Will you save $$ on the Disney Dining Plan? Do the math!

Will you save $$ on the Disney Dining Plan? Do the math!

I thought this was super interesting…

So one one of my most recent trips, because we were going to be there for 4 full days but only 3 nights we figured that we would forgo the dining plan and see how it all worked out money-wise if we just paid out of pocket. I had been curious about this for a while and we knew even if we did the dining plan we’d be paying for at least a day of meals out of pocket anyhow.

I always save all of our receipts and I did the math… very intense math for someone who does not fully understand this language of numbers… lol…. and I accounted for everything from refill mugs to alcohol to how we would have allotted our credits realistically and most affordably.

Here’s the breakdown:

Dining for me and the hubby (our party was just us two adults), eating when/where we felt like it (we had reservations at 1900 Park Fare, California Grill, Kona, and O’Hana during our trip and eat 3 meals a day) and paying completely out of pocket (we actually charged everything to our room and then settled up at the end) =$550.79

If we had gone with the Basic Dining Plan and accounted for the cost of the DDP plus the alcohol that wouldn’t have been included, plus the refill mugs, plus the meals for our 3rd and 4th day that we would have had to pay for OOP our total would’ve =$625.32

And if we had gone with the Deluxe Dining Plan and included the drinks and last day of meals to account for running out of credits our total would’ve =$657.44

I was very surprised at the result! Really we would’ve saved NO money using Disney Dining Plan?! We actually saved a bit by NOT using it!! I thought I would have come out having been able to save like $40-50 per person if we’d used DDP not the opposite. And to be honest, that would have been negligible as well.

It reminded me of our first trip in 2006 going and just charging everything to the Key to the World and really feeling the all-inclusiveness. We had set aside $500 for meals beforehand so it was no big deal as far as budgeting goes but really I think the bang for your buck has gotten lost over the last 4 years on the DDP. The biggest thing I don’t like is tips not being included anymore. Don’t get me wrong I am an excellent tipper BUT the all-inclusiveness of the DDP is lost when you are pulling out your wallet to leave cash behind. And with the added QS and Deluxe plans it seems like the more options have not been anything that helps us with our eating habits. We went in 2008 during Free Dining and just upgraded to Deluxe but had to pay for a few things out of pocket as well because the Wine & Dine option is just not affordable for us although we like a drink or two at lunch and dinner. It would work so much better for us if the DDP allotments went by the number of days or park tickets you had or something because we always stay late our departure day, or if you could swap out dessert for a cocktail or something more flexible.

In any case, I liked our new way of dining and will probably stick with it in the future unless the dining plan changes in the next couple years. I urge anyone to do the same your next trip, save your receipts so you can do the math and make sure you are making the right choices for you and your family. I suspect that in some cases you may find the opposite true (that paying out of pocket is not the deal and you will save on DDP). Nonetheless, you have to figure it all out, which can be tedious, as you would have to account for what you would get in DDP credits, plus things like alcohol or refill mugs that may or may not be part of your dining plan.

Good luck and happy planning!

Ask a Disney Question? Is there a time of year when the golf courses aren’t open?

Ask a Disney Question? Is there a time of year when the golf courses aren't open?

This question comes from Larissa, who asks:  “I was looking up information for the golf courses for my dad and it seems like they may not be open the time we’re going to be there.  Any of them. Is there a time of the year when the golf courses aren’t open?”

Larissa:  I just spoke to Disney and they told me that there is always a golf course open. Disney has four 18-hole courses and one 9-hole walking course.  Each one is shut down for maintenance for two weeks in the fall and again in the spring, but it’s not done all at once, so there will always be at least one course open.

Disney World Planning 101- Kids Play Areas - EPCOT
Play in the water fountains, like this one at Epcot. D.K. Peterson

Unlike the Magic Kingdom, there aren’t actual climb around play areas for kids in EPCOT.  Don’t fret though, because EPCOT does offer several different non-attraction areas to entertain the young ones.  During the warmer months, which are the majority of months in Central Florida, the fountains, shown above, a wonderful area for kids of all ages to run through and cool off.  The fountains shoot water at different heights and it can become a game to try to catch the water, or even try to avoid getting soaked.

EPCOT is also filled with indoor areas for young ones to explore and burn off steam.   In Future World, the Pavilions all have educational activities, but also play area, for kids of all ages to explore and learn.  In the Imagination! Pavilion, there are areas to conduct different instruments, over at Innovations, there are play houses, a fire truck, robots to control, and ever-changing exhibits to entertain both mentally and physically.

In the World Showcase, Kidcot stations are located in every pavilion, offering *free* arts and crafts, decorating masks with the supplies provided in each Pavilion.  For more free entertainment, check out the Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure. A family scavenger hunt throughout the world showcase, the Kim Possible adventure gives teams a “Kimmunicator” (cell phone) to get clues helping you on your mission, with a secret final for those that complete the mission.

Disney ready to hire 800 workers for hotel

Disney ready to hire 800 workers for hotel

A great News Story from the Star Adviser.

The Walt Disney Co. plans to hire through the next six weeks most of the 800 workers needed for its much-anticipated Aulani Resort in West Oahu, providing a needed boost to the state’s anemic job market.

Most of the major construction has been completed and crews are doing finishing work on the 21-acre property that represents Disney’s entry into the Hawaii vacation market.

Disney has so far hired about 100 employees, many in managerial positions, said Djuan Rivers, vice president of Disney Vacation Club and Resort, Hawaii. The company is now moving forward with hiring many of the hourly workers to fill a variety of positions from housekeeping to food and beverage and entertainment in preparation for the Aug. 29 opening, he said.

Response from job seekers has been overwhelming, with 2,000 to 3,000 applications being submitted, according to Rivers. The resort will be opened in three phases, with 1,250 employees on the payroll by the final phase.

Disney’s hiring will provide a lift for Hawaii’s economy, which has been struggling to produce jobs after the recent recession, said Eugene Tian, the state’s acting chief economist.

Ten Things to Do at Disney World at Night.

Ten Things to Do at Disney World at Night.

And they don’t involve fireworks.

Okay, sure, we all love watching Wishes and Illuminations, but that’s just part of the night. Here’s a few fun activities to enjoy once the sun goes down.

  1. Go to the Boardwalk and watch the entertainment.
  2. Go on an adults-only date at one of Disney’s top restaurants like California Grill or Yachtsman Steakhouse.  If you need a sitter, try Kids Nite Out or one of Disney’s kids clubs.
  3. Want to go all out?  Have dinner at a fancy-schmancy restaurant like Victoria and Alberts.
  4. Sneak on over to Universal Orlando Citywalk for nightlife and food. We won’t tell Disney that you visited “the other guys.”  Just hide the shopping bags, okay?
  5. Enjoy the parks when they are less crowded and it’s cooler.
  6. Stay in the parks after they close. No, we don’t mean all night (although we admit to thinking about it from time to time), but the parks stay open an hour after closing to get everyone out and allow some last minute shopping. Find a bench and watch the castle lights turn color as everyone around you rushes. You’ll be rewarded with an almost empty Main Street and a little extra magic.
  7. Shop and Downtown Disney close to closing time and you’ll be rewarded with near-empty shops.
  8. If you have your own car, don’t miss out on downtown Orlando, where you’ll find eclectic clubs and restaurants.  Orlando is also home to a thriving Vietnamese community where you can get inexpensive and tasty Vietnamese food.
  9. Relax in your resort’s hot tub.
  10. Find a quite spot at your resort and relax. Most resorts have quite nooks and crannies. Some even have cozy fireplaces. Often, other guests are running around too much to find these hidden gems, so grab a book and go get comfy.

Magical Meals: A Guide to Affordable Dining at Walt Disney World

Magical Meals: A Guide to Affordable Dining at Walt Disney WorldThe Affordable Mouse, a website and blog that provides help for those trying to save money on their Disney vacation, has announced the publication of a brand new e-book that focuses specifically on dining at Disney World. Magical Meals: A Guide to Affordable Dining at Walt Disney World was written to answer the many requests by readers of The Affordable Mouse for a guide that would provide information and cost-cutting strategies for food and meal planning at Disney World.

Dining is an overwhelming and confusing part of planning a trip to Walt Disney World for so many, because of the abundance of choices and options. Planning an affordable Disney vacation can be even more challenging because dining is such a significant part of the budget. Magical Meals was written to address this challenge, helping vacationers sort through all the choices, learn ways to save money and increase value, and ultimately achieve a vacation at Disney World that is filled with wonderful, and affordable, dining experiences.

While there is some general dining-related information, the true focus in the 60 pages of Magical Meals is on saving money, so every chapter is written from that perspective. In this guide, there is information about:

  • Types of Food Options at Walt Disney World
  • Disney Dining Plans and Discount Programs
  • Getting the Most Value for Your Meals
  • What You Need to Know About Advanced Dining Reservations
  • Food Allergies, Specialty Diets, and Vegetarian/Vegan Dining
  • And much more.

As the author, Nancy Bobby, shares in the introduction:

Meals are a major part of any vacation, and even more so at Walt Disney World, where dining can be an attraction all its own! But figuring out all the meal options at Disney can be overwhelming, because there are so many choices: there are hundreds of restaurant options on Disney World property alone, ranging from quick snacks to award-winning dining experiences. How do you know where to eat? How do you know when to eat? How do you use these Dining Plans?

And perhaps most importantly: How do you eat at Disney World affordably? Is it even possible?

THAT is what this guide is all about.

I want you to know that it IS possible to save money on your meals at Disney World.

It IS possible to navigate your way through the maze of Disney dining options, understand what it all means, make your plans, and then when you are on your Disney vacation, enjoy your meals, knowing that you are doing so as inexpensively as possible.

Organized and simple to use, the e-book format provides links to additional, more detailed information, as well as the versatility to print what is desired, or send to a smartphone for easy access while at the parks
