Disney lions, tigers and cheetahs find perfume “paws-itively” appealing

Disney lions, tigers and cheetahs find perfume “paws-itively” appealing

Cheap perfume and lions may not seem a likely match. But at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the scent of the wild can be found in hundreds of perfume bottles being recycled by Disney cast members.

Animal experts have long used unique aromas such as perfumes and spices as enrichment tools to help maintain an animal’s physical and mental health. Special treats such as toys, foods or fragrance prompt animals to explore, make choices, and maintain a level of activity in their habitat similar to their natural behavior in the wild. With a very keen sense of smell, large cats such as lions, cheetahs and tigers like to scratch, roll and mark their own scents on logs sprayed with cologne.

In addition to “aromatherapy,” lions, cheetahs and tigers are provided with a variety of other enrichment items and activities to keep the cats interested in their environments.

  • Super tough plastic balls for chasing and swatting promotes physical activity.
  • Drilling a hole in the ball and stuffing it with hard-to-get treats increases the challenge and the excitement.
  • During the summer, frozen treats may contain meat to help the cats stay cool and encourage them to use their teeth, claws and ingenuity to get to the delight inside.
  • A habitat complete with hills, tall grasses, shade trees, rocks, shrubs, fabricated termite mounds, dead trees, stumps and a sweeping view of the savannah provide opportunities to rest, communicate, interact, hide, explore the sweeping views of the savannah.

“Enrichment such as perfume is just one of the tools used to provide world-class care for our animals,” said Matt Hohne, animal operations director for Disney’s Animal Programs. “We also rely on positive training methods that encourage animals to participate in their daily health care and challenge them to stay mentally active.”

Positive conditioning techniques train the animals to cooperate with their own medical care, which makes the vets’ work much easier and safer. For example, with a hand signal or verbal cue from a zoological manager, lions, cheetahs and tigers voluntarily open their mouths for dental exams or stand on a portable scale for routine weight checks. They also present their tails or paws during medical check-ups.

This attention to care is given to all of the more than 1,700 animals representing more than 250 species at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Guests can see lions and cheetahs on the savannah of Kilimanjaro Safari while the tigers can be seen on the Maharaja Jungle Trek within the Asia section of the theme park.

New Storybook Rooms and Health and Wellness Suites at Walt Disney World

New Storybook Rooms and Health and Wellness Suites at Walt Disney World

Over the course of the next year, new Walt Disney World Resort hotel rooms and suites will open that will allow guests to sleep like visiting Disney royalty or perhaps add a yoga session or two to their Disney vacation. It’s part of an overall lodging strategy at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts that includes the addition of new niche rooms and suites to its guest offerings.

Beginning in fall 2011, guests will be able to experience new health and wellness suites on the 14th floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort. In the spring of 2012, new Royal Guest Rooms at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort will take guests on a vacation getaway to Princess Tiana’s guest house where her friends have also come to visit.

“All Walt Disney World Resort hotel rooms and suites are completely renovated on a regular cycle,” said Mark Rucker, vice president of lodging for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “Our new Royal Guest Rooms at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort and the new health and wellness suites at Disney’s Contemporary Resort are examples of how we use our scheduled renovation time to look for new opportunities to ‘plus up’ the guest experience.”

Rucker says health and wellness rooms and amenities are an emerging trend in travel, particularly amongst guests who stay in deluxe accommodations. The health and wellness suites on the 14th floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort will provide guests who fit that travel profile with the ultimate balanced Disney vacation by including all the magic and fun of Disney theme parks while making healthy and relaxing amenities easier than ever to enjoy.

Inside the new suites, guests will be able to enjoy the benefit of exercising at the own pace and time with cardio equipment right in their suite. They’ll also be able to start and end their days with seasonal and organic fresh foods at the concierge lounge or enjoy a yoga session and spa treatment in the completely renovated wellness studio. Guests staying on the 14th floor can also take advantage of more traditional club level services, like advance itinerary planning.

The new suites are being renovated with new Bamboo flooring, 100% cotton linens on the non-allergenic wrapped mattresses, as well as rain water showers in the bathrooms. Of course, the 23 completely renovated suites on the 14th Floor of Disney’s Contemporary Resort also provide sweeping top floor views of Magic Kingdom Park and Bay Lake.   Continuing the popular “storybook” room concept launched in 2009 at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort with elaborately themed pirate rooms, 512 rooms at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort are being renovated with a new “Royal Guest Room” theme centered on Disney princes and princesses.

The story behind the Royal Guest Rooms is Princess Tiana from “The Princess and the Frog” invited her royal friends for a vacation getaway. Friends like Belle from “Beauty and the Beast” and Jasmine from “Aladdin” brought along some of their most treasured possessions. Since “The Princess and the Frog” is set in Princess Tiana’s hometown of New Orleans, Disney’s Port Orleans Resort is a natural fit for the story.

A new royal bed design that includes headboards with special effects above ornately decorated beds and various icons associated with Disney princes and princesses throughout the room will further immerse guests in their favorite stories.

Generally, Walt Disney World Resort rooms are completely renovated on a 12-year cycle. The room’s “soft goods” – including carpets, fabric, and paint – are replaced after six years; and the “hard goods” – including furniture, fixtures, and flooring – are replaced after 12 years, which is in line with industry standards.

All 3,056 rooms at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort, including the 512 new Royal Guest Rooms, are undergoing a hard goods renovation that will be compete by June 2012.

Another niche guest lodging offering at Walt Disney World Resort will be available when 1,020 family suites and 864 value rooms open at the new Disney’s Art of Animation Resort beginning in May 2012.

Hold it! The truth about the “courtesy hold”

Hold it! The truth about the "courtesy hold"

Picture this-You are planning your Disney Cruise Line vacation and during the quote process you hear the inevitable “would you like me to place that on a courtesy hold for you?”

Time seems to stand still as you ponder this question…

  • Do you really need to hold your desired stateroom, or is it a sales technique?
  • Is it really just a “courtesy” or is there fine print you haven’t read?
  • What is a courtesy hold and do you need it or not?

I personally always felt pressured by the courtesy hold and refused it, quickly hanging the phone up in momentary panic. When curiosity got the best of me I flat out asked a cast member what the fine print on the “courtesy hold” was and it turns out it’s exactly what it seems: a courtesy hold, no strings attached.

Here’s the story…If you are interested in a Disney Cruise but aren’t immediately prepared to place your deposit (which is approximately 20% of the cruise fare) you can place your desired stateroom on a 5-day courtesy hold. This reserves your selected stateroom while you consider your options, gather funds for deposit, etc. If you choose not to place your deposit the room is simply released back into the system when your 5-days are up. You don’t even have to call and make an excuse for why the cruise isn’t right for you! There is no obligation, no penalty and no payment information required. The cruise line does require the legal first and last name of each member in the travel party (birthdate is requested as well) it’s as simple as that!

It wasn’t until I became an agent (specializing in Disney travel of course!) that I was able to truly appreciate the courtesy hold. If you didn’t see it, you wouldn’t believe it but one more than one occasion staterooms have been disappearing as I’m preparing a quote. It’s magical for Disney, that the cruise line is sailing at capacity, but not so magical when I’m trying to book your dream vacation and receive a notice that the stateroom is no longer available!

If you are interested in a particular sail date or itinerary but aren’t quite ready to place the deposit, say “YES” to the courtesy hold. It could very possibly be the three letter word that stands between you and the “big blue world”.

Chip and Co Featured Partner – Meet the Magic

Chip and Co Featured Partner - Meet the Magic

Meet the Magic site began out of the love for Disney and the want for meeting others in the Disney community that shared as much passion for Disney as I do.  I have many great memories from hours spent in theme parks throughout my childhood.  Living in Nashville, I had always had Opryland U.S.A. as a local theme park for summer fun.  However, the park closed many years back.  As a result, I began to look to other places for theme park fun.  I visited many parks trying to find the best match.  Opryland had always been a place where parents felt their children were safe.  The rides were all well maintained and the park was kept very clean.  Other parks I had visited closer to my house did not mirror these same attributes.  In fact, nearly the only place I found this level of comfort was Walt Disney World.

After college, my family and I began taking regular vacations to Walt Disney World.  From there it just went crazy!  I began finagling multiple trips to Walt Disney World throughout the year.  My Grandfather lived about an hour from the theme park and made for an even better vacation; a visit to see Granddad and a visit to the theme parks!  A wonderful combination that I wish I could recreate now.

Five years ago, I introduced my son to Walt Disney World.  I love spending hours in the parks with my son in hopes he will find some of his own wonderful childhood memories there in the parks at Walt Disney World.  I find that during our time in the parks, he and I enjoy spending time with the other people while standing in line or while eating a meal who are enjoying the parks as much as we are.  My son loves to sit with people on the bus and discuss his fun he has had that day while inquiring as to their favorite part of their day.

In planning for our vacation about a year ago, I decided I wanted to see if there were others who would be vacation at Walt Disney World at the same time as our upcoming trip.  The search was not a quick one.  In fact, I was not able to find anyone!  In the months to come, I began a mission to find other that were as interested in Walt Disney World as I was.  They do exist, right?!?  Soon after, I began my blog at Meet the Magic where I discussed our vacation fun had, plans for vacations to come and the like.  What I found were Disney peeps!  I was so excited to find people who were interested in Disney as much as I was!

Now that the site is several months old, I have been able to meet loads of people who bring me magic daily!  The site now includes several contributor:  Cooking with Mickey, who shares various food and dining articles, Aussie John, who provides vivid articles on a variety of Disney travel topics, DisneyNine, our British correspondent who shares her favorites while visiting Walt Disney World, Krystal, who shares her inside information on being a past cast member, and  Julia, who discusses important details behind planning your trip to Disney World.

These contributors have helped to make Meet the Magic a wonderful place to meet!  In addition to these wonderful articles, Tuesdays I write the Strategies for Paying for Disney articles.  I am a CPA by trade, thus thinking of money on a regular basis comes natural!  I had had so many people over the years question me on how it was that I afford my vacation to Disney World so often.  To help address these questions, I began writing my weekly Strategies for Paying for Disney articles where I detail the various strategies I have implemented for myself to help me pay for my trips.  I have had a great response to these articles and hope you will also enjoy reading them!

I hope you will come over to Meet the Magic and spend some time with my wonderful contributors!

Marvel Studios Begins Production Of Epic Feature “Marvel’s The Avengers”

Marvel Studios Begins Production Of Epic Feature “Marvel’s The Avengers”

Production has commenced today in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated movie “Marvel’s The Avengers,” directed by Joss Whedon (“Serenity”) from a screenplay by Whedon.  The film will continue principal photography in Cleveland, Ohio and New York City.  Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”) returns as the iconic Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”) as Thor, Chris Evans (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) as Captain America, Jeremy Renner (“Thor,” “The Hurt Locker”) as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo (“The Kids Are Alright”) as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson (“Iron Man 2”) as Black Widow, Clark Gregg (“Iron Man,” “Thor”) as Agent Phil Coulson, and Samuel L. Jackson (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”) as Nick Fury.  Set for release in the US on May 4, 2012, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is the first feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.

Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Marvel’s The Avengers” is the Super Hero team up of a lifetime.  When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as SHIELD, finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, “Marvel’s The Avengers” brings together the mightiest Super Hero characters as they all assemble together on screen for the first time.  The star studded cast of Super Heroes will be joined by Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother) as Agent Maria Hill of SHIELD, as well as Tom Hiddleston (“Wallander”) and Stellan Skarsgård (“Angels & Demons,” “Mamma Mia!”) who will both reprise their respective roles as Loki and Professor Erik Selvig from the upcoming MarvelStudios’ feature “Thor.”

“Marvel’s The Avengers” is being produced by Marvel Studios’ President, Kevin Feige, and executive produced by Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Louis D’Esposito, Patty Whitcher, and Jon Favreau.  Marvel Studios’ Jeremy Latcham and Victoria Alonso will co-produce.

The creative production team also includes Oscar® nominated director of photography Seamus McGarvey (“Atonement”), production designer James Chinlund (“25th Hour”), Oscar winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne (“Elizabeth: The Golden Age”), Oscar winning visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs (“Iron Man 2,” “The Matrix”), visual effects producer Susan Pickett (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”), stunt coordinator R.A. Rondell (“Superman Returns”), and four-time Oscar nominated special effects supervisor Dan Sudick (“Iron Man,” “War of the Worlds”).  The editors include Oscar nominated Paul Rubell (“Collateral”) and Jeffrey Ford (“Crazy Heart”).

Marvel Studios most recently produced “Iron Man 2” which was released in theatres on May 7, 2010.  The sequel to “Iron Man,” starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow as well as Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson and Mickey Rourke, took the number one spot its first weekend with a domestic box office gross of $128.1 million.  To date the film has earned over $620 million in worldwide box office receipts.

In the summer of 2008, Marvel produced the summer blockbuster movies, “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk.”  “Iron Man,” in which Robert Downey Jr. originally dons the Super Hero’s powerful armor alongside co-stars Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, was released May 2, 2008 and was an immediate box office success.  Garnering the number one position for two weeks in a row, the film brought in over $100 million its opening weekend and grossed over $571 million worldwide.  On June 13, 2008, Marvel released “The Incredible Hulk” marking its second number one opener of that summer.  The spectacular revival of the iconic green goliath grossed over $250 million in worldwide box office receip

Disneyland employee falls in park, dies of natural causes

Disneyland employee falls in park, dies of natural causes

A Disney cast member collapsed last Wednesday in Disneyland amusement park, and later died.

Philip Doyle, 58, worked in the food services department.  Doyle was making a delivery after 1 pm near the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction and his co-workers got concerned when he didn’t return quickly.   He was found with very shallow breathing.

An Anaheim ambulance was called around 1:18pm and he was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead at 2:16 pm, said Deputy Coroner Larry Esslinger.

Disney officials released a statement, “Philip was a longtime member of our Disney family. As we grieve his loss, we also offer our deepest sympathy to Philip’s family, friends and loved ones.”

Wednesday with Walt: Yep, That’s What It’s All About

Wednesday with Walt: Yep, That's What It's All About

I can easily say that ‘Disney’ is one of the best things in my life. I cannot imagine a world void of the influence of Walt Disney: a world with no Mickey Mouse; no example of eternal optimism and the importance of  a good attitude when I was a child; no Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Mary Poppins or Sleeping Beauty by which to learn to dream big dreams; no Disneyland or Walt Disney World at which to share precious and lifelong memories with my family. I believe with all my heart that Walt Disney was born with a purpose and he fulfilled that purpose to the very best of his ability; and I, like so many others, am very thankful for his life.

Wouldn’t life be wonderful if it could just be “all Disney, all the time”? Wanting a better world is something I totally understand and to which I closely relate. Still – no matter how badly we want things to be that way (and, believe me I do) the fact is that life has a way of getting us down if we allow it. I have always found that the quickest way to feel better is to do something kind for someone else. Walt was just like all of us. He had great days when everything was fantastic and he had terribly heartbreaking days in his life as well.

Just like us, Walt sometimes needed a little reminder of what is important. Richard Sherman has said that during the last year or two of Walt’s life, he would invite the Sherman brothers to his office after work on Fridays. Together, they would talk about things that were going on at the Studio; and then, after a while, he’d say ‘Play it.’ Richard knew exactly what song he meant. The song was “Feed the Birds” from Mary Poppins and here are the lyrics.

Early each day to the steps of Saint Paul’s

The little old bird woman comes.

In her own special way to the people she calls,

“Come, buy my bags full of crumbs.

Come feed the little birds, show them you care

And you’ll be glad if you do.

Their young ones are hungry,

Their nests are so bare;

All it takes is tuppence from you.”

Feed the birds, tuppence a bag,

Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.

“Feed the birds,” that’s what she cries,

While overhead, her birds fill the skies.

All around the cathedral the saints and apostles

Look down as she sells her wares.

Although you can’t see it, you know they are smiling

Each time someone shows that he cares.

Though her words are simple and few,

Listen, listen, she’s calling to you:

“Feed the birds, tuppence a bag,

Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.”

The song speaks of an old beggar woman who sits on the steps of Saint Paul’s Cathedral, selling bags of breadcrumbs to passersby for tuppence a bag, so they can feed the many pigeons who surround the old woman. The song isn’t about feeding pigeons at all, but about how little it costs to be kind and to show love to others. My favorite part of the song is, “All around the cathedral the saints and apostles look down as she sells her wares. Although you can’t see it, you know they are smiling, each time someone shows that he cares.”

Robert Sherman has said it was the first song written about the merits of giving charity. It was a subtle thing but Walt understood exactly what the song meant, because that’s what he was all about. He loved that song. Walt would stare out of the North window in his office as they played it and then he would say, “Yep. That’s what it’s all about.”

Yes, indeed, Mr. Disney — that IS what it’s all about!
