The Drive Down: What to Pack, What to Bring

Welcome to Florida
Welcome to Florida!

Are you road trippin’ to Walt Disney World for the big 40th Anniversary celebration? My husband and oldest son do not like to fly, so four out of the five times we’ve been to Walt Disney World, we have driven the 18-hour trek from Texas.

The first year, 2006, my kids were 9 months, almost 3, and 11. We left about 9:00 PM and drove through the night, stopping only for gasoline and bathroom breaks, as well as diaper changes and baby feedings (I was nursing the baby at the time). We stopped at Cracker Barrel for breakfast. Good food, clean restrooms, a fun shop and a rousing round of checkers, then back in the car til we reached another about 4 hours down the highway.

Each trip has been a little different, except for the Cracker Barrel obsession, but we’ve found these general “road rules” get us there and back pretty smoothly.

  1. Get some good rest before you leave. Even if you’re too excited to sleep the night before, try to close your eyes and let your body relax.
  2. Pack a small cooler with caffeinated beverages to keep the driver alert, and bottles of water and/or juice boxes for the passengers.
  3. Keep a box of snacks handy. No need to pack too much, because you can always stop at a convenience store en route to replenish the supply.
  4. Provide younger kids a backpack of small toys and crafts. Some hobby shops sell lap trays designed for car travel to keep crayons, etc., from rolling off.
  5. If your vehicle is not equipped, buy or borrow a portable DVD player and bring with you lots of movies or videos. Make sure you also pick up a headphone splitter and multiple earphones to allow several passengers to tune in together.
  6. Bring an iPod loaded with the kids’ favorite Disney music.
  7. If you’ve got little bitties, stock up on diapers, wipes and other baby necessities.
  8. Older kids will likely text all the way to Florida, so remind them to bring their cell phone chargers.
  9. Have paper towels ready to clean up the inevitable spills and a trash bag to clear away the mess.
  10. And anti-bacterial hand sanitizer is a must. After all, Cracker Barrel’s only open from 6:00 AM til 10:00 PM. Some of those after hour rest stops just don’t compare!

Basically, drive until you need a break. Trade drivers so noone gets too sleepy to drive safely. Load up on the things that will prevent “I’m bored!” and too much “Are we there yet?” from being uttered from the back seat. Enjoy the scenery. Sightsee. Play car games, like mapping out all the Cracker Barrels you hit along the way. Most of all, relax and keep in mind that your destination is the Most Magical Place on Earth!

What do you pack for your road trip?

Oldies But Goodies – How Ambitious Should Your Vacation Plans Be?

Oldies But Goodies - How Ambitious Should Your Vacation Plans Be?

This is one of those questions that only you can answer for yourselves my Oldie pals!!! The answer depends mostly on your stamina and any mobility issues, but since most mobility issues are easily dealt with at Walt Disney World stamina becomes the major consideration. I generally plan to get a lot out of each and every visit but also plan a pace that allows time to recuperate from busy busy days. Our next visit will be a real test because the schedule is verrrrrry full and my stamina is down a bit from our last trip. I’ll let you know how I did when I get back.

The conventional wisdom says that you should schedule a daily break or at least go back to your resort for a quick dip in the pool but that is not always possible. Another approach would be to make sure each third or fourth day of your visit is a non theme park day or a sleep in with a short park day. Since we Oldies generally like to go to sleep early and get up early another plan would be to hit each park visit at rope drop and leave early rather than closing the park. And yes, one more, schedule lots of table service meals so you can sit down, relax in an air conditioned setting, and enjoy a good meal.

You don’t have to do all of the things I mentioned or even just one of them. You can combine any or all of them on different days, get your rest and enjoy some new Walt Disney World experiences at the same time. Please don’t try to go commando touring every day of your visit unless you are capable of this kind of pace. Also, if you are traveling with other Oldies please consider their needs and tour at the pace of your slowest buddy. Plan what you want to accomplish but don’t be afraid to cancel some of those plans if fatigue becomes an issue.

If you take take the time for some types of breaks every day you will absolutely find that you will get that much more enjoyment out of Walt Disney World. If you don’t get your rest, even if you visit every attraction, you will likely not enjoy or get the most out of all of them. A well rested Oldie is a Happy Oldie!!! As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Chimpanzees Receive Emergency Support from the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund

The Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund is responding immediately to needs of the Jane Goodall Institute and the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance to protect endangered chimpanzees in Africa.

The Jane Goodall Institute was awarded $5,000 for veterinary supplies to vaccinate chimpanzees and staff against a dangerous measles outbreak at the Tchimpounga Sanctuary in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Chimpanzees are highly susceptible to human diseases, and the high cost of vaccines for 146 chimpanzees and 60 staff members jeopardized the team’s ability to cope with future medical emergencies.

The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) was also awarded $3,000 to assist in the relocation of four orphaned chimpanzees confiscated from smugglers in Sudan. The chimpanzees, Cocoa, Minni, Sarah, and Medina, are all orphans of bushmeat trade and are believed to have been smuggled from the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are too young to be able to care for themselves but Minni and the others are adjusting well to their new sanctuary home in Uganda. DWCF helped cover the cost of air travel to relocate the chimpanzees from Sudan to Uganda.

The Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund Rapid Response Fund provides emergency funding to wildlife and wild places in the aftermath of disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and disease outbreaks.  Since the beginning of 2011, DWCF has contributed more than $40,000 to emergency relief efforts worldwide including repairing an educational walkway damaged in a storm in Zimbabwe to allow for continued youth conservation education efforts, and supporting the needs of the International Primatological Society and Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums following the devastating earthquake in Japan.  The funding for these emergency grants has been provided through a partnership with Disney’s Friends for Change and iTunes, thanks to several anthems created by stars from the Disney Channel.  Coinciding with the premiere of the most recent song by Bridgit Mendler, “We can Change the World,” Disney contributed $250,000 to the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to help the planet when it needs it most.

Disney Registers Domain of Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’; Is a Movie on the Way?

It looks like there has been some movement on the long gesturing ‘Doctor Strange’ movie at Marvel. Disney has just recently begun to register domains for many of  the properties we know to be on the way, including ‘The Avengers’, ‘Iron Man 3’, and ‘Thor 2’, but in the mix was ‘Doctor Strange’. Writers had been hired over a year ago to work on a draft of the script for Marvel, and it was just turned into a few months ago to the studio. Marvel still has two mystery projects scheduled for 2014, so there is a good chance that ‘Doctor Strange’ could be one of them.

Six Attractions at Disneyland Resort Closing for Refurbishments

Six Attractions at Disneyland Resort Closing for Refurbishments

Six of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure’s attractions have been closed/are going to temporarily close for some refurbishments.

Pirates of the Caribbean, Blue Bayou restaurant, and California Screamin’ are all closed at the moment. Pirates and Blue Bayou closed back in September and will be closed until November 23 after lots of routine maintenance.

Over in California Adventure, the California Screamin’ rollercoaster is currently closed for routine maintenance. The only looping coaster in either of the parks is scheduled to reopen on October 15. The Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, which was recently re-themed to “Up”, is closed through October 28 for routine maintenance.

A couple of attractions are on the schedule to close soon: it’s a small world and the it’s tough to be a bug! attraction. it’s a small world will be receiving its holiday overlay. It is scheduled to close October 24 and is scheduled to reopen November 10. it’s tough to be a bug! will be down for some routine maintenance October 24 to November 11.

It’s been strange seeing Pirates and Blue Bayou closed for such a long period of time. I’ve definitely missed seeing Captain Jack. I’ve had no motivation to really visit California Adventure since Screamin’ has been closed. (Plus it doesn’t help that it’s a maze to get into the park.) I’m glad the time has come for it’s a small world to receive its holiday overlay because our writer Patrick has never been to Disneyland during Christmastime, and it’s the only time of year I can stand going on the ride. (Sorry, Patrick — I KNOW you hate it but you’re going to have to endure it because it’s the Christmas version.)

What do you think of all of these closings — are they cutting out any beloved attractions during your visit? Are they making the other attractions more crowded? Or do you just not care? I want to know what you think. Let me know in the comments below.

Create Your Own Disney Halloween Pumpkins

One of my favorite things to do during Halloween Time at Disneyland park is to look for all of the carved pumpkins up and down Main Street, U.S.A. Have you ever wished you could create magical Halloween pumpkins of your own? David Caranci, manager of Resort Enhancement at the Disneyland Resort, has given us some not-too-spooky Halloween pumpkin-carving templates featuring some faces you may recognize!

David’s steps to successfully carving your Halloween pumpkin using the Disney character templates:
These instructions work for both artificial and real pumpkins.

  • Chose your Disney character template.
  • Enlarge or shrink your template to fit the size of your pumpkin.
  • Cut around the template, reducing the paper size to include only the features to be sculpted.
  • Tape or pin the template on to your pumpkin.
  • Draw over the template with a pencil, pen or store bought template tool.
  • Remove template from pumpkin.
  • You should see indentation lines on your pumpkin highlighting the features to be sculpted.
  • Using a safe pumpkin sculpting tool, slowly begin to sculpt your Disney character face.
  • As you sculpt, stop and look often to ensure eyes, nose and mouth are in proportion.
  • Remember to sculpt a hole under your pumpkin to insert a LED candle.

U.S. Family Enjoyed Trip of a Lifetime to Rapunzel’s Royal Celebration at Kensington Palace in London

U.S. Family Enjoyed Trip of a Lifetime to Rapunzel's Royal Celebration at Kensington Palace in London

Disney made the dreams of the Senio family from Centreville, Va., come true by awarding them the grand prize in the “Your Princess Moment — The Story Begins With You” video contest. Along with their mother, Laurie Senio, the three little girls, Alli (age 8), Sammi (age 7) and Katie (age 3), were whisked away on a dream vacation fit for a princess — a trip for four to London to join the celebration as Rapunzel was officially welcomed as the 10th Disney Princesscharacter on October 2 at Kensington Palace.

The family received front row seats to the high profile, star-studded celebration and watched as Rapunzel was welcomed to the Disney Princess royal court by Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, Snow White and Tiana. The family also joined more than 100 other little princesses from across the globe as they took part in all the festivities, including a procession through Kensington Park, party activities and a welcoming ceremony.

The three Senio sisters are all Disney fans and their video captured the essence of the princess moment represented by Rapunzel’s royal celebration. Their winning video was selected from several hundred entries.

According to their mother, the sisters have grown up loving Disney Princess films and the Disney Princess characters including Aurora, Tiana and the newest member of the Disney Princess royal court, Rapunzel.

“In the Disney Princess movies, the girls see that a girl can be kind, pretty and caring but still be smart, adventurous and stand up for herself,” said Senio. “This contest was a natural fit for our family. The girls were so excited to have this adventure. They woke up every morning asking if it was real. The actual event was so magical it felt like a dream had come true.”

Disney World Quick Tips – Tupperware

Disney World Quick Tips - Tupperware

Hey Moms!  Here is a Disney World Quick tip I use every time we stay at the Walt Disney World Resort

Keep your vanity area in your room tidy by packing along a few storage containers to keep your toiletries in.  Let’s face it, with kids (and even husbands) scurrying around in the mornings, little items such as hair clips, earrings and toothbrushes can get tossed just about anywhere.

Before you leave your room in the mornings, just toss all of the items in your storage tote and place them on the shelf in the bathroom.  It keeps everything organized and accessible.  It also allows for Mousekeeping to do a better job of cleaning that area of the room up!

It is always nice coming back to the resort room after a long day at the Park to a fresh clean room. Do yourself a favor and pick some cheap storage containers up for your next Walt Disney World vacation and give them a try!

Disney Food Confession: Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup

Disney Food Confession: Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup

Where To Find It:  At the Canada Kiosk during the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival

What is it? A wonderful blend of cheese, bacon, and beer that makes a really tasty snack.

Why You Want It: Because this is the same soup that is served in the acclaimed restaurant Le Cellier in the Canada Pavilion, and it has an incredible flavor!  My wife, niece, and I all sampled this, it costs $3.75 this year, and you get about a 3-4 ounce serving, so while small, the flavor hits you really nicely, and I felt like it was a great snack to enjoy!
