Register your student for Individual Enrollment - Disney Youth Education Series

Now even your students who aren’t part of a group can take part in Disney Youth Education Series with Individual Enrollment. On select dates at Disneyland® Resort and Walt Disney World® Resort, Individual Enrollment allows individuals, homeschoolers, virtual students and community groups to participate in this magical learning experience.

Transport your students into a world of education, Disney-style, within the magical setting of the Disney Parks that showcases how valuable principles learned in the classroom make exciting things happen every day at our Disney attractions. Taught by specially trained Disney facilitators, Disney Youth Education Series programs are offered in four disciplines—Leadership & Careers, Arts & Humanities, Physical Sciences and Natural Sciences. The hands-on courses increase learning desire, encourage students to reach their potential and demonstrate the importance of teamwork, all in a unique setting that combines the classroom with the real world.

After the program, students are encouraged to continue the fun at the Theme Parks where they are free to explore attractions and continue learning as they see how the knowledge they’ve gained is applied throughout the Disney Parks.

Through this memorable experience, students walk away wide-eyed and ready to embrace a world of limitless possibilities!

Though the programs are meant to give individuals and small groups (fewer than 10 at Walt Disney World Resort and fewer than 15 at Disneyland Resort) the chance to participate in Disney Youth Education Series, a minimum number of participants must be reached for each program to be activated. The purchase of a ticket does not ensure program activation. You will be contacted if the minimum is not reached for your selected program. All children 12 and under must have a responsible adult on the program with them. Children 13 and older who will not have a parent or responsible adult with them MUST have a parent/guardian accompany them to the start of the program and sign a waiver in case of emergency and the parent/guardian must be present in the same park as the program their child is participating in case of an emergency.

Disney Fairy Tale Weddings New Rapunzel Gown by Alfred Angelo

Disney Fairy Tale Weddings New Rapunzel Gown by Alfred Angelo

Disney Fairy Tale Weddings by Alfred Angelo will unveil the exciting new Rapunzel wedding gown to press at its upcoming annual bridal fashion show on Friday April 8, 2011 at EZ studios in New York. Rapunzel’s gown is the latest addition to the celebrated Disney Fairy Tale Weddings by Alfred Angelo collection of seven Disney Princess-inspired wedding gowns that launched earlier this year.

Following the box office success and upcoming DVD release of the movie, Tangled, Rapunzel is becoming her own classic Disney character loved by fans around the world. As a result, Michael Shettel, designer for Alfred Angelo, created a Rapunzel inspired bridal gown that reflects the character’s confident, unconventional approach to style. The gown’s one shoulder dropped waist, pleated bodice represents the unique, artistic vision that Rapunzel brides bring to everything they do. The delicate three-dimensional satin petals on the skirt pay homage to the natural things Rapunzel longs for, and expresses through her artistry. These petals are adorned with light-catching crystals and twinkling sequins to represent the lanterns she views every year on her birthday from her tower.

Also gracing the runway at the press preview on April 8, is the new Cinderella Platinum wedding gown. The gown, which was presented at a special Walt Disney World® Resort event last month, was created to commemorate the 20th (Platinum) Anniversary of Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons in Orlando, Florida. Shettel’s special edition design includes a multitude of asymmetric tulle layers paired with a head-turning bejeweled bodice. This special gown not only celebrates the fairy tale that inspired it, but incorporates nostalgic and modern elements that span the 20 years of Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings.

Disney fans and wedding industry bloggers were invited for the first glimpse of the Cinderella Platinum wedding gown, and selected brides-to-be were given the opportunity to try it on before it was released publicly.

“I was immediately transformed into a princess,” commented Amanda Day, the first bride-to-be to slip into the style. “I didn’t want to take it off! And it took my mother’s breath away to see me in that dress. It was amazing.”

“We are excited to continue to offer brides new Disney Princess-inspired styles that allow them to look and feel like a princess on their magical day too,” said Robert Oberschelp, Director Disney Collections. “Look for Disney Consumer Products and Alfred Angelo to continue to unveil more special edition bridal gowns and accessories soon.”

The Rapunzel bridal gown and Cinderella Platinum anniversary gown from Disney Fairy Tale Weddings by Alfred Angelo will be available for retail in Alfred Angelo Signature Stores and bridal shops worldwide in late summer 2011. RunDisney – Beyond the Runner’s High

RunDisney - Beyond the Runner's High

Completing your first race, whether you are running a 5k or the Goofy Challenge (yes, it does happen), is a huge accomplishment.  Many runners will finish a race and feel a huge sense of accomplishment and what is known as a “runner’s high. ”  Endorphins that are triggered by such strenuous exercise can make even a painful run seem exciting and leave you anxious to register for your next race.

But, for many of us, those big runDisney races are far, and few between.  While registration for Walt Disney World’s Marathon Weekend opens only 2 months after that first race, those 2 months can seem like ages.  Then, even if you register early, you have 10 more months until the race.  How do you stay motivated to run and train with the big races a year apart?

For me, the runner’s high from the Walt Disney World Half Marathon 2011 lasted nearly 2 weeks.  Walking through the parks for several days following the race wearing my running gear and medal, I was constantly reminded that I had just accomplished a huge fete.  Once back home, coworkers, family, and friends asked me about the races, so I was able to share my stories again.  But, once that energy calmed, I had to find a way to keep myself motivated and continue running, knowing that my next runDisney race sadly would not be the WDW Wine and Dine Half or the Disneyland Half, but the 2012 WDW Half Marathon.

That’s where Active.com came in handy.  My husband and I returned home and immediately started searching for local races to keep us in the running groove.  We found a 10k, that we just completed last weekend, and have our eyes on more local races, including a half marathon that I am registered for in June.  Now, in early spring, there are 5-10ks on a regular basis, and even a few half marathons that we’re looking into and registering for to keep us motivated and in shape.

Local running stores are also great resources for races or even running teams, for regularly scheduled group runs.

Why We Love Disney’s Epcot Resorts

Why We Love Disney’s Epcot Resorts

When people ask me which of Disney’s many resorts is my favorite I usually have a hard time answering because I love so many of them….for different reasons. At certain times of the year like during the Christmas season, Wilderness Lodge can’t be beat. When I want someplace peaceful, quiet and serene, with amazing art and design…and animals….I tend to vote for Animal Kingdom Lodge. If I’m wishing for a Caribbean vacation without actually visiting the Caribbean, then I tend to lean towards the Caribbean Beach Resort.

But generally speaking, my first choice is nearly always one of the Epcot resorts: the Boardwalk, Yacht and Beach Club, and Disney’s Swan and Dolphin. And yes, I did include all five resorts as ONE favorite, because while they are all different, they all share ONE thing that makes them a favorite for me: a fantastic location!

Located on Crescent Lake and situated perfectly between Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, these resorts offer what is to my Epcot-loving family the ultimate benefit: the ability to be able to leisurely stroll to Epcot. Yes STROLL. No waiting for busses or the monorail, no standing room only, no multiple stops until you get to your destination….just a nice relaxing walk (with a stop for coffee and/or a muffin…. LOVE Boardwalk Bakery!) and then on to Epcot. Guests from this area can enter Epcot through World Showcase’s International Gateway, and let me tell you that this is such a great way to start your day! Virtually no lines, bag check is quick and you’re in and on your way! And the walk is delightful: it’s peaceful and lovely, and as you get closer to Epcot, you hear the wonderful Disney background music from World Showcase that just gets you in the mood to have a wonderful day!

It is also possible to walk to Hollywood Studios from the Boardwalk, and it’s a bit longer of a walk, perhaps 10 minutes or so, but it’s still great to again stroll along the waterway to head over to DHS. Or run: this entire loop in fact is quite popular with folks who like to take their morning jog before heading out to the parks each day.

Now you also have the ability to get to either Epcot or Hollywood Studios by boat, and that is another option that we enjoy. Connecting Epcot, Boardwalk, Yacht and Beach Club, the Swan and Dolphin, and Hollywood Studios, the Friendship boats provide a continuous loop of transporting park guests to each of these areas. Convenient, relaxing, and again rarely as crowded as you would experience on the busses or monorails, the Friendship boats are a great way to get around. And they are especially nice going back in the evening when your feet are too tired to walk any further!

The most important thing to make note of when using the boats is to read the signs CAREFULLY before you get on, to make sure you are headed in the direction you want to go…and when in doubt, ask the Captain before you get on. 🙂

Now of course, these resorts have plenty of other things to recommend them. Some favorites include:

  • Stormalong Bay at Yacht and Beach Club: Probably every kid’s idea of what the perfect pool and water play area should be, this mini-water park is extremely popular.
  • The Boardwalk at the Boardwalk: Try renting bikes or one of the surreys and travel around the lake for some great affordable, old-fashioned fun.
  • The Heavenly Beds at the Swan and Dolphin: I don’t know if I have ever found anything that is more appropriately named than these Heavenly Beds. After a long, exhausting day at the parks, sinking into this cushioned bliss is…..heavenly.
  • ESPN Zone: OK, we truly appreciated this during last year’s football playoffs, when we were able to stop in for a few hours to watch our game. We had a blast: we got a seat, ordered some food, made new friends, and had a truly fantastic afternoon. (Yes, and our team won….Go Steelers! 🙂  )
  • Plus some of the best places to eat on Disney property!

In real estate, they say location is everything. If you love Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios…then you truly can’t beat these five great resorts for the ultimate perk: location, location, location!

Best Things I Love About Disney – The Carousel Of Progress

Best Things I Love About Disney - The Carousel Of Progress

There aren’t a lot of attractions left that are truly “old Disney” but the Carousel of Progress (COP) is definitely one of them. Sure, it’s not a thriller chiller and the animatronics are definitely dated but it has that one thing that”old Disney” has that is lacking in a lot of the new stuff – CHARM!!

I was given the 50th Anniversary Musical History of Disneyland by my wife for Christmas a few years back and I can’t tell you how many times I have listened to the audio from the Disneyland version of COP while driving (it has the original Tiki Room too). For a while, I listened to it so often that I nearly had it memorized. The Walt Disney World version is just a little bit different and has been updated just a little to keep up with the times but all of the old characters are still there, even the dog who has undergone several name changes over the years.

Not only is COP entertaining, it’s also a great way to sit and relax in air conditioned comfort while enjoying the show – a nice break from what can be a very hectic Magic Kingdom. I know most people like to head for the Magic Kingdom Mountain Range (Big Thunder, Splash, and Space) but as the day wears on and you wear out take some time to stop by COP. There is rarely a long wait and you will welcome the CHARMING little vignettes as your seats circle the stage and “father” spins his stories. It’s one of those smell the roses opportunities that too many of us pass up while scurrying here and there trying to hit every E-Ticket attraction. Do yourself a favor, especially if you haven’t done so in a while and visit the Carousel of Progress on your next vacation. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Birthdays at Walt Disney World: Let the Fun Begin!

Birthdays at Walt Disney World: Let the Fun Begin!
Sophie's Button was hand drawn by one of the Disney Artists!

We love taking our vacation trips during Sophie’s birthday!  There is so much to enjoy at Disney when you are visiting for your birthday, for us it is a no-brainer to book our vacation during that time of the year!  For this post, I’m going to go into some of the special touches that Disney puts on to help you celebrate your birthday right!

First of all, I have found it a key point to make sure that Disney knows that you are celebrating a birthday when you check-in.  In fact, I have made sure that they know even before we leave home, because I want to make sure that Sophie’s birthday is given the special attention that it deserves!

When we check-in, the first thing that the Cast Member does is create a special birthday button for Sophie, with her name written on it for everyone to see.  It should be noted here that rarely does the name last all week for us, but last year, we were able to get Sophie’s birthday button redone by one of the Disney Artists over at Hollywood Studios!  It was really cool, and made Sophie’s day when he re-did it!

Another really cool thing that Disney does for the birthday person is to give them a free dessert when you eat at a table service restaurant.  For Sophie, it was always a special brownie or cupcake that she could decorate herself.  In addition, for our character meals (which we love to have, by the way, but that’s a different post), the characters always give Sophie a signed birthday card for her to keep.

Birthdays at Walt Disney World: Let the Fun Begin!
The Fantasyland Woodwind Society playing Happy Birthday

Another special thing that Disney has done for Sophie on her birthday include the time that the Fantasyland Woodwind Society played “Happy Birthday” for Sophie and another lady who was also celebrating her birthday while we were in line for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

Lastly, one of the coolest things happened to us when we were visiting Disney during Sophie’s birthday one year.  That year, we came home from the parks to find our room had been decorated with a special balloon, birthday card and picture from Minnie Mouse!  Sophie was so excited, and so were we!

All of these special touches have added up to some wonderful birthday memories for Sophie and us, and plans for more birthday memories to come!
