In need of an upgrade – “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” Play Area

In need of an upgrade - "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" Play Area

I recently wrote a few articles about the different play areas for kids in the theme parks.  I happily wrote about the Magic Kingdom’s Laughing Place and EPCOT’s water splash pads.  I loved discovering some of the secrets of the Boneyard Playground at the Animal Kingdom.  But, then I realized something – the “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” movie set adventure hasn’t changed a bit since I was 10 years old – just a couple of years after the park opened as Disney-MGM Studios.

When I was 10, the movie was only a couple of years old (same as DHS – 1989) and I had seen the movie and was most likely looking forward to the sequel (the first sequel, “Honey, I Blew Up the Kids,” was released in 1992.  The playground was great.  I loved climbing on the bees, sliding down the 35mm rolls of film, and exploring the area from the perspective of an ant.  But, now, I’d place a bet that 95% or more of the kids entering DHS have never seen any of the movies.  And, probably the majority of them have no idea what 35 mm film is, or why their parents needed something like that when they could just take pictures and see them instantly on the camera’s viewer.

10 years ago, I would have said – turn it into a Bug’s Life playground.  The Pixar movie would have been perfect.  But, seeing that A Bug’s Life is no longer the main movie, I have another option – how about a Toy Story playground?  We could all be the size of Buzz and Woody, or Hamm and Bo Peep.  We could be on ground playing with them, trying to find our way to Pizza Planet, or at least to their delivery struck. Maybe my option isn’t the best, but I’m a recreational writer for Chip and Company and we have Imagineers to strike gold!

What are your suggestions for this, or other attractions, that need to be updated?

I Love this Disney Site: MouseLinked

I Love this Disney Site: MouseLinked

I love this Disney site! A few months back I met Randy Ojeda, aka @FluffedMojo, on Twitter. We chatted Disney stuff for a bit, then he invited me to check out his new social network: MouseLinked.

To say MouseLinked is like Facebook for Disney fans is an understatement. It’s the place where all Disney fan communities come together, from blogs to podcasts to forums…to infinity and beyond! Randy’s goal in creating this new network stemmed from Walt’s own inspiration. He wanted to build “some kind of internet enterprise where content creators and the content consumers can have fun together.” He has succeeded!

I’ll let Randy himself tell you more:
JW: Tell me a little about yourself and what you do.
RO: Well, my name is Randy Ojeda. I’m a junior at the University of South Florida, majoring in psychology. I’m planning on attending law school after graduation and eventually working for Disney Corporate (I know…big dreams). In the fall, I’ll be a part of the Disney College Program. When not in class, I fund my Disney pin addiction by working for the Geek Squad at Best Buy.

JW: What is MouseLinked?
RO: MouseLinked is the social network for Disney fans. It’s a site where you can go and connect with other people who share your passions, your love for Disney. It’s a fun way to find new friends, talk about Disney news and share photos and ideas in a site that’s ONLY for Disney fans.

JW: When and why did you create MouseLinked? Specifically, why Disney?
RO: It all started with a blog. I registered the domain YourHighwayintheSky.com in August of last year and began making some posts, thinking, “Disney fans will find this, they will flock to it.” Then I realized how many amazing Disney blogs are out there and how hard it is to find them and how hard it is for those blogs to find readers. You have Facebook and Twitter and everything, but Disney fans are a small subculture in those networks, not the majority. So I thought to myself, “There must be something built, some kind of internet enterprise, where the content creators and the content consumers can have fun together.” (This should be sounding like Walt at this point, lol). I wanted to make a website where you didn’t have to search for Disney fans. You had them all. You didn’t have to search for podcasts or blogs or radio networks…they were all there. Everything in the network would allow you to get your Disney fix! There were no free iPod scams or pictures of cats or spammers…just Disney fans being Disney fans. So I put the development of YourHighwayintheSky.com on hold and started on what would eventually become MouseLinked.com

JW: Did you create it by yourself?
RO: Are you crazy??? Lol! As soon as I had this idea, I enlisted the help of my good friend, Joshua Solanes. I had this idea in my head, I knew how I wanted the site to work, but I had neither the technical know-how nor the free time to put something like this together. So Josh and I spent hours and hours sitting at a table. I would draw out ideas and tell Josh something like, “Yeah, so we can have this here and this thingy there and then that will connect to this thing,” and he would make it happen. MouseLinked would still be ideas on a piece of paper if he hadn’t jumped on board. I’m very grateful that he did.

JW: There are thousands of Disney fan sites on the web, from blogs to digital magazines to discussion boards, etc. Why did you decide on this particular format?
RO: As I said previously, I wanted this to be a site to help bloggers, to work with discussion boards. I in no way want to compete with these sites. In fact, the opposite is true. I listen to a number of Disney Podcasts, read countless blogs, and FluffedMojo is registered on more forums than I can count. I figured this format would be the best way to bring all of these communities together. We are not mutually exclusive.

At the same time, I didn’t just want to make a Facebook clone. We have a lot of similar functionality, of course, but one thing I wanted from the beginning was a sort of Twitter-like microblog service built into the site. We call it The Wire. The Wire allows you to make short 140 character posts, but not specific to just your friends. The Wire goes to everybody. You can send private messages and write on somebody’s Magic Mirror, but if you need a quick answer, something anybody could help with, you can use The Wire. It’s a fast way to meet new people and find out the things you want to know throughout the network. If you want to know what time the 3:00pm parade starts, that’s the way to ask. {Editor’s note: LOL!!}

JW: How long did it take to build a social media site like this?
RO:Much like Disney itself, we are never finished. It took a while to get the functionality where it is now, but we are always adding new things, trying out new features, and most importantly, fixing bugs! What you have seen now is the short list of a long number of features that we need to implement. We just need the time to get to it all. That’s why the site still says Beta, Pardon Our Pixie Dust…and all that jazz.

JW: Are you making money from it? Do you hope to?
RO: We are not making much money from it. We have a few ads in place, which helps keep the servers up, but this is something to help the whole community. I want to make a tool that Disney fans and bloggers find useful. I want to help everybody out. Of course, the site does take a lot of time, and I’d hope that anybody who sees a significant increase in revenue, whether it be using MouseLinked to increase traffic to their site or sell more copies of their Disney book, would be willing to donate even a small amount to keep the site going. But all this comes in time, and the money isn’t the most important part (that’s why I’m staying in school!). The important part is, like I said, creating something that betters the community that I’m very happy to be a part of.

JW: What would you say is the benefit of joining a site like this as opposed to a forum based site?
RO: Forums are a great place for Discussion and this site is not aiming to compete with that. MouseLinked offers similar functionality to a network like Facebook or Twitter, but with a Disney-centric community. MouseLinked is more about making friends, planning meet ups and promoting what you do for the Disney community than a forum. Sure, in a forum you have a signature where you can link to your blog, but why not make a whole page to show it off?

JW: How many members is Mouselinked capable of supporting? How many current member are there?
RO: We have put the infrastructure in place to support thousands of members. Currently, we have almost 300 users; however, there’s room for more. Any volunteers?

JW: What does the future hold for Mouselinked?
RO: As I get deeper into my studies, begin to prepare for law school, and get closer to starting the Disney College Program, free time seems like a faraway dream. So I’m looking for help! The MouseLinked team is currently just Josh and me, but to continue the development at a pace that will keep the users happy, we would love for the team to really be a team. Any web developers with a passion for Disney who would like to join that team are invited to contact me on twitter @fluffedmojo or message me on MouseLinked. Like I said, we have a long list of places we’d like to go.

In the immediate future, the MouseLinked network has grown to include my original website, YourHighwayintheSky.com, a blog which features regular articles from a group of Disney Bloggers. Your Highway in the Sky is a part of the Magical Blogorail group and we hope the site can help spur discussion within the Disney community, whether on MouseLinked or elsewhere. Check it out!

Bonus question: If you were a Disney Character, which one would you be?
RO: Now THIS is a question. I would be Peter Pan. Minus the tights, he’s a character I’ve always wanted to be like. What guy wouldn’t want to fight Pirates…and fly! And I’d never have to grow up…or take the LSAT. That’s a big plus for me.

If you’re a part of the Disney fan family, stop by MouseLinked today and join the community!

Disney Cruise Line Unveils New Disney Fantasy Guest Experiences

Disney Cruise Line Unveils New Disney Fantasy Guest Experiences

The Disney Fantasy, the new Disney Cruise Line ship set to debut next spring, will bring to life many of the innovative features guests love on the recently launched Disney Dream including AquaDuck — the world’s first shipboard water coaster.  But new design elements and guest experiences will give the Fantasy an identity all its own.

The Disney Fantasy is the second of two newly designed Disney Cruise Line ships that take the family cruise experience to new heights. Sister ship to the Disney Dream, which entered service in January 2011, the 4,000-passenger Disney Fantasy will sail week-long Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral, Fla., with its maiden voyage scheduled for March 31, 2012.

See below for pictures.

“Animation Magic” at Animator’s Palate

Animator’s Palate on the Disney Fantasy brings the magic of Disney animation into the dining room with a new show called “Animation Magic.”  The dinner show celebrates the magic of Disney animation and allows families to create and participate in a whole new way.
Like Animator’s Palate on the Disney Dream, the venue is wall-to-wall whimsy inspired by a classic animation studio. Throughout the restaurant, pillars are fashioned like huge pencils and brushes. Character sketches, maquettes (three-dimensional character models), film strips and other tools of the animation trade adorn the room.  As a special nod to Mickey Mouse, the dining room chairs feature red and yellow colors and a trademark design – Mickey Mouse pants with two bright yellow buttons.
Upon entering Animator’s Palate, guests are surrounded by artwork featuring their favorite Disney characters.  Guests get a sneak peek into the origins of these beloved characters through concept art, storyboards and character studies.
As guests are seated at their tables, they are invited to draw a character of their own using a simple template on their placemat.  Then, just before dinner, house lights dim and a sprinkling of pixie dust illuminates the room.
Imagery is revealed on several large monitors showing animated, black and white drawings of Mickey Mouse.  Mickey then places the Sorcerer’s hat upon his head which transforms him, as well as all of the other pencil drawings shown throughout the room, from black and white to color.
Mickey then invites guests to sit back, relax and enjoy a taste of animation as a montage of memorable food-themed moments from Disney and Pixar films set to “Be Our Guest” begins to delight guests.  After the “Be Our Guest” number is complete, animated curtains are drawn on the monitors for a brief intermission. During this time, guests are encouraged to complete their own drawings, if they have not already done so, so they may be whisked off to Mickey Mouse who is conjuring a magical final act.
While guests enjoy dinner, the restaurant’s walls fill with classic Disney and Pixar characters gathering food, eating and drinking together, and celebrating over meals.

After dinner, the animated curtains are opened on the screens and Sorcerer Mickey returns for the exciting finale.  With a flourish and musical crescendo, Mickey works magic as only Disney can do.  Mickey conjures the guests’ drawings – now fully animated and brought to life – into the onscreen action.
A parade starts as Mickey leads the guests’ drawings in a march across the screens around the dining room.  The animation of the drawings becomes increasingly more elaborate, and then the drawings step into scenes from beloved Disney movies and skip, skate and dance side-by-side with characters such as Mickey Mouse, Jiminy Cricket, Cinderella and Snow White.
At the conclusion of the show, Mickey returns to say “so long” to the guests and, as he does, credits roll on screen showing each guest’s name listed as a guest animator. To commemorate the experience, each guest will have their character drawing returned to them, with an added touch… a golden seal proclaiming them an Official Disney Animator.

Europa Nighttime Entertainment District

On the Disney Fantasy, adult guests step into a world that’s all their own at Europa – a nighttime entertainment district exclusively for guests 18 and older that features sophisticated bars and trendy lounges inspired by the very best in European travel.

  • La Piazza is a lounge that draws inspiration from Italian cities and their decorative outdoor plazas. The bar is modeled after a colorful vintage carousel. Venetian masks, romantic couples’ booths and a classic Vespa with a sidecar add Italian flair.
  • Skyline is a chic bar that provides ever-changing birds-eye views of stunning European city skylines that transform from day to night. Skyline’s “windows to the world” give guests a glimpse of spectacular locales in panorama such as Paris, London, Barcelona, Athens and St. Petersburg.
  • O’Gill’s Pub is a rollicking Irish bar with modern-day twists.  Dark woods, brass accents and a selection of Irish beers create the perfect pub atmosphere where guests can sip a pint while watching live sporting events on one of several high-definition televisions.
  • Ooh La La is inspired by an elegant French boudoir adorned with velvet tufted walls, Victorian furniture and Louis XIV-style chaise lounges. A sensuous color palette is accented with ornate framed mirrors, gold details and a “jewel box” feature bar backed with sparkling diamond-like facets.
  • The Tube transports guests to a vibrant metropolitan club via the London Underground. Guests “mind the gap” as they walk across a Tube route map, lounge among mod furniture, pose by a red English phone booth, dance atop an illuminated Union Jack dance floor and enjoy cocktails at a bar inspired by Big Ben and London’s many train stations.

“Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular”

A new ship means new main stage entertainment at the 1,340-seat Walt Disney Theatre.  New to Disney Cruise Line, “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” takes the stage on the Disney Fantasy.  During this Broadway-style production, guests laugh along with the wise-cracking Genie and the cast from the classic animated Disney film, “Aladdin.”

In this fast-paced musical comedy, Aladdin is back as the “street rat” of Agrabah meeting up with a Genie who grants him three wishes, battling the evil Jafar, and falling in love with Princess Jasmine.
Many of the classic scenes and songs from the movie are re-created on stage and some of the action even spills out into the aisles, like Prince Ali’s jubilant arrival in Agrabah on the back of a stallion. Magic lamps, wise-cracking genies, princesses and evil wizards are all part of this musical production. And of course, an Aladdin production would not be complete without a magic flying carpet scene, which combines mechanical wizardry with state-of-the-art projections, allowing Jasmine and Aladdin to soar as they perform a heartfelt duet of “Whole New World.”
Many of the songs from the movie are featured in the 45-minute musical production, including “Friend Like Me,” which is performed as a lively, Las Vegas-style production number featuring special effects, illusions and more than a dozen dancing genies. Composer Alan Menken, who created the original soundtrack with songwriters Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, composed an original song for the stage production entitled “To Be Free.”

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

At Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique on the Disney Fantasy, aspiring young princesses and pirates receive the full fairy tale treatment with pixie-dusted and piratical makeovers at this very special salon.
When young princesses-to-be make their royal entrance at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, they are greeted by their very own Fairy Godmother-in-training who transform them with magical makeovers such as the Disney Diva, the Pop Princess or the Fairy Tale Princess. A variety of royal treatment packages include combinations of hairstyle, shimmering makeup and nails. Princess costumes, complete with crown, wand and shoes also are available.
Exclusive to Disney Cruise Line, Captain Mickey Mouse, Princess Minnie Mouse and First Mate Minnie Mouse makeovers plus special Under the Sea packages will be offered.
On pirate party nights aboard the Disney Fantasy, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique transforms into the Pirate’s League, where swashbuckling boys, girls and grownups can get ready for the pirate life.
Each guest checking in at the plunder-filled pirate’s lair gets an official pirate name.  Then it’s off to Muster Station for applications of beards and bandanas, swords and scars, earrings and eye patches – all done with the savvy skill of a pirate master who shares his own tales of sea-sailing adventures.
After the new buccaneers recite a sacred pirate oath, they are officially part of Captain Jack’s motley crew, leaving their old identities behind.  The shipmates and scoundrels are then turned loose on their pirate vessel.
Guests can choose from two pirate packages – First Mate (includes bandana, facial scars tattoos, fake teeth, earring, eye patch, sword and sheath) or Empress (includes bandana, shimmering makeup, face gem, tattoos, nail polish, earring, eye patch, sword and sheath).

Atrium Lobby – Mademoiselle Minnie Mouse

The magnificent three-deck atrium lobby on the Disney Fantasy is reminiscent of grand ocean liners of the Golden Age.  Art Nouveau-inspired details and patterns in hues of vibrant blue, green, pink and gold lend to the sophistication.  Glamorous and graceful design elements include a sweeping grand staircase, towering fluted columns, grand piano and an exquisite marble and stone inlay floor. A focal point is a cascading chandelier of stained glass and crystal beads.
The pièce de résistance of the magnificent space is the atrium lobby statue – Mademoiselle Minnie Mouse.  Inspired by travel of the 1920s and 1930s, Minnie, cast in bronze and dressed in vintage fashion with a parasol and steamer luggage at her side, serves to welcome all guests who board the ship.

Royal Court Restaurant

At Royal Court restaurant, guests are immersed in the lavish surroundings of an elegant dining room fit for a grand palace.  Royal Court takes design inspiration from the classic Disney films “Cinderella,” “Snow White,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Sleeping Beauty.”  Décor features ornate details and custom furnishings and fixtures that incorporate iconic symbols from the films – glass slippers, apples, roses and tiaras.
An Austrian glass chandelier is a focal point, while eight custom brass and glass lighting fixtures modeled after Cinderella’s coach adorn the room.  Hand-crafted mosaic tile murals of the princesses – Cinderella, Snow White, Belle, Jasmine, Ariel and Sleeping Beauty (Aurora) – and their princes grace the walls.  Inspired by the mosaic tile murals in Cinderella Castle at the Magic Kingdom, the Disney Fantasy mosaics are being meticulously created by skilled Italian craftspeople using more than 200,000 individual tiles, with 23 mosaic panels depicting six different vignettes.
With careful attention to detail, many of the restaurant’s features are modeled precisely from the inspirational films. The Royal Court’s chandeliers, chair backs and columns with marble bases and fluted tops are fashioned after those seen in “Beauty and the Beast.”  Wall sconces, decorative patterns, throne-style chairs and the circular floor plan are recreated from “Cinderella.”

The Disney Fantasy will depart on her maiden voyage March 31, 2012, and will sail out of Port Canaveral on seven-night Caribbean itineraries – alternating eastern (St. Maarten and St. Thomas) and western (Grand Cayman, Costa Maya, Cozumel). Special Eastern Caribbean sailings in November and December 2012 stop at St. Thomas and San Juan, Puerto Rico.  All Disney Fantasy itineraries include a stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.
Rates for the seven-night Caribbean cruise itineraries on the Disney Fantasy start at $959 per person for a standard inside stateroom, based on double occupancy.  All pricing reflects a category 11C standard inside stateroom, Government Taxes and Fees not included.

Aerosmith Guitarist Joe Perry Rocks with Goofy and Guests

While Disney’s Hollywood Studios was abuzz last week with all-things-Star Tours, there also was an electric (guitar) feeling in the air along Sunset Blvd., as Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry made a surprise visit to the roller coaster bearing his band’s famous name.

The legendary musician, who recalled riding Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith dozens of times with guests on its opening day in 1999, posed with Goofy in front of the four-story-tall, iconic guitar in the attraction’s courtyard.

Disney Gives $1.2 Million to Benefit Central Florida’s Children

Disney Gives $1.2 Million to Benefit Central Florida’s Children

Arriving at the Hope CommUnity Center with a Disney grant for $41,000, Walt Disney World cast members awarded the organization its top grant this morning as it marked the end of a 40-day celebration to surprise, recognize and reward organizations that improve the lives of local children.

Since April 13, Walt Disney World has given more than $1.2 million in Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants on its journey across Central Florida to shine a spotlight on organizations that educate, develop and care for local youth.

“This year, in honor of Disney’s 40-year history in Central Florida, we decided to celebrate with 40-days of giving back to our community,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of Walt Disney World Community Relations. “We are proud of all of Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants recipients. Through their tireless efforts, these deserving organizations are building a brighter future for Central Florida’s children and us all.”

For the second year in a row, Hope CommUnity Center received the top application-based Disney Helping Kids Shine Grant – the Bob Allen Outstanding Community Service Award. Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney World Resort President Meg Crofton and members of the Allen family were on hand to give $41,000 to the nonprofit’s Youth Empowerment Program.

“Our founder, Walt Disney, believed very much in celebrating the potential of children and recognizing the responsibility of adults to help shape young lives,” said Crofton. “Here at the Hope CommUnity Center, the Youth Empowerment Program strengthens the academic and emotional well-being of youth so they become active in their families and their community. I’d say Walt would be very proud to know we have selected this program as a model of excellence.”

Walt Disney World annually gives Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants to organizations that demonstrate alignment with Disney’s goal of improving children’s lives by focusing on one or more of the following areas: connecting with adults, character development, constructive use of free time and compassion. Of the more than 130 charities that applied for Disney grants this year, 62 were selected to receive funding for their programs.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Marks 10 Years of Conservation Leadership

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Marks 10 Years of Conservation Leadership

While guests may visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge to experience the more than 200 animals from 30 different species roaming across 46 lush acres, the generosity of those guests has also funded conservation projects that extend far beyond the savannahs of the resort hotel.

Since Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge opened its doors ten years ago, the merchandise shops at the resort hotel have cumulatively raised more than $390,000 in donations from guests for the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund (DWCF), more than any other resort location.

The Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund was established on Earth Day in 1995 as a global awards program for the study and protection of the world’s wildlife and ecosystems. It provides annual awards to U.S. nonprofit conservation organizations working alongside their peers in other countries. Many of the recipient organizations concentrate their activities on “biological hotspots” – areas rich in plant and animal life at risk of imminent destruction.

The DWCF mission resonates with guests who visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, now a AAA Four-Diamond rated resort hotel that was designed with environmentally-conscious guests in mind.

“Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge demonstrates the importance of understanding our guests,” said Kevin Myers, vice president of resort operations at Walt Disney World Resort. “We knew when we built Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, there was a segment of guests with a passion for the environment who would want to stay in a resort hotel whose design focused on animals, culture and conservation in addition to having amenities traditionally associated with a deluxe hotel.”

Funds raised from guests at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge have gone toward important DWCF efforts around the world, from protecting lions in Africa to projects closer to home, including efforts to protect the Northern Jaguar in Mexico and last year’s rapid response grants to rehabilitate thousands of sea turtles along Florida’s Gulf Coast that were affected by a winter cold snap.

Myers points out that a commitment to conservation and the environment extends to each of the 24 resort hotels Walt Disney World Resort. All are certified Green Lodges by the Florida Green Lodging Program.

That commitment to the environment in lodging and the especially strong conservation themes that run through Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge are all part of an environmental legacy handed down by Walt Disney himself.

In fact, during the grand opening ceremonies for Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge ten years ago, the late Roy E. Disney remarked, “They [Walt Disney and Roy O. Disney] would have been thrilled with what has been created here and would have thought it a wonderfully appropriate addition to their company.”

“A lot of young people think the future is closed to them, that everything has been done. This is not so. There are still plenty of avenues to be explored.” – Walt Disney

Next week, my baby boy will graduate from high school. This is a bitter-sweet time for me as I realize that the long chapter in my life of raising three children is coming to an end. Still, I look forward to what he will become and how he has his whole future ahead of him to make of it what he will. Feeling so nostalgic of the past and yet looking forward to the future reminds me of a great man who invested in the future of the youth of the 1950s; one in particular.

Walt Disney was what people have referred to as a “nostalgic futurist.” He absolutely treasured the past, which you can see every time you visit Main Street USA or Frontierland; but he was also very concerned about tomorrow. In his latter years, he became increasingly interested in preparing the next generation for the future. He and his brother, Roy, invested money in schools like CalArts, but his conviction to this was much more hands-on than donating money to schools.

In fact,Walt was so interested in trying to help the youth of the 1950s succeed in the future, that he called the Drama teacher at Santa Monica High School and asked her for the names of promising students in the graduating class. She gave him the name of Ken Wales.Walt personally invited Ken Wales to come and be his guest at the studio. For an entire week, Ken met, worked, and ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner with Walt Disney. Walt mentored Ken, showing him everything about filmmaking.

Today, Ken says that he learned a valuable lesson from Walt and that was “that we should not merely dream big – we should dream beautifully.” In How to Be Like Walt, by Pat Williams, Ken is quoted as saying that “Walt’s films are timeless because they are full of imagination, values, warmth and delight.”

After spending the week together, Walt awarded Ken with the first Walt Disney four-year scholarship to study filmmaking at USC. Ken graduated with honors from the School of Cinema at The University of Southern California. He has had a very successful career and has continued to pay forward the investment by teaching upcoming filmmakers.

Basically, what Walt gave Ken was a headstart on a bright, successful future. But this wasn’t just a headstart. Walt invested his time and energy into something he truly believed in. The gift isn’t always in what you know, but your ability and willingness to share it with others. Ken was very appreciative to Walt, and they remained friends for years to come.

As my son graduates, I think of what a dream it must have been for Ken’s parents to have someone like Walt Disney invest in their son’s future. I wish every child could have someone thoughtfully helping them along in accomplishing their goals for the future. Knowing absolutely nothing about astronomy, I have actually been Josh’s student as he shares his interest in space with me.

Walt had a gift to mentor, teach, train and coach young people toward the success of the future of our world. I wish that everyone who possesses a vast knowledge of a particular subject would take Walt’s lead and mentor a student. Walt involved himself in the lives of people; he lived for the next generation.

For my son, Josh, I will share the advice Ken learned through his wonderful experience with Walt. Don’t merely dream big – dream beautifully! I love you so much, son. Congratulations!

And they all lived happily ever after – or so everyone was led to believe. Emma Swan knows how to take care of herself. She’s a 28-year-old bail bonds collector who’s been on her own ever since she was abandoned as a baby. But when the son she gave up years ago finds her, everything starts to change. Henry is now 10 years old and in desperate need of Emma’s help. He believes that Emma actually comes from an alternate world and is Snow White and Prince Charming’s missing daughter.

According to his book of fairytales, they sent her away to protect her from the Evil Queen’s curse, which trapped the fairytale world forever, frozen in time, and brought them into our modern world. Of course Emma doesn’t believe a word, but when she brings Henry back to Storybrooke, she finds herself drawn to this unusual boy and his strange New England town. Concerned for Henry, she decides to stay for a while, but she soon suspects that Storybrooke is more than it seems. It’s a place where magic has been forgotten, but is still powerfully close… where fairytale characters are alive, even though they don’t remember who they once were.
