Disney Confidential – Gas Prices Going Up but will Disney Raise Prices too?

Disney Confidential - Gas Prices Going Up but will Disney Raise Prices too?

Hey there guys and gals Anonymouse here bringing you the best in Disney News and Gossip.

I don’t know if your in the same boat as me but filling up my gas tank this morning is really putting a dent in my wallet! With the cost going up and up and my paycheck not moving in over 3 years you have to wonder what are some people thinking???

Which makes me wonder if the raise in gas prices are going to reflect the costs at Disney and are people really going to go to the parks if they are getting reamed at the pumps.

Here is what one of the big wigs at Disney had to say:

“Historically, we have not seen that, in and of itself — separate from a downturn it might cause. In and of itself, oil prices have not dampened visitation or interest in visitation to our theme parks,” Disney Co. Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo told analysts during a conference organized by Credit Suisse.

I am no financial expert but most people have their trips paid for in advance. So the people that are coming to the parks right now have already paid for their trips. I can’t think of the last time where I went to Disney and smacked the money down on the counter or bought tickets at a ticket window.

I don’t believe we are going to see a reflection in attendance now, it will be many months from now. Chip requested me to tell you all to stop going to the parks beginning Sept 24 – Oct 2nd. I think he will be invading Walt Disney World at the time. Watch out!

Now as far as the cost of fuel at the parks since Disney raises their rates every year at the end of summer I would expect Disney to eat the additional cost till then and factor that in at that time.

Finally another big rumor going around is the cost of boat fuel. I have read in the various forums that the Disney Cruise Line will be raising their prices to reflect the sudden surge in gas prices.

Why am I not surprised?

No matter what the case the people are feeling the cost of the raise in gas prices and if you aren’t how bout you share the wealth and buy me a tank of gas.

That’s all I have for today. I want to hear what you think about the raise in gas prices. Let me know in the comment section below.

Got any good rumors?  Please email me at [email protected] or on my Facebook Page.

Character Meals: A Disney Do or Don’t?

Girls and Cinderella

With hundreds of restaurants all around Disney World property, how do you choose what’s right for you? Dining with characters is one of the most unique experiences you can have in Disney. Is there anything better than breakfast with Mickey? Well, the answer to that can be quite controversial!

Are you thinking of making an advanced dining reservation with characters? Before you do, consider these pros and cons.

The Pros

  • At character meals, you are pretty much guaranteed to see each of the characters that are at the restaurant without waiting in line! As you enjoy the food, the characters will make their rounds around the restaurant, stopping for pictures and autographs. There’s no need to stand in those daunting lines on Main Street or Fantasyland to see Pooh and Friends when you can see them at your Crystal Palace meal.
  • All of the character meals are buffet. Disney buffets include such a variety of food that even the pickiest eaters will find something they enjoy. From appetizers to entrees to desserts, there is so much to choose from. You can definitely get your money’s worth!
  • Whether you’re dining in a park or at a resort, there are plenty of options to fit your busy schedule. Not all restaurants that host character meals have them at every meal time, but no matter what time of the day you’re looking for, you’ll have several restaurants to pick from. Also, it’s not just your standard Mickey and Minnie at the meals — you can dine with Princesses, Lilo and Stitch, Winnie the Pooh, Mad Hatter, Mary Poppins, and more! There really is something for everyone.

The Cons

  • Like other special experiences in Disney, character meals can come with a high price tag, and some might even require a down payment. My best money-saving tip? Plan a character meal during lunchtime. The same food is often served during both lunch and dinner, but the lunchtime price can be significantly lower.
  • Character meals are often packed with kids, which can make for a hectic setting. If you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing meal, dining with characters are probably not be the best thing for you. Character meals can also be insanely popular and hard to reserve (think Cinderella’s Royal Table), so be sure to book as far in advance as possible (180 days is recommended).
  • While there might be a wide variety of foods available at the buffets, it’s not the best food available on property. Some people have noted that the food isn’t as fresh as it could be, that it sits under the heat lamps at the buffets for too long. Also, the options for children are often limited to pizza, french fries and macaroni and cheese. If you’re looking for looking for the best cut of steak on property, you’re not going to find it at a character meal.

Overall, I’d say that character meals in Disney World are a DO! I highly recommend that everyone try one at one point to see if it’s right for you. While the food might not be signature restaurant quality, it is always delicious and has a lot of character!

Best Things I Love About Disney – Raglan Road

Best Things I Love About Disney - Raglan Road

One place we never miss in Downtown Disney is the Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant. It’s not only a place to get an excellent authentic Irish Pub meal but if you lean towards a bit of imbibing in adult beverages it has a great pub attached. You can enjoy everything indoors or on the lovely outdoor patio.

Best Things I Love About Disney - Raglan Road

We generally visit for lunch or an early dinner but if it’s exciting and energetic entertainment you want feel welcome to hang in for the evening’s performances. It’s Irish Pub entertainment at it’s very best. The menu is varied and mid priced and they have everything from a Portobello mushroom cap burger (no meat) to beef stew. You will find something you like whether you choose to enjoy lunch or dinner.

If you want to read more about Raglan Road, they have a very well done website here that will tell you everything you want to know.

We are pretty picky about the restaurants we choose on a Wat Disney World visit and Raglan Road made our list the very first time we tried it. We have eaten there on every visit since. It is among the most consistently good restaurants, not just at Downtown Disney but in all of Walt Disney World. Take a chance and give it a try, I’m sure you will enjoy the experience. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

To Stay On or Off Property – That is the Question

To Stay On or Off Property - That is the Question

When you’re planning your Walt Disney World vacation, one of the biggest questions is whether or not to stay on property.  There are advantages to both, and many regular visitors have strong opinions either way.

I’ve stayed at and around the WDW Resort numerous times, and still find advantages and disadvantages either way, so hopefully I can help you find the right decision for your next trip!

Some Facts about Staying on Property Include:

  • Airport Transportation Included – The Magical Express
  • Resort Transportation Provided – Buses, Monorail, Walkways, and Boats
  • More Magical experience – wake up calls from Mickey and Friends
  • Package Delivery Service – Purchase anything in the Parks, and they will deliver it to your resort room for free!
  • Extra Magic Hours – Almost every day, different parks have morning and evening hours available to park resort guests ONLY!
  • Resort guests can park for free at any resort or Park on WDW Property.
  • You will pay the premium for staying on WDW Property.  Resorts are not cheap.

Some Facts about Staying off Property Include:

  • Saves money – even only a few miles off property, we payed approximately the same for a week that we paid for 5 days in a Moderate Resort
  • Space!  We loved a 3 bedroom/3 bathroom villa – we all had our own bedrooms and bathrooms, which was wonderful for a week away with a lot of people
  • Full Kitchen – We loved eating breakfast and even a few dinners at our own kitchen table
  • Feel as comfortable as if you’re at home!  We chose a place decorated in a familiar taste and style, and fully relaxed when we weren’t in the parks.
  • Discovering new gems – if you are interested in the resort feeling, there are many world-class resorts located a short distance from the Walt Disney World Resort.
  • Hotels off property offer more affordable hotel rooms and often have shuttles that run on an hourly (or so) basis to the nearby theme parks.
  • You will most likely want/need a rental car.  Make sure to factor that price and parking fees into your budgeting.  However – if you are parking at a resort, for a meal or to explore and shop, you will not be charged parking fees.

How do you decide?

If you have a strict budget and a big family, staying off property can be an excellent option.  If you have never been to the parks before, or visit infrequently, I’d recommended splurging to stay on property for the full experience.  For me?  For future race (Marathon Weekend) vacations, we’ll most likely continue to stay off property, as to not disturb our family as we leave for the race at 3 a.m.  But, our next non-race weekend trip, we will definitely stay on property again.

Whatever happened to… Figaro Fries???

Whatever happened to... Figaro Fries???

Whatever happened to Figaro Fries? You know… Disney World fries, topped with bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and drowned in ranch sauce. Figaro Fries are one of the the many secrets of the Magic Kingdom, and could only be found at PinocchioVillage Haus in Fantasyland.

Whatever happened to... Figaro Fries???

One our last trip I was surprised to find out that the Figaro Fries were removed from the menu on May 1st, 2008 and replaced with loaded fries, consisting of fries topped with cheese and bacon.

It’s just not the same.. I understand wanting to give people a choice to order healthy and all, but these things were delicious and the the lettuce and tomato made them healthy am I right??

I am unsure if they are gone for good but making them at home is not the same 🙁

Disney please them back if not for me for the children 🙂

Is Disney Brining Back Free Dining?

Is Disney Brining Back Free Dining?

I don’t know about you but both my email box and postal mail box has been filling up with Disney Offers or Pin Codes. With a Walt Disney World vacation in the works the marketing team at Disney must have my number.

One of the best promotions in my opinion is the Free Dining Offer. I was sad when I heard last year that they were discontinuing it. For my family is had the best savings even over Kids Stay and Play Free Promotion.

With the free dining no longer on the table or so I thought I was surprised when I received this following promotion in the mail.

Here are the details:

So does mean that Disney is bringing back Free Dining? There is a lot of buzz in the forums and on many sites that they are.

Personally I don’t believe they are, while it is huge savings for the customer I am sure Disney takes a big hit in the pocket to shell out such a good deal across the board.

I talked to a travel agent friend of mine over at Pixie Vacations and she told me how the week we are going to WDW this fall the Value Resorts are completely booked already and that is still 6-7 months away, and in the slow season. So I am sure Disney is doing quite well. Not to mention Disney is turning huge profits according to various news outlets.

My suggestion would be to make your reservation with a Disney Travel Agent and tell them to let you know when and if Free Dining becomes available and then they can change your ressie to reflect the additional savings.

That is my two cents so lets hope I am wrong and there will be Free Dining for everyone!

To Wear Mouse Ears, Or Not to Wear Mouse Ears

To Wear Mouse Ears, Or Not to Wear Mouse Ears

The Author in his YOAMD Mouse Ear Hat

Picture yourself getting ready to leave your home in the morning. It’s not a workday, so you decide to dress more casual than usual. Jeans. A sweatshirt. A Mouse Ear hat. You open your door and step out into the world to run your errands and to do your shopping.

What’s wrong with this scenario?

Well, for me, I don’t wear sweatshirts. But for most normal people, it would be the wearing of a Mouse Ear hat in public! Not many have done this, but I’m determined to work up the courage some day, just to see what reactions I would get. Until then, I guess we can all agree that wearing a Mouse Ear hat in public is not a good idea.

But what about during your Walt Disney Vacation?

To Wear Mouse Ears, Or Not to Wear Mouse Ears

Two Mouse Ear Princesses

We often see little children dressed up as Princesses or Pirates. We see tween patrons of the Bibbidi-Bobbidi Boutique walking around proudly showing off their Glam Looks. And we even see teenagers sporting a loud character hat or two. But what about the over 30 crowd? Over 40? How about over 50 and beyond? Can we get away with the ultimate silliness: Wearing a Mouse Ear hat at the Parks?

YES!

It’s been said that a Disney Park is the only place in the World wear a grown man can walk down the center of the street wearing Mouse Ears and not get a second look. Why is this? Because it’s the Happiest Place on Earth, not Wallstreet! Not only is that man with the Mouse Ear hat on vacation, but so is everyone else. The whole point of being there is to relax and have fun. Those who are uptight usually don’t visit Disney Parks, and thank goodness!

To Wear Mouse Ears, Or Not to Wear Mouse Ears

Here’s a true story: I was in The Magic Kingdom (WDW) in 2006. I was standing outside a shop waiting for my wife wearing, not a Mouse Ear hat, but a Goofy hat! I had only seen small boys wearing this hat previously. I noticed a man who was upset because his family was taking so long in the store. You know the type – he didn’t want to go to Disney to begin with! He stomped outside in anger and came face to face with… a guy his age wearing a Goofy hat. He stopped dead in his tracks. I smiled. He looked stunned at first, but then he smiled. Finally he said: “Nice hat!” and walked away smiling.

So is it OK to wear a Mouse Ear hat, or any other silly hat, at a Disney Park?

I’ve had nothing but good experiences while wearing silly things at the Disney Parks. Cast Members get a kick out of seeing me in my Goofy hat. Every one of them mentions it! Every little child I pass excitedly points me out to his or her parents, who also get a good laugh out of it.

Another true story: I was leaving The Magic Kingdom one evening and passing by a Security Guard. I was wearing, not only my Goofy hat, but also my Incredibles t-shirt. The SG took one look at me and said: “You’re looking incredibly goofy today!” Get it? We both had a laugh, and I’m sure it made a nice ending to both our days!

And don’t forget that any Disney hat will be a great treasure to add to your collectables!

So do you go to the Disney Parks to have fun? Want to have even more fun? Then buy a Mouse Ear hat (or any funny Disney hat) and wear it proudly! Then leave a comment and tell us about your fun experiences.

DVD Review: Tales from Earthsea

DVD Review: Tales from Earthsea

Disney and Studio Ghibli are bringing Gorō Miyazaki’s epic film “Tales from Earthsea” to DVD on March 8, 2011. This story is based on the “Earthsea” fantasy book series by Ursula K. Le Guin.

This is the first film adaptation of any part of the the “Earthsea” series, as previously, the author denied requests from others to adapt her work to the big screen. Hayao Miyazaki received approval to create the anime version after winning an Oscar for “Spirited Away,” but he was engaged on another project at the time. Therefore, his son stepped in and took charge of bringing this masterpiece to life.

The film was originally released in Japan in 2006 and had a limited release in the United States in August 2010. Now in March 2011, US families will be able to bring the magic home to share with others and enjoy again and again.

This tale revolves around the world of Earthsea which is experiencing troublesome events and dark times due to an imbalance man has created in the world. In the world of Earthsea, magic is still alive and respected, but it’s focus on nature and the communion of man with all things in nature has been lost. We won’t tell you anymore because we don’t want to give it away, but basically, our heroes have to fight to regain the balance.

The striking visual style and sweeping orchestral soundtrack work in unison to provide an engaging experience for the viewer. It is as if you could feel the wind and smell the earth just as the characters do. It is truly a novel experience as many films leave you with a feeling of watching from a third party view rather than full immersion. And this film is not even in 3D!

To some the story may seem a little confusing, especially during the first half of the movie. This may also make it feel a little slow, but stick with it. As you get into the film, the history behind the characters is revealed and the meanings of strange happenings becomes evident. You will really get pulled in about halfway through the story.

Just a heads up for the parents out there. There are a few violent scenes in the movie depicting the chaos the imbalance has caused and during the climax towards the end. Based on this and the speed of the movie and complexity of the story, we would not recommend this for younger viewers. Older children and adults are more likely to enjoy this film and appreciate the dramatic storytelling.

The DVD also includes some bonus features including a way to further explore the lands of Earthsea by selecting the Enter the Lands option or to learn more about the origins of the film through the Behind the Studio option. And if you feel up to a challenge, test your expertise by taking the Studio Ghibli Trivia Challenge!

Overall, this is a great film and a wonderful addition to your Disney and Studio Ghibli film library. We will admit that the story and the scenery is beautiful, but at first the story really did not grab us. However, we stuck it and are so glad that we did. We were rewarded with a fantastic story and an incredible movie experience which further renewed our love of Studio Ghibli projects. Make sure to check this on out on March 8, 2011!

Oldies But Goodies – World Showcase, More Than A Bunch Of Buildings Part 1

Oldies But Goodies - World Showcase, More Than A Bunch Of Buildings Part 1

When we tour the World Showcase at Epcot, fellow Oldies, we are so impressed by the beauty of the surroundings and the majesty of the buildings that we tend to think that’s what it is. There is so much more in the World Showcase that when you stop to consider the scope of the place it’s mind boggling. Today I’ll cover the current entertainment opportunities and next week I’ll deal with what is beyond the facades of the various buildings.

There is some type of  “street entertainment” or diversion at virtually every pavilion and it is really only in the last few visits to Walt Disney World that I have begun to appreciate them (I think that as we get older we appreciate these things even more). I’ll start at the Mexico Pavilion and go clockwise around the World Showcase. Please remember that there is so much, I may miss one or two:

  • Mexico – Mariachi Cobre, a wonderful group of Mariachi musicians who perform with all of the energy that those who are familiar with this music have come to expect.
  • China – Don’t miss the young Chinese acrobats, they are absolutely spectacular!!
  • Germany – Oktoberfest Musikanten recreates Oktoberfest excitement several times each evening at the Biergarten dinner buffet. It’s worth the price of dinner for this very fun experience.
  • Italy – There are two opportunities here, Sergio is a very talented juggler who puts on a twenty minute show and the Ziti Sisters put on a comedy show and they manage to involve you/us the audience. Lots of fun!
  • American Adventure – There is truly good stuff happening here. The Spirit of America Fife & Drum Corps (pictured above) puts on several inspiring shows each day and the Voices of Liberty, a wonderful a capella singing group entertains inside the building prior to the stage show.
  • Japan – Talk about high energy, Matsuriza, a traditional Japanese Taiko Drummer group puts on amazing demonstrations of their talent while Miyuki, a “candy artist” with incredible abilities creates art out of candy and gives her creations to kids in the audience.
  • Morocco – Inside Restaurant Marrakesh, during lunch and dinner there is a traditional Moroccan music ensemble playing and during the show there is also a belly dancer (G-rated). Outside, a group called MoRockin brings a very contemporary flair to the traditional music.
  • France – In front of Les Chefs de France there is an performance that is a bit difficult to describe. It’s a little bit of juggling, a lot of balancing, and tons of fun. It’s called Serveur Amusant (comic waiter), don’t miss it. For you Ratatouille fans Remy makes appearances at lunch and very early in the dinner hour six days a week.
  • United KingdomLots of opportunity here. The World Showcase Players perform and here again is your opportunity for fame, audience participation. The Hat Lady at the Rose and Crown pub will make you think you are in a pub in the UK, she’s a very exciting entertainer. Finally, The British Invasion revives a lot of the sixties British Rock that we Oldies really enjoy. This is a definite do not miss for Oldies (both the music and US!!).
  • Canada – Off Kilter is one of the favorites in the World Showcase. They play progressive Celtic music with an amazing flair. Yes – they do wear kilts!! This is one of the very best!!

See, I told you there was a lot of stuff in the World Showcase. We, as Oldies, are in a unique position to take our time and enjoy all of it as we tour the World Showcase. There is a website that maintains current days and times of performances and is updated each Friday or Saturday covering the following Sunday through Saturday. You can find Steve Soares website by clicking here. There is a lot of information there covering all of Walt Disney World. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Can’t Decide Which Disney Resort to Stay At? Choose Both!

Can’t Decide Which Disney Resort to Stay At? Choose Both!Choosing where you will be staying on your vacation to Walt Disney World can be challenging: there are so many great choices! And if you are trying to keep to a budget then choosing can be even more difficult as you weigh the pros and cons of each resort. So what if, after all that, you actually end up choosing TWO hotels to stay in while at Disney World?

I know, you’re thinking “Why would anyone do that? Sounds like a lot of trouble on a vacation!”

Well the thing is, many people DO choose to stay at more than one resort on their Disney vacation, and there are a number of reasons why this might occur. To start, I know that many folks do “split stays” at Disney, especially when visiting during busier times of the year. And some people end up staying at more then one hotel if they decide to add on days to the beginning or end of their trip later in the planning process. Then there are the people that, while they may be staying at a moderate or deluxe hotel for the majority of their stay, will have a late arrival at Walt Disney World, and just want a place to sleep for that first night at a minimal cost. Others take this a step further and stay at a Value Resort for part of their stay and then “upgrade” themselves to a Deluxe Resort for the second part of the stay. And lastly, some vacationers just love so many of the resorts that they can’t narrow it down to one! 🙂

Whatever the reason, split-stays are more common than you might think. As a matter of fact, on our last Disney trip, we had a split stay in two different Disney properties. As this was our 3rd trip during the uber-busy week between Christmas and New Years, this wasn’t the first time that we ended up switching resorts, so we kind of expected that to be the outcome.

And honestly, it has never been a problem because Disney just makes the process so darned easy. “How easy?” you may ask? Let me share just how easy….

What is already a pretty painless process can be even easier if you take advantage of the chance to check-in online before you arrive. Doing this will make the check-in process literally take a few minutes. The thing is, remember to do it for both resorts in advance. 🙂

On the day of your “switch”, have your bags packed and ready to go before you leave for the parks. You can either bring them down to bell services yourselves, or request that they pick up your bags in your room (if you do this, someone needs to wait there for them). Either way, inform bell services where your bags should be sent and then you’re off to the parks. (Don’t forget to tip them for their help!)

Later that day, when you are ready for a break in the afternoon, or at the end of the day, go to your new resort, quickly check-in, and stop by bell services at your new resort to either retrieve your bags or have them brought to the room (please again, remember to tip for the assistance!).

All that’s left is to enjoy your second resort.

Now there are a few things that you should be aware of:

First, this clearly applies only to Disney resort-to-resort changes: obviously you would have to do all the “changing” yourself if you are going from non-Disney to Disney.

Second, keep in mind that this is technically TWO reservations. So if you have the Dining Plan added, your credits from resort #1 would expire at midnight of the day you check out of resort #1….not at midnight of your last day of vacation. The credits don’t get “added together”, they are 2 completely separate Dining Plans. So watch those snack credits carefully, to make sure you don’t lose them!

And I would say that this process will be easiest if you don’t “spread out” too much when you unpack. For some, that is a problem, but for my family of 3 adults (and especially with a short trip), it’s really no biggie: we can be packed up within minutes, making this a pretty stress-less process.

Disney really makes the process of moving from one resort to another so easy, it really gives you a great solution to the problem of deciding between two resorts: choose BOTH! And then relax, knowing that Disney will take care of the rest!
