A Spooktacular in the Sky at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts

Happy HalloWishes Fireworks at Magic Kingdom ParkNo other fireworks displays in the world compare to the spectaculars we put on at Disney Parks, and some of my favorites are the special shows we do for seasonal events.

When my family and I attend Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party in Magic Kingdom Park each year, Happy HalloWishes is at the top of our must-see list. Inspired by The Haunted Mansion, the show uses the “Grim Grinning Ghosts” theme song and is narrated by that attraction’s Ghost Host, who invites some of the greatest Disney villains along for a round of “Scary-oke!” Everything builds toward an explosive, Scream-Along finale!

Happy HalloWishes was created in 2005 by our Creative Entertainment team, led by Steven Davison. They brought together amazing pyrotechnic effects with dramatic lighting, enveloping sound and animated projections on Cinderella Castle to create a completely unique experience for Halloween guests.

Halloween Screams Fireworks at Disneyland Park

A similar show, Halloween Screams, is also now a featured part of Mickey’s Halloween Party at Disneyland park. There, Jack Skellington serves as “Master of Scare-monies,” kicking off the festivities as his ghost dog Zero makes a special appearance in the sky above Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Whichever park you choose for Halloween fun, our fireworks tricks are sure to give you a treat!

Finding Romance at Disney!

Finding Romance at Disney!

To me, Walt Disney World is all about love — love for fun and for happy times with family in a magical place. It is the love in my heart for Walt Disney and the person he was, and the love for my family and having this time together It is the love I see in the eyes of a child when he runs to Mickey, the love in a father’s words when he tells his daughter she is a princess, and in a teen’s laughter when he is going 0-60 in 2.8 seconds.

Love is in the air at Walt Disney World. But did you know there is also romance at Walt Disney World? It is a perfect place to get married, spend your honeymoon, or spend Valentine’s Day with your honey. Actually, did you notice that vacation start dates of February 11-16, 2012 are included in Disney’s new free dining offer? Wouldn’t you love to take your sweetie to WDW for a magical cupid vacation? Well, if you are thinking about it (like I am) here is some information that could help you plan a romantic getaway for you and your special someone.

How can you find romance at Walt Disney World?
The easiest answer I can give you is that you find romance at WDW the same way you find it at home. According to Gary Chapman, you just have to follow one of “The Five Love Languages.” Every person responds to one or more of these five love languages: Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Physical Touch, Acts of Service, or Words of Affirmation. Whatever your sweetie’s love language is, speak it during your trip. Hopefully, you will receive the same in return. It is easy to incorporate each of these languages into a Walt Disney World trip. Here are some ideas:

Quality Time: nothing says, “I love you,” like full, undivided attention for someone whose love language is quality time. Speaking this language requires turning the TV off, putting the iPhone down, letting go of the work to be done, and spending real time with your sweetheart. If you are off on a Disney getaway as a Valentine gift for your honey, then you have already figured this out. Spend your time together, don’t plan any activities apart. Go out to dinner (for FREE) and talk and laugh like you used to.

Receiving Gifts: for a person with this love language, it is often not the cost of a gift that says “I love you” but the thought involved in choosing the gift. The thoughtfulness and effort is what speaks this language. If one of you responds to receiving gifts, plan to do some shopping during the trip. Surprise each other with a meaningful gift that will be cherished for years to come!

Physical Touch: this language is for people who like holding hands, hugging, etc. If this is your love language, it won’t even matter where you are, just make sure to hold hands and make eye contact during your time in the parks and during activities. Hugs speak volumes! Since this is a Disney blog I won’t go further than that but you can use your imagination when alone for Valentine’s Day in a beautiful resort I am sure.

Acts of Service: any act done to ease the burden of responsibility weighing on your sweetie will speak volumes. At home this might be doing the dishes, making dinner sometimes; but YAY you will be on vacation so there will be no need for that, especially since someone else will be making your meals and washing your dishes. Things you can do at Walt Disney World requires a bit more thought so here are a couple of ideas: go fill the refillable mugs with coffee in the morning while your sweetie sleeps in a bit, or give a massage or foot rub at the end of the day.

Words of Affirmation (Encouragement): it is not necessarily true that actions speak louder than words. In fact, for a person with this love language compliments mean more than actions.  Hearing the words, “I love you” can make their day, while insults can shatter their spirit. This is very important on a vacation when you are running here and there. Just be courteous and give compliments each day about each other. Don’t be critical or get onto each other for anything that goes wrong. Just focus on and enjoy the positives during the trip.

Other than specific ways you can speak your love languages, here are some general ideas for romance at Disney:

Take a walk!
You can ride the monorail to the Polynesian Resort and walk along the beach to the Grand Floridian Resort. Once you get there, you can have a drink at the outside bar or just sit and relax and enjoy time together.

Take a boat!
A boat outing is another way to get away from it all. You can take a ride on Bay Lake, or take the ferry from MK to the Transportation and Ticket Center and then to a monorail to the Contemporary and lay out in a hammock on the beach and watch the Electrical Water Pageant. Alternatively, you can take the boat that visits the Magic Kingdom, Contemporary, Wilderness Lodge and Ft. Wilderness, or the boat that visits the Polynesian, Grand Floridian and Magic Kingdom. Or you can cruise the loop around Crescent Lake, which visits Epcot, Boardwalk, Yacht/Beach Club, Swan/Dolphin, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios without going into the parks.

Take the monorail!
You can ride the monorail that circles the three Monorail resorts (Contemporary, Polynesian and Grand Floridian). You can get off and explore each resort, or just enjoy the ride and the view.

Take a dip!
Going for a late night dip in the hot tub at your resort is a romantic thing to do…when all is quiet and the moon is out.

Visit the BoardWalk
The Disney Boardwalk is a fun place to walk around and enjoy the atmosphere! There are some free and inexpensive things you can do at Disney’s BoardWalk, such as watching the street performers (jugglers, comedians, fire-eaters, jazz ensembles, etc.). You can also play carnival games at a small cost and win your honey a prize. Just walking around hand-in-hand can be very romantic.

Head Downtown
If you like shopping or just like being in a really cool and happening place, head to Downtown Disney.

There are quite a few romantic spots in Walt Disney World. Here are some tips for the parks:

Magic Kingdom: You can stay on Main Street at night, when everyone else has left and enjoy some quality time in front of the castle.

Epcot: Epcot has several romantic hideaways. In France, you can head down towards the Eiffel Tower, turn right and pass through the cosmetic and perfume shops, and you will come out into a private little garden with benches all around.

In Canada there is another lovely alcove. It is not so quiet, but the noise you hear isn’t from talking, but from the majestic falls. Many people don’t bother to go to the very top of the Canada Pavilion to see the falls, but there are several quiet spots tucked away in this area. Visit in the evening if you want to spend some time alone.

The United Kingdom is home to an enchanting tea garden designed with comfort in mind. Take a stroll and enjoy the flowers, or simply relax on one of the benches and savor a private moment.

World Showcase AFTER Illuminations is our favorite time there. If you find a bench as the multitude pours out of the park and just wait awhile, it gets empty. It’s so pretty and peaceful with the music playing and all the lights. It really makes for a nice stroll back to the front of the park.

These are just a few ideas for finding (and making) romance at Walt Disney World. There is no better place to “make magic” than the most magical place on earth. If you would like to plan a special cupid vacation for your sweetie, contact me at [email protected]. I would love to help make it extra special!

I NEED MORE ROOM! – Renting a house at Disney World

I NEED MORE ROOM! - Renting a house at Disney WorldIn my family we have four people. Two of them are under ten and don’t take up that much room. They’re past the age where they need five-hundred supplies just to survive, so as long as I stick to my PERFECT PACKING LIST our family unit meets the requirements to stay in just about any room at Walt Disney World. However, I always seem to feel crowded in my resort room (with the exception of the times I’ve stayed using Vacation Club points), and always long for just a little more privacy.

If I had baby #3  (which is NOT in the plan for me by the way) that means my options would become much more limited. You see, once you hit Five in your party your resort room possibilities are fewer, and usually end in you dropping SIGNIFICANTLY more money to stay “on-property” in places like the new Art of Animation Suites, Deluxe Villa, or a Cabin at Fort Wilderness. As blended families have become more common, this becomes an issue for parents and step-parents who want to bring ALL of the children to Disney at one time inexpensively. And even more commonly we bring grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, family friends on our trips. Which requires many more rooms. More rooms = more money.

Have you considered renting a house off property?

DIVA TIP – What I have learned is that at WDW what you don’t pay for in money, you pay for in time. So the more convenient something is the more it is likely to be expensive (the resorts on the monorail are a prime example). However, as long as you plan ahead being off property is not that bad.  If a house is 9 miles away from Animal Kingdom Parking lot (which you can determine by using Google maps) once you add in the tram-ride from the parking lot you’re pretty close to the same amount of time you would spend riding a bus from All Star Music Resort to that park (THAT’S ASSUMING YOU CATCH THE FIRST BUS!).

VRBO.com (Vacation Rentals by Owner) has a large collection of houses and condos available. If you follow THIS LINK it takes you to all the rentals available in the Central- Disney – Orlando area .

STEP 1. Determine is where you’d like to be and how close you want to be to Walt Disney World’s Main Gate and pick one of those areas. I’ve found Lake Buena Vista Celebration, and Kissimmee area has a TON of properties available for rental and they’re very close to Disney property.

STEP 2. Decide how many rooms you need. Don’t be afraid to give your kids their own bedroom 🙂

STEP 3. Type your trip dates in.

STEP 4 – Sort through the pictures and find houses that have the amenities you’d like within your price range. You will be shocked how many have their own pools and hot-tubs, free wi-fi, grills, and of course FULL kitchens (which can really save on dining with large groups!). 🙂

STEP 5 – Use the Email Owner Widget to get info about availability and price. Don’t be afraid to negotiate with them.

Just to show you an example. My family and I are renting a SIX BEDROOM, FOUR BATH house in Celebration, about 10 miles from Disney. The house sleeps 15 people, and has three master suites (a king-size, and two queen-size), and a double bedroom, a twin and a Disney themed bedroom with bunk beds. The living room has three leather sofas, a 52″ television, a dining room that will seat eight people. It also has an air-conditioned game room with a pool table, sofa and tv, lets not forget the laundry room which saves on packing!

I NEED MORE ROOM! - Renting a house at Disney WorldOh and did I mention the HEATED POOL and hot tub? Well don’t let me forget that!

I have a different Spring Break than my son does, so we’re actually needed accommodations for 14 days. My daughter and I will be there 4 days, then the boys will join us for 4 days, then we fly home and my husband and son stay for 6 more days.

For us to stay in a Value Resort (Pop Century) during those same 14 days the 1 bedroom for just the 4 of us would be $2,302 according to the wdw reservations site. If we went  a Moderate, like Port Orleans- Riverside, it would run me $3,303.00. Thats before you get a single park ticket or eat any food.

Grand total for my 6 bedroom vrbo.com rental for 14 days…$1990.00. That is correct, a sweet house for 300.00 LESS than 1 bedroom value resort.

And this is just ONE example of the kind of deals you can get on www.vrbo.com. We have friends who are joining us each of those weeks and helping defray some of the cost, so it will actually cost our family half of that. AND everybody has their own room.

Just something to consider before you book your next Disney Vacation and need more room. 🙂

Magic Kingdom to Test Dream Come True Parade Fastpass

Magic Kingdom to Test Dream Come True Parade Fastpass

This news comes to us from Touring Plans.

Beginning the week of October 23, 2011, Magic Kingdom will test offering FASTPASS tickets for a restricted-access viewing area for the afternoon Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade. The test will run for approximately one month.

Due to the limited size of the test’s viewing area (reportedly in the Castle Forecourt), few details are being shared regarding how guests will obtain these parade FASTPASS tickets. Word on the street is that there will be a “random selection” of guests.

I am not sure this is a good idea. I mean what is next Advanced Dining Reservations? Ride Fastpasses? I can go on and on 🙂

Let me know what you think in the comment box below.

Huge Success at the 3rd Annual Latin Food and Wine Festival

Huge Success at the 3rd Annual Latin Food and Wine Festival

As Hispanic Heritage Month came to an end this week, thousands gathered for the 3rd Annual Latin Food and Wine Festival, hosted by Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando (HCCMO). Disney proudly served as the presenting sponsor for the event and supports the HCCMO as a 2011 Trustee.

The two-day event began on Friday with Savor the Night, an evening filled with food, wine, signature drinks, silent auction, and entertainment. The sold-out event welcomed 300 guests on the rooftop of the Stirling Global Gallery at The Plaza in Downtown Orlando. On Saturday, nearly 20,000 guests and vendors gathered from across Central Florida to attend the Grand Tasting at the Cranes Roost Park in Altamonte Springs.

“One of the main purposes for having this event is to recognize the delicious Latin influenced food and beverage businesses here in Central Florida,” said Ramon Ojeda, President of the HCCMO. “It is our goal to not only recognize these businesses and give them the exposure and recognition they deserve, but to also bring them more customers.”

Morning EMH vs. Evening EMH — Which is the best?

Morning EMH vs. Evening EMH -- Which is the best?
Mickey & Minnie riding Dumbo at Walt Disney World

When it comes to your Walt Disney World vacation, there are a lot of benefits to staying on property, but perhaps the best benefit of all is the benefit of getting the Extra Magic Hours.  If you have never stayed on property before at Walt Disney World, the extra magic hours are extra times that a park is open on a given day or night that only Walt Disney World resort guests can utilize.  The key is that only one park a day will have either morning or evening extra magic hours, not all of them, so you should use this as a means to decide which park you want to see on a particular day of your vacation.  If you stay off property, you aren’t allowed to get the extra hours.

When it comes to extra magic hours, the debate rages over which is better — morning extra magic hours, or evening?  In this writers opinion, the evening extra magic hours win hands down! The biggest reason for this for me is that morning extra magic hours are only for one hour early, so if your park opens at 9:00 AM, and it has morning EMH, then it will open at 8:00 AM.  However, if your park has evening EMH, and it closes at 11:00 PM on that particular night, the evening hours will allow the park to stay open until 2:00 AM the next morning!  This is because the evening EMH are for three extra hours, not just one.

The photo at the beginning of this post was taken on the first time that my family had ever experienced evening extra magic hours.  On June 20th, 2010, the Magic Kingdom had evening extra magic hours, so we decided that our daughter was old enough to experience the thrill of that, and we stayed out late.  Little did we know that Mickey and Minnie were going to be paying the park a visit, and we were able to see them while they were riding the Dumbo ride with two very lucky guests!  This picture was taken on June 21st, 2010, at 12:06 AM, during the extra magic hours window.

Obviously, evening extra magic hours are not for everyone.  If you have small children, then it’s a no-brainer that you are going to utilize the morning extra magic hours rather than the evening.  However, if that is not a factor in your decision, give the evening extra magic hours a try.  The park is less crowded, the night weather (even during the middle of summer) is quite enjoyable, and the park you are visiting takes on a special magical vibe that can sometimes be missing when it’s 100 degrees at 3PM and the crowd calendar has the crowd level at 8.0 out of 10!  We had a great time that night, and I look forward to the next time we can enjoy an evening extra magic hour time slot!

The best place to discover what the hours are for Walt Disney World (and also which park has extra magic hours on a given night) is to check out the Disney World Park Hours.

However, this is just this writer’s opinion, so tell me, which do you prefer?

Projector

SideBySide is a novel interactive system that allows multiple people to play and work together using handheld projectors at any time and anyplace. The system is immediate and simple: users simply project onto a surface and their projection becomes aware and responsive to other projections nearby. Interaction can range from projector-based games, such as boxing with projected characters, to everyday tasks such as exchanging contact information by ‘dragging and dropping’ onto another user’s projection.

Disney Research Side by Side Interactive Hand Held Projectors

Importantly, SideBySide does not require any fixed sensing in the environment and can be used anywhere: at home, at the office, or even inside the car during long road trips. The system consists of a hybrid mobile projector that outputs both visible and invisible projections at the same time. The invisible projection contains tracking data that can be recognized by the device camera, allowing accurate location tracking of multiple projections and lightweight communication between devices.

Adult “Treats” at Walt Disney World

Adult “Treats” at Walt Disney World

Halloween is approaching and Tricks and Treats are everywhere you turn! Most adults I know aren’t so much into traditional “Tricks or Treats”, but I think they can all agree that when at Disney World, its important to “Treat” yourself to something awesome. Try some of these activities that are sure to be a treat any time of the year:

Victoria and Alberts: Splurge on this 6 course meal where wine pairings are made from an award winning cellar. The wine isn’t the only thing winning awards here – the restaurant is an 11-year recipient of the prestigious AAA Five Diamond Award, and is arguably one of the best restaurants in all of Florida. And if you want something even more special than that, they do a private dinner with the head chef at the Chef’s Table. If food is your thing, then you better make reservations for Victoria and Albert’s right away!

Wine and Dine: In addition to Disney’s Dining Plans, which make mealtime a breeze, you can add on the “Wine and Dine” plan, which allots you 1 bottle of wine per night per room. Many restaurants at Walt Disney World offer a large selection of wines, and they always have staff who can assist in choosing the right wine to compliment your meal. For more information on the Wine and Dine plan and locations where you can redeem your wine credits, check out Disney’s Official Dining Plan webpage

Souvenirs: Disney offers more than just stuffed animals and Mickey ear hats (which are actually cute on anyone and do come in adult sizes, in case you were wondering). Some of Disney’s finest shopping can be had at Downtown Disney’s World of Disney store. There, you will find everything from t-shirts to hats to kitchen accessories to dishes to watches and fine jewelry. If you’re looking for something a little classier to bring home as a reminder of your WDW vacation, try a Mickey wine stopper (comes in silver or blinged out with rhinestones!), A Mickey spatula, or a Mickey hand pot holde. Downtown Disney’s The Days of Christmas store has plenty of special and unique ornaments too, so you can be reminded of all the fun you had at WDW every Christmas!

Carriage Ride: Take a romantic ride on a horse drawn carriage through Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter Resort or Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. It’s cozy, its relaxing, and a bonus for this visiting during Halloween time – they also do a haunted version. Check out details here

Downtown Disney: Not only is it a great place to shop or eat any time of the day, but at night it really comes alive, with bars and clubs and live jazz at the House of Blues, it really is a great place to come for dinner, then take in the Cirque Du Soleil show La Nouba (which is a show unique to WDW, you won’t find it anywhere else!), then finish off the night with a few drinks and some dancing and live music.

Hey, you’re on vacation, TREAT yourself to something special, different, and fun. No matter what you do, it’s all a treat, since you are vacationing at the happiest place on earth!
