The Muppets Movie Character Descriptions with Spoilers

GARY (Jason Segel) is loyal to his brother Walter—the two do everything together. “Gary is from Smalltown, USA,” says Jason Segel (TV’s “How I Met Your Mother,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”), a longtime Muppet fan who created the role with himself in mind. “He’s very naïve, sweet and innocent, and he’s very much in love with his girlfriend Mary. He’s torn between his brother and growing into a new phase of maturation where it’s time to be with his girlfriend. He’s lived with his brother forever so that is his big struggle.”

The plot thickens when the trio decides to take a vacation. Says Segel, “The movie starts out with me and my brother Walter, whose wildest fantasy is to meet the Muppets. My goal is to take a vacation to L.A. with my girlfriend Mary. So we all come to L.A. and while taking a tour of Muppet Studios, which are now decrepit, we find out that they’re going to be torn down to drill for oil. So we have to find Kermit, reunite the Muppets—who have disbanded because of professional rivalries—and put on a show to raise enough money to save the studio.”

Gary throws himself into the effort, putting his relationship with Mary on the back burner—again. Will he ever be able to grow up and embrace true love?

With his Kermit t-shirt and watch, WALTER (Walter) is a devoted fan of the Muppets. The lifelong resident of Smalltown, USA, dreams of meeting his heroes one day, and feels that—just maybe—he belongs with them. So when brother Gary and his girlfriend Mary plan a trip to Los Angeles, Walter joins them with hopes of realizing his dream once and for all.

The role marks the big-screen debut for Walter, and one seemingly written for him. “I play Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan,” says the star, “which is a real coincidence, since I happen to be the world’s biggest Muppet fan and my name is Walter. It’s like I was made to play this part.”

Walter finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time—or is it the right time?—when he overhears evil oil baron Tex Richman discussing a plot to destroy Muppet Studios. With the help of Gary and Mary, it’s Walter who sets the plan in motion to reunite the Muppets and save the studio. His pure-hearted enthusiasm for all things Muppets just might save more than the studio, too.

MARY (Amy Adams) is a valued shop teacher in Smalltown, USA—at least if the number of apples on her desk are any indication. She is Gary’s longtime girlfriend who often finds herself playing third wheel to Gary and his brother Walter.

Mary shares Gary and Walter’s sweet, innocent disposition, but she’s growing weary of sharing her boyfriend with Walter. She can’t help but hope for a magical proposal during their Los Angeles vacation, but her plans are derailed when news of Muppet Studios’ pending demise spur the trio into expressly non-marriage-proposal action.

Amy Adams (“The Fighter,” “Julie & Julia”) was called on for the role—in a way that was impossible to miss, says the actress. “Jason and Kermit sent me an invitation to be in Disney’s “The Muppets”—they asked if I’d read the script and consider the role of Mary. Kermit was a big part of my decision. I don’t like to tell Jason that ‘cause he’s a little sensitive that I might be partial to Kermit, but I am.”

In Disney’s “The Muppets,” KERMIT THE FROG (Kermit the Frog) lives a quiet, solitary life. It’s been a few years since the Muppets last performed together and Kermit doesn’t realize how much he misses his friends until he’s tracked down by Walter, Gary and Mary from Smalltown, USA, and convinced to reunite with the rest of the Muppets to save Muppet Studios.

Returning to the role he made famous in six previous Muppet movies, “The Muppet Show” and countless TV specials and internet videos, is Kermit the Frog. “I’ve played other parts, like Bob Crachit in ‘A Muppet Christmas Carol’ and Captain Smollett in ‘Muppet Treasure Island,’ says Kermit, “but I think me is my favorite part.”

The role is a bit of a departure for the frog known for his unifying spirit and award-winning songs like “The Rainbow Connection.” “The movie is filled with comedy, music and adventure—like all the Muppet movies,” says Kermit. “But I play quite a dramatic role. You see a side of me that maybe you haven’t see before—and I’m not just taking about new camera angles. Acting wise, I really stretch to play me. One of my favorite moments is singing a brand new original song called ‘Pictures in my Head.’ I walk through the halls of a big mansion looking at portraits of my Muppet friends and missing those guys. It was very emotional…and I think it will disprove critics who’ve said ‘the frog can’t emote.’”

Kermit, who’s always the glue that holds the Muppets together, has a big job in this movie, going head to head with Tex Richman—a guy who’s lost his laugh—to save the studio.

TEX RICHMAN (Chris Cooper) is a rich oil baron who’s concocted a devious plan to destroy Muppet Studios, presumably to dig for the oil he claims is underneath.

But the truth, says Chris Cooper (“Adaptation,” “The Bourne Identity”), who portrays the villain, is that Tex has a personal vendetta against the Muppets. “He blames the Muppets for a terrible event that happened to him at his 10th birthday party,” says Cooper. “He is unable to laugh and has vowed to destroy the Muppets.”

But Tex Richman’s inability to laugh doesn’t stop him from taking part in other Muppet antics. He may be cold-hearted and conniving, but this oil magnate has a few secrets up his sleeve that are more fun than fiendish.

MISS PIGGY (Miss Piggy) showcases her diva attitude and big personality in a new made-to-order gig in Disney’s “The Muppets.” As plus-size editor of Vogue Paris, she shares her sublime fashion sensibilities with readers worldwide… at least until Kermit shows up.

The Frog is there, of course, as part of his mission to reunite all the Muppets to save Muppet Studios from Tex Richman. But Miss Piggy can read between the lines: she knows an invitation for love when she sees it. And really—how could she say no to Kermie?

Playing the role of Miss Piggy is none other than Miss Piggy (“Muppets from Space,” TV’s “The Muppet Show”). “It’s the role I was born to play,” says the internationally famous star. “Moi plays a high-powered, confident, charismatic, gorgeous, scene-stealing star who saves the day and wins her frog’s heart.”

Her fans would expect nothing less.

FOZZIE BEAR (Fozzie Bear) lives to make people laugh. So during the Muppets’ extended hiatus depicted in Disney’s “The Muppets,” the stand-up comic bear was determined to keep his act and the spirit of the Muppets alive—even if it meant joining up with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and the Moopets may be sincere, but they’re also a little creepy.

“The Moopets recreate great Muppet moments,” says Fozzie Bear (“The Great Muppet Caper,” TV’s “The Muppet Show”), who is back on the big screen as his namesake, “at least that’s what they told me we were doing. Could’ve fooled me.”

Regardless of who he shares the stage with, Fozzie will try anything to tickle the audience’s funny bones: gags, novelties, whoopee cushions, banana peels, custard pies and recycled jokes that earn more winces than laughs—particularly from his in-house hecklers, Statler and Waldorf (aka “those two old guys in the balcony”) In truth, Statler and Waldorf just might be the bear’s biggest fans. Though they’d never admit it, they may actually be happy to see Fozzie and the Muppets reunited—and they might have to throw the bear a laugh or two this time if it means saving Muppet Studios.

VERONICA (Rashida Jones) is a network executive called on by the Muppets to air their studio-saving telethon. She’s not easily swayed, and it’ll take a big-name star to seal the deal.

Actress Rashida Jones (“The Social Network,” TV’s “The Office) portrays the tough-as-nails woman to impress. “I play a hard-nosed, stressed-out TV executive,” says Jones, “but I am the only one who gives the Muppets the chance to air their fundraising telethon. I definitely crack the whip, though, because I’m scared of losing my job and I’m scared it’s not going to be successful—I yell at Kermit a lot.”

It won’t be easy, but hopefully, Kermit can charm Veronica like he charms every woman, network exec and diva pig he encounters.

GONZO THE GREAT (The Great Gonzo) has been very busy since the Muppets last performed. In Disney’s “The Muppets,” Kermit, Walter and the gang find that Gonzo’s career is down the drain—literally. “I play a plumbing magnate,” says the daredevil who returns to the role he singlehandedly made famous. “In this movie, we see what happens when I pursue plumbing—my original career choice. Actually, show business and plumbing have a lot in common—especially when it comes to clogs and snakes.”

It takes some convincing—and an increase in health insurance coverage—to get Gonzo back on stage. Fortunately, Gonzo (“The Muppets Take Manhattan,” TV’s “The Muppet Show”), a pioneer of all things weird, can’t resist the temptation of the wild and wacky stunts he performs to earn the eternal admiration (not to mention shock and awe) of his audience—and one very special chicken named Camilla.

Gonzo’s stage act, which includes shooting himself from a cannon, balancing a piano on his nose, or eating radial tires to classical music, will likely always end in disaster… but that’s the whole point!

ANIMAL (Animal), the ultimate rock n’ roll survivor, finally addresses a troublesome personality trait and finds himself in an anger management program in Disney’s “The Muppets.” He’s traded in his drums for a flute and is struggling to redefine his identity. As if…

But fear not, fans of the over-the-top, monosyllabic, appetite-with-legs drummer from Dr. Teeth’s Electric Mayhem Band. Once reunited with the Muppets, Animal’s incessant (yet innocent) pursuit of rock n’ roll, food and women (not necessarily in that order) returns. “Me like,” says Animal (“Muppet Treasure Island,” TV’s “The Muppet Show”). “Movie good.”

ABOUT THE MOVIE
On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, his brother Gary (Jason Segel) and Gary’s girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage a telethon and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate. With secret, signature, celebrity cameos, Disney’s “The Muppets” hits the big screen Nov. 23, 2011.

Reservations Open for Lunch at Donald’s Dining Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Donald's Dining Safari at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park

Donald’s Dining Safari at Tusker House Restaurant at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park is expanding from breakfast to also include lunch. Donald’s Dining Safari Lunch with Donald Duck, Daisy Duck and their pals begins Dec. 4 at the restaurant in Harambe Village in the Africa area of the park. (No Disney characters during dinner service.)

The buffet-style restaurant is a crowd pleaser and one of our favorites, with a delicious spread that always includes dishes with an African influence. For instance, breakfast include Mickey waffles, scrambled eggs and honey-glazed ham, but you also can taste bobotie, a delicious beef casserole that’s similar to a quiche; yam casserole (trust us, it’s delish); and mealie pap, a traditional porridge.

Chefs crank up the “wall of flames,” an 18-foot-tall rotisserie that roasts chicken throughout the day. The menu includes carved beef, curry chicken and fish, but there’s also spiced tandoori tofu for vegetarians. And while you can feast on plenty of familiar sides, try the chutneys, the Tunisian couscous salad or the savory vegetable samosa pastry. Pair lunch with a glass of South African wine, Safari Amber beer or a signature cocktail. Just save a little room for the warm banana-cinnamon bread pudding.

Little ones get their own buffet with mac and cheese, chicken, PB&J and other kid-pleasing tastes.

Cost is $14.99 to $16.99 for ages 3 to 9 and $25.99 to $29.99 for ages 10 and older. Guests can book Donald’s Dining Safari Lunch by calling 407-WDW-DINE (3463). Online reservations may be made after Sept. 14 by visiting www.disneyworld.disney.go.com/reservations/dining.

Let’s not forget

Let's not forget

Before I start my run of Disney News & Views I would like to take a moment and reflect what happened to us 10 years ago in New York City, PA, and DC. I would imagine all of us can think back and remember what we were doing the day the Twin Towers Fell.

At Chip and Co our thoughts and prayers go out to those brave individuals and their families who gave their lives at the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania.

After 9/11 our lives would never be the same.

God Bless all of our first responders, fire fighters, police officers and everyone who came through in this crisis and tried to bring a measure of peace in a chaotic situation.

Blessings to you all and have a magical day.

Why stay at Fort Wilderness? Why NOT!

Why stay at Fort Wilderness? Why NOT!

When it comes to planning a Walt Disney World vacation, the resort options are so endless that it can be headache-inducing (it was for me at first!)

Should you choose to stay on property (which I highly recommend), one of your options is Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, which is a moderate level resort (ie-middle of the road prices) with amenities and rustic charm galore

Lodging Options – Fort Wilderness offers different types of campsites from traditional tent sites (with electric), full hook up sites (with electric and sewage hookups), preferred and premium full hook up sites (size and location are what makes these ones more desirable). Not in the mood to ‘rough it?’ Then consider the Cabins at Fort Wilderness, which provide all the comforts of home nestled into the serene woods of the campground. The cabins sleep 6, have their own bathroom and kitchenette, and are a great option for families who desire a little bit more space to roam than your average hotel room.

Dining – In keeping with the frontier theme prevalent throughout the Resort, the dining options available are: Trail’s End Restaurant (serves American down-home classics on a breakfast and dinner buffet and has an ala carte lunch menu), Crockett’s Tavern (a full-service bar that features a small menu of items such as nachos and pizzas), Mickey’s Backyard BBQ (a seasonal character meal served family style with Mickey and his friends), and last but not least, the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Review, the Resort’s nightly old west themed dinner show that serves up delicious classics (friend chicken, ribs, and all-you-can-drink-beer) alongside a highly entertaining variety show.

Entertainment – There is so much to do at Fort Wilderness, including water sports (water skiing, boat rentals, and bass fishing tours can all be done here), extensive jogging/walking/biking trails (and yes you can rent bikes here too), 2 beautiful pools, horse back riding, a petting zoo, nightly movies with Chip and Dale, and so much more…needless to say, there is never a dull moment at Fort Wilderness.

Transportation – The Campground is BIG and spacious, which can mean a lot of walking, which is why they have an internal bus system that services different stops around the campground. You can also rent a bike to get around, or my personal favorite – golf carts rentals. The best transportation option in my mind though is the boat service to the Magic Kingdom – it is much better than a bus, and it isn’t always the fastest, but the view is certainly better (you pass the other deluxe resorts before coming upon the Magic Kingdom)

Value – When I was younger I used to wonder why we stayed at Fort Wilderness in our camper instead of in one of the hotels – and now that I am older, I have learned the secret – a Walt Disney World vacation does NOT come cheaply, and if you want to play with the Mouse, you have to pay…a LOT. If you’re a fan of camping, you can save yourself a ton of money with a  campsite at Fort Wilderness (typically around half the price of a hotel room at one of Disney’s Value Resorts), and with camping equipment and the ability to make your own food, you can save even more money.

I stayed at Fort Wilderness many times during my youth, and the car ride from Upstate NY to Orlando was a 2 day trip, hauling not only regular luggage but a pop-up camper, food, and every camping supply imaginable. No matter how long that trip and how tired we were, our moods magically lifted every time we entered into the Campground. It is beautiful, spacious, and I can’t say enough good things about it.

So if you are looking for a cheaper but still on-Disney-Property option, look no further than Fort Wilderness, it will make your Walt Disney World stay even more magical (and you didn’t think that was possible….)

XBox 360’s Star Wars Kinect Videogame Delayed

XBox 360's Star Wars Kinect Videogame Delayed

Microsoft has confirmed to OXM (Official XBox Magazine) that both Kinect Star Wars and the limited-edition Xbox 360 Star Wars bundle have been delayed.

Previously listed for release in “holiday 2011,” both have now been pushed back, presumably to next year although no new date has been given. Speaking exclusively to OXM, Microsoft said the delay was in order to achieve the game’s “full potential.”

Xbox 360 Star Wars Kinect Limited Edition Bundle

“Microsoft and LucasArts have elected to move the launch of Kinect Star Wars beyond holiday 2011 to ensure the full potential of this title is realized,” a spokesperson told us. “This move applies to both the Kinect Star Wars stand-alone game and the Kinect Star Wars Limited Edition Console. We will communicate additional timing information at a later date.”
That’s a shame. I was hoping to score the limited edition bundle for the holidays but it looks like I, and many of you, will have to put our plans on carbonite.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Coming to Walt Disney World

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Coming to Walt Disney World

Today, we’re thrilled to share plans for a new role-playing adventure coming to Walt Disney World called Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. This is going to be fun – and it’s all happening inside the park. Merlin the magician will recruit guests to become apprentice sorcerers and then help them with maps and clues that show where and how to defeat an army of Disney villains.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom Coming to Walt Disney World

Looks interesting, right? Work on this new adventure is already underway. You may notice a few giant crates and even some new spaces showing up throughout Adventureland. They’ll provide early clues to the challenge you’ll face while trying to save the Magic Kingdom.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is scheduled to debut in early 2012. And we’ll be sharing more details in the future so keep checking Chip and Cofor updates.

Our writer Anonymouse was all over this news a few months ago so be sure to check out her post here.

You might be a Disney Addict if

You might be a Disney Addict ifRemember the old Jeff Foxworth comedy routines about “You might be a redneck if…”? I do!! Part of why they were so hilarious to me was because I live in the deep south and so many of them were TRUE (however, I have lived in other parts of the country and have found there are just as many red-necks y’all just call them something different).  (SIDE NOTE: I mostly write Disney World stuff. I’m sorry if that bothers you Disneyland folks, but I don’t know enough about your park to write about it with consistency).

So (once again) I was awakened with a post idea….

You might be a Disney addict if…

1. You are already planning your child’s (born or unborn) wedding at the Walt Disney World wedding pavilion. (complete with reception at Grand Floridian and horse-drawn princess carriage).

2. You have every seriously considered paying someone going on a Disney trip to bring you a Dole Whip or Turkey Leg back home.

3. You have at least one Christmas tree that has nothing but Disney Christmas ornaments on it.

4. You would never EVER marry someone who said they didn’t want to go to Disney World or Disneyland.

5. The majority of posts you regularly see on Facebook feeds (due to the new frequency of interaction policy) have something to do with Disney.

6. You’ve ever gotten into a serious argument about whether its more important to go get fast passes for Soarin’ or Test Track when first entering Epcot or Toy Story Mania vs Tower of Terror vs Rockin’ Rollercoaster at Hollywood Studios.

7. You’ve ridden in the single-rider line even though you were with a “party” of people. (Every man/woman/child for themselves.)

8. You watch the Disney Vacation Planning DVD’s even though you know every single tip they could offer you.

9. You have a Disney Visa that you pay off monthly just so you can use the points for food/ souvenirs in the park.

10. You have a SECOND Disney Visa that you use JUST to book vacation packages so you can get 6 months no-interest.

11. You would DIE to have your backyard chosen for “My yard goes Disney”.

12. You half hate/ half love Samantha Brown because she gets to go to Disney all the time.

13. You make your kids/ significant other/ family get up and watch the Disney Christmas Parade.

14. You know that the names on the windows on Main Street USA are almost all people who worked with Walt in planning Disney World.

15. You’ve ever thrown a coin to a yeti statue in the line for Expedition Everest.

16. You’ve encouraged someone going to WDW to try “Beverly” at Coke’s “Club Cool” because its… um…. delicious (snicker, snicker)

17. You know that if you wait too long to get ADR’s you don’t have a prayer of getting a table at O’hana (for dinner), Le Cellar (for anything), California Grille (during fireworks) or Cinderellas Royal Table.

18. You refuse to do the math on Disney Vacation Club vs how much you’ve spent in trips so far because you know it would make you weep.

19. You see a woman with a Disney tote bag or purse on the street in “the real world” and know exactly which store it came from.

20. Almost every hat or visor you own has a Disney character on it.

21. As SOON as you book your next trip you set a count-down widget somewhere on your computer or phone so you’ll always know “how many days till”.

22. One of your favorite things to do while at WDW or Disneyland is to take pictures on your cell phone and text (or upload them to facebook) your friends who AREN’T there with you!!! (come on, rubbing it in is half the fun!!)

23. You no longer notice the people in the park wearing fanny-packs.

24. You can do Animal Kingdom in 1/2 a day.

25. You have ever been jealous of the college kid working in the hot sun in a polyester outfit of some sort because “at least they work at DISNEY”.

26. You know how to make all 4 of the animal sounds at the Festival of the Lion King.

27. You know that Off Kilter has one heck of a bagpipes player.

28. You are seriously MAD that the child Chinese acrobats contract was not renewed.

31. You’ve ever gotten a hair-cut at the Harmony Barbershop on Main Street.

32. You notice “hidden mickeys” everywhere!!! (my kids are constantly yelling loooook… hidden mickey mom!)

33. You’ve seen at least one celebrity (and their tour guide) in the parks.

34. You have your own “secret spot” for parade viewing , fireworks & using the bathroom that you don’t want to share with anybody because then it will get busy.

36. You know the name of the “purple dragon” on the Imagination ride and when to hold your nose (and close your eyes)

37. You know that Mulan isn’t actually a Princess, that “sleeping beauty” has a name, and that Snow White’s Prince does NOT.

38. You know which rides the Imagineers SERIOUSLY need to consider updating.

39. You have ever cried/ teared up while watching Wishes!

40. You learned about what hydroponics was from riding “The Land” and you REALLY want a Mickey shaped pumpkin!

41. You ALWAYS pack your own ponchos.

42. You know which horse is “Cinderella’s horse” on the Carousel.

43. You can sing the music that plays in the “Innoventions” area at Epcot.

44. You know what parts of the safari to hold on a little tighter for.

45. You know when you see two vultures to put your hands up in the air because its going to be a Loooooong way down!

46. You know where to shoot on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin & Toy Story Mania in order to get the most points.

47. You know that Dinosaur is, for serious, the scariest ride at Walt Disney World!

48. You have thought of a question that YOU would ask Crush if you were the “dude in the yellow shell”. (my husband always tries to get my kids to ask Crush if turtles taste like chicken. They never will).

49. You know where the sky-way buckets use to be.

50. If you are STILL reading this post and laughing to yourself, you MIGHT be a Disney Addict!

51. You join our group.. You might be a Disney Addict if..

5 Tips for Moms at Walt Disney World

5 Tips for Moms at Walt Disney World

My first trip to Walt Disney World as a mom was a complete mess.  I was unorganized and unprepared.  I experienced a lot of stressful events at Walt Disney World that year, so to spare you from making the same mistakes I made…

Here are my top 5 tips for Moms at Walt Disney World.

  • Always take baby wipes, no matter what age your child (or husband) is!  Someone is bound to get messy and it is great not having to run into the bathroom here or there just to wash hands.  They are also great for an afternoon pick me up.  Just rub a baby wipe across your neck and over your face and feel refreshed!
  • If you do not have a refrigerator in your Walt Disney World Resort room you can still chill bottles of water!  At night fill your sink with free ice from the vending machine and put some bottle waters in to chill for the next day.  By morning the ice will have melted and the water can drain nicely down the sink.  Pack the water (or juice boxes) in a  cooler before you leave for the Parks and they will stay nice and cold inside a cooler till you are ready for a drink. Check out this exciting news from Anonymouse talking about all Value Resorts getting Fridges.
  • Keep your purse organized with Ziploc bags!  Seriously, these things are great!  You never know when you might get wet at Walt Disney World and who wants to chance it with cameras, video cameras, and phones?  It is much easier to find what you need when your personal items are organized and a lot less time consuming then dumping your purse out on Main Street searching frantically on your hands and knees for your Photopass card.  Seriously, been there done that.
  • If a Cast Member asks if they can assist you, let them!  Disney staff is highly trained and are some of the best employees in the world.  They deal with family crises  everyday and handle them well.  I have never seen a Cast Member get annoyed when stopped to answer a question.   They may even have something extra magic up their sleeve for you.  And remember, please and thank you go a long way!
  • Depending on how old your kids are, pick out 8-12 must do’s at each park.  After you have experienced those, enjoy the day.  Slow down and notice the little magic happening all around you.  Walt Disney World has magic in every last detail and if you are so attraction focused you may miss out on something really special.

So there you have it, my top 5 never fail suggestions for mothers braving Walt Disney World for the first time with children!  But mostly don’t forget to have fun!  A Walt Disney World vacation holds memories in every corner, make sure you enjoy them!

Irene put an unfortunate damper on my plans last weekend, as she did for so many up and down the East Coast. While my husband stayed to look after the house, my mom and I evacuated with my two small children to a hotel about three hours away. It was a lovely hotel but it was selected for its availability and its distance from my house – not for its thriving tourist center or local attractions. Trying to find inexpensive, local activities to pass the time with the kids was a challenge.

Lying in dark room waiting for a two-year old to fall asleep gives you a lot of time to think. What if I were stranded at Walt Disney World instead? What could I do with the kids outside the theme parks (with an eye on budget)? Here are some of my half-day ideas.

Simple Times

Fishing at Port Orleans Riverside. Amid all the wonderful hustle and bustle of the Walt Disney World resort there is a quiet, tranquil fishin’ spot. For $5 a pole for 30 minutes, including bait, try your hand at catching bass.

Cruise. Sassagoula River Cruise to Downtown Disney. Since we have nowhere to be, taking the scenic route to Downtown Disney from Port Orleans beats taking the bus in my book.

Shop. There are stores for every age and interest – from sports to toys and even for left-handed guests! My kids could spend an hour in Once Upon a Toy alone, playing at the Mr. Potato Head station or having LEGO car races outside the LEGO store. Both are free. Me – I’m the sentimental sort where the kids are concerned so I would spend $16 each to have their hand prints turned into a unique design at Hand Art Memories.

Earl of Sandwich. Earl of Sandwich is a great value. The sandwiches are large, delicious, and well-priced. I was intimidated by the lines at this eatery for years and avoided it. I was so wrong. The ordering process is very efficient and quick and it’s now on my must-do list for every visit to Downtown Disney.

Babycakes NYC. Dessert at Babycakes NYC would make a perfect end to our morning. I can’t say enough good things about the quality of the baked good here.

Back to Nature

Monorail. A trip to Walt Disney World with our family wouldn’t be complete without a monorail ride so we would start with a ride on the Magic Kingdom monorail loop and exit at the Magic Kingdom

Fort Wilderness. A boat from the Magic Kingdom would take us to Fort Wilderness where the kids would blow off steam at the playground. Next up would be pony rides and if we were hungry, lunch at Trails’ End Restaurant which has delicious fried chicken.

Wilderness Lodge. A boat launch would take us to Wilderness lodge for Magic Cookie Hour so the boys could decorate their own cookie. A look at the geyser would complete the outing for us.

Down at the Boardwalk

Surrey Bike Ride. Late afternoon would find us trying our hand at one of the surrey bikes on the Boardwalk. I know the kids would get a kick out of ringing the bell warning unsuspecting guests that we were on the move.

Sand Pail Meal. The sand pail meal saved our night on a recent trip. We grabbed two kids’ meals from Hurricane Hanna’s which were served in sand buckets with shovels, some food for the grown-ups, and found a quiet spot to have a picnic on the beach outside the Beach Club resort. The kids played happily in the sand while my husband and I relaxed.

Ice Cream. A “day” at the beach wouldn’t be complete without an ice cream cone from either Beaches & Cream Soda Shop or the Fountain.

Campfire Sing-along and Movie on Beach. To top the night off, we would stay for the campfire sing-along outside the Beach Club, roast marshmallows, and watch the outdoor movie.

Snack Crawl*

When in doubt with small kids, feed them and chances are they’ll be happy campers. To while away the morning, try having a snack crawl – stopping at different resorts for a signature snack and checking out the playgrounds while you’re there.

I would start with Tonga Toast from Captain Cook’s at the Polynesian Resort and then hop the monorail to the Magic Kingdom where I would pick up a bus to either Pop Century for their tie-dyed cheesecake or Port Orleans for beignets. So what if it’s still morning – you can’t go wrong with fried tough or a hunk of brightly colored cheese.

Now that we’re properly fed, we’d be ready for the trip to Downtown Disney for one of Cookes of Dublin’s Doh-Bars, a chocolate candy bar wrapped with dough and fried. Yum.

It’s time for our last bus ride to the Grand Floridian for afternoon tea. For only $12, the kids would enjoy the Mrs. Potts Tea with chocolate milk, small kid-favorite sandwiches, and a pastry or two.

*I feel compelled to state that I never feed my kids so many snacks in one morning but desperate times (ie, being stranded) sometimes call for desperate measures 🙂

How would you pass the time at Walt Disney World and spending it in the theme parks doesn’t count!

Don’t let the rain get you down. 10 Tips of things to do on Rainy Days.

Don’t let the rain get you down. 10 Tips of things to do on Rainy Days.
We chose to brave the rain and are glad we did!

Rain can really ruin a day, or even a whole vacation. Luckily, when you’re vacationing in Walt Disney World, there are plenty of things to keep you occupied when the Florida weather doesn’t want to cooperate.

Here are some great things to do on a rainy (or any!) day at WDW:

Catch a movie (and a meal!): at AMC Downtown Disney 24, you can catch that movie you forgot to go see (probably because you were so excited and busy getting ready for your WDW trip!). Not only that, but the theater’s new “Dine-In Theater” option allows you to order and enjoy appetizers, entrees, desserts and drinks from the comfort of your movie seat!

Take in the Hoop De Doo Review dinner show: put on twice nightly, this wild west themed show serves up all you can eat ribs and fried chicken….and all you can drink beer and wine! A perfect place to unwind, have some laughs and some good food, and escape the bad weather!

Disney Quest: a one-of-a-kind indoor interactive Theme Park bursting with five floors of games that give “state-of-the-art” new meaning….aka the place to get the perfect “indoor” Disney experience.

Go for the royal (spa) treatment: Get a massage/manicure/pedicure at one of Walt Disney World’s award winning spas (because hey, doesn’t everyone deserve a little me time on vacation?)

Monorail Tour: The monorail travels between the Magic Kingdom and the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, and Contemporary resorts – all beautiful and fun places to explore, shop, and grab a meal or a snack (we plan on doing this one our next trip, the hotels are gorgeous and we can pretend we are staying there if only for a short time ha!)

Everyone’s Gotta Eat: Try a new restaurant or two, if you’re willing to brave a few minutes of rain, the park restaurants are a good choice as they will be less crowded on a rainy day.

Shop til you drop: Again, you have to be slightly willing to dodge a few raindrops for this one, but there are tons of stores (including the HUGE “World of Disney”) in Downtown Disney, and I can think of no better way to while away a rainy afternoon than picking up some souvenirs for me and my loved ones (ok, mostly me!)

Take a nap: Ok, this one may seem lame, but after days of walking around at WDW, it never hurts to catch up on sleep!

Brave the rain: of course if none of the above appeal to you and you’re feeling adventurous, throw on a poncho and head to the parks. It will be much quieter and you will see shorter lines, plus there are plenty of amazing indoor attractions…Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, Rock n roller coaster … Just to name a few!!

Above all, be realistic….it’s probably going to rain at some point during your trip, so be prepared!
