Enchanted Tiki Room: Classic Attraction Transforms This Summer

I’m thrilled to break the news today  that The Enchanted Tiki Room (Under New Management) at Magic Kingdom Park is already undergoing changes behind closed doors that will reshape the attraction into a version reminiscent of the original show.

Enchanted Tiki Room: Classic Attraction Transforms This Summer

The Walt Disney World attraction, originally called Tropical Serenade, has been entertaining guests since the theme park’s opening day on Oct. 1, 1971. Its winged hosts, Jose, Fritz, Pierre and Michael, led 200 other birds, tikis and flowers in an entertaining musical Polynesian revue. Tropical Serenade was reshaped into The Enchanted Tiki Room (Under New Management) in 1998, with the addition of Iago (from “Aladdin”) and Zazu (from “The Lion King”).

The attraction was based on Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, which opened at Disneyland park in 1963. Its debut marked a huge milestone in Disney history, becoming the first attraction to ever feature Audio-Animatronics figures – a breakthrough that took 10 years to develop.

The latest version of the attraction, which will be called Enchanted Tiki Room, will debut at Magic Kingdom Park later this summer. Be sure to check the Disney Parks Blog for future updates on the attraction’s progress.

Three-year-old twins Jill and Aaron Nethero of Orlando give some lovin’ to pal Lightning McQueen during Car Masters Weekend at Downtown Disney West Side May 13-15, 2011.

The family-friendly event includes a classic car show, interactive displays and life-size radio-controlled replica cars from the upcoming Disney-Pixar motion picture “Cars 2.” The cars from Radiator Springs are at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., as part of a 30-city “Agents on a Mission” tour.

Two Southern California men charged in scheme to sell fake Disney pins

Two Southern California men charged in scheme to sell fake Disney pins

This news comes to us via the associated press:

Two Southern California men have been charged with illegally importing about $2 million worth of counterfeit Disney pins from China and selling them over the Internet.

Orange County prosecutors announced the charges against 52-year-old Robert Smyrak of Anaheim and 57-year-old Larry Allred of Walnut on Thursday.

Smyrak is accused of orchestrating a scheme in which he and Allred sent legitimate, collectible Disney pins to a manufacturer in China to be replicated. When the counterfeit pins were sent back to them, they sold the pins online while passing them off as the real deal.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered the scheme in February when they intercepted a package addressed to Smyrak containing more than 150 pounds of pins.

Smyrak and Allred are scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Catch Disney on ABC Season Finales May 15

Set your DVRs, Disney will be featured on two ABC season finales, “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” this Sunday, May 15.

Part 1 of the finale of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” will start off at 7 p.m. The episode was filmed aboard the Disney Dream cruise ship, where host Tom Bergeron starts the countdown to see which $100,000 winner will take home this year’s grand prize: a trip to the Walt Disney World Resort, the Disneyland Resort, and Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, as well as a group vacation courtesy of Adventures by Disney and a cruise aboard the Disney Dream.

Next up at 8 p.m., is the season finale episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” which features the cast building a home for the Sharrock family, including their son, Patrick, who was born with brittle bone disease.

In the episode, Patrick and his parents, Cindy and Michael, were flown to Hollywood so that he could meet his own personal hero, actor Atticus Shaffer from the ABC comedy, “The Middle.” Like Patrick, Atticus also has a form of brittle bone disease. The Sharrocks also were treated to a trip to the Walt Disney World Resort while construction continued on their house.

Ask Us a Disney Question: Must-Do Attractions at Disneyland/California Adventure?

Ask Us a Disney Question: Must-Do Attractions at Disneyland/California Adventure?

This question comes from WDW-goer Melissa:

I’m a WDW veteran who will have the chance to make a two-day side trip to Disneyland this summer. I would explore from park open to close, but my husband (who is more than tolerant of my Disney-hobby) will run out of steam before I do. So I’m trying to make my must-do list! Since your site seems to be the Disney global clearing house, I’m hoping y’all can help me. What does the WDWphile have to do when given a chance to visit DL and DCA?

You have come to the right place! (And I finally get to answer one of these things!)

For Disneyland, I recommend getting there as early as possible — rope drop, if you can. You have a choice: either go to Indiana Jones and get a FastPass, then run over to Space Mountain, OR run to Space and get a FP, then run to Indy. Those two are easily the most popular attractions in the park. If you’re coming after the end of May and it’s hot out, wait a couple hours and get a Splash Mountain FP.

Maybe I’ll go through this land by land.

Frontierland: Do Thunder Mountain! End of story. And if you get a chance, get food at the Golden Horseshoe. Their chili cheese fries are not only cheap, they’re delicious!

New Orleans Square: I think you have to do Pirates AND Haunted Mansion. HM isn’t all snazzy like the one at WDW is now, but it’s the original. Fantasmic! at night.

Adventureland: Indy. For sure.

Fantasyland: it’s a small world if you’re into that. I can only handle the song so much. Matterhorn Bobsleds! Our Peter Pan isn’t as awesome as WDW’s, I’m sure, but it’s still nice. The line gets long, so that’s something to do earlier in the day.

Tomorrowland: Space Mountain! Nemo is okay if you’re not claustrophobic. Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters can be fun. And even though I have yet to experience it, Star Tours 2.0 if you’re coming after June 3. Just be aware that the lines will be long and you’ll want a FP!

And lastly, fireworks at night from Main Street.

Moving on to California Adventure. In my honest opinion, there’s not TOO much to do. I spend most of my time at Disneyland.

Hollywoodland (AKA Hollywood Pictures Backlot): Tower of Terror. I’ve been told many times that our ToT isn’t nearly as good as WDW’s, so be warned! But it’s still a fun attraction to go to. A FP may or may not be necessary. Depends on the crowd level. If it’s happening that day and you’ve got time, see Aladdin at the Hyperion Theater. Not only is it a great show, it’s a nice break.

Condor Flats: Soarin’ Over California. I highly recommend getting a FP for this.

Paradise Pier: Be sure to pick up your pass to view World of Color from the Grizzly River Run FP machine! These are not counted as a FP, so you’ll be able to get FP’s for a different attraction. Best idea: Pick up a FP for Soarin’, go around the bend, and get a viewing pass for WoC. Go to the Mission Tortilla Factory for a free tortilla! Nice free snack. Also some free sourdough bread pieces at the Boudin sourdough bread factory. Ride California Screamin’. A FP may or may not be necessary. Also ride Toy Story Midway Mania! Unfortunately, that does not have a FP queue, so your best bet is to visit this one early in the day. Little Mermaid is opening June 3, so of course I recommend that. Visit that FIRST, right after picking up a Soarin’ FP.

Hope this gives you some guidance, Melissa! Feel free to email me at [email protected] for any other Disneyland Resort questions. I just might know the answer.

Quick-Serve Dinner Favorites at Disneyland Resort

We love a leisurely dinner, but when we want one more drop on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure park or on the Matterhorn Bobsleds in Disneyland park, we look for a quick bite. But we still want delicious.

Here are our favorites, tell us yours!

If we’re dashing between parks, we go slightly out of our way for a slice of pizza from the wood-burning ovens at Napolini at Downtown Disney – easy to eat and stroll back to the parks.

Quick-Serve Dinner Favorites at Disneyland Resort

Our hands-down favorite in Disneyland park is Rancho del Zocalo in Frontierland: the Citrus Fire-grilled chicken, the chicken Caesar salad, the tres leches cake. A close second is the new fried green tomato sandwich at Hungry Bear Restaurant in Critter Country. Or the tried-and-true French Market in New Orleans Square, where we always order the Plantation Citrus Chicken, a roasted chicken breast with secret citrus and Cajun spices with smashed potatoes, veggies and a hunk of cheddar corn bread.

Award Wieners at Disney California Adventure Park

At Disney California Adventure park we’re partial to the choice of hot dogs at Award Wieners, or if we’re waiting for Soarin’ Over California, we dash into Taste Pilot’s Grill for messy ribs and fries or a fresh salad with grilled chicken breast if we’re behaving. Easy walk-around food is on the menu at Lucky Fortune Cookery, where we love the chicken with Thai coconut curry with a side of edamame to share. If we just want a sandwich for the road, Baker’s Field Bakery will wrap up a roast beef, ham or turkey.

And we admit it, we love the giant roasted turkey legs – and recommend sharing. Don Toma’s at Paradise Pier at Disney California Adventure park and Edelweiss Snacks in Fantasyland in Disneyland park are dependable stops for the massive meat fix – we always feel a little silly, but hey, indulge.

Why Stay at a Walt Disney World Owned/Operated Hotel?

Why Stay at a Walt Disney World Owned/Operated Hotel?

For many guests, the benefit of staying at a Walt Disney World owned-and-operated resort begins before arrival at the Vacation Kingdom.  And for all guests, the benefits and perks combine to make vacation magic 24 hours a day – whether at a Disney Value Resort designed for budget-minded vacationers … or at a Disney Deluxe Resort or Deluxe Villa offering lavish amenities.

Disney resort hotels are designed to provide a lot more than a pillow beneath guests’ heads.  They are created to immerse guests in a continuation of the worry-free vacation magic and adventures of the Disney parks.  Thus the hotels have themes celebrating the long ago or the far away or even the world of imagination where toys can be bigger than people.

Walt Disney World Resort offers a broad range of accommodations – 24 resorts that vary in price, allowing guests to pay for only the amenities that are important to them.  Disney Value resort guests are treated to larger-than-life theming, swimming pools and playgrounds, arcade rooms and standard amenities – and with more than 8,000 rooms at four resorts, about one-third of Disney’s hotel accommodations fall into the Value category.  Families who prefer the great outdoors can rent a campsite at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground (with nearly 800 available) and either pitch a tent or bring along an RV.  Moderate resorts, Deluxe resorts and Deluxe Villa resorts are available for guests who prefer additional amenities during their stay.

Consistent among all 24 Disney owned-and-operated hotels is staff trained in the Disney way of friendly helpfulness.  Also consistent: perks and benefits that add value to the vacation experience.  Here’s a look at some of the reasons why Disney hotels are so popular with vacationers:

TOP FOUR BENEFITS

Disney’s Magical Express – When guests bound for Disney owned-and-operated hotels are traveling via commercial airline to Orlando International Airport (OIA), they can arrange for special luggage tags that allow them to check their bags at their hometown airport, bypass baggage claim at OIA and board state-of-the-art motor coaches for complimentary transportation to the Vacation Kingdom, where their bags “magically” appear in their guestroom.  When it’s time to say good-bye, guests board motor coaches for complimentary transportation back to OIA.  An extra convenience: Guests traveling on participating airlines can check their baggage for the return flight at their Disney resort, saving time and luggage-toting at the airport.

Walt Disney World Transportation System – A Walt Disney World resort ID is the ticket for buses, monorails and boat launches that combine to connect virtually all areas of the Vacation Kingdom.  With the convenience of “door-to-door” service throughout the resort, many guests enjoy their Walt Disney World vacation without a car.

Extra Magic Hours – Each day, Disney hotel guests are offered exclusive time in a Walt Disney World theme park one hour prior to scheduled park opening or for up to three hours after park closing. The park varies from day to day. In addition, Disney water parks sometimes open one hour early for guests of Disney hotels. To take advantage of the additional time in the parks, guests must have their hotel ID plus a Magic Your Way ticket valid for the park(s) offering Extra Magic Hours.

Disney Dining Plan – Guests who combine their hotel accommodations and attractions tickets into a Magic Your Way Package are eligible to add dining for the convenience of a more-inclusive “cruise-style” vacation package.  In 2010, there are three plan choices to satisfy different budgets and appetites.  All include at least two meals and a snack for each night of a Disney resort stay.  Savings and restaurant choices vary.

More details: 407/W-DISNEY or www.disneyworld.com.

OTHER NOTABLE ATTRIBUTES, BENEFITS AND PERKS OF DISNEY RESORTS

Location, location, location – With their on-property location convenient to the theme parks, the Disney hotels are a haven for guests who seek a midday swimming break – or a siesta.  For some guests, the convenience is even more specific…

Many families with young children select accommodations in one of the “monorail resorts” – Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Resort or Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.  Reason: location near Magic Kingdom and convenient monorail transportation between the resorts and Magic Kingdom or Epcot.

Many adult couples visiting without children enjoy the proximity to Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios of Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, Disney’s Beach Club Resort and Disney’s BoardWalk – as well as the nightlife of Disney’s BoardWalk.  Walkways and water taxis connect the three resorts with the theme parks.

Theming – It’s not just a room.  In the same way that Disney’s theme parks offer an escape to a timeless land of enchantment, a walk down small-town Main Street or a peek at the future, Disney hotels offer a mix of adventures.  Disney Imagineers have created detailed, themed environments that include the romance and beauty of Africa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge to Victorian opulence at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.

Youth policy – Guests 17 and under stay at no additional charge in parents’ rooms (up to the designated capacity of the room) at Disney resort hotels.

Youth services and facilities – All Disney resort hotels offer in-room child care for ages 6 months to 12 years in partnership with independent childcare provider Kid’s Nite Out; all Disney hotels feature kiddie pools (in addition to full-size pools), many have playgrounds and some have Child Activity Centers for ages 4 to 12.

Online check-in – Guests can take care of the paperwork that normally accompanies check-in … in the comfort of their home up to 10 days before their visit. Upon arrival at their hotel, guests then stop by a special desk, show ID, sign, pick up their room keys and information packet, and begin enjoying their vacation.

Lobby concierge– One call can do it all.  Each Disney resort hotel offers a lobby concierge to arrange park tickets, dining reservations and tee times, and to provide helpful hints on setting up other activities.

Key to the World card – It’s a hotel room key and much more.  Magic Your Way theme park tickets and Disney Dining Plan entitlements can be built into the card.  For easy tracking and convenience, the card also can be used to charge meals, goods and services directly to the room, giving the guest a consolidated statement of vacation purchases.

Merchandise delivery – Purchases at select shops throughout Walt Disney World Resort can be delivered to the guest’s Disney hotel at no charge, allowing the guest to play without lugging packages around the parks.

Exemption from parking fees at the theme parks – By presenting a resort ID, guests enter parking lots for free no matter how many parks they visit during their stay.

“Bottomless” drinking mug – Quenching a vacation-long thirst is easy at Disney’s resorts.  Guests can purchase a mug themed to their resort that will become a keepsake when the holiday ends.  During their length of stay, they can continually refill the mug at designated locations at their resort.

Preferred tee times– Disney hotel guests get preferred tee times for Disney’s four championship golf courses – including two courses that are part of PGA TOUR tradition, having hosted professional events from the early 1970s to the present.

Transportation to “the tees” – Golfing guests at Disney owned-and-operated hotelshave complimentary door-to-door transportation between their resort and Walt Disney World golf facilities.

Guest information and reservations are available by calling 407/W-DISNEY or online at www.disneyworld.com.

All Ashore! Planning Your Shore Excursions

All Ashore! Planning Your Shore Excursions
If a port of call is calling your name you need to be prepared before selecting and participating in shore excursions. Here are a few things you should know:

Research which excursions you are interested in to see if they would be a good choice for you and your family. Some look very appealing in the list but when you read the details you may find that it’s more than you bargained for.

Check the activity level as some excursions are far more physical than you might think. A zip-line adventure, for example, could require extreme physical activity such as excessive climbing and navigating rough terrain. While some excursions seem like they would be once in a lifetime photo opportunities, not all of them allow cameras on the excursion.

The same excursion may have multiple listings, and as they say “the devil is in the details” read carefully and you might find that one excursion includes lunch and the other doesn’t.

Carefully read the length of the excursion and the travel time. You may not want to spend 2 hours on a bus in the desert to get to your 30-minute excursion. Weigh your options carefully and make sure the length of the actual activity you want to participate in is a long enough experience for you to feel it’s worth the price, and your time.

Arrange your excursions directly through the cruise line. Though you might be able to save a few dollars booking your excursion through a direct source as opposed to going through Disney Cruise Line you may find the cost of your decision isn’t worth the value of savings. Disney Cruise Line carefully orchestrates its excursion groups. Your group will meet with your port adventure guide at a specific location on the ship and lead you exactly where you need to go. Often transportation to the excursion site is included in your port adventure cost (again, read the descriptions carefully!) There is safety in numbers and knowing exactly where you’re going and with who saves you a great deal of time, money and stress. Not to mention the Disney Cast Member accompanying you may be a lot easier to approach than your local excursion host if you have any questions or problems.

Be mindful of the time. Regardless of attending a shore excursion or exploring on your own be sure your watch is set to ship time. The ship time will be noted by your cruise director in the evening shows, or you can ask a cast member or guest services to be sure. Time changes are frequent when cruising so you’ll want to keep your watch on ship time, not local time so you don’t miss the boat, literally! The “all aboard” time means all aboard. Don’t expect the ship to wait for you, because not even Disney magic can make that happen!

You should be informed and prepared about your shore excursions before your booking window opens. Some excursions have limited availability and are incredibly popular. Don’t squander the time you should be securing your reservation by reading about it on the website, you could miss your window of opportunity!

If you haven’t pre-booked any shore excursions and change your mind, stop by the port adventures desk when you board the ship (guest services will be able to advise you of their desk hours). These folks are well trained to inform you on exactly what each excursion entails. They often have had personal experiences or can tell you about any physical or health restrictions that could pose a problem.

If you don’t feel like a shore excursion is right for you, check the Disney Cruise Line website for the highlights at your port of call.
