Miss America Contestants Visit Walt Disney World Resort

Miss America Contestants Visit Walt Disney World Resort

Look who stopped by Magic Kingdom Park. All 53 contestants for the title of Miss America 2012 – and current Miss America Teresa Scanlan – continued a Walt Disney World Resort tradition of walking down Main Street, U.S.A., and making some magical memories.

Representing fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, the women were greeted by Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Cinderella, Belle, Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto. After group photos at Cinderella Castle, the women broke up into smaller groups to see the rest of Magic Kingdom Park and later in the day, visited Disney’s Hollywood Studios to ride the new 3-D “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue.” Here’s a look at some of the fun.

The 53 Miss America 2012 contestants also recorded interviews that are scheduled to appear in the pageant’s live telecast on ABC, Saturday, January 14.

As the world’s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women and one of the nation’s leading achievement programs, the Miss America Organization last year made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. The 53 Miss America 2012 contestants are in the Orlando area to attend the annual Miss America Outstanding Teen Competition.

Fantasyland Expansion Timeline Update!

Fantasyland Expansion Timeline Update!

We all know Fantasyland is expanding and we’re anxious to start our countdown clocks for the new experiences…if only we knew when they were going to open!

Announcements were made at the D23 expo and a better idea of the timeline is out of the bag. Here are the projected completion dates/openings for the new and improved Fantasyland!

  • Early 2012: Half of Storybook circus with Double Dumbo, Great Goofini coaster, Fantasyland Train Station and Casey Jr.
  • Late 2012: Under the Sea~Journey of the Little Mermaid ride, Be Our Guest Restaurant, Beauty and the Beast Village, Belle meet-and-greet, Castle wall
  • Early 2013: Remaining half of Storybook Circus with Pete’s Silly Slideshow
  • Late 2013: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train roller coaster

We have all been waiting to see what the new Fantasyland expansion has to bring, but we must be patient. These things take time and this is the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history. If you thought your feet were tired with the current Magic Kingdom offerings, gear up for the new attractions to come!

Storybook Circus:

  • The famous Casey Jr. Circus Train has brought the 1930’s/40’s circus to town complete with Dumbo, Pete’s Silly Slideshow and The Great Donaldo and of course no circus would be complete without a spot to stock up on souvenirs!
  • The greatest idea to happen to the Dumbo ride since the invention of the Dumbo ride…double the Dumbo and add air conditioning. The new “Big Top” will feature interactive queue’s, twice as much ride and magical air conditioning under the “Big Top” while you wait.
  • The Great Goofini roller coaster took Goofy’s Barnstormer from Wise-Acre Farms and updated him to a circus extravaganza fit for the “Big Top”.
  • Pete’s Silly Slideshow is bringing together characters from all over the world, in circus theme of course! The Great Donaldo is one of the characters we know about, Donald Duck as a famous snake charmer from the Far East…I wonder who else will make an appearance?

Castle Wall:

  • A new Cinderella Castle wall will be near the existing carousel and will transition from the castle courtyard to the Fantasyland forest. Work your way through the winding forest complete with waterways and find new adventures along the way.
  • The Little Mermaid-Ride through Ariel’s Undersea Adventures on her new attraction and experience life “Unda Da’ Sea!” then approach Prince Eric’s castle. How would you go about approaching a castle surrounded by water? Lucky for you, “The tide has gone out, but some tide pools will linger amidst that castle caverns that form the foundation of the castle” where the interactive queue will reside. Ariel returns to her Grotto to meet-and-greet in her natural environment.
  • Beast’s Castle is home to Be Our Guest (a new restaurant) as well as an elaborate meet-and-greet with Belle, featuring everyone’s favorite candlestick-Lumiere!
  • The fairest of them all is not to be forgotten, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train roller coaster will suit the daring with a thrill level above the new Great Goofini but not as big as Big Thunder Mountain. What makes this ride so fantastic? The ride vehicles! The vehicles in this coaster will maneuver off the track and swivel left and right independently of the track, so the ride will never be the same twice.

As you can see the imagineers are hard at work making an even better Fantasyland, we’ll continue to keep you update as the timeline progresses and more information is available. What are you most looking forward to?

Top Five Reasons I’m a Disney World Nerd.

Top Five Reasons I'm a Disney World Nerd.

Are you like me? Do you sometimes find yourself hiding the fact that you’re a Disney nerd? Do you have to remind yourself that wearing more than one article of Disney clothing at a time is a bad idea?  Are you tired of having to defend Disney World‘s extreme awesomeness?  Well, let me help you out there. Here are my top five reasons for being a Disney World nerd. Feel free to borrow them and adapt them to your own brand of Disney nerdyness.

1.   The cast members. I like visiting Universal Orlando, in fact, I might even admit that in some areas of Islands of Adventure, they have superior theming (ouch), but you know what I don’t get there?  I don’t get Disney cast members, that special kind of person who could make more money working elsewhere  (we all know that, right?) but works at Disney because they love it.  Yes, you’ll occasionally deal with a cast member who’s having a bad day, but that’s not the norm. Disney cast members are really good at their jobs and even when you don’t exactly notice it, they’re making your trip better.

2.   The food. Even Disney quick-service is better than most fast food. I recently had an expensive lunch  at my local zoo and it was so bad my kid said  “This is terrible. I’d rather be at Pecos Bills!”  Me too, son.  In fact most theme parks, zoos, and the like have pretty appalling food.  And that’s not even considering Disney’s table-service restaurants. A lot of thought goes into these menus, which have to please a wide range of people, everything from picky foodies to little kids who only like macaroni and cheese made a certain way. The amazing thing is they’re not just doing this for one restaurant but for dozens, several times a day. And the food is consistently good.

3. It’s the memories.  It’s kind of corny, but when I walk down Main Street USA, it feels kind of like home.  For years, no matter how many places I’ve lived (and I’ve moved a lot), coming back to Disney World has always felt like that.  Stop laughing!  It’s the theming, the people who work there, and the memories I’ve made with people I care about (yes, I do have friends, thank you).  I could go to Six Flags a dozen time and never have that same connection with the place.

4.  The Resorts.  I’ll be completely blunt:  Disney has ruined me for regular hotels forever. No matter how nice,  it’s just a hotel without that Disney story and theming.  And yes, I know I can get a really luxurious room at the Waldorf, but can I get hidden Mickey‘s in the carpet and will housekeeping smile indulgently and look the other way when I take another shower gell from the cart?  No, I didn’t think so.

5.  The parks!   There’s something for everyone in a Disney park.   They’re clean, they’re entertaining, and when you add it all up, it’s a great value for your vacation dollar.

So go ahead, admit you’re a Disney nerd. You never know, maybe you’ll meet a fellow nerd while you’re at it.

Disney Baby Launches Mix-And-Match Nursery Essentials Collection

The Disney Baby brand today launched an all new nursery essentials collection designed to deliver smiles to nurseries everywhere. The new Disney Baby bedding/nursery essentials collection features five on-trend colors and themes with whimsical prints inspired by mom-favorite Disney characters: Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Pooh & Piglet and the 101 Dalmatians. The line allows parents to pick and choose the nursery items that fit their needs and lifestyle, making it easy to mix and match and blend with any theme. The 75-piece collection is available exclusively at Babies “R” Us and includes sheets, receiving blankets, mobiles, storage items, wall décor, changing pad covers, nightlights, soft rattles, gift sets and more. Each item in the Disney Baby bedding essentials collection can be purchased separately. This “á la carte” shopping experience enables mom to choose what products she needs and wants for her baby’s nursery without purchasing a full set.

“Getting baby’s nursery ready can be exciting and overwhelming,” said Jessi Dunne, executive vice president, Disney Moms and Babies for Disney Consumer Products. “With our Disney Baby nursery essentials collection we aimed to help make any nursery the most magical place by providing moms the design freedom to mix and match nursery basics to create exactly the look they desire or simply to replace or enhance an existing item and avoid having to purchase a prepackaged assortment.”

Disney Baby products equip parents with the essentials they need for Creating Magical Moments Right From The Start™. Building off the success of the Disney Cuddly Bodysuit™ collection, which debuted earlier this year, the Disney Baby bedding essentials collection extends the magic of Disney to baby’s nursery.

The entire collection is available now at Babies “R” Us and www.babiesrus.com.

Top 10 Activities for Adults at Walt Disney World

Top 10 Activities for Adults at Walt Disney World

For those of you who think Walt Disney World is “just for kids”, thank again! There is plenty to do for adults too, including:

  1. Water sports: You can go water skiing, jet-skiing, rent a boat (motorboats, or pedal boats and canoes for the more physically inclined), and even go para-sailing at several WDW resorts
  2. Sample some world class cuisine: WDW has become very famous for it’s food, from delicious pastries and baked goods to 5 star cuisine and foods from all over the world, it truly is a dining experience like no other (It’s not just burgers and fries like you might expect at a theme park, although if you really want a burger, they have some super delicious ones!)
  3. Go on a “Beer Tour” around Epcot: The Epcot World Showcase features countries and their cultures, traditions, foods, and drinks. Each country serves ‘adult beverages’ you would find if you were actually visiting that country, and going from place to place sampling the native drinks is a great way to spend an afternoon
  4. Nightlife: Catch some live music at the House of Blues, take in La Nouba (Disney’s exclusive Cirque Du Soleil show), or just stroll along the paths of Downtown Disney at night
  5. Shopping: Downtown Disney is the home to a large number of stores (many of which are non Disney related, so if you are in the market for a souvenir without the Mouse on it, this is the place for you!). It’s a great place to visit because you don’t need a park ticket for it, and there are tons of great restaurants should you get hungry from all the shopping!
  6. Golf: WDW is home to 5 golf courses (three of which are PGA courses), so if golf is your thing they’ve got you covered
  7. Spa Treatments: 3 full service spas insure that you will be relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on all that Disney has to offer
  8. Thrill rides: Each of the 4 parks offer rides that are perfect for the adrenaline junkie in your family; Magic Kingdom has Space Mountain, Hollywood Studios has the Rock’N’Roller Coaster, Epcot has Soarin’, and Animal Kingdom has Expedition Everest (among others!)
  9. Enjoying the resort offerings: All of the WDW resorts offer beautiful pools, many have sit down restaurants, bike rentals, walking/jogging paths, and much more, and a bonus here is that during the day while most folks are away at the parks, these activities may be virtually empty and ready for you to enjoy
  10. Beyond WDW: I know, I am supposed to be talking about what the Walt Disney World Resort has to offer for adults (which is a LOT!), but I really want to mention that beyond the Disney walls lies even more for you to enjoy, like other theme parks, more shopping and restaurants, beaches, art/history/culture galore, and so much more. Consider renting a car and spending a day away, not only will this allow you to save some money on WDW park tickets, but it will give you a chance to experience more, and after all, isn’t that what a vacation is all about?

The great minds behind WDW work very hard to make sure that there is something for those of all ages to enjoy, it truly is the place “Where Dreams Come True” for everyone (adults included!)

ESPN Wide World of Sports will host 2012 World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships

ESPN Wide World of Sports will host 2012 World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships

USA Gymnastics and the International GymnasticsFederation (FIG) announced today that the 2012 World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships, along with the World Age-Group Competition, will be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex’s HP Field House at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla. More than 600 gymnasts total are expected to participate in the World Championships, scheduled for April 16-18, and the World Age-Group Competition, set for April 20-22.
“USA Gymnastics is honored to host this prestigious event for the first time in the United States,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics. “The HP Field House is an ideal venue for both competitions, and our international guests will enjoy all of the available opportunities through having the event at the Walt Disney Resort.”

“The FIG is very pleased to have the World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships held in the United States,” said Bruno Grandi, the FIG president. “This will be the first time this FIG World Championships has been held outside Europe, and I am particularly proud that the United States will host this global event. We hope the citizens of Orlando will come and cheer for the top gymnasts from around the world.”

“ESPN Wide World of Sports is very excited to host the World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships,” said Faron Kelley, director of marketing, Disney Sports. “We look forward to providing a showcase for this talented group of athletes and providing them with the kind of magicalexperience you can only find at Disney.”

Acrobatic gymnastics combines the beauty of dance with the strength and agility of acrobatics. Routines are choreographed to music and consist of dance, tumbling, and partner skills. At the elite level, each pair or group performs a balance, dynamic and combined routine. Pyramids and partner holds characterize the balance routine, while synchronized tumbling and intricate flight elements define the dynamic exercise. An acrobatic gymnastics pair consists of a base and a top. A women’s group is comprised of a base, middle and top partner, while a men’sgroup has a base, two middle partners and one top partner.

“Acrobatic gymnastics is incredible to watch,” said Sam Stark, president & CEO of the Central Florida Sports Commission. “I encourage everyone to come out and witness the amazing routines that include a combination of strength, balance and dance. The competition is guaranteed to be at the highest level and fun for the entirefamily.”

The tentative competition schedule is: World Championships – qualification rounds on April 16-17, and finals on April 18; and World Age Group Competition – qualification rounds on April 20-21, and finals on April 22. The World Age Group Competition has two age categories, 11-16 and 12-19.

Local hosts include the Central Florida Sports Commission and the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships, since they came under the FIG umbrella in 1999, have been held in Ghent, Belgium (1999); Wroclaw, Poland (2000, 2010); Riesa, Germany (2002); Lievin, France (2004); Coimbra, Portugal (2006); and Glasgow, Scotland (2008).

Disney – The Champions Of ‘Underpromise’ And ‘Overdeliver’

Disney - The Champions Of 'Underpromise' And 'Overdeliver'

First of all, these are my personal opinions and you may or may not agree. Regular visitors to any of the Disney venues already know what I’m talking about in the article’s title. Disney regularly tells you what they are going to do, they do exactly what they promise and then as Walt Disney himself insisted on for everything offered by his company, they ‘Plus It’. In other words, they do just a little bit extra to make the experience that much more memorable. I’m not going to lay out a bunch of particulars, instead I’ll offer some general observations and a few examples where appropriate.

Disney never does anything half way. Whatever they do is done the best way possible. Have you ever noticed how freshly painted everything looks even after 55 years at Disneyland and 40 years at the Magic Kingdom? That’s because they don’t just keep putting layers of paint one on top of the other, they completely strip every item before they repaint it.

The resort themes are not just facades, they are over the top. Wherever possible they use authentic items such as many of those in the Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge lobbies. They strive for accuracy so that your experience is as real as it can be. A lot of us get kind of hung up staying at the same resort all the time. We did that for a long time and are now trying a different resort each time to experience all that Disney has to offer. Try it, you’ll like it!!!

Landscaping plays a huge part in the overall Disney experience no matter which venue you choose. The landscaping is always groomed where appropriate and always free of trash and general litter. Think about what it takes to maintain your yard and expand that for example to the 43 square miles of the Walt Disney World resort. It’s a monumental task but the results speak for themselves.

Maintenance of the attractions, both for appearance and safety are of the utmost importance. As an example there is a whole crew of Cast Members whose job it is to polish all of the shiny metal surfaces (some of which are real gold) on the Prince Charming Regal Carousel every single night. That demonstrates how important detail is to the Disney company.

A lot of companies under promise and over deliver, unfortunately there are many more who over promise and under deliver. I believe that Disney is not only in the first group but is far and away the leader in the under promise and over deliver group. It’s not that they purposely downplay what they are offering, they just “Plus It” to exceed your expectations. A lot of folks think everything Disney offers is too highly priced but when you think about what it takes to do what they do every day of the year it’s worth every penny. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

“Strong as a Rock,” Disney’s Baby Elephant Receives Swahili Name

“Strong as a Rock,” Disney’s Baby Elephant Receives Swahili Name

With a birth weight of 311 pounds, the most recent elephant born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has been fittingly named Jabali, or “strong as a rock” in Swahili. According to zoological managers, the masculine name is well-suited for a baby elephant that could grow to an adult weight of more than 10,000 pounds.

Jabali was welcomed into the African elephant group last week by his 25-year-old mother Vasha, 10 herd members and a team of animal care professionals assisting with the birth. He’s also received a lot of attention from his older sister Kianga, who has been showering him with affection.

The next critical milestone is for the calf to continue the bonding process with his mother and sister, who are both teaching him important lessons as he gradually acclimates to the rest of the savannah herd over the next several weeks.

Jabali’s birth raises Disney’s elephant herd to twelve, making it one of the largest African elephant herds in North America.

Since early August, animal care teams have provided round-the-clock monitoring, regular ultrasounds and daily hormone monitoring of Vasha to more accurately predict the beginning of labor. In the past few years, Disney’s animal care teams have been able to narrow the birth window to within four days, which enables them to better prepare for the delivery.

Disney has been at the forefront of efforts to better understand and care for endangered elephants. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is part of a breeding program coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) that is focused on sustaining the elephant population in North America. AZA’s Elephant Species Survival Plan has called for a five-fold increase in African elephant reproduction efforts – using both natural and artificial breeding methods – in order to create a self-sustaining elephant population among North American zoos and wildlife centers.

Central Florida’s Children “Shine On” with $1.2 Million from Walt Disney World Resort

Central Florida’s Children “Shine On” with $1.2 Million from Walt Disney World Resort

In honor of its 40th anniversary, Walt Disney World Resort today kicked off a 40-day “Shine On” celebration across Central Florida to surprise, recognize and reward nonprofit groups, school districts and organizations that improve the lives of local children.

Between now and May 22, Disney will give more than $1.2 million in Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants throughout Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake and Polk counties. Additionally, prize patrols will recognize 15 students in the five-county area as Disney Dreamers and Doers Shining Stars for their outstanding character.

“Walt Disney World Resort supports programs that make a long-term positive impact on children in our community,” said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. “We are excited to begin this 40-day season of giving, during which we will distribute $1.2 million to local organizations that share our commitment to Central Florida’s children.”

Disney launched the effort this morning by awarding gifts totaling $290,000 to school districts and early learning coalitions in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake and Polk counties during a community networking breakfast at the Orlando Museum of Art.

“From the earliest steps toward kindergarten to high school graduation, our schools and our teachers have a profound effect on the leaders of tomorrow,” said Crofton, as she addressed an audience of community leaders and recognized Central Florida educators. “Great schools provide children the spark they need to go on to do great things. Disney applauds our local public schools for all the work they do to prepare our community’s children for the future.”

Disney Helping Kids Shine grant recipients demonstrate alignment with Disney’s goal of improving children’s lives by focusing on one or more of the following areas: connecting with adults, character development, constructive use of free time and compassion.

New Community Report Details Ongoing Contributions to Central Florida

Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants is just one of many ways that Walt Disney World Resort shares its magic within and beyond its borders. The newly released 2010 Community Report showcases Disney’s ongoing and active involvement in Central Florida.

As the largest single private employment site in the United States, Walt Disney World Resort and its more than 62,000 cast members play a vital role in Central Florida. The 2010 Community Report outlines Disney’s approach to corporate citizenship with a focus on accomplishments related to the environment, workplace and community, with a special emphasis on the well-being of children.

In 2010, Walt Disney World Resort focused on improving the lives of children through $28 million in cash and in-kind support, 228,000 hours from Disney VoluntEARS and collaboration with community leaders.

Examples of Disney’s charitable giving in Central Florida include:

  • Investing in children’s basic needs, such as quality healthcare and food and shelter for families in need. Walt Disney World works closely with local children’s hospitals, Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida and Second Harvest Food Bank to provide necessities for a quality childhood. Disney cast members gave $3.35 million during the Heart of Florida United Way campaign to assist social service agencies in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties.
  • Providing support for organizations that help children develop and strengthen character so they can make positive contributions to society.  The 2010 Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants improved the lives of more than 10,000 local children by awarding $1.2 million to fund programs through 57 charities. Top Disney grant recipients include Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida and A Gift For Music, of which Disney is proud to be a founding sponsor.
  • Building strong foundations from preschool through high school through support of education. Cast members donated more than 2 million school supplies through an annual back-to-school supply drive, ensuring thousands of local students were able to start the school year with the essentials. Additionally, more than 400 students were selected as Disney Dreamers and Doers, which recognizes exceptional youth who make a difference in Central Florida. The Process of Restoring Star Wars for Blu-ray

The Process of Restoring Star Wars for Blu-rayStarWars.com has got a great article about the process of restoring the Star Wars saga for Blu-ray. It’s interesting to see how the films have progressed from its initial theatrical release, Laserdisc, VHS, DVD and now Blu-ray.

“When they did the transfer from film for the previous DVD, they wanted to make sure they got rid of frame edges, artifacts, splices or what have you,” says Dorne Huebler, an Associate Visual Effects Supervisor at ILM involved in the Blu-ray restoration. “So they were pretty aggressive about the blow-up.”

A blow-up is a magnification of the film image done to avoid displaying the edges of the frame. The Episode I home video magnifies the image to such an extent that approximately 8 percent of the picture is missing. In certain shots in Episode I, there are characters from the edge of frame that are gone in the DVD release, and have now been restored for the Blu-ray.

Expanding the picture and revisiting it in high-definition also surfaced some longstanding visual effects and technical errors that had gone undetected in the past. Though not every shot has been revisited (there are 2,000 after all), some have been corrected for this release.

“Ironically when you see things in HD, it’s not forgiving in the way film can be,” explains Huebler. “Flicker, grain and projector weave naturally disguise certain nuances when viewing film. We’ve really gone over shots with a fine-toothed comb and discovered issues we could improve with a bit of TLC.”

“Some of the issues come from these movies being finished for film and projected for film, and that’s how people saw them. A lot of things that look a little different on HD or DVD are really the nature of how video treats color space,” explains Huebler. A dramatic example of this came up in the 2004 DVD release, with the dimming of the lightsaber cores throughout the trilogy, even to the point where Luke’s lightsaber aboard the Millennium Falcon shifted from blue to green in Episode IV.
