Is Disney’s Beach Club Resort Right For You?

Is Disney's Beach Club Resort Right For You?

Yes.

Oh. That’s not enough to answer this question? It is for me! From the second my husband, son, and I walked into the luxurious lobby we knew we made a great choice in our stay. We are Disney Vacation Club members and it was after our stay here that we immediately decided to add on to our membership and purchase a whole lot of points at Beach Club – we’d be back for sure! The ambiance of the resort is relaxing. The pool and activities are exciting. There’s so much to do at the Beach Club yet you could do absolutely nothing but stare out at the beautiful Crescent Lake and still have a fabulous time!

A list of the pros and cons will surely help you decide if this resort is right for you:

Pros:

  • Stormalong Bay – The pool in of itself is it’s own attraction! Shared with Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, Stormalong Bay is the most extensive pool at the Walt Disney World Resort. It’s great for any age – babies to adults! The Stormalong Bay Pool has a sand bottom, waterslide, lazy river (current channel), and whirl pool. Great for the kiddies is the zero entry at one end of the pool which makes playing even more fun for them. They can sit in the shallow water and build sand castles while you sip a fruity cocktail from Hurricane Hanna’s Grill and Poolside Bar. I may or may not have an intimate relationship with their frozen mango margaritas. The water slide at Stormalong Bay is located in the Albatross Pirate Ship and in my opinion the best on Disney property.

Is Disney's Beach Club Resort Right For You?

  • The vicinity of the Beach Club to Epcot is unbeatable! You can leave your room or villa at the Beach Club and be at the International Gateway entrance to Epcot in no more than 10-15 minutes…and that’s if you’re walking as slow as possible! After a hot day at the parks and a quick swim at Stormalong Bay, there’s nothing better than being able to pop into Epcot to make your ADR and not have to worry about timing the buses.
  • Food choices. I’m proud of myself for waiting until bullet point number three before talking about food. There are a few great dining choices at the resort. Beach Club’s counter service is typical of a Deluxe resort in that it’s small and doesn’t have an abundance of choice but what they do have is tasty and good quality. Their egg and cheese on a croissant sandwich is a personal favorite of mine. Besides that is the beautifully themed and always stellar dining choice of the Cape May Cafe. Mornings feature a character breakfast and evenings boast an outstanding clam bake that I always seem to need to be rolled out of in a wheelbarrow! Beaches N Cream is always a hit – be sure to ask for the Kitchen Sink!
  • Entertainment! A quick walk across Crescent Lake and you’re smack in the middle of Disney’s Boardwalk which has restaurants and entertainment for the whole family! It’s bustling there and there’s plenty to do. And the beauty of your stay at Beach Club is that you can enjoy the entertainment and dining options but be home in your quiet room or villa in a few minutes!

Cons – Gosh, do I have to have some cons?

  • Transportation. Bus & boat transportation is often shared with the Yacht Club resort, Boardwalk Resort, Swan & Dolphin hotels. Because of this, it may take a bit longer to get to your destination than if you had a bus that went directly from the Beach Club to a park. That being said, you can WALK to Epcot AND Disney’s Hollywood Studios in no time so in my opinion, the ease of getting to those parks far outweighs the annoyance the added time for a bus to the Magic Kingdom might cause.
  • The price. This is a Deluxe resort and with that comes a deluxe price tag. If you are planning on spending all of your time at the parks and little to no time at the resort, then this resort may not be right for you.
  • For those of you with early-to-bed kids, the noise from the Illuminations fireworks at Epcot may keep your kid up. I thought for sure my guy would wake up when we started to hear the fireworks. Surprisingly, he never did during our week-long stay there. All the excitement from the parks and swimming at Stormalong Bay knocked him out.

Disney’s Beach Club Resort is by far my favorite resort. It’s size makes it completely manageable and not overwhelming like some of the other resorts. The pool and activities available make this resort one that you could relax at the whole day and not feel like you’ve missed a thing on your vacation. The staff is always friendly and accommodating and the laid back beach vacation feeling you get when you stay there is a perfect compliment to the hustle and bustle of the theme parks. I guarantee a great stay at the Beach Club!

Tangled Ever After premieres in Front of Disney’s Classic Beauty and the Beast in 3D

Tangled Ever After premieres in Front of Disney's Classic Beauty and the Beast in 3D

The Walt Disney Studios proudly announced today that directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, the talented team behind Disney Animation Studio‘s global blockbuster Tangled, will premiere a delightful new animated short film spotlighting the royal wedding of Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) and Flynn Rider — a.k.a Eugene — (Zachary Levi) in front of each screening of Beauty and the Beast in 3D, which opens on January 13, 2012.

By popular demand, Greno and Howard are bringing back some of Disney’s most beloved characters when Tangled Ever After picks up where Tangled left off. The Kingdom is in a festive mood as everyone gathers for the royal wedding of Rapunzel and Flynn. However, when Pascal and Maximus, as flower chameleon and ring bearer, respectively, lose the gold bands, a frenzied search and recovery mission gets underway. As the desperate duo tries to find the rings before anyone discovers that they’re missing, they leave behind a trail of comical chaos that includes flying lanterns, a flock of doves, a wine barrel barricade and a very sticky finale. Will Maximus and Pascal save the day and make it to the church in time? And will they ever get Flynn’s nose right?

Tangled Ever After is the perfect accompaniment to Beauty and the Beast, which is returning to the big screen in Disney Digital 3D(TM) and introducing a whole new generation to the Disney classic with stunning new 3D imagery. Beauty and the Beast was nominated for six Academy Awards(R), winning Oscars(R) for Best Song, by the renowned Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and Best Original Score (Menken).

Is Disney’s Bay Lake Tower at Contemporary Resort for you?

Is Disney's Bay Lake Tower at Contemporary Resort for you?

This past June, our extended family took a fabulous vacation to Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, the new Disney Vacation Club resort that opened in 2009.  Our family had purchased points in DVC in June, 2010, and this was the first time we had stayed at at DVC resort.  Let me tell you, we were not disappointed by Bay Lake Tower!  Let’s take a look at the Pros and Cons of staying at Disney’s Bay Lake Tower at Contemporary Resort!

Pros:

  • BLT is a brand new 16 story modern resort. On the top floor they have the Top of the World Lounge, a special dining and rooftop viewing location for the fireworks at the Magic Kingdom.  We were fortunate enough to stay in room 8141, which was on the south side of the building, with a lake view, overlooking the pool area.  This photo at the beginning is one of the shots of the pool that I took off of our balcony.
  • Being a DVC Resort, it falls under the class of room categorized as Deluxe Villas.  Our 2 bedroom suite was huge, had 3 full bathrooms, two balconies, a full kitchen, and a washer and dryer.  We were able to sleep nine with no problems!
  • The pool is a zero entry pool, and was a lot of fun.  The slide on the right side of the pool is great, and was something that we did time and time again!
  • BLT has a special walkway over to the Contemporary Resort.  Called the Skyway, it is a great way to get over to the Contemporary to get some food, catch the monorail, buy some gifts, and just hang out.
  • Lastly, the Top of the World Lounge is, as I mentioned previously, a great place to watch the fireworks at the Magic Kingdom.  They even pipe over the music of the show for you to enjoy.  This special venue is only available to people that are staying at Bay Lake Tower.

Cons:

  • Because it is a DVC resort, within walking distance of the Magic Kingdom, staying at Bay Lake Tower can be quite expensive if you don’t have points to use.  If I wanted to get a 2 bedroom suite at BLT for our next vacation in June for one week, the quoted price on the DisneyWorld.com website is $7,403 for a Lake View (add $800+ dollars for a Theme Park view!)
  • One thing to keep in mind is that Bay Lake Tower, other than the lounge at the top of the resort, doesn’t have any amenities directly in the building for food.  All of the restaurants are the ones located at the Contemporary Resort.  This isn’t a big deal to me, but it might be to some people.
  • Because it is located next to the Contemporary Resort, BLT does not have any intricate theming associated with it.  It is intentionally modern, and while it’s not a deal breaker for me by any stretch, it is still something that I missed when we stayed in June.

We had a great time staying at Bay Lake Tower, and will consider staying there again.  How many of the Chip & Company readers have stayed at BLT?  What did you think of it?

Joyful Celebrations and Timeless Traditions Delight Guests at Walt Disney World Resort

It’s the month before Christmas and throughout Mickey’s house, the trees are all glowing, bringing smiles to The Mouse. Choirs are singing, bakers taking great care, sounds and smells of the season are filling the air…

At Walt Disney World Resort in 2011, it begins to look a lot like Christmas as early as Nov. 8. Santa’s elves bedazzle every corner of the Vacation Kingdom for a seasonal spectacle filled with heartwarming stage productions, enchanting parades, garlands and wreaths, millions of sparkling lights and even the first flakes of winter.

And with a ho, ho, whole lot of cheer being spread over more than a month, guests have more choice as to when they join in the magical, one-of-a-kind celebration.

Magic Kingdom

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party – On 19 special nights, holiday revelers can delight during this cheery, family-friendly event. Party-goers embrace the joys of the season – sipping cocoa, catching a “snowflake” and enjoying merry shows, fireworks, carolers and special character meet and greets.

This after-hours party on select nights between Nov. 8 and Dec. 18, 2011, features a sleigh full of merriment:

  • An enchanting Cinderella Castle adorned with Castle Dream Lights (through Jan.8)
  • Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade, complete with a special appearance by Santa Claus himself
  • An exclusive holiday fireworks extravaganza — Holiday Wishes: Celebrate the Spirit of the Season
  • Live entertainment featuring Disney characters
  • Meet and greet opportunities throughout Magic Kingdom theme park with favorite Disney characters
  • Complimentary cookies, apple slices and hot cocoa
  • A magical snow fall on Main Street, U.S.A.
  • Many popular Magic Kingdom attractions open for fun

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party will take place Nov. 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 18, 27, 29, 30, Dec. 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14, 16 and 18, 2011, from 7 p.m. until midnight. Day-of-event pricing is $62.95 and $57.95 for ages 3 to 9. Savings of $6 per ticket are available if tickets are purchased in advance. Visit Disneyworld.com/holidays.

Castle Dream Lights – Each evening of the season, Cinderella Castle shimmers with lights brought to beaming brightness during a ceremonial show performed at dusk. Beginning Nov. 8 and continuing through Jan. 3, 2012, Cinderella and favorite Disney characters decked out in festive holiday garb take center stage and magically transform Cinderella Castle into an ice palace draped with 200,000 ice cycle-white lights – a breathtaking focal point to a park ready for revelers with wreaths, bows, garland, towering Christmas trees and scarlet poinsettias dominating the landscape.

The Magic, The Memories and You! – The nightly light show on Cinderella Castle gets in “the spirit” throughout the holidays with a special segment that wraps the Magic Kingdom landmark in colorful bows and boughs, gift paper and ribbons, ornaments, candy stripes and multi-colored strands of lights … and gingerbread.

Epcot

Candelight Processional – An inspirational retelling of the Christmas story accompanied by a mass choir and 50-piece live orchestra punctuates the reason for the season during this time-honored Epcot tradition. Each evening Nov. 25-Dec. 30, 2011, a celebrity narrator (from a lineup that includes Steven Curtis Chapman, Marlee Matlin and Neil Patrick Harris) takes to the America Gardens Theatre stage and shares the story of Christ’s birth. Guests can sing along as the trumpeters and full orchestra offer a riveting performance featuring seasonal melodies. Shows are at 5, 6:45 and 8:15 p.m.

To ensure a seat for this memorable performance, Candlelight Dinner packages are available at select Epcot restaurants. They include a special fireworks viewing area and guaranteed seating for Candlelight Processional. For bookings call 407-WDW-DINE.

Holidays around the World Throughout World Showcase, international storytellers share traditions and tales from their homeland. Strolling along the promenade during the Holidays around the World celebration may put you face-to-face with the good-hearted witch La Befana, known in Italy for filling children’s shoes with treats, or the jolly gift-bearer Father Christmas in the United Kingdom. There are meet and greets with Santa and Mrs. Claus in the American Adventure, plus other legendary icons who share messages of goodwill. The celebrations of Kwanzaa and Hanukkah are celebrated as well.

The evening is capped by “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth,” the mesmerizing Epcot spectacular on World Showcase lagoon featuring fireworks, laser lights and water choreographed to a musical soundtrack – with a holiday finale.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights – Entering the Hollywood Studios backlot, guests discover a virtual city of lights. On, over and among the cityscape buildings are millions of dazzling bulbs, dancing lights and animated displays synchronized to high-energy holiday tunes at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Nov. 10-Jan. 7, 2012.

It’s truly a mega-watt spectacle for the eyes with colorful wreaths, twirling carousels, flying angels, Santa and his reindeer, swirling snow flurries, and amazing 3-D effects around every corner.

The tradition began in 1986 in Arkansas, at the home of businessman Jennings Osborne, who strung 1,000 lights as a Christmas gift to his daughter. After the exhibit grew larger and brighter each year, it was transported to Disney in 1995 where the light exhibit now mesmerizes guests from all over the world each year. The tradition continues after Jennings’ death on July 27, 2011.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade – King Louie and Baloo lead a rousing musical cavalcade – safari style – through the park from Nov. 10 to Jan. 3, 2012, during Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade. The wild side of Disney’s Animal Kingdom blends with a playful spirit of the holidays as Chip & Dale, stilt walkers and savannah friends dance alongside decorative floats at 4 p.m. daily. The savory scent of chocolate floats thru the air as Minnie’s candy cane and hot cocoa float roll by.

Santa Goofy’s Holiday Village at Camp Minnie-Mickey has decked the halls big time with festive décor. A perfectly trimmed Christmas tree adorned with animal crafted ornaments welcomes guests at the park’s entrance. Carolers spread holiday cheer and Santa Goofy and friends greet guests for photo opportunities.

Downtown Disney

With dozens of shops that stretch from the Marketplace to the West Side (and plenty of taste-bud-tempting treats!), Downtown Disney is a shopper’s delight. There are one-of-a-kind boutiques such as TrenD, a sports shop at Team Mickey, plus enough toys, games, character merchandise, and costumes to fill Santa’s sleigh at Once Upon a Toy and World of Disney. There’s also Fuego by Sosa Cigars, Ghirardelli Chocolates, Basin (soaps and bath products), LEGO Imagination Center and much more – including Disney’s Days of Christmas where guests can choose Disney ornaments and decorations any season of the year.

School choirs and bands often perform at the dock stage to ring in the season. Kids can pose for pictures and sit with Santa Claus, Nov. 19 – Dec. 24, 2011.

Resort Hotels

Disney resort hotels are dressed up for the holidays, offering an ideal home-away-from-home during the season. An intricate, life-size gingerbread house cooked up by Walt Disney World pastry chefs is a must-see at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. The yummy sugar shack is baked with 1,050 pounds of honey, 600 pounds of powdered sugar, 35 pounds of spices and more. It even has a chimney that puffs out delicious cinnamon smoke.

A magnificent gingerbread carousel complete with chocolate and soft-candy ponies and oversized candy-cane poles takes center stage at Disney’s Beach Club Resort. Other hotels are spruced up with wreaths and trees decorated with miles of garland, ribbon and glistening ornaments. Check each hotel for holiday dining offerings and special entertainment.

Five Ways To Ruin A Walt Disney World Vacation

Five Ways To Ruin A Walt Disney World Vacation

Walt Disney World is a magical place to vacation and if you do most things correctly it is difficult to not have a wonderful time. Some people are planners and some are not but some planning is essential. Every traveling group has a definite dynamic and there are travelers within each group with different abilities and needs. The magic of Walt Disney World can overcome most things but there are a few things that MANY, MANY visitors do that can defeat even that magic. Let’s look at five things that can derail an otherwise incredible visit.

  • OVERPLANNING: An awful lot of people get carried away with the planning portion of a visit. They try to plan every minute of every day and more often than not they suffer some disappointment because of the dreaded “Disney variables”. Although there are a lot of sites around that do a good job of predicting crowd levels, none of them are always accurate. You must allow some spare time to account for unexpected crowds and other things like an attraction going down because of a malfunction – it happens!! If you find yourself asking how long it takes to walk from attraction A to attraction B so you won’t miss anything, you are overplanning
  • THE DOMINANT PERSONALITY: As I mentioned in the introduction, every traveling group has a dynamic which includes a dominant person in the group. If you don’t  recognize who that person is in your party, it’s probably you. I speak from experience here because I am generally the dominant personality. I have learned over time that I have to step back and let the other members of the group take the lead. When I find myself taking over the group I have to say to myself – Ken, it’s not all about you!! Let your family and friends make some touring decisions.
  • GOING COMMANDO (NO RESTING): It always amazes me the number of visitors who feel that they have to be on the go and hitting attractions every minute of every day. They are easy to spot because they are the ones in full meltdown about half way through their day. I’m not just talking about the kids either, grownups have meltdowns too. Kids cry and grownups yell or grimace at each other. Do yourself a favor, relax your pace and make every attempt to get out of the park for an hour or two each day. Take a nap or a dip in your resort pool and if you are not staying on site go visit one of the beautiful Disney resorts to just sit down for a snack or a cold beverage – you will not regret it.
  • NOT LISTENING TO YOUR BODY: Your body knows when it needs something!!! When it’s tired it needs rest of one type or another, when it’s hungry it needs nourishment. and when it’s thirsty it needs fluids. One of the worst things you can do to yourself at Walt Disney World is to not stay hydrated. You get caught up in the excitement (happened to me in October) and you don’t drink as much WATER as you should. Dehydration is the quickest ticket to feeling just plain miserable and is the easiest thing to prevent – water, water, and more water!! Don’t worry, there are plenty of restrooms at Walt Disney World and they are generally spotless!!!!
  • WINGING IT (ZERO PLANNING): I did this once and believe it or not, this is worse than overplanning. Walt Disney World is huge and very complicated so if you don’t do any planning I can almost guarantee you will spend a significant portion of your vacation standing in line for attractions. Equally as important, one of the easiest ways to rest is at a table service restaurant but if you don’t pre plan at least some meals and make the appropriate reservations you are very likely to be disappointed. The internet is a gold mine for research and any planning you do (just don’t overdo it) will be rewarded.

It’s very tough to ruin a vacation to Walt Disney World but if you do some of the things I mentioned above you are on your way. I learned most of the things I talked about through many, many visits over the years and I hope reading about them will help you maximize your visit. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!
