Exclusive "Behind the Bricks" Disney Living Video Series with LEGO Master Builder, Erik Varszegi

Take a behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of a LEGO master builder as Disney Living, the official YouTube channel from Disney Consumer Products, introduces you to Erik Varszegi – the brilliant mind behind some of LEGO’s most impressive, Disney-inspired creations.

The first of a three-part series, the video features an inside look at the construction of a life-size Jack Sparrow model made entirely out of LEGO bricks. Standing at over 6 feet tall and held together by nearly 150,000 tiny bricks, it’s the captain like you’ve never seen him before! Upcoming videos will feature other Disney-inspired LEGO models including a life-size Lightning McQueen and larger-than-life depictions of Toy Story’s favorite playthings, Buzz and Woody.

The LEGO Group will introduce nine exciting and versatile playsets celebrating key scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, including a buildable version of Queen Anne’s Revenge (SRP $119.99) and the Whitecap Bay playset ($79.99), where Jack Sparrow and the other pirates encounter mermaids. The line also includes favorite scenes from earlier films in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Fans will have to snap up all the sets to complete their collection of favorite characters in LEGO form.

‘Cars 2’ Soundtrack has International Superstars

'Cars 2' Soundtrack has International Superstars

Fully loaded with global locales, fast-paced racing, international espionage and a touching tale of friendship, “Cars 2” also features an amped up score by Oscar® and GRAMMY®-winning composer Michael Giacchino, plus music from alternative rock legends Weezer, country music hitmaker Brad Paisley, bestselling British singer/songwriter Robbie Williams, French superstar Bénabar and the power pop Japanese girl band Perfume. The international lineup puts the tune in tune-up as the “Cars” characters hit the road on a worldwide tour full of epic adventure.

“Cars 2” is the fourth Pixar feature score for Giacchino, who has previously composed the music for “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” and “Up,” along with half a dozen short films from the Studio. “Michael is doing such a cool score for the film,” says director John Lasseter. “We did not want to do a typical spy movie score. We wanted it to be something very different–a whole new approach.”

“John [Lasseter] knows the story,” says Giacchino. “He knows what his characters need and what they want. That’s how to discuss music—in emotions. If Mater is feeling left out, I can translate that into music. I love working with the people at Pixar because they all talk in terms of story and that’s how I love to work.”

Giacchino also wrote a French song called “Mon coeur fait vroum,” (“My Heart Goes Vroom”) which is sung for the film by the popular and admired French singer/songwriter Bénabar, providing a musical introduction to Paris. The lyrics for the song are by Giacchino and Scott Langteau with French adaptation by Boualem Lamhene. Bénabar’s self-titled album, released in 2001, launched a phenomenally successful singing career. In 2006, his album, “Reprise de Negociations,” was a top seller in Europe, and led to several major music industry awards the following year.

Providing their own unique take on the 1984 pop hit, “You Might Think” (written by Ric Ocasek and originally performed by The Cars) is the chart-topping, multi-platinum-selling American alternative rock band Weezer. Weezer burst on the scene in 1992, and has produced nine albums to date. “The song is going to play in the scene where Lightning McQueen and Mater go to Japan,” says Weezer’s Brian Bell, “which is great for us because it sort of mirrors our experiences in Japan—there was a little bit of culture shock.”

Bell says the band was surprised at the complexity of the song. “When we really dug deep into the song, we saw the genius of the arrangement and how all these relatively simplistic parts worked together to create this amazing fabric of sound.”

Multiple GRAMMY®-winning country superstar and Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year Brad Paisley, who was a major contributor to the first “Cars” soundtrack with the songs “Behind the Clouds” (written with Frank Rogers) and “Find Yourself,” returns with two new songs for “Cars 2.” Says Lasseter, “Brad and I became close friends during the making of ‘Cars.’ For ‘Cars 2,’ he and Robbie [Williams] have teamed up to do this really cool rock ‘n roll song. It’s something very different from what Brad normally does, but he and Robbie have created a fantastic song that captures the friendship of McQueen and Mater over the end credits.” Adds Paisley, “The song is a rock vocal event with one of the most talented people I’ve ever met, Robbie Williams. It was John’s idea to bring these two worlds together – combining the English and American takes on music. We’re both out of our comfort zone, seeing what happens when you’re forced into going new places, which is really what ‘Cars 2’ is about. It’s totally parallel to the story.”

The song, “Collision of Worlds,” is written and performed as a duet with Paisley and Williams, the talented, award-winning singer/songwriter who has achieved incredible fame as a solo performer and as a member of the group Take That. Williams has sold more than 57 million albums worldwide, and is one of Britain’s all-time top selling recording artists. “It’s an international kind of song that’s inspired very much by the film–it wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the story,” says Williams. “Brad turned up with his guitar and a basic understanding of what he wanted the song to sound like. He played me a few chords and we noodled and twiddled our way into forming this song. It’s back and forth colloquialisms between two different countries speaking the same language and not understanding each other—until now.”

A second song, “Nobody’s Fool,” is written and performed by Paisley. “It’s inspired by the most heartbreaking scene in the movie,” says Paisley. “Mater realizes that everybody thinks he’s playing the fool and he becomes sort of enlightened and realizes that he’s not playing the fool—he is one. But Mater realizes he is who he is and that was inspiring to me.”

Japanese girl band Perfume’s hit single “Polyrhythm” will also be featured in the film when Lightning and Mater attend the World Grand Prix opening night gala in Tokyo.

“Cars 2”—the music and the movie—races into theaters on June 24, 2011. The soundtrack from Walt Disney Records will be available June 14.

ABOUT THE MOVIE
Star racecar Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and the incomparable tow truck Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) take their friendship to exciting new places in “Cars 2” when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. Mater finds himself torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by master British super spy Finn McMissile (voice of Michael Caine) and the stunning rookie field spy Holley Shiftwell (voice of Emily Mortimer). Mater’s action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world. The fast-paced fun includes a colorful new all-car cast, complete with menacing villains and international racing competitors.
John Lasseter returns to the driver’s seat to direct this follow-up to his 2006 Golden Globe®-winning “Cars.” “Cars 2” is co-directed by Brad Lewis, producer of the Oscar®-winning film “Ratatouille,” and produced by visual effects industry veteran Denise Ream (associate producer, “Up”; visual effects executive producer, “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith”).

CARS 2 hits the track on June 24, 2011, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ and IMAX® 3D in select theaters.

Guests at “Little Mermaid Meet-Up” Enjoy Rare Opportunity to Meet Imagineers, Animators

Last night, guests at our “Little Mermaid Meet-up” got to see some stories from the Disney Parks Blog come to life, with a rare opportunity to meet Walt Disney Imagineers and Walt Disney animators. They also got to hear some fascinating stories about the attraction that opens June 3 at Disney California Adventure park: The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure.

This was the star line-up for our panel discussion: Walt Disney Imagineers Lisa Girolami, Larry Nikolai and Chris Crump from the attraction’s creative team, plus Walt Disney animators Andreas Deja and Mark Henn, who worked on the animated feature film on which the attraction is based. Tim O’Day, a Disney author and historian, served as emcee.

The panelists told us the attraction took nearly four years to create, from concept to finish. Larry revealed that the “Under the Sea” scene has more than 128 characters, “if you count the 50 starfish.” And though it has been “a lot of work,” they also said they’ve had a lot of fun.

The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure Meet ~ Up

After an exciting presentation, with behind-the-scenes video and photographs, the panelists answered guest questions. One question came from Fred, a regular Blog reader: “What was one of the most exciting parts of creating this attraction?”

Chris Crump answered by telling a story about the Ursula character, who stands 12 feet tall and 7.5 feet wide. The team created her at the Imagineering offices, and then moved her into the attraction, calculating carefully to fit her into the allotted space. It was a tight squeeze. “When the hatch opened, I was just looking at her tentacles, hoping… and the tentacles cleared the hatch by about an inch,” Chris said, very relieved.

Our guests mingled with the Disney panelists and enjoyed some fabulous appetizers before the show began in a ballroom at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. Guests also got a few autographs signed on their special gift – a beautiful lithograph featuring a portion of the mural that will be inside The Little Mermaid attraction queue line.

The guests – big fans of the Disney Parks blog — got to meet some of our authors, Erin Glover and Jim Ames. And they took photos with Ariel, the star of the new attraction.

We’ll tell you more about what the Imagineers and animators had to say in another post. Today, we want to share two stories about our guests. They came from down the street in Anaheim and from as far away as Idaho and St. George, Utah.

Samantha and Anastasia, a mom and daughter from El Dorado Hills, traveled from Northern California for the meet-up. Samantha told us why she’s looking forward to the new attraction: “Ariel is the best princess ever. She’s a princess and a mermaid. How can you beat that?”

Logan Kendell and Katrina Maughan drove nearly 400 miles Tuesday from St. George, Utah, stopping on the way to don a suit for the event. Logan is a big fan of Disney and animator Andreas Deja.

When Logan met Andreas, he asked: “What was the first thing you did for Disney?” The animator told him a story about his first year at Walt Disney Animation Studios, working with then little-known director Tim Burton. That was just before Dejas began working on “The Little Mermaid” film – more than 25 years ago . After the panel discussion, Logan and Katrina wished they could stay for the opening of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure.

The evening closed with reserved viewing for “World of Color,” which is located just across the way from the new Little Mermaid attraction. I hope our panelists and guests had as much as fun as we did. Thank you again, Lisa, Larry, Chris, Mark and Andreas for giving our meet-up guests such a great experience last night, and thanks to all of our guests for coming to the event and following us on the Disney Parks Blog, Facebook and Twitter.

Stay tuned for a follow-up post with more insights from the Imagineers.

Phineas and Ferb Meet and Greet Delayed due to school

Phineas and Ferb with Disney Channel Star Alyson Stoner at a Disney Magic of Healthy Living Event

Hi everyone. I just received word that Disney Channel animated stars, Phineas and Ferb (pictured above with Disney Channel star Alyson Stoner at a Disney Magic of Healthy Living event), are pushing back the opening date for their play ‘n’ greet experience at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Originally scheduled to debut in mid-May, the duo will actually arrive at their new movie-themed play ‘n’ greet experience in a few more weeks. The experience will follow the characters as they make a movie about their crazy adventures, with a little help from guests and movie Director Cletus Filmore.

When asked the reasons behind the delay, a representative for Phineas and Ferb cited a mix-up in the boys’ school schedules, as they’ll actually be finishing up school in late May.

In addition, Pooh’s new meet and greet experience at The Magic of Disney Animation attraction also has been pushed back.

Which kind of Disney Line Companions are you?

Which kind of Disney Line Companions are you?

Have you ever been in line at Disney World and looked around at the different people in line with you? I have noticed you have several Disney Line Companion types in line with you. I know I could easily fit into a few of these categories..

These are just for fun and by no means complete as you can have several variations and hybrid group types.

    • Hardcore – These are the people with most times absolutely nothing on them, no camera, phone, park map, nothing…Most times this is older couples without kids or couples with teen age kids. They know the parks like the back of their hands and they don’t need to look around cause they have already seen everything.
    • Married with Children – These are the people with everything…Diaper bag, camera, cell phones, fanny pack, stroller, etc. They look like they are on a trek to the Himalayas. Usually they can open a bag and have a complete kitchen, hospital, and department store all hiding inside that one bag. You don’t really see the parents much you are to busy being entertained by their kids.
    • Love Birds – Most times these are younger couples. Usually holding hands and loving on each other. Oblivious to everything going on around them. Maybe there on a date or a honeymoon. This is what the Married with Children group used to look like before kids. These are the ones who get to ride on every ride, stay from when the park opens to when it closes, and looks the most relaxed.
    • Business Casual – This is the best looking group. They look like they just ditched their Conference or round of Golf to hit up the parks. Most times they are way over dressed for being in the heat. Usually accompanied by their lifelong companion their Blackberry. If you listen closely enough you can actually hear their entire conversation while in line.
    • Outlanders – One of the most entertaining groups as they are there to have 100% fun. Usually better dressed than I am and always a pleasure to talk to if they are from an English speaking country, or if they have actually taken the time to learn our language can make for some very funny conversations. Interesting to see and hear how other cultures act.
    • Fastpassers – These are the ones walking by you in line and the ones you wish you were.
    • Loners – Usually there by themselves or 1/2 of a Married with Children group. They are the most outgoing Line Companion Group as they desire to talk about everything and anything. Beware if a loner is listening to music and texting as they probably do not want to be bothered.
    • Grumpy Teens – You do not look at or talk to this Line Companion. Not that you can talk to them over the sound of their iPod. They would much rather be somewhere their parents are not. Best to keep your back to them as not to see what they are texting about you.
    • The Extremely Large Family Reunions – You will recognize this mob by the brightly colored identical shirts. Usually one person is in the lead (or so he thinks) followed by his family. The leader usually has no clue where he is going and it like watching a train wreck you just can’t look away.
    • Cougars – Usually medium to large group of women on their own vacation from their spouses. Very loud group internally but not very social to outside parties. Can be heard talking about other females butt sizes and what their spouses has messed up now.
    • Nerds – Hardcore Disney Nerds are very easy to pick out as they are covered from head to toe in Disney Wear. From their lanyards all the way to their Mickey Mouse Crocs. They are the best people to ask where something is in the park. Usually they are taking tons of pictures, checking wait times on their cell phones, or streaming live video to their blog.

This is just a few of the people you will run across and meet while at Disney. Again this is only a fun and not meant to put down anybody.

If you can think of some others let us know in the comment section below.
