The Disney Dream Innovations and Itineraries

The Disney Dream Innovations and Itineraries

The Disney Dream is the first of two new Disney ships being built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany.  The Disney Fantasy is also currently in production and is scheduled to set sail on its maiden voyage on April 7, 2012.

Disney Dream Innovations
Known for establishing the family cruise market when the Disney Magic debuted in 1998, Disney Cruise Line continues to build upon this success with a focus on the legacy and heritage of The Walt Disney Company’s most known assets – master storytelling, world-class entertainment and legendary guest service. In addition to all of the features Disney Cruise Line is known for, the Disney Dream will have several new notable innovations for guests to enjoy.

  • AquaDuck, a first-of-its-kind water coaster, is an exhilarating, high-speed thrill ride that combines all the ups and downs of a roller coaster with all the twists and turns of a water slide.
  • Magical Portholes offer a “virtual window” to the world for inside staterooms, with a real-time view outside the ship where high-definition cameras feed live video to each stateroom.
  • Enchanted Art immerses guests in Disney storytelling and looks like other hanging art pieces around the ship, but is actually a framed LCD screen with technology that recognizes a guest is present.
  • Remy, an exquisite top-deck restaurant, only for adults, with incredible ocean views and French-inspired, gourmet cuisine by two award-winning chefs.

New Itineraries

With the addition of two new ships, Disney Cruise Line is able to more formally expand its itineraries to new destinations, including Alaska, while continuing to offer cruises to some of the line’s most popular itineraries.

The Disney Dream will sail three-, four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas from Port Canaveral, Fla., while sister ship Disney Fantasy, is set to sail seven-night alternating eastern and western Caribbean itineraries, also from Port Canaveral, beginning in 2012.  The Disney Magic will continue sailing seven-night eastern and western Caribbean cruises, before returning to the Mediterranean for another summer of cruising in this region in 2011.  The Disney Wonder will begin 2011 by repositioning to the West Coast of the U.S., sailing seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises from the Port of Los Angeles, while spending the summer sailing first-ever Alaskan itineraries from Vancouver.

Based in Celebration, Fla., the Disney Cruise Line experience is focused on providing a setting where families can reconnect, adults can recharge and kids can immerse themselves in worlds of fantasy only Disney can create.  Most recently, the company was recognized as the top cruise experience by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler magazine.  Disney Cruise Line was voted the No. 1 cruise experience in the magazine’s 2010 Readers’ Choice Awards in the mega-ship category.

Club Penguin – Inspiring kids to help children in Haiti

Club Penguin – Inspiring kids to help children in Haiti

Young fans of the virtual world of Club Penguin (www.clubpenguin.com) recently got the opportunity to share the joy of play and creativity, and help build a new school for children whose lives were devastated by the earthquake in Haiti.

The Art for Haiti initiative encouraged kids around the world who play Club Penguin to submit drawings of what fun means to them and vote on their favorite entry. A Club Penguin artist then travelled to Haiti to paint the top choice, which showed three colorful penguins playing soccer, on a wall at the Marie Educatrice Terre Casse Elementary School. The school, which is being rehabilitated by Free The Children houses more than 450 children from preschool to grade six, and has been overwhelmed with large numbers of new students displaced by last January’s earthquake.

Thanks in large part to the support of the kids who play Club Penguin, Disney Online Studios donated $100,000 to help Free The Children (www.freethechildren.com) complete the rehabilitation project so children can safely return to the school this fall. The donation also paid for the construction of additional buildings, the creation of the mural and a new playground, which is coming soon.

“The kids who play Club Penguin continue to show us how passionate they are about helping others, and their enthusiasm for giving kids in Haiti a place to play and a place to learn is just one more example of their commitment,” says Lane Merrifield, executive vice president of Disney Online Studios and co-founder of Club Penguin.”

“It’s been a difficult year for the children of Haiti; but we know it is the children that will craft the future of the country. Club Penguin’s mural and the energy of the kids from around the world who submitted artwork has served as an inspiration, encouraging the Haitian children to dream and be creative, and to celebrate education and play,” says Erin Barton-Chéry, Haiti Programming Director for Free The Children. “One of the grade 5 children, Cindy, said it best: ‘The beautiful painting has encouraged us, especially kids like me, who have come from other places after the earthquake. It makes our school special!’

Club Penguin is a snow-covered virtual playground that’s enjoyed in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese by children and families in more than 190 countries. Word filters and live moderators monitor chat and activity on the site and work to prevent the sharing of inappropriate or personally identifiable information. Club Penguin is free to play, however paying members receive special features such as front-of-the-line access to game features, exclusive parties and opportunities to customize their penguin and igloo.

Art for Haiti is just one example of Club Penguin’s ongoing efforts to empower its players to help change the world. A portion of the proceeds from each Club Penguin membership purchase supports organizations working to improve the lives of children and families around the globe. The annual Coins for Change online giving campaign each December lets players vote on where some of those donations go.

Club Penguin also supports kids or schools that want to help a village in one of the world’s poorest regions with a matching gift program, and sponsors a free speaking tour and leadership program to empower elementary school students. For more information on these and other initiatives, visit http://www.clubpenguin.com/global-citizenship/.

Raglan Road Pub and Restaurant at Downtown Disney Offers Emerald Isle Charm, Fresh Irish Fare, Lively Entertainment

A true slice of Ireland has come to Walt Disney World Resort with the opening of Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant at Downtown Disney Pleasure Island. Owned and operated by an Irish company, Raglan Road features the very best of authentic Irish food, drink, heritage and live entertainment.

The Irish culture is known for its warmth, character and hospitality, and Raglan Road delivers an experience immersed in genuine Irish ambiance. With capacity for 600 guests, Raglan Road is warm and welcoming with custom furnishings, lighting and wall coverings — all designed and built in Ireland by Irish craftspeople. Irish antiques, ornamentation and bric-a-brac complete the authentic décor.

Four distinct antique bars, each more than 130 years old and imported from Ireland, serve as focal gathering areas. These grand fixtures were crafted from rich woods, such as mahogany and walnut, and feature marble adornments, leaded glass and ornate detailing. To complete the authenticity, and in keeping with tradition, a wide selection of cold, creamy and fresh Irish beers and fine Irish whiskies are served.

Traditional and contemporary Irish music, storytelling and dance help create a spirited social ambience, and the friendly pub staff brings Emerald Isle charm to Downtown Disney. Irish musicians entertain nightly and guests are encouraged to sing, clap and dance to the lively performances.

The restaurant’s gastronomic delights are the creation of Master Chef Kevin Dundon, one of Ireland’s best-known and most celebrated chefs. With training in Ireland, Switzerland and Canada, Dundon has cooked for celebrities and heads of state, including Queen Elizabeth. His credits also include opening an award-winning Irish hotel and restaurant, appearing in his own television series on UK Food Channel, making numerous national television appearances in the U.S., U.K. and Canada, authoring the cookbook Full On Irish and being invited to cook at the prestigious James Beard Foundation in New York.

The Raglan Road menu offers bistro-style Irish fare and fresh ingredients, all with a modern flair and Celtic creativity. Natural tastes, flavor and quality prevail in dishes such as Raglan Rack (rack of lamb on a delicate Irish stew consommé), Kevin’s Kudos (oven-roasted loin of bacon with an Irish mist glaze, served with braised cabbage and creamed potato) and Salmon of Knowledge (fresh grilled salmon with a hickory-scented maple sauce). Dinner reservations are available by calling 407/WDW-DINE.

For guests wanting food to go, Cooke’s of Dublin is a counter service location adjacent to Raglan Road where fish and chips and other quick and casual fare are available. There is also a retail location that offers Raglan Road and Irish-designed clothing and merchandise.

“We are thrilled to offer an authentic Irish pub to Downtown Disney,” said Kevin Lansberry, vice president of Downtown Disney. “The superior level of quality, authenticity and energy that this new venue brings is a perfect complement to Downtown Disney’s lineup of world-class retail, dining and entertainment.”

“Having built more than 400 Irish pubs, literally in the four corners of the world, we believe that this is our best expression yet,” said Paul Nolan, Raglan Road co-owner. “We are incredibly proud and excited to have the opportunity to bring a real slice of Ireland to Downtown Disney.”

The “real” Raglan Road is located on the south side of Dublin. It was made famous by renowned Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh in a love poem entitled, “The Dawning of the Day.” In the 1960s, Irish folk singer Luke Kelly first put the poem to music. “Raglan Road” has become a seminal Irish song and has since been covered by such artists as U2, Sinead O’Connor and Van Morrison. As a tribute to Patrick Kavanagh, a specially commissioned bronze sculpture of the poet sits outside Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant at Downtown Disney.

Raglan Road is owned and operated by Great Irish Pubs Florida, Inc., the Irish-owned company that previously created Nine Fine Irishmen at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Don’t Miss Australia’s Critically-Acclaimed And Wildly Off-Beat Romantic Dance Comedy

Don’t Miss Australia’s Critically-Acclaimed And Wildly Off-Beat Romantic Dance Comedy

On November 23, 2010 the most captivating, hilarious and exaggerated romantic comedy about the fantastical world of ballroom dancing and the fixated characters that live within it, STRICTLY BALLROOM, makes its highly-anticipated debut as an all-new Special Edition DVD.
Released by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and co-written/directed by award winning Baz Luhrmann (best known for The Red Curtain Trilogy, which includes his films Strictly Ballroom, William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge), STRICTLY BALLROOM is a wildly off-beat comedy about a male dancer (Paul Mercurio) who refuses to follow the accepted rules of ballroom dancing and creates his own style of choreography, which infuriates
the ballroom dancing establishment. Before he’s scheduled to compete in the Pan-Pacific ballroom championships, he’s forced to take up a new partner (Tara Morice), a beginner who initially seems without promise.
STRICTLY BALLROOM Special Edition DVD will retail in the US for the suggested retail price of $19.99 and include a four all-new, never-before released extended bonus features – a mini documentary and audio commentary featuring Baz Luhrmann and the journey of creating the film, interviews with real ballroom dancers and competitions and an insightful 3D gallery of images that explain the inspiration behind the film, costumes, characters, etc.
Strictly Ballroom.
STRICTLY BALLROOM was Luhrmann’s directorial debut film and was inspired by his own childhood experiences with ballroom dance classes and his mom’s career as a ballroom dance teacher. The movie itself was based on a 20-minute play that Mr. Luhrmann wrote in drama school.

“‘Strictly Ballroom’ has been an important part of my creative journey, drawing from my childhood experience in the world of ballroom dancing to the first production’s inception as a response to any form of oppression, clashed with the love of classic Hollywood storytelling,” said Luhrmann. “As this was my first film, and sold in many different territories in a variety of ways, we have spent a lot of time crafting the film in a home entertainment format that I feel is of the quality that fans deserve. “I think those who view ‘Strictly Ballroom’ for the first time will find that the back-stage story of creating my first motion picture somewhat parallels the story of the film itself. I can only hope, as in the film, that it is a win for the audience.”

When released theatrically in 1992, STRICTLY BALLROOM quickly emerged as an award winning audience favorite – it garnered at the Cannes Film Festival’s Prix de Jeunesse (“Award of the Youth – Foreign Film”) in 1992, The Toronto Film Festival’s “People’s Choice Award” in 1992, a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Picture – Comedy/Musical” (1994), 12 Australian film academy awards including best picture, and many, many more.
BONUS FEATURES:

  • An all-new mini documentary ‘Strictly Ballroom: From Stage To Screen’ created especially for the Special Edition DVD release, featuring Baz Luhrmann and his close collaborators discussing the extraordinary journey of creating the film
  • ‘Samba To Slow Fox’ – an exciting and insightful featurette, containing fascinating interviews with ballroom dancers and dance footage from various competitions
  • 3-D Gallery – an insightful series of mini featurettes with still images and Baz Luhrmann commentary that canvases inspiration for the costumes, story and much more
  • Film Audio Commentary with Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin and John O’Connell
