Disney VoluntEARS Create a “Beary” Christmas for Children in Need

Disney VoluntEARS Create a “Beary” Christmas for Children in Need

A teddy bear is special gift. In an instant, it can become a child’s best friend. Partnering with the Salvation Army of Central Florida, Disney VolunEARS dressed more than 2,000 bears during this year’s Dress-A-Bear program.

Walt Disney World cast members have been participating in the Dress-A-Bear program for the past 14 years.  Janice Jones, Walt Disney World Costumer and Workroom Manager, has coordinated Creative Costuming’s Dress-A-Bear efforts since the program’s beginning.

“It’s a creative outlet for cast members and it provides something special for children,” said Jones.

Many of the bears receive one-of-a-kind outfits, handmade with great care by cast members on their own personal time. Using scraps of fabric and creativity, VoluntEARS craft cuddly ensembles for firemen to princesses. Buzz Lightyear, Rapunzel and the Mad Hatter were found to be “beary” fashionable this year.  All of these efforts are done in hopes of connecting with a child in need.

“To be able to share our talents with children, and to make one of kind unique clothes, is a labor of love,” said Elizabeth Lau, Creative Costuming Workroom Manager.

The special bears, along with 393 filled stockings, will be distributed by the Salvation Army of Central Florida to local children who are in need of holiday gifts.

At “Prom,” every couple has a story and no two are exactly alike. Several intersecting stories unfold at one high school as the big dance approaches; “Prom” portrays the precarious passage from high school to independence as some relationships unravel and others ignite.  For Nova Prescott (Aimee Teegarden), it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy (Thomas McDonell) who gets in the way of her perfect prom. Fellow seniors Mei (Yin Chang) and Tyler (De’Vaughn Nixon) harbor secrets, while others face all the insecurity and anticipation that surrounds one of high school’s most seminal events. There are hundreds of nights in high school, but there’s only one “Prom.” Featuring an emerging ensemble cast and a powerful soundtrack, “Prom” hits theaters April 29, 2011.

“SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark” Delays Opening Until Monday, February 7

"SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark" Delays Opening Until Monday, February 7

Lead producer Michael Cohl announced today that SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark has delayed its opening night (previously set for January 11, 2011) to Monday, February 7.  Directed by Julie Taymor and featuring a book by Julie Taymor and Glen Berger, and new music and lyrics by U2’s Bono and The Edge, SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark is now in previews at Broadway’s Foxwoods Theatre (213 West 42nd Street).   All performances prior to the new opening night will go on as planned.

In a statement, Cohl said, “The creative team is implementing truly exciting changes throughout the preview process.  Due to some unforeseeable setbacks, most notably the injury of a principal cast member, it has become clear that we need to give the team more time to fully execute their vision. SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark is an extremely ambitious undertaking, as everyone knows, and I have no intention of cutting a single corner in getting to the finish line.”

Featuring direction by Tony® Award-winner Julie Taymor (The Tempest, Across The Universe, The Lion King), music and lyrics by 22-time Grammy® Award-winners Bono and The Edge, a book co-written by Taymor and Glen Berger (Underneath The Lintel) and one of the most iconic title characters of all time, SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark is the most ambitious production ever undertaken on Broadway and finds astonishingly fresh ways to tell a story inspired by over 40 years of Marvel comic books. The show follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling. This bullied science-geek suddenly endowed with incredible powers soon learns, however, that with great power comes great responsibility as villains put both his physical strength and strength of character to the test. SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark will thrill audiences through a unique entertainment experience in ways never-before-dreamed-possible in live theater.

Tickets are priced from $67.50 – $135 for weekday performances and $67.50 – $140 for weekend performances and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com or by calling (877) 250-2929. Tickets are also available at the Foxwoods Theatre box office Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Syfy, the premier cable destination for imagination-based entertainment, is a lead media partner for SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark.

New and Updated Disney Dining Offerings on the Menu at Walt Disney World

New and Updated Disney Dining Offerings on the Menu at Walt Disney World

The New Year brings plenty of restaurant news from Walt Disney World Resort, including new menus, a new restaurant and “refreshes” of popular restaurants.  Here’s what’s in store:
  • Kouzzina by Cat Cora at Disney’s BoardWalk gets a facelift and new offerings.  There’s new exterior signage and a new Cat Cora presence in the lobby with three video monitors with images and text that flow from one to the next, showcasing the celebrity chef’s views on food, family and her culinary journey. Chef Cat’s branded product line also is for sale in the lobby, including Greek olive oil, olives, tapenades and spreads.

In the main dining room, a new iconic olive oil display sets the stage for a new “olive oil tasting experience” for all diners – with the bread, servers will offer two varieties of Greek olive oils to taste and compare, as well as kalamata olives.

New artwork, marble finishes and soft drapes warm up the room, with a new “Coranation Room” at the back of the restaurant.  The room has a more upscale décor and will offer a Chef’s Table prix fixe dining experience on weekends (still under development).

  • Another facelift is at Fulton’s Crab House at Downtown Disney.  Not only is everything on Fulton’s menu fresh, but the restaurant itself has just completed a “refresh” compliments of Matt Lorenz, 2007 winner of Bravo’s “Top Design” show.  The refresh included a complete makeover of the lobby area, a one-of-a-kind crab map so guests can identify where their dish originated, a new and improved seafood display case, and renovations to each of the individual dining rooms on board.  There’s more at www.fultonscrabhouse.com; reservations can be made at 407/WDW-DINE.
  • While Pollo Campero has 300 restaurants in 12 countries, diners at Pollo Campero at Downtown Disney Marketplace get the first look at the restaurant’s new Fresh A-Peel concept, inspired by Disney’s commitment to offer guests great-tasting, healthful options.  Fresh A-Peel offers all-natural burgers, salads and wraps, and delicious cupcakes, cookies and other sweets (the goodies are all gluten-free). The restaurant still serves the legendary grilled and fried chicken, thick yuca fries or french fries and their signature dip (a mayo-ketchup concoction), corn tortillas and sweet caramelized plantains.  Dessert features goodies from Erin McKenna’s BabyCakes NYC – cookies, cupcakes, and vegan desserts with no gluten, dairy and eggs are her signature.
  • Disney’s new cocktail menu (found in most bars and lounges) has a twist: all mixes are made from scratch, taking the art of cocktail “mixology” to a whole new level.  Many of the new cocktails are made with “better for you” ingredients such as organic spirits, fresh fruits and herbs that have been procured locally when seasonally available, and lower calorie no-sugar-added fruit purees.  The Raspberry Rain Cocktail, for instance, is made with Rain Organics Red Grape Hibiscus Vodka, Chambord, freshly muddled raspberries, lychee and fresh lemon juice.  The Superfruit Martini features Van Gogh Acai-Blueberry Vodka, pomegranate liqueur, cranberry juice, organic agave nectar and fresh lemon juice.  And plenty of cocktails come sans alcohol.

Attitude is everything…or “A Spoonful of Sugar”

Attitude is everything…or “A Spoonful of Sugar”

Much has been made of the negotiations between Disney and the services union, so I’m not going to get into that discussion very much.  However, I would like to add my own perspective to how I approach things that I don’t like but need to do for my job.

The other day I was driving to pick up my daughter from school, listening to one of my favorite Disney related playlists on my iPod – the music of the Sherman Brothers.  I was thinking at the time about how things are kind of crazy for a lot of people in their job environments.  Some people have jobs, but don’t like them; some people don’t have jobs at all, and would love to have one; some people want to improve their job but can’t because of the economy.  As for me, I like my job, and am not looking for another, but there are still things about it that I don’t like to do.  For example, I don’t like getting caught up in the political battles that erupt at my place of work; unfortunately, I have been caught up in them a little too much lately.  Anyway, I was thinking of my most recent battle that I have been working on when the following song came up on my playlist:

A Spoonful of Sugar”, as sung by Julie Andrews during the movie “Mary Poppins”.

As it started playing, I was immediately drawn to the opening words of the song:

“In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun.  Find the fun, and SNAP—the job’s a game!”

It instantly hit me how right Julie Andrews (and by extension, Disney) is in this assessment.  No job is fun 100% of the time; in fact, for most people, it probably isn’t even close.  However, that isn’t the point.  The prospect of work is that it is a necessary evil for us to be able to move on in our lives, to be able to support our families, and to be able to allow us to enjoy the time off that we get to do the things we love to do.  The quicker we find the fun in a task, even if it is just the simple satisfaction of being able to look at the end of the task to know that it is done, the more we will be able to move past it.

It continually amazes me how much in the way of life lessons Walt Disney and his creative genius have given to the world.  Now, when work isn’t going as well as it should, I immediately take five minutes to sort through my thoughts, think of a favorite Disney song, play it, and immediately my mindset is adjusted to make the task I’m working on manageable so that I can complete it.  If only all of us were able to find something to take our mind off of that difficult task we need to perform.

Thank you, Walt Disney, for the leadership you showed your team as you created the Disney empire for all of us to enjoy.

Disney World Quick Tips – Which Resort Category Is Right For You?

Disney World Quick Tips – Which Resort Category Is Right For You?

Before you read further, take a look at the clouds in the center of the photo – it’s a sorta/kinda Hidden Mickey. If you are going to be staying on site at Walt Disney World you have to make a choice concerning your resort. Except for the time frame of your visit the resort choice will probably be your first priority. There are multiple resort categories at Walt Disney World each offering different things. I won’t address RV parking or campsites because there is only one on site choice for them, Fort Wilderness. There are basically four resort categories to choose from – Value, Moderate, Deluxe, and Deluxe Villas. Which one you choose depends on what you need, expect, or want from your resort room and which one fits your budget.

Let me emphasize a couple of things; rooms at Walt Disney World resorts all receive the same level of Mousekeeping care regardless of category. They are clean and in good repair, there are just different amenity levels. If your room does not meet your standards just contact the front desk and they will resolve any issues – that is their job. Resort categories are as follows:

  1. VALUE – These resorts are the least expensive and the themes are very family friendly if not a bit over the top. Depending on which one you choose you will see uniquely shaped pools and giant statues of anything from a dalmatian to a yo-yo. Kids generally love these resorts as do many adults. If you are looking for the basics and a room in which to sleep and shower these are the resorts for you.
  2. MODERATE – These resorts have more laid back themes, a bit more luxury, a few more amenities, and at least 1 table service restaurant. The Fort Wilderness cabins are considered in the Moderate category. The pricing at the Moderates, although a bit higher than Values is still reasonable. Disney does an excellent job with landscaping and theme at these resorts.
  3. DELUXE – This is where you stay if your budget is not an issue and you actually spend some time at the resort rather than just the theme parks. They have multiple table service restaurants, suites (for a price of course), Concierge Levels of service, and magnificent grounds. If you can fit it into your budget they are worth it. Those of us who are chronologically advanced (Oldies) really enjoy the deluxe resorts.
  4. DELUXE VILLAS – These are actually Disney Vacation Club accommodations but are available for rental if not all reserved by DVC members. They are located at some of the Deluxe resorts but the available rooms consist of Studio, 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom, and Grand Villas (sleep up to 12). These are ideal if you want to prepare some meals in the room (cooking equipment progresses from a kitchenette to a full kitchen) and are traveling with a group of folks.

If you want to check out specifics you can go to the Accommodations page of the official Disney website. I hope this information gives you a good place to start in your search for a resort hotel. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!
