Walt Disney said “…it was all started by a mouse.” and for me it all started with the love Disney and the great man who started not with mouse, as he says; but with a rabbit and big dreams and for me Sorcerer Radio.

In February 2008 I made my first Cooking with Mickey video for Ratatouille, the recipe that you see in Disney/Pixar’s movie, Ratatouille. It became a hit with the Sorcerer Radio Community (where I am now a DJ for two radio shows and a host on WDW After Dark – featuring “The Disney Drink Special”) and I decided to make more. As a Disney fan, food is the one thing that everyone has in common! You must eat to live and most people enjoy eating, especially Disney food since there is such a variety of restaurants to choose from and something for everyone. Since the videos were well received, I had restaurant experience, I had been taking cooking lessons at Viking Cooking School and wanted to share more than videos; I decided to create CookingwithMickey.info. A site where you could not only find my videos that are hosted on YouTube, but you could find other Disney dining information there are well; like Disney dining reviews, recipes, news and even trip reports. I also wanted to share more than just Disney food; so I added cooking and travel tips, personal recipes and travel information.

Starting this year I decided to add contributors to Cooking with Mickey. On each Monday I post a new article from my contributors. The first Monday is “ADD (Average Disney Dude) Top 5” by Aljon Go (who as you know also contributes to Chip and Co.) sharing his top 5 from the perspective of your everyday average Joe. On the second Monday is “Little Chef Disney Creations” by Beth Doda. She is a mom of 3 little ones and creates Disney-inspired dishes with them at home. She has been so kind as to share those creations with my viewers. The third Monday is a collaborative effort between J.B. Conway, better known as Mouse of Zen and John Knell of Knell Studios on “Edible Prose”. They work together using my restaurant photographs to create haiku set to amazing graphic artistry. Last, but not least, on the fourth Monday is Natalie Henley (a recent addition to the Chip and Co. writing team) with “Disney Magic and Kids”, sharing everything from funny stories of dining out with her adorable son to tips on ways to keep kids occupied while dining in what seems to be less-than-entertaining-to-kids restaurants.

So whether you are looking for the recipe for the Konk Cooler found at Castaway Cay, the video on how to make Le Cellier’s Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup, tips on storing lettuce so it lasts longer, D23 news or Disney vacation travel deals… Cooking with Mickey has it all. I hope you will stop by to check out the site, “Follow” me on Twitter, “Like” the Facebook page and “Subscribe” to my YouTube channel.

In the words of Wolfgang Puck “Live, Love, Eat”!

Kristen, creator of CookingwithMickey.info, is a foodie who has traveled extensively & dined at 80% of the Walt Disney World TS restaurants; including the Five Diamond Award winning restaurant Victoria and Albert’s & the members-only exclusive Club 33. She’s host of Cooking with Mickey videos, DJ for Sorcerer Radio, host of The Disney Foodie on the Character Breakfast, travel specialist & writer. She also enjoys photography & hockey. C-3PO Pilots Star Tours 2 – I Have a Good Feeling About This!

C-3PO Pilots Star Tours 2 - I Have a Good Feeling About This!

More details on the re-tooled Star Tours: The Adventures Continue attraction have surfaced today. The cue line seems to stay true to the original attraction. The legendary duo of R2-D2 and C-3PO greet travelers at the busy spaceport while a Starspeeder 1000 prepares for flight. According to the Disney press release, Anthony Daniels, the voice of C-3PO and the only actor to appear in every theatrical chapter of the Star Wars Saga, reprises his role as the golden protocol droid. Daniels worked with Walt Disney Imagineering to record new dialogue for the attraction. From there, riders will take off to one of many destinations the ice planet Hoth, Wookie homeworld Kashyyyk, the lush world of Naboo or the desert planet of Tatooine .

Passengers will be completely immersed in the Star Wars universe with the new flight simulator sequences, classic Star Wars film score by John Williams and the 3D special effects done by Walt Disney Imagineering, Lucasfilm and Industrial Light and Magic. Also new is the fact that riders will be able to experience one of 50 different story combinations while running into such characters as Boba Fett the bounty hunter, Jedi Master Yoda, Princess Leia, Skytroopers, Admiral Ackbar, and the evil Darth Vader.

The  new 3-D attraction is set to open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park on May 20, 2011 and at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, Calif., on June 3, 2011.

Club Penguin and its players celebrate Earth Day

Club Penguin and its players celebrate Earth Day

Fans of Club Penguin can learn how to protect their planet and show support for all its citizens this Earth Day just by playing in the snow-covered virtual world.

As part of its ongoing commitment to creating safe places around the world and protecting the earth, Disney Online Studios, which produces Club Penguin, is donating an additional $100,000 of its annual multi-million dollar giving budget to conserve wetlands and protect endangered species. For its annual Earth Day party, Club Penguin will also launch a series of new activities designed to educate and empower its players to help protect the earth and the living creatures that call it home.

From April 20 through 27, 2011 members can use the virtual coins they earn playing games on Club Penguin to purchase Earth Day-themed costumes for their penguin avatars. Players will also be able to visit areas of the virtual world that have been redesigned to look like the natural habitat of some endangered species, and learn more about those species and what threatens their survival.

“Children have such an innate curiosity, and a desire to protect the planet and all its citizens, and we think this is a great way to educate them and encourage them to take action in their own way,” says Lane Merrifield, one of Club Penguin’s co-founders and executive vice president of Disney Online Studios.

Club Penguin is one of the largest virtual worlds for children with a reputation for providing fun for kids and peace of mind for parents. Millions of children and families in nearly every country in the world play Club Penguin in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Club Penguin uses word filters and live moderators to monitor chat and activity on the site and work to prevent the sharing of inappropriate or personally identifiable information.

The Earth Day party is just one example of Club Penguin’s ongoing efforts to empower its players to help change the world. A portion of the organization’s net profits supports organizations working to improve the lives of children and families around the globe. Each December, the Coins For Change online giving campaign lets players vote on where some of those donations will go.

In recent years, the kids who play Club Penguin have helped more than two million people get medical care, enabled 200,000 children to go to school and helped protect more than a dozen endangered species and their habitats. In addition, last fall, players submitted their drawings for the opportunity to have their art featured in a mural on the wall of a school in Haiti that donations from Disney Online Studios and Club Penguin helped rebuild.

“From dressing up and role playing during the Earth Day party to sharing their ideas on how to help those affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, our players never cease to amaze us with their passion for changing the world, and we really want to nurture that passion,” says Merrifield.

The $100,000 donation this Earth Day will support:

  • Projects to preserve wetland habitat and reduce overfishing in China – conducted by RARE
  • Projects to conserve and protect the African Painted Dog and the Snow Leopard – conducted through the Wildlife Conservation Network

Gathering and ‘Tweet up’ of Princess Proportions on Tap on ‘Royal Wedding Day’ at Walt Disney World Resort

Gathering and ‘Tweet up’ of Princess Proportions on Tap on ‘Royal Wedding Day’ at Walt Disney World Resort

In celebration of the long-awaited Royal Wedding, Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings & Honeymoons will host its first-ever “Tweet Up” and a viewing party on April 29, 2011, from 4-8 a.m. at Disney’s Wedding Pavilion at Walt Disney World Resort.

The first 250 people who responded to a “tweet up” invitation have already secured their seats in Disney’s Wedding Pavilion.

“Everyone remembers where they watched the last royal wedding,” said Korri McFann, marketing director, Disney’s Fairytale Weddings & Honeymoons. “April 29 is another royal occasion and we are thrilled to offer such a special viewing to help create lasting memories for moms, daughters, families and friends.”

Guests are invited to dress up in “princess or prince attire” — or come in their pj’s — for the early-hour gathering to watch, via live television, the royal couple tie the knot. Deemed as the biggest royal wedding since Princess Diana and Prince Charles, the exchange of vows between Kate Middleton and Prince William will take place at Westminster Abbey with the Archbishop of Canterbury officiating.

In addition to the viewing, the occasion at Disney’s Wedding Pavilion will include:

  • An English-inspired breakfast will be served to honor the occasion.
  • Cinderella’s Coach, which was crafted by Bennington Carriages — coach maker for the British Monarchy — will be available as a backdrop for pictures.
  • Newly-released Disney Fairy Tale Weddings Jewels and tiaras, as well as Disney Princess-inspired wedding gowns from Disney Fairy Tale Weddings by Alfred Angelo will be showcased.
  • There’ll be a few entertainment surprises in store.

[UPDATE (4/20/2011): The response to the “Tweet Up” mentioned below was so astounding — the 250 RSVPs for which the event was originally planned poured in during a period of about two hours — that Fairy Tale Weddings event organizers convened, broadened the plan for the viewing party, and re-opened the invitation … and then closed it again when a second wave of RSVPs poured in Tuesday, April 19, 2011. The number of guests expected for the event is now in excess of 500.]

The summer issue of Disney twenty-three magazine hits stands May 3, filled with features that will take readers from the depths of the sea to the edges of outer space. In the swashbuckling cover story on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, director Rob Marshall and actors Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane and Richard Griffiths take D23: The Official Disney Fan Club into the action-packed world of the highly anticipated film.

The piece gives readers the inside scoop on Captain Jack Sparrow’s latest adventure with an eight-page spread of gorgeous images from the film and fascinating nuggets from the set. Readers will discover what select cast and crew have to say about Johnny Depp returning to his iconic role; learn what inspired the screenwriting team behind the earlier Pirates films as they reunited to lace together legends of the fearsome Blackbeard, the Fountain of Youth and sirens of the sea; and uncover why director Rob Marshall says of the 106 days of shooting: “You’re undergoing your own adventure as you’re filming one.”

Disney twenty-three’s summer issue also includes an exclusive interview with George Lucas, the force behind Star Wars and Indiana Jones, discussing his participation in the various park attractions inspired by his films. Readers can expect to be immersed in the creative process as Disney twenty-three reveals multiple concepts for rides that were never made. More specifically, readers will be privy to the unique brainstorm that brewed the new Star Tours ride and learn about a distinctive new twist in the experience.

In “What a MARVELous World!,” Stan Lee talks about his excitement to be working with Disney Imagineers. “It’s great for Marvel to have access to Disney’s brains, because they’re pretty smart, and it’s great for Disney to have all these characters, with their built-in audience. It’s one of the wisest things that either company could have done.” Readers will also find a comprehensive look at Stan’s history that might well serve as a Marvel 101 class. The article’s glimpse into future plans for this historic team-up shows why Disney, Marvel and fans alike are looking forward to super hero-sized results.

Just in time for summer road trips, John Lasseter introduces readers to Cars 2, in which Lightning McQueen, Mater, and a whole fleet of new characters race across the country on an international adventure. In true Pixar fashion, Cars 2 will zoom to the big screen alongside the brand new animated short Hawaiian Vacation featuring characters from the Toy Story films. This issue also celebrates Walt Disney’s own motor mania with a look back at some of Walt’s personal cars as well as a few favorites that have played special roles in Disney history.

There’s much more in the summer issue of Disney twenty-three, including:

  • THAT WILLY NILLY SILLY NEW BEAR: Voice actor extraordinaire Jim Cummings is a natural when it comes to voicing Winnie the Pooh. He’s been doing it ever since he was a kid and is adding to his resume with the upcoming Winnie the Pooh movie.
  • JUSTICE FOR ALL: Disney Legend Bill Justice, who passed away in February, left a big imprint at Disney working on projects ranging from Bambi and Mary Poppins to the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland.
  • ARIEL’S TRIUMPHANT RETURN: Legendary Disney animators Glen Keane, Mark Henn and Andreas Deja see their characters come to life in 3D at The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, coming soon to Disney California Adventure.
  • PASSING THE TIKI TORCH: From the Enchanted Tiki Room to the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean films, the work of two laid-back Southern California craftsmen is carved into Disney lore.
  • A WALK WITH WALT 1940: WISHING UPON A STAR: The first year of the new decade saw creative and celebrated breakthroughs, including the release of Fantasia. But there were storm clouds on the horizon.
  • D SOCIETY: Disney President and CEO Bob Iger takes to the skies to photograph the Disney Dream, John Stamos and the Massey brothers get onboard, and Super Bowl champ Aaron Rodgers visits Walt Disney World.
  • PHOTOfiles: Disney twenty-three’s 10th installment of rare pictures from the Disney Photo Library shows Walt embracing Audio-Animatronics® at the Enchanted Tiki Room, Sean Connery “bonding” with Autopia, and Daryl Hannah making a big splash!
  • GOOD MOUSEKEEPING: Now in each issue of Disney twenty-three, this new column features classic Disney comics originally published in the 1930s and early 1940s in Good Housekeeping magazine. This month’s featured cartoon is from July 1937 and portrays the trio that sailed off in a wooden shoe: Wynken, Blynken and Nod.

And there’s even more for Disney fans to explore. As with every issue of Disney twenty-three, Members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club receive an added bonus. This issue comes with one of two scented Cars 2 air fresheners featuring either racing star Lightning McQueen or his devoted best pal Mater. These limited-edition gifts will be sent only to members. Women Runners To Be Celebrated Amid Fairy Wings and Pixie Dust at Disney’s New Tinker Bell Race

Women Runners To Be Celebrated Amid Fairy Wings and Pixie Dust at Disney’s New Tinker Bell Race

The Tinker Bell Half Marathon, hosted by the City of Anaheim and Disneyland Resort, will take runners on a 13.1-mile trek through the Disneyland and Disney California Adventure theme parks and pass by several City of Anaheim landmarks. The course will be filled with music, entertainment, Disney characters, runners in colorful Tinker Bell costumes and, of course, pixie dust, and will finish at Disneyland. Runners will receive a new Tinker Bell “wings’’ medal.

“We’re proud to be the home of the inaugural Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend,’’ said Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait. “It is events like this that give a city heart and character. I’m happy to welcome the thousands of runners and their friends and families to Anaheim.’’

As with the four current runDisney signature events, the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend, Jan. 27-29, 2012, will feature a variety of activities, including the Neverland Family Fun Run 5K. There will also be a health and fitness expo featuring the latest running merchandise, products, apparel and guest speakers – all tailored for women – creating a weekend of camaraderie and wellness, plus a pinch of Tinker Bell’s trademark sassiness and sense of adventure.

“ ‘Women runners’ and ‘half marathons’ are part of a growing and popular trend within the running world – and that’s evident by the rapid success of our Princess Half Marathon at Walt Disney World,’’ said Kathleen Duran, Disney Sports Endurance Manager. “This new Tinker Bell event at Disneyland embraces that trend and provides thousands of women another unique opportunity to spread their fairy wings and showcase women’s fitness, health and an active lifestyle in a relaxed, fun and family vacation environment.’’

Women Runners To Be Celebrated Amid Fairy Wings and Pixie Dust at Disney’s New Tinker Bell Race

Megyn Price, star of the hit CBS sitcom Rules of Engagement, attended the announcement along with Disney California Adventure and Guest Services Vice President Mary Niven and Mayor Tom Tait. Price was the first person to sign up to run the inaugural race.

“The idea of bringing my family to Disney and running a half marathon with thousands of other women was really appealing for me,” said Price. “Being active and healthy is important for women, so I think the whole weekend is going to be a fun and unique experience for me and my family.”

With the inaugural Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend, Disneyland Resort will be hosting two of runDisney’s five signature events. Disneyland currently hosts the Disneyland Half Marathon during Labor Day Weekend (Sept. 2-4 in 2011). In all, more than 10,000 runners are expected to participate in the inaugural Tinker Bell event, making it one of the nation’s largest endurance races geared toward women.

Registration for the first-ever Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend is open. Registration is currently $120 for the half marathon ($130 after June 12, 2011, and $140 after Sept. 11, 2011)and $50 for the 5K event. A portion of the registration fees will be donated to the Anaheim Community Foundation. Runners can register for the Tinker Bell event and any other runDisney race online at rundisney.com.

Wednesday with Walt: The Joy of Laughter

Wednesday with Walt: The Joy of Laughter

It’s fun to find out information about our roots, isn’t it? Tracing back our ancestry, meeting long lost relatives, or actually visiting the places where our parents grew up are all great ways to learn about ourselves. Walt Disney had a curiosity and passion for his roots as well. In fact, he actually went to see the home where his grandparents lived in Canada, and where his father grew up. He really wanted to go and, although Lillian wasn’t really into that sort of thing, he drug her along. I am sure that visit brought her years of enjoyment later and I’ll let Walt tell you why in his own words (who better?).

“I finally made it (to the old homestead). I took Mrs. Disney along and – she’s not too interested in ancestors and things, you know – we got up there, and she really fell in love with the town of Goderich. It was a beautiful town, and she was quite happy about it. But I wanted to find the homestead where my grandfather went out and cut the trees down and pulled the rocks apart, where my father was born. So they gave me directions, and everybody was trying to be helpful and everything. Mrs. Disney reluctantly went along. And I found this old place and I said, ‘This is it…there.’ It was really deserted. There were cows running through the house and chickens around and I had my camera, and I got out and photographed that thing from every angle. When I got through, I found out I had photographed the wrong homestead. [Walt laughs.] Ever since, Mrs. Disney has never forgot. She tells that to everybody. About when Walt went up to Canada and he photographed the wrong homestead.”

I don’t know if this sounds familiar to you, but I can see myself doing that same exact thing! HA!

Walt told that story during his interview with Fletcher Markle for Telescope which aired on September 25, 1963. The fact that Walt himself told the story, and not someone else, says to me that he was doing alright. With all the pressures of running a company, keeping people paid, making great movies, developing the first ever theme park like Disneyland, raising two daughters, nurturing new ideas every moment; he still didn’t take himself too seriously. And, you know what they say, “you have to be able to laugh at yourself — before you can laugh at someone else!” (just kidding)  But really we all have to be able to laugh at ourselves sometimes.

The advantage of laughing at ourselves is that we may just brighten someone else’s day through a little self-deprecating humor. I am sure that Lillian never forgot that day, and it may have been one of her fondest memories of their time spent together. Who knows?

Live a little! Laugh a little! If you don’t like laughing at yourself, feel free to laugh at me…I am sure I have done something to deserve it!
