Disney World Training 101 – Picking the best months to save

Disney World Training 101 - Picking the best months to save

This year marks the first year we have decided to get an Annual Pass for Walt Disney World. Most times we go once a year and go all out by getting deluxe dining and a moderate resort. We use up our entire tax check (and then some) to pay for our yearly pilgrimage to the House of Mouse. With the birth of our newest DD (Disney Daughter) we haven’t been able to get to Disney World since Jan of 2010. Probably one of the longest stretches for me being a Florida State resident in years past.

So having not been in so long I felt it was justification for 2 vacations less than 6 months apart (Sept 2011 & Jan 2012). But like most people my wife and I work for a living. Believe it or not but I do Chip and Co for the love of the Disney and don’t really make a ton of money off my banner ads we run. I try to not flood the site with ads like some Disney sites out there and really use them to pay for our server and my other websites I host and run.

So with 2 vacations coming up shortly and a tax check that was not going to cover 3 Annual Passes, Room, and Food. What were we to do?

Our saving grace (which is our newest DD’s middle name) was the bonus paychecks we get.

What Chip you get bonus checks at work?

Not hardly. These bonus checks come on months that have 5 Fridays!

Being the uber nerd I am we have a budget that we try to stick to. Its a neat Google doc and if you have seen my Planning Spreadsheets you can get an idea what our budget looks like.

So on months that we have a bonus paycheck we take a big chunk and make a payment to Disney for our trip. This year we are rolling it in savings till I buy our AP’s and Tables in Wonderland card. In the remaining months of 2011 there are 3 more bonus paycheck months. July, Sept, and December.

My plan is to use our July bonus check to pay for the AP’s. September Bonus will be to pay for our food on our September vacation. Finally the December bonus will be to pay for the food for our January trip since tickets will be covered already.

Not a bad deal.

Looking ahead into 2012 I see March, June, August, and November as bonus months. So between those months we should be able to do it all over again.

How Beyond the Attractions: A Guide to Walt Disney World with Preschoolers Comes Together – Part 2

How Beyond the Attractions: A Guide to Walt Disney World with Preschoolers Comes Together – Part 2

Much like accountants have their busy season, my busy season as a Walt Disney World travel guide author is late spring throughout the summer. With a target date of October 1st for the next year’s version to be available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble, my book must be complete and in the hands of the publisher by September 1st.

Last time I shared my process for research and writing new sections of the book. Once I’ve completed my fact-checking, it is time to read and re-read the entire book and revise areas as needed. When I have a complete draft, I send the book to my editor who works her magic and poses insightful questions. At the same time, I rely on the generosity of some very knowledgeable members of the Disney community who perform peer reviews on the book. This is critical as they look at the book from their own Disney perspective and share ideas on information that should be added or even removed. This is where I currently am in the making of Beyond the Attractions: A Guide to Walt Disney World with Preschoolers (2012).

It’s time to breathe for a couple of weeks while I wait for feedback. After I receive and integrate editorial changes, I start the detail work.

  • Adjust spacing between paragraphs and pages.
  • Confirm chapter headers are correct
  • Update and proof the table of contents
  • Update and check the index.
  • Review and update the maps
  • Acquire an ISBN
  • Select a photo and create the cover

I got lucky this year. Typically, Disney releases price updates in August which means another round of last-minute updates right before I send the draft to the publishers. Disney recently released ticket price increases which I’ve already been able to integrate into my draft.

Once September 1st rolls around, I send the book to the publisher. It is about three weeks until I receive a physical proof to review. In the meantime, I prepare the electronic document for publishing to eReaders like the Kindle and nook which require special preparation.

At long last, October 1st will arrive and if all has gone well, Beyond the Attractions: A Guide to Walt Disney World with Preschoolers (2012) will be available. Finally! 🙂

A Sweet Negotiation at Disney World

A Sweet Negotiation at Disney World

A funny thing happened during my family’s trip to Walt Disney World this past November. We kept running into the same family. Has this ever happened to you? We first met them while they were seated at the table next to us at Le Cellier. A couple days later, we saw them at the entrance to Hollywood Studios. Then, the next day we were honored with their presence again at Downtown Disney. It is funny when that happens, isn’t it?

Whenever we would notice them, someone in my family would call out, “Hey, there’s Jersey!” and they would respond, “Hey, the Sweet’N Low thieves.” It was just a joke among friends, but we had indeed been spotted by them “negotiating” sweet’n low in “the World.”

You see, you can find Splenda, Equal and Sweet’N Low in the world. You just can’t find them all at the same time in the same place, in most cases. Half of my family prefers Sweet’N Low and the other half of us prefer Splenda. So, at least some of us are happy some of the time – just kidding; we are always happy at Walt Disney World!

In all seriousness, though, we were guests of the Contemporary Resort which did not carry Sweet’N Low, so when we ate at Le Cellier, my son would “negotiate” some of it to the Contemporary to put in his coffee the next morning. This might sound silly, but to me it is not as silly as whatever the reason is that Disney just will not carry all three artificial sweeteners at all locations. Isn’t the money all coming from the same source and flowing into the same pile? It seems like certain places would not serve one while other locations serve another.

I would like to pass this message on to the Disney Food and Beverage Management Team: save my family’s reputation; stock the pink stuff! Thank you!

My Top 5 Favorite World Showcase Pavilions

My Top 5 Favorite World Showcase Pavilions

World Showcase is one of the most popular areas at Disney World and at the top of my list when I visit. Who doesn’t like traveling around the world in an afternoon, experiencing different cultures, cuisine, products, architecture, and dining experiences! Of the nine different World Showcase pavilions, which are packed full of things to see and do, everyone has their own favorite; but today, I am listing my own Top 5 favorite pavilions!

1. Norway-This pavilion is my favorite because there is so much great stuff here! Norway transports me to a Norwegian village and back in time to the days of the Vikings! Norway is home to Akershus Storybook Dining, it’s one of my favorite character meals and restaurants. Here adults can experience delicious Norwegian fare while their own little princesses meet a variety of Disney princesses! Norway also has an attraction, Maelstrom, a boat ride through Norway’s history and mythology. It’s actually pretty good too! In addition to this pavilions shops, there is also the Stave Church to explore; and if you get hungry, visit the Kringla Og Bakeri for some famous school bread and then enjoy it at the nearby seating area with grass growing on the roof!

2. United Kingdom-This pavilion is interesting to me because of the history and variety of architecture and detail found here, particularly in the different buildings. Also, who doesn’t enjoythe popular Rose and Crown Pub and Yorkshire Fish and Chips! I like to shop too and the United Kingdom is a great place to do just that. There is also a vast variety of merchandise available here ranging from the Beatles to perfume to British toys and even tea. Tucked near the back of this pavilion is a quiet sitting area which provides a nice escape from the crowds; and you can often find entertainers performing on the street! Also, if you’re a big Disney character fan, as I am, the United Kingdom is a great place to find a vast quantity of Disney characters such as Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins, Alice, the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, and sometimes more!

3. France-This beautiful pavilion is full charm and detail, and who wouldn’t enjoy seeing the Eiffel Tower in the background? The shopping here is great by the way. I always have to do some browsing while I’m here. I especially like the home decor, mini-Eiffel Towers, and perfume. There’s also two table service restaurants here: Les Chefs de France and Bistro de Paris. Les Chefs de France is one of my favorite WDW restaurants; and throughout the day, Remy from Pixar’s Ratatouille stops by! Be sure to France thoroughly on your visit as it goes back farther than many realize to reveal another shop and one of World Showcase’s best bakeries, La Boulangerie Patisserie. I also enjoy this pavilion due its location next to the International Gateway, where you can hop on a “Friendship” boat to visit the Epcot Resorts or continue on to Hollywood Studios.

4. Germany-This is a popular pavilion with many guests, including myself. The Germany pavilion takes you into the pages of a classic fairytale with it’s clocktowers, turrets, and German village design. Here you can grab a meal at the Biergarten Restaurant or Sommerfest and do some serious shopping! There is a variety of German merchandise, such as Christmas ornaments, steins, toys, cuckoo clocks, soccer gear, and crystal jewelry. If you have a sweet tooth, like me, you must drop in the new Karamell Kuche for traditional caramel candies or some unique, caramel treats! Also, take some time to enjoy the minature train village nearby, kids and adults both enjoy it.

5. Canada-I like Canada because it’s different than most World Showcase pavilions. Tucked behind its shops, which represent both Canada’s rugged, Northwestern culture and elegant, European architecture, is a little piece of the Canadian Rockies. Several paths and bridges take you over little streams and by a waterfall on your way to a tribute film about Canada starring Martin Short, and it’s totally cool that the theater is nestled inside of a replica mine! For fellow shoppers, like myself, be sure to spend some time exploring The Northwest Mercantile; and everyone should walk through the peaceful and picturesque gardens. Need another reason why this pavilion is my favorite? Le Cellier! This is seriously one of the best restaurants at WDW property. Plus, one of World Showcase’s most popular entertainment groups, Off Kilter, can be found here!

So those are my Top 5 choices for my favorite World Showcase pavilions. What did you think? What is your favorite World Showcase pavilion?

Benefits of being on P-R-O-P-E-R-T-Y

Benefits of being on P-R-O-P-E-R-T-Y

“It’s just a place to sleep” is the theory of hotel choice for many traveling families; including those traveling to Walt Disney World. On the heels of the increase in ticket price you may be tempted to start re-analyzing your Disney vacation and seeing where you can cut costs…the bulk of which lies in your accommodations. Before you grab your red pen and calculator, consider the benefits of staying on property, you might be surprised to find they often outweigh the cost!

Let’s take a look at what the benefits of being on “property” have to offer you!

Parks-Disney Resort hotels are right in the middle of the action. You are close the major theme parks which decreases your travel time so you can spend more time in the parks and less time getting there.

Rates-Disney runs promotions on their resort properties which can often be turned into packages. Current resort promotions include Magical Memories Plus Free Dining and Late Sumer Room Offers. Pixie Vacations also has exclusive rates for Food and Wine Festival and Late Summer Travel.

Options-Disney has something for everyone and its accommodations are no exception. Value, Moderate and Deluxe resorts offer a range of options from budget conscious to plush tastes. There are over 20 resorts to choose from, be transported to a Caribbean Island, a Hawaiian Paradise or a Mansion on the Bayou.

Package deliveryShop till you drop and never carry a thing! During your purchase ask about package delivery and all you’ll carry is a green receipt. Your package will arrive a day or two later and you will be notified via voicemail on your room phone that your package is available in your resort gift shop.

Extra Magical Hours: Resort guests can take advantage of lower crowds during Extra Magical Hours, which rotate daily and offer you either early admission into the parks or extended stay after the park closes. Extra Magical Hours are a great way to experience the parks without the crowds, and the Florida heat!

Resort Services: Your customized Magic Your Way Package is placed on your Key To the World Card at check-in. Your “room key” serves as your dining plan (if you selected one), your park admission, and your room key. You can also opt to add charging privileges to your card and eliminate the need to carry cash. Charging privileges can be customized, so if you don’t want your children going on a shopping spree you can choose to have your credit card linked to the adults cards only. Disney cast members are available 24/7 to make sure your having a magical experience. Visit the front desk for park hours, time guides and maps or stop over at the concierge desk to rearrange dining reservations. The phone in your room can connect you to any major department with the touch of a button, so Disney service is always at your disposal.

Transportation: Magical Express is a complimentary service for Disney Resort guests that includes round trip ground transportation from airport to resort. The Magical Express bus will pick you up at the airport and take you to your resort. You don’t even have to worry about your luggage, place the provided yellow luggage tags on your checked baggage and Disney will take care of the rest. No standing in line at baggage claim, waiting then loading and unloading. Just walk to your Magical Express bus and your luggage will magically arrive at your resort at a later time. The transportation doesn’t end when you arrive at your resort. Transportation options include buses, monorails and boats to take you to the theme parks, you can also utilize them to get to other resorts.

Yes-you need to stay on property. If you haven’t experienced the benefits of being on property now is the time! Take advantage of one of these great promotions or ask your Disney travel agent for more details about the resorts and what would work for you. We started off talking about money and where to cut costs, can you afford NOT to stay on property?

Disney Confidential – New Disney Movie has no name and The Avengers Script Stolen

Disney Confidential - New Disney Movie has no name and The Avengers Script Stolen

Hey there guys and gals Anonymouse here.

Today I have some really weird movie news. Many news outlets have been reporting that Disney’s next Pixar movie has a release date but no name. All we know is it’s an original project (not a sequel) and will be out November 27, 2013.

Will Chip finally be getting his very own movie? Doubtful as it would be just him behind a computer for 14 hours a day. Boring.

The second movie news comes to us from Marvel Studios. Samuel L Jackson was robbed over the weekend. It seems he printed out the script for the Avengers movie and some very intelligent hacker decided to hack the printer and help himself to the script.

Here are the details:

Actor-producer Samuel L Jackson is angry after his Avengers script was stolen and leaked online by a hacker.

The script was stolen when Jackson, 62 printed it. The matter is now being investigated by Marvel/Disney, reported Femalefirst.

“I didn’t know printers had memories. And apparently my assistant didn’t either, when they sent me the new version of the script, my assistant copied it from the email and printed it. And by the time we got to Albuquerque someone had stolen the script out of the printer and put it online for sale,” he said.

That kinda reminds me of the time I sent this picture of Chip in a Speedo to the printer in my office and left it there so all my coworkers could enjoy laugh at it.

Anywho that is all I have for today.

Don’t forget to see Cars 2 in a few days. I know me and my little ones are looking forward to it! How bout you?

Got any good rumors?  Please email me at [email protected] on my Facebook Page.

The Top 5 Disney World Table Service Restaurants – Name Them!

The Top 5 Disney World Table Service Restaurants - Name Them!

Now there’s a challenge! It’s really not fair to just list five restaurants because of the various types of table service restaurants available at Walt Disney World. It’s also a matter of personal preference and depends greatly on your dining style and the mood of the moment. Let’s look at the top five (at least based on my dining experience) in two groups – The more formal (mostly Disney Signature restaurants) and the more casual, just plain fun places to eat.I’ll try to be somewhat general and avoid specifics otherwise this article will end up ten pages long. Please remember these are my favorites and we have dined at all of them, your choices may be different.

MORE FORMAL (SIGNATURE) RESTAURANTS-

  • Victoria and Albert’s (Grand Floridian) – Unquestionably the finest restaurant at Walt Disney World and in all of central Florida. They just picked up their 11th Five Diamond award and they absolutely deserve it. There are a number of dining experiences from the main dining room to the Chef’s Table and the prices vary with the experience. Be prepared to drop a chunk of change if you dine here but if you enjoy truly fine cuisine it is worth it. There are some restrictions here, no children under 10 years of age, ladies must wear appropriate evening wear, and jackets (ties optional) are required for men.
  • Narcoosssee’s (Grand Floridian) – There are so many superb restaurants at the Grand Floridian that it’s almost unfair so I’ll make this my last on in this category. Fine Dining at it’s best and the location is unbeatable, it sits right on the water and many of the tables have an exquisite view of the Magic Kingdom so if your timing is good you may be able to watch the fireworks right from your table. Oh, and did I mention, the food is amazing.
  • Hollywood Brown Derby (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) – That’s right, it sits in the middle of a theme park. It’s modeled after the original in Hollywood and even though I have never seen the original I have been told that it is a reasonably close approximation. The food and service have always been outstanding. This is one restaurant where I will make a couple of food suggestions – the Cobb Salad is to die for and don’t dare miss the Grapefruit Cake (even if you are not a dessert eater) it’s amazing.
  • Artist Point (Wilderness Lodge) – When you first enter this beautiful restaurant, the decor may seem a bit spartan. Take the time to look around and explore and you will find that everything is perfectly matched to the theme of the Wilderness Lodge. There are things on the menu that may be new to you but be sure to ask your server if you have questions, the staff is very knowledgeable. You will find the food prepared exactly to your liking and always delicious, don’t be afraid to try something new.
  • California Grill (Contemporary) – This one is a huge favorite with a lot of people and it’s not just the food and service that draw the crowds, there is also an outside deck where you can get an amazing view of the Magic Kingdom fireworks if you are dining at the right time. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu and once again the staff is highly knowledgeable so when in doubt ask. The kitchen is an “open kitchen” so you can watch the chefs prepare meals from start to finish, you will like it.

MORE CASUAL FUN TYPE RESTAURANTS-

  • 50’s Prime Time Cafe (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) – Excellent home style cooking served by your family members in a very accurate rendition of a 50’s style kitchen. If you dine here, please play along with the staff as they make sure you are using your best manners (there are consequences for bad manners) you will then have excellent food and a truly fun time. We will be dining here twice in October; best shakes at Walt Disney World.
  • Whispering Canyon Cafe (Wilderness Lodge) – Lots of excellent food and a truly crazy staff. If you want loud and raucous fun while enjoying your mean, give it a try, you will not regret it if that’s what you enjoy. As I mentioned, they pile on the food but I think they do it to lull you into a stupor before they team up with the children in the room to liven things up. It’s a little loud, but if you play along it’s truly fun.
  • Raglan Road (Downtown Disney) – An amazing Irish Pub that takes a bit of a different look at Irish comfort food. There is entertainment in an Irish Pub style and the entertainers truly are good. The food is excellent and even though they sometimes seem to overload their servers we have never had a bad experience, slow service, or a cranky server. Dine there a bit later in the evening and enjot the entertainment.
  • Liberty Tree Tavern (Magic Kingdom) – We have never been to Walt Disney World without having our first lunch of the visit at the Liberty Tree, we never miss!!! The setting in a Colonial Inn is very well done, the menu is varied at lunch (all good by the way), and the staff remains in character to add to the experience. It’s a great way to get you in the mood at Walt Disney World. One word of caution, even with ADR’s this place is busy so you might want to consider dining at a less than prime time.
  • The Plaza Restaurant (Magic Kingdom) – It’s like eating in an old fashioned ice cream parlor. The sandwiches are huge and the salads are excellent. This is another place to get an outstanding shake. This is a staff that pays attention to detail. As an example, on a recent visit as I was paying the check the Chef came out from the kitchen to visit with us. He didn’t come out to see if there was an issue but our server had gone to the kitchen to inform him that he and I had the same first and last name – we had a very nice visit!! That’s detail!!

SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT –

  • Garden View Lounge (Grand Floridian) – Afternoon Tea is not for me! At least that’s what I thought before I tried it on our last visit. My wife talked me into it and we will be doing it again in October. There are several experience levels from just one of their wonderful teas to a full blown meal with wine and dessert. An incredibly attentive staff will cater to your every need and if you have questions about the origins or traditions of Afternoon Tea they will explain it all to you. It’s a different but very relaxing and rewarding experience.

As I mentioned, these are our favorites but yours may be different. Eat where you like and like what you eat, that’s what is important. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!
