to see them and take photos. Don’t judge us.

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t Carry The World On Your Shoulders

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t Carry The World On Your Shoulders

I learned a lesson in 2009, unless you normally carry a backpack in your day to day life don’t make Walt Disney World your first shot at carrying one all day. It actually gets painful later in the day when you carry that extra weight on your shoulders.

In a family group traveling to Walt Disney World there always seems to be one person selected to be the “pack mule”. If this person is normally a back pack person that’s fine but that isn’t the case in most instances. Here are a few of the things we do to spare the “pack mule”.

  1. Be a minimalist and carry only what you might actually need during the day.
  2. Try to find lighter weight versions of what you would normally carry. Example – if you you use a monopod to steady your camera try a plastic “shooting stick” that gun fanciers use to steady rifles when target shooting. They are available at Wal~Mart for around $10 and the gun rest comes off revealing a camera screw mount. They actually work better because they are strong, lightweight, and taller than a standard monopod.
  3. Don’t carry a bunch of bottles of water. There are plenty of water fountains available and if you don’t like the taste of Florida water take some Crystal Light On The Go packets. Have one water bottle for each person that they can refill (and also they can carry).
  4. Be generous, share the load. Allow other family members the opportunity to carry a portion of the supplies. Remember, most younger family members carry a back pack to school every day. It’s like a body part for them.
  5. If you still have issues with soreness revert to a fanny pack. They aren’t super stylish but they put the load on your hips rather than your shoulders.

There are probably dozens of other things you can do but I just wanted to get you thinking about it so you wouldn’t have to put up with the sore shoulders that I suffered in 2009. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Top Eats 5 Disneyworld Casual Dining Restaurants

Casual Dining makes up most of our Dining Options when we visit Walt Disney World as a family. We enjoy a good sit down meal to break away from the hustle and bustle of the Disney Parks. We are avid Disney Deluxe Dining Plan users and with so many choices we love trying new places and enjoying familiar favorites.

Here is my list of Top 5 Disneyworld Casual Dining Restaurants.

5. Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater – The first thing that stands out about this restaurant is the seating arrangements. Having your meal in a convertible is one of Disney’s most unique Dining experiences. I love the B-Movie trailers that run on the Drive-In screen they are hilarious. Finally be sure to get a milkshake, I would have to say they are the best in all of Disneyworld!

4. San Angel Inn – Is my top choice as most romantic Dining Experience. The food is about as authentic as you can get, and much different than the Tex-Mex restaurants from back home. Make sure to jump on Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros before you leave Mexico.

3. Le Cellier Steakhouse – By far the best place to grab a steak at Walt Disney World. Always cooked to perfection with the best sides available. Be sure to sample the Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup, and the Chocolate Moose! YUMMY. To bad they are a signature 2 credit restaurant starting next year.

2. ‘Ohana – A very unique meal, served family style the skewered meats are heavenly! There is not one thing on this menu I don’t like and I find myself asking for seconds on just about everything. The bread pudding a la mode with Banana Foster sauce is my favorite dessert at Disney. The live entertainment is a perfect accompaniment with the meal!

1. Boma – If I could sum up Boma in one word it would be Flavor. The flavors of this all you can eat buffet is perfect. A fusion of Asian and India cuisines this is one restaurant you will come hungry and leave satisfied. I suggest making 2 reservations here on your next vacation.

This was a very hard list to make as there are some many Top Eats at DisneyWorld. What are some of your favorites let us know in the comment section below.

Best Things I Love About Disney – The Tree Of Life

Best Things I Love About Disney – The Tree Of Life

Talk about an icon!! The Tree of Life is positively the first thing most people think about when Disney’s Animal Kingdom is mentioned. It is not just beautiful but it is an engineering marvel. There is a lot of information available about the Tree of Life but, as usual, I generally find the best information about all things Disney in the Imagineering Field Guides.

A lot of folks (me included) thought that the Tree of Life must have been modeled after a huge noble tree in some exotic locale. In reality, the first inspiration came from a bonsai tree spotted by the Imagineers at the International Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot. A tiny piece of gardening art turned into magnificent piece of Imagineering art.

There are gorgeous carvings of animals in the trunk. I have heard varying numbers but the source that seems the most trustworthy places the number at 325. Here are several close ups that demonstrate the beauty of these carvings (not taken with a telephoto) that I took in 2009:

I have more but this demonstrates the sheer beauty of the art work as well as the aim of the tree which seems to be to relate how life is co dependent and meant to interact for survival. I think you will agree that it is truly beautiful.

I know I have said that Animal Kingdom is not my favorite park but there are several things that draw me back, if only for a short time, on each visit to Walt Disney World. This is one of them. Next time you visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom don’t just rush past this icon to get to Expedition Everest, take the time to really look at it. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

What is that Disney Magic?

What is that Disney Magic?

I was talking to my mother the other day about an article I had written entitled, “And to think…it all started with my mom!” She was saying that there was something extraordinary with me and Disney, as she had also taken my sister to Disneyland and Disney World, and many of our other relatives and friends have traveled there, but somehow I was the one who just fell in love with it. It was like it became part of my soul. What is it? I call it the Disney Magic.

Chances are that if you are reading this and you are a follower of Chip & Company, you know exactly what I am talking about. You LOVE Disney! It seems like such a simple thing, doesn’t it? You work just to be able to spend that vacation with your family in the most magical place on Earth.

Some people, especially those who have not visited Disney World, do not understand what drives me. Some of them have asked, “Why are you going to Disney World AGAIN?” There are two phrases that encompass my sentiment for those people: 1) I am sorry, Peter Pan, that you seem to have grown up, and 2) what can I do to help you plan a trip to Disney World so you can see for yourself?

Occasionally, people ask me, “But don’t you want to see other places?” The answer is yes, I do want to see other places. In fact, I have those places written down on a bucket list. Several times, my husband and I have flatly decided we were going to go somewhere else on our list rather than Disney World and it never fails that we change our minds. Once, we teased the kids that we wouldn’t be going on our annual trip to Disney that year and they acted like we said we were getting a divorce – like oh my gosh, what could be so wrong that we are not going to Disney World? They are very aware that we have gone super cheap during the years where just going was truly a miracle, as well as the years we have gone all out with free dining and gained weight despite all the walking. So they couldn’t image what could be so wrong that our trip would be off. They were glad to find out we were only playing a joke, although they did not find it amusing in the least. Anyhow, they should have known we were kidding because as soon as I am home from one trip I am already planning for the next one.

I am not exactly sure what drives us back, or what Disney Magic really is. Maybe it is how I am always wishing for a better tomorrow, where people smile more or reach out to each other in friendly ways but something about Disney definitely touches my heart. Then again, it could be destiny.

Whenever I read about Walt, it is as though I have a real connection with him somehow and, through the years, even when I haven’t had Disney in the forefront of my mind it seems to end up right back there. For instance, I host a book and film club at my home in which we read a book a month. Once a year we each choose a book we would like everyone to read. Last year, I chose a book called The Ultimate Gift by Jim Stovall. I loved the book and, wouldn’t you know it, while reading chapter 10 there was a true tale about Walt Disney staring me right in the face and warming my heart. These kinds of things happen to me often – I believe it is fate!

People either get the magic or they don’t. I know that I actually feel more alive and happier than at any other time when I am at Disney. I feel bad for those who don’t have it as I feel like they are missing out on something really special. I find myself rooting for them to get it and I would do anything to help them acquire it. I hope you have it, and I hope you will never lose the magic.

Best things I love about Disney – Pirates of the Caribbean

Best things I love about Disney – Pirates of the Caribbean

Easily one of the best rides at the Magic Kingdom! Pirates of the Caribbean has entertained millions of Walt Disney World guests on a thrilling adventure through dark, mysterious caverns where “dead men tell no tales” since it opened at Magic Kingdom on Dec. 15, 1973.

Starring a comical cast of rascals, scoundrels, villains and knaves, the eight-and-a-half minute Adventureland attraction sends guests of all ages on a rollicking boat ride to a Caribbean seaport under siege by a swashbuckling band of pirates.

History

  • Pirates of the Caribbean first opened at Disneyland in 1967 and continues to delight guests today. According to Disney archivist Dave Smith, many guests still consider it their favorite theme park attraction.
  • The Disneyland attraction originally was conceived by Walt Disney as a walk-through exhibit until the 1964 World’s Fair presentations created by WED Enterprises (now Walt Disney Imagineering) paved the way for a more sophisticated kind of three-dimensional storytelling known as Audio-Animatronics.
  • Veteran Disney animator and Imagineer Marc Davis created hundreds of humorous pirate drawings during the attraction’s development in the early 1960s, sketches that Disney sculptor Blaine Gibson helped bring to life as Audio-Animatronics figures.
  • The jaunty theme song by lyricist X. Atencio and composer George Bruns, “Yo Ho, Yo Ho; a Pirate’s Life for Me,” sets the attraction’s light tone with its tongue-in-cheek depiction of high-seas lawlessness.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean wasn’t included in the original plans for Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort — the Disney Imagineers thought that since Florida sits in the middle of the real Caribbean there would be little interest in a pirates-themed adventure.
  • Soon after opening in the fall of 1971, Walt Disney World Resort was inundated with guest comments expressing disappointment that the renowned Disneyland attraction was nowhere to be found in Magic Kingdom. By fall of 1972 Pirates of the Caribbean was under construction in Florida.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean opened in Florida’s Magic Kingdom on Dec. 15, 1973. It was one of the first major additions to the park following its grand opening in 1971.
  • Due to the hit motion picture “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” and the follow-up “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” the attraction was updated in summer 2006 with the addition of Captain Jack Sparrow and his nemesis Barbossa, from the feature films.
  • Audio enhancements, new special effects and the addition of the ghostly Davy Jones, from “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” also anchor the reopened attraction.

Fun Facts

  • The Walt Disney World attraction features 125 Audio-Animatronics figures — 65 pirates and villagers and 60 animals and birds.
  • Caribbean Plaza in Adventureland, where the attraction is located, features the Spanish and English architectural styles of the 18th century West Indies.
  • Paul Frees and Thurl Ravenscroft provided the voices for many of the attraction’s colorful characters. The prolific voice artists also can be heard throughout The Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom.
  • Lyricist X. Atencio supplied the voice for the talking skull and crossbones that delivers an ominous warning to passing guests: “Dead men tell no tales.”
  • Flat-bottomed boats that seat 15-18 passengers take guests on a gentle journey through a flume containing approximately 155,000 gallons of water, but beware — there’s a single plunge down a 14-foot chute in darkness, followed by a mild splash.
  • Sharp-eyed guests at the attraction will notice two chess-playing skeletons, their eerie match deadlocked in a tie.
  • Birnbaum’s Walt Disney World – The Official Guide depicts Pirates of the Caribbean as “One of the very best of the Magic Kingdom’s classic adventures” and honors the attraction with a “Birnbaum’s Best” endorsement.

The Magic Behind The Scenes – The Grass Is Always Greener

The Magic Behind The Scenes – The Grass Is Always Greener

One thing I have always admired is how green the grass and other plantings are at Walt Disney World. Congratulations should be given to the landscaping Cast Members for the endless hours and effort they put into maintaining it that way. Take it from a guy with a “Black Thumb” and a renowned plant killer, it’s not always easy. I envy their abilities.

There is another group that helps out with the greenery at Walt Disney World, my beloved Imagineers. Through their use of color and design they provide a boost to the work of the landscaping masters. Take a close look at the above picture. Notice the hint of color in the concrete, it is a very subtle shade of red. Those artists out there recognize that when you place red next to green, the green color is enhanced especially when the red is more subtle than the green. Yup – the concrete makes the grass look greener.

As you walk around the parks, notice the color of the walkways. When you are near expanses of greenery you should notice the red tinting and how it enhances the green of the landscaping. So – KUDOS to both the landscaping Cast Members and the Imagineers for a job well done!! As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Programs Flock to ElecTRONica Meet-Up

About 3,000 lucky Programs got to attend Disney Park Blog’s ElecTRONica meet-up in California Adventure on Thursday, October 28. The DJ kept the music pumping; the dancers kept everyone moving, and the End of the Line Club kept everyone buzzing (Glowjitos, beer, etc.). Guests were encouraged to dress in their TRON costumes and enjoy the games in Flynn’s Arcade. (I saw lots of cool costumes, but too bad things were so crazy that I didn’t get to take any photos of them!) Laserman performed for us, and we had the opportunity to watch the sneak peak of “TRON: Legacy” in 3D. (It wasn’t the first time I had watched it, but it was still total eye-candy.) From the looks of it, everyone was having a great time. Thank you, Disney Parks Blog!

Here are some photos from the event.

All Grid-goers received a special coin made JUST for last night’s event.

It Makes Perfect Sense to go to College Near Disneyland

It Makes Perfect Sense to go to College Near Disneyland

Chapman University is close to Disneyland. Very close. So is Cal State Fullerton. I won’t hide it — we’re lucky. (And that photo above is me in front of our university sign. That building in the background is Memorial Hall. Those doors are the same ones Denzel Washington walked through in “Crimson Tide“. And right in front of that building is Memorial lawn. If you’ve seen the movie “Accepted”, that’s where the “Ask me about my wiener” part takes place. Yeah. Chapman’s in movies. It’s awesome. And our film school is one of the best in the country. So is the business school. And we have the second largest piece of the Berlin Wall on a college campus. Yep. I get to be here every day, Monday through Friday. Totally not plugging my school…ahem. Moving on…)

If you’re a Disney lover, it only makes sense to go to college in Orange County. I had gotten accepted into a program at NYU, and I really wanted to go, but then I realized that I would be extremely far away from Disneyland (and my family…and old friends….and my boyfriend….and the school is ridiculously expensive). Why would I do that to myself?! So I’m stuck here….erm…I mean…I’m still living here.

If you’re going to college down here and you’re dorming, you can use your mailbox address to sign up for a SoCal pass or have the ability to make monthly payments rather than paying the full price all at once. Monthly payment plans = Disneyland is “cheap” entertainment. (If you were to add up how much it costs to go to clubs, the movies, or out to dinner, the costs far outweigh the price of a Disneyland annual pass over time. Trust me.) The annual pass can be used at both Disneyland AND California Adventure. Sounds like a great deal to me! (I basically get to see World of Color when I feel like it.) Not once have I ever regretted getting a pass, especially now that I pay for it myself with the monthly payments. Also, the school might offer a student discount on the annual pass, like Chapman does, but you’d have to pay the full amount all at once rather than through monthly payments.

Yes, college has been a lot of work for me, as well as other students I know. (I thought I had a lot of work, but apparently I have it easy compared to some other students.) But there’s always time for a quick trip to Disneyland, right? You don’t have to stay long, just for a few hours (hence the beauty of having an annual pass) and get back home/get back to your dorm with enough time to finish up assignments. I do it all the time! Disneyland is my relaxation time, my time to put my assignments in the back of my mind and focus on the magic in front of me. But once I leave the park, it’s back to Stressville. Work must be done. (But Disneyland is a great reward for getting your stuff finished.)

If your son or daughter is approaching the college age, let them consider going to college out here. It’s fantastic. Aside from Disneyland we’ve got great beaches as well as other theme parks and nice weather. Very nice weather. (The past couple weeks don’t count!) Plus, if you come down to visit him/her, the whole family can take a trip to Disneyland!

If you have any questions about what it’s like to go to school down here, feel  free to ask me. I’ll answer to the best of my ability. You can email me at [email protected].
