‘Winnie the Pooh’ Pooh’s Note (preview clip)

'Winnie the Pooh' Pooh's Note (preview clip)

Walt Disney Animation Studios returns to the Hundred Acre Wood with “Winnie the Pooh.” Featuring the timeless charm, wit and whimsy of the original short films, this all-new movie reunites audiences with the philosophical “bear of very little brain” and friends Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga, Roo—and last, but certainly not least, Eeyore, who has lost his tail. “Ever have one of those days where you just can’t win, Eeyore?” asks Pooh. Owl sends the whole gang on a wild quest to save Christopher Robin from an imaginary culprit. It turns out to be a very busy day for a bear who simply set out to find some honey. Inspired by three stories from A.A. Milne’s books in Disney’s classic, hand-drawn art style, “Winnie the Pooh” hits theaters in the U.S. on July 15, 2011.

Did you know???

  • Veteran Disney animator/storyman/director Burny Mattinson (a key animator on the 1974 short film “Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too!”) serves as senior story artist, with a dynamic young directing duo—Stephen Anderson and Don Hall—at the helm.
  • Director Stephen Anderson helmed animated films “Meet the Robinsons” and “Journey Beneath the Sea,” among others; he worked as a story supervisor on “Brother Bear” and “The Emperor’s New Groove,” and as an additional story artist on 2008’s award-winning “Bolt.” Director Don Hall is a veteran story artist at Walt Disney Animation Studios with credits including “The Princess and the Frog,” “Meet the Robinsons,” “Brother Bear,” “Home on the Range,” “The Emperor’s New Groove” and “Tarzan.”
  • “Winnie the Pooh” welcomes a few new voices to the Hundred Acre Wood: Craig Ferguson (“The Late Show with Craig Ferguson”), Tom Kenny (“SpongeBob SquarePants”) and Bud Luckey (director of the Pixar short “Boundin’”).
  • Actress/musician/singer/songwriter Zooey Deschanel (acclaimed band “She & Him”) provides the vocals for a special rendition of the beloved “Winnie the Pooh” theme song.
  • London-born A.A. Milne (1882-1956), a noted writer and playwright, penned two books and several poems about the beloved Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin (named after Milne’s son). His books are actually collections of stories, three of which inspired the film.
  • A.A. Milne’s son’s teddy bear inspired the beloved character. The child named his bear after Winnie, a Canadian black bear from London Zoo. Pooh was the name of a swan they encountered together.
  • Filmmakers visited Ashdown Forest where Milne wrote the books and the real Christopher Robin spent his summer vacations.
  • Tony® Award-winning songwriter Bobby Lopez, and his wife Kristen, wrote the six spirited new songs for Pooh and his pals, including “The Tummy Song,” “A Very Important Thing To Do,” “Everything Is Honey,” “The Winner Song,” “The Backson Song” and “It’s Gonna Be Great.” Lopez is composer on several episodes of “The Wonder Pets,” which earned a Daytime Emmy® in 2006 for Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition.
  • Inspired by three stories from A.A. Milne’s books in Disney’s classic, hand-drawn art style, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Winnie the Pooh” reunites audiences with the honey-loving, philosophical bear and friends Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga, Roo and Eeyore in a wild quest to save Christopher Robin from an imaginary culprit.

Downtown Disney to add Splitsville, delays Pleasure Island makeover

Downtown Disney to add Splitsville, delays Pleasure Island makeover
Concept art for Splitsville at Downtown Disney. Disney.

On July 12, Disney Parks Blog announced two additions to Downtown Disney (DTD) at Walt Disney World. The dining, entertainment and retail district will be the future site of Splitsville, a venue that will feature billiards and bowling, and Apricot Lane Boutique, a specialty retail store.

Splitsville at Downtown Disney West Side

Splitsville is more than a bowling alley or billiards room. Billed as “an upscale entertainment center that combines bowling with billiards, dining, music and nightlife,” the venue is more akin to a nightclub with bowling and billiards than a traditional bowling alley.

Splitsville currently operates four locations: Fredericksburg, VA; Fairview, TX; and Miami and Tampa in Florida. The venues offers “grouped” lanes of bowling, has a bar and restaurant area, takes reservations, and can serve as event space for parties and celebrations. At the proposed DTD location, it will offer 50,000 square feet of space.

Because of its varied entertainment and dining options, Splitsville positions itself as a destination in itself. In this way, it is similar to the AMC Dine-In Theater that opened at DTD in May, a venue which combines a bar, dining and movie-going experience.

Splitsville will occupy the DTD West Side area that currently houses RIDEMAKERZ, the former Virgin Megastore building. RIDEMMAKERZ will relocate to DTD Marketplace and a smaller space, most likely within Team Mickey.

Construction of Splitsville begins this fall, with no opening date set at this time.

Splitsville and Pleasure Island

Will Splitsville offer another entertainment destination for families at Walt Disney World or will it be designed to appeal primarily to vacationing adults and a local audience?

While Disney did not identify a specific target audience for the venue, the announcement was combined with updates about Pleasure Island:

“Over on Pleasure Island, we’ve completed removing some of the buildings that aren’t part of our future plans. During the course of this site work, we identified opportunities to further refine our master plan and are pausing to evaluate them. What does this mean for you? While we’re moving quickly, it will admittedly cause a delay in construction. But we’re willing to bet that any delay will be worth the wait once we’re able to share details about the exciting work we’ve been doing.”

In the Disney Parks Blog update, no explicit mention was made of the announced Hyperion Wharf makeover for Pleasure Island, the former night-time district that offered clubs, music, dancing, drinks and an overall more adult-oriented experience. Hyperion Wharf, announced in November 2010, was to add more dining options and specialty boutiques as well as transform the area into a waterfront district.

Disney’s announcement yesterday did include mention of the addition of Apricot Lane Boutique, a specialty store featuring apparel that has a counterpart in the Downtown Disney at Disneyland Resort. Opening later this summer, it will occupy the space formerly held by the Harley-Davidson Store that has relocated to DTD West Side.

But Hyperion Wharf’s absence in the DTD updates, and the inclusion of Splitsville in the DTD West Side warrants a closer look at what Splitsville offers in its other locations.

A Closer Look at Splitsville

Of course, Splitsville does offer bowling. And at some of its current locations, the price can be as little as $3 per game, a special offered during slow periods. Reservations can also be made for bowling, with dining and drinks available as part of the experience. (These elements are not included in the price per game.)

Splitsville’s restaurants serve mostly upscale versions of casual American cuisine for lunch and dinner. Roadhouse Nachos, French Fries with Chive Dip, a variety of burgers or pizzas occupy menu space alongside Spicy Edamame, Shanghai Shrimp, Seared Ahi Tuna, and Steak Oscar. Items run between $4 – $20. Specialty drinks are also part of the menu, including drink “bowls” that start at $21. (Menu and drink items and prices vary with location.)

Although there has been no word on the operational plans or look for the DTD version of Splitsville, it’s worth noting the venues encourage and sometimes enforce a dress code at night. The centers also enforce a 21-year and over policy for night-time entry (times vary with location) and stay open until into the early hours of the a.m., especially on weekends (hours vary).

Given that Walt Disney World is considered a family destination, the addition of Splitsville and how it develops will become a strong indicator of Disney’s vision for DTD and Pleasure Island.

It’s possible that the Orlando version of Splitsville will develop into a family-friendly place for all hours of its operation. On the other hand, if its other locations’ policies hold, Splitsville’s addition to DTD West Side might be a strong indication of Disney’s commitment to revitalizing the DTD/Pleasure Island area as a place for night-time entertainment for adults.

Walt Disney Records Releases Phineas and Ferb: Across The 1st and 2nd Dimensions Available August 2nd

Walt Disney Records Releases Phineas and Ferb: Across The 1st and 2nd Dimensions Available August 2nd

THE COLLECTION INCLUDES NEW MUSIC FROM DISNEY CHANNEL ORIGINAL MOVIE “PHINEAS AND FERB: ACROSS THE 2ND DIMENSION” PLUS SONGS FROM THE #1 EMMY AWARD-WINNING ANIMATED SERIES

SLASH CO-WRITES AND PERFORMS ON BRAND-NEW TRACK “KICK IT UP A NOTCH” VIDEO DEBUTS ON DISNEY CHANNEL JULY 22nd

Walt Disney Records is set to release the soundtrack to Phineas and Ferb: Across The 1st and 2nd Dimensions, on August 2, 2011. The album features 7 new songs (“Everything’s Better With Perry,” “Brand New Best Friend,” “Summer (Where Do We Begin?),” “Taking Care Of Things,” “Mysterious Force,” “Robot Riot”) and the end credit track “Kick It Up a Notch,” the Phineas and Ferb collaboration with legendary guitarist Slash. The soundtrack also includes 15 songs from the hit animated series. The Disney Channel Original Movie “Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension” premieres Friday, August 5 (8 p.m., ET/PT), on Disney Channel: Saturday, August 13, on Disney XD: and also on the ABC Television Network (date TBD).

The “Kick It Up a Notch” music video opens with a live-action segment of Slash plugging his Gibson Les Paul guitar into an amp.  An electric current travels through the wire and Slash becomes animated and is joined on stage by Phineas and Ferb. The video will debut July 22nd on Disney Channel.

In this animated adventure — based on Disney Channel’s Emmy Award-winning comedy series “Phineas and Ferb” — stepbrothers Phineas and Ferb go on their biggest journey yet, into another dimension! When the boys finally discover that their beloved pet platypus Perry is in fact a secret agent who battles the forces of evil daily, they join him on a grand adventure that blasts them to another dimension where a truly evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz has taken over an alternate Tri-state Area. When they uncover his ploy to travel back to their dimension to take over their Tri-state Area, the gang, as well as their alter-egos, must band together to stop him. “Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension” was executive-produced by Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh (“The Simpsons,” “Family Guy”).

Povenmire and Marsh said, “We’re thrilled about the music in ‘Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension.’ Music plays a big role in the movie just like the series. We always try to pepper in songs whenever we can to hook the audience in and a song gets you emotionally a lot quicker sometimes than dialogue would.  It’s part of what makes things memorable about the show.”

On the collaboration with Slash, Povenmire added, “Slash is a rock icon, he’s our hero.  We wanted a song that encapsulated the feeling of the series as well as the movie. Slash saw the movie with his kids and he liked it so much, he said, ‘Hey, let’s write a song together!’ It was really a dream come true.”

The relationship between Slash and the show creators was brokered by entertainment marketing consultant Al Hassas, who has played an instrumental role in building marketing alliances for Slash during the last few years.

Slash said, “I’m a big fan of ‘Phineas and Ferb.’ I watch a lot of cartoons and I think it’s one of the best shows.  It’s well-written, very original and the characters are great. This whole experience has been surreal because I’m a big Disney fan. To be involved in this movie and having written some music for it is pretty exciting. It’s an honor to actually be animated in the ‘Kick It Up a Notch’ music video.”

On his collaboration with the show creators and composer, Slash added, “Working with Dan, Swampy and Danny Jacobs was just great. Very talented couple of guys. It was really easygoing.  I had a guitar riff and they came up with lyrics and melodies instantaneously. Kids will dig it ’cause it has a lot of energy and the song has a great hook.”

The track listing for Phineas and Ferb: Across the 1st and 2nd Dimensions follows:

1.      “Everything’s Better With Perry”

Around the “Disney” World – Main Street, U.S.A.

Dapper Dans, Magic Kingdom

For many, Main Street, U.S.A. is simply the entrance into the Magic Kingdom and a walk way towards Cinderella Castle and the rides and attractions on the other side.  Main Street, U.S.A. is much more than that, though – it’s a walkway through time.

Unlike Main Street U.S.A. in Disneyland, the Magic Kingdom represents more than Walt’s home town of Marceline, Missouri – it represents Saratoga Springs, NY, to New Orleans, to New England all in one seamless street.  From the beginning of Main Street, coming from the Main Street Train Station and heading towards the castle, you literally walk through time – celebrating the 4th of July (notice the flags?) over a couple of decades.   As Walt had wanted, Main Street represents 1890-1910, when the street lamps turned from gas to electric bulbs, the horse-drawn street cars were used less as the “horse-less” carriage” became more popular.  Main Street represents the changing and optimism of early 20th century America.

Walking down Main Street, you feel as though you are surrounded by huge buildings, while in reality, what Imagineers call “forced perspective”  is used to represent the tall buildings that, upon further inspection, are clearly not 3 stories tall.  The windows above the multitude of stores and restaurants honor and represent those who made Walt Disney World happen.  There are windows for Walter E. Disney  “Chief Engineer” at the Main Street Train Station, and also for the Walter E. Disney Graduate School of Design and Master Planning.

Walt’s older brother, Roy O. Disney is represented on a park bench in Town Square, sitting next to Minnie Mouse, because without Roy, WDW may have never happened after Walt’s death.

Aside from the historical references and tributes, Main Street U.S.A. is filled with shopping of all kinds – jewelry, apparel, food, treats, anything you could imagine can be found in those stores.  The Main Street Bakery is filled with delicious treats, such as the famous Mickey Mouse rice cereal treats and cinnamon buns.  Near the end, closer to Cinderella Castle are Casey’s Corner,  The Crystal Palace Restaurant, and The Plaza restaurant – literally food for anyone and everyone.

Main Street U.S.A. is also home to some of the best Streetmosphere in all of Walt Disney World.  You can find the Dapper Dans, a barbershop quartet, serenading the crowd, or find the Mayor and his friends mingling with the towns people.  On our last trip, we met the Mayor, some lovely town ladies, and watched a saxophone ensemble perform, as they all broke out into song in the middle of the street.   If you’re at Casey’s Corner for a hot dog, you may be lucky enough to see Casey’s Corner Piano Man sit down for some extra entertainment.

Next time you’re in a hurry to ride Space Mountain before the crowds gather, slow down and look up.  Maybe you’ll see a window that will inspire you to continue your research.  And we’ll try to help you discover more, here at Chip and Company!

Disney World Trip Given As Prize to Extreme Makeover Winner

On the heels of the reality TV frenzy, shows like “The Biggest Loser” focus on weight loss and healthy living. ABC brings it’s own brand of weight loss motivation with the debut of “Extreme Makeover: Weight-Loss Edition”. The show takes you through a year long journey and transformation of one participant. Wally, a 26-year old husband and father is inspired to loose 110 pounds (he is currently 490 pounds) over the course of a year. If he succeeds, he’ll win a family trip to Walt Disney World to celebrate his daughter’s second birthday.
Will his extreme training (100 mile bike ride anyone?!) pay off? Will a thinner, healthier Wally be able to announce to his family, “We’re going to Disney World!”?

Wednesday with Walt: A Disney Love Story

Wednesday with Walt: A Disney Love Story

On July 13, 1966 Walt and Lillian Disney celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary. Walt had rented a 140-ft yacht and, together with their two daughters and sons in law (Diane, Ron, Sharon, and Bob) and 7 grandchildren, Walt and Lilly cruised the islands near Vancouver, Canada on what would be their final anniversary together.

The thirteen of them lived on the boat for two weeks enjoying a memorable trip through the waters of British Columbia. According to the Walt Disney Family Museum site Diane said, “The kids playing all around him didn’t bother him. They were climbing all over him, and he seemed to really like that. It was a beautiful, wonderful trip. We loved it.”

As some of you know, I really treasure old magazines I own that have printed articles about Walt. In an excerpt from an article in the February 1953 issue of McCalls entitled, “I Live With a Genius,” Lillian Disney said:

“…I wouldn’t have missed one minute of the twenty-seven years I have been married to Walt Disney. I’m proud of my husband and what he has done – but I’m even prouder that along the way, in bad times and good, he has never lost his sense of humor or his zest for life.

Being married to Walt Disney is never dull. There have been plenty of times when I felt as though I were attached to one of those flying saucers they talk about. Being female, I maintain that Walt’s imagination flies so high he naturally sees a little farther than the rest of us. But, although Walt has been right a number of times when we have been wrong, we don’t encourage him by admitting how smart he is to his face. We work on the premise that Walt may be a genius but any genius, especially Walt Disney, is wild-eyed and needs a practical family to watch over him.” She later said, “I am flattered to say that, after twenty-seven years of marriage, he seems to want me around as much as when we were first married. He is actually hurt if I don’t go along with him on a business trip. And he spends as much time and thought on a present as though he were still courting me.”

I love the way Lillian spoke about her life with Walt in this interview. She spoke about him not only as a husband but as a person. While reading the words on the page and the way she described him: his loving heart, his creative mind, his unwillingness to compromise on his ideas, I could hear the respect in her voice. I could comprehend how she was his advocate. I could feel the love from Lillian’s heart as she spoke about her husband.

I wanted to remember Walt and Lillian’s love affair today as it was appropriate that today happened to be my Wednesday with Walt. I think they were made for one another, and that is a wonderful gift. I have to wonder if sometime during their anniversary cruise Walt or Lillian looked at the other and said, “I have really loved cruising through life with you!”

Writing today’s blog got me to thinking about other “Disney couples.” There is a Disney play on an old saying that “the family that plays together stays together.” Do you find this to be true? I just have to wonder about the longevity of Disney couples vs. other couples. I know I couldn’t imagine being married to someone who doesn’t love Disney. Thank goodness I don’t have to. What is your Disney love story and how did you know that he or she was THE one?
