Top 5 Time Wasters at Disney World

While surfing the Net we all come across many articles about how great Walt Disney World is. Top Five lists abound recommending everything from the best attractions to the tastiest foods and more. And I’ve even written some of these lists.

But today I thought it would be only fair to look at the other side of the Disney Dollar, so to speak. Is everything at Walt Disney World worth the time?

Top 5 Time Wasters at Disney World

Here is my Top Five list of what I consider to be time wasters out of any Disney vacation. I’ve chosen only one from each of the four Parks and one from Downtown Disney:

Magic Kingdom: Tom Sawyer Island

I’m sure back in 1955 when Disneyland first opened this was a fantastic place for kids! Davy Crocket was popular as were Westerns in general. And the works of Mark Twain were still regarded with respect in schools, unlike today. So the chance to crawl over a turn-of-the-century island with a cave and a military Fort must have been almost irresistible.

Even in 1971 when WDW opened, the pull of Tom Sawyer was still strong. But we have to admit that Disney was offering a lot more entertainment on the shores of the Island back then. Characters like Huck and Becky roamed the paths as well as a few soldiers and Indians.

But now it’s just a big empty Island really. You simply walk around and then leave. For me and mine it simply isn’t worth the raft ride until Disney adds some more magic perhaps as they did briefly at Disneyland with the Pirate makeover.

EPCOT: Wonders of Life

Not so much a waste of time anymore as a waste of space. I never got to see the attractions in this Pavilion, which I regret. Cranium Command and Body Wars only exist on YouTube these days, which is a shame. But things change and that’s not a bad thing. If the changes bring better things.

But in the case of Wonders it was simply shut down. Now it’s just a big empty building taking up prime real estate that we’re all paying to see! Oh, Disney does open it for conferences and lectures during The Flower and Garden and the Wine and Food Festivals, but it offers a bland experience at best.

Without a corporate sponsor to pump money into this building, don’t expect anything new in the back corner of Innoventions East anytime soon.

Hollywood Studios: Backlot Tour

In a nutshell: Just stop already! This ‘attraction’ was never really a great thing to begin with, and so as Disney has raided it’s
footprint for other attractions over the years it’s become even less inviting. When I last bothered to give it a chance, the special effects demonstration at the beginning was broken, so perhaps the best part of the ‘attraction’ was missing. Then we just rode past rooms with stuff in them before going out into the sun to drive past other Park Guests who were walking in the same area.

Hardly an exclusive backstage pass! With rumors that this ‘attraction’ will soon be closed entirely swirling around the Internet, I say: It couldn’t happen too soon.

Animal Kingdom: Rafiki’s Planet Watch

Do your kids dream of going to school while at WDW? I didn’t think so, but that’s how it may feel for some when they visit the Watch. It’s filled with educational opportunities, but they usually require a lot of milling around and reading. You may see an animal being cared for. But not likely. You may see a candid moment in an animal’s life on an Animal Cam. But not likely. Getting the idea?

It tries hard to be both educational and entertaining, but simply doesn’t have enough to work with.

Having said that, I do enjoy the train ride over to the Watch on the Harambe Line. And sometimes you can meet the Talking Trashcan! But after that, plan to be bored.

Downtown Disney: Pleasure Island / Hyperion Wharf

Pleasure Island is no more and Hyperion Wharf is in a complete stall. There simply isn’t anything there now.

When Pleasure Island was up and running, I never saw it as a viable family experience anyway. Mainly designed around the nightclub culture, it was more for partying adults than your typical Disney Guest. And the stores in that section of DTD were not usually Disney themed.

But that was all to change with the coming of Hyperion Wharf! A new family environment with this and that and blah blah blah. So where is it? When will it be finished? No one knows.

So until Disney finishes whatever it’s trying to do over the bridge, this area wins as the biggest time waster, and space waster, of Downtown Disney.

In Conclusion: I’ll just say that for some areas, I found it hard to find a time waster, while for others I had to choose between two or three. Do you agree with my list, or do you have a bigger time waster for one or more of the Parks?

Be a sport and let them be known! Perhaps we can save some unsuspecting Walt Disney World Guest from boredom!

Ridemakerz to move in with Team Mickey

Ridemakerz Downtown Disney West Side
Ridemakerz at DTD West Side

With the announcement of Splitsville, an upscale bowling and billiards venue, taking over the 50,000 square feet originally occupied by the Virgin Megastore, the fate of the venues current tenant, Ridemakerz has been in question.  In the official Splitsville announcement, Disney indicated that Ridemakerz would be housed in the Marketplace area, but no specifics were mentioned.

Ridemakerz will be sharing space in the Team Mickey store.  Disney evidently feels that the RC car customization shop will be a good match with the sports and ESPN themed merchandise sold in the Team Mickey space.

Ridemakerz to move in with Team MickeyRidemakerz allows guests to choose the pieces to create one of a kind customized RC cars.  Recent contracts with the Disney company have included Cars 2 chassis for the RC cars being added to the existing NASCAR and sports car themed elements featured in the store.  Guests at Ridemakers choose the pieces that will make up the car, then assemble the care at a series of workbenches with guidance from employees as needed.  The West Side location also featured luxury sports cars and NASCAR racing cars from Ridemakerz owners and affiliates.

According to cast members, Ridemakerz will only occupy part of the space in the current Team Mickey store, severely reducing the display area from its current dimensions.  It will be interesting to see if the new location proves effective for the RC car customization company.

Small Fire Breaks out at Cinderella’s Castle in Walt Disney World

Small Fire Breaks out at Cinderella's Castle in Walt Disney World

Today I was making my rounds in the Forums at WDW Magic and found this interesting article/video from Tuesday, July 19th, 2011. The poster was able to whip out his camera and get some video of a small fire on one of the Spires of Cinderella Castle.

It looks like from the video nobody was hurt and was dealt with immediately. Just goes to show you that pyrotechnics are dangerous and HOT STUFF!

Personally I tend to stay back from anything flammable and electrical no matter where I am. I know the fire crews and safety staff at Walt Disney World are some of the best in the business so my hats off to them for keeping us safe at all times when we are enjoying our home away from home.

Walt Disney Studios Begins Production on “Oz The Great and Powerful”

Walt Disney Studios Begins Production on "Oz The Great and Powerful"

“OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL” BEGINS PRODUCTION IN MICHIGAN

James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams Topline Sam Raimi’s New Fantasy Adventure

Walt Disney Pictures’ fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, went in front of the cameras at the brand-new Raleigh Studios in Pontiac, Michigan, on Monday, July 25, 2011, boasting a stellar cast that includes Academy Award® nominee James Franco (“127 Hours”) as the young wizard, Golden Globe® nominee Mila Kunis (“Black Swan”) as the witch Theodora, Academy Award® winner Rachel Weisz (“The Constant Gardener”) as Kunis’ sister Evanora and two-time Oscar®-nominated actress Michelle Williams (“Brokeback Mountain,” “Blue Valentine”) as Glinda, the Good Witch.

The cast also includes Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominee Zach Braff (“Scrubs,” “Garden State”), who will play Franco’s circus assistant as well as lend his vocal talents to one of the CGI creatures in the story — Finley, the winged monkey who accompanies the magician on his journey to Oz; and 12-year-old actress Joey King (“Ramona and Beezus”), who will voice another CGI character in the story, China Girl, who also joins the future Wizard on his excursion through Oz.

“Oz The Great and Powerful” imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

Raimi has assembled his own band of technical wizards and movie magicians on the project, which includes cinematographer Peter Deming (“Mulholland Dr.,” “Drag Me to Hell”), two-time Academy Award®–winning production designer Robert Stromberg (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Avatar”), Oscar®-winning film editor Bob Murawski (“The Hurt Locker,” the “Spider-Man” trilogy), veteran Oscar®-nominated costume designer Gary Jones (“Spider-Man 2,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley”), visual effects Oscar® winner Scott Stokdyk (“Spider-Man 2,” “Spider-Man”) and Academy Award®–winning special makeup artist Howard Berger (“The Chronicles of Narnia” series), who will create the looks of several of the unique denizens of Oz, including creatures such as the Whimsies, the Tinkers and the Winkies, as well as the ghastly look of the Wicked Witch of the West. The film will be produced by industry veteran Joe Roth, along with executive producers Grant Curtis (the “Spider-Man” trilogy, “Drag Me to Hell”), Philip Steuer (“The Chronicles of Narnia” series) and Palak Patel. The screenplay was written by Mitchell Kapner, (“The Whole Nine Yards”) and David Lindsay-Abaire (“Rabbit Hole,” “Robots”).

Production on “Oz The Great and Powerful” will take place entirely on site at the new Raleigh Michigan Studios, the 200,000 square foot sound stage facility in Pontiac, Michigan, once the location of General Motors’ Centerpoint business campus and truck manufacturing plant.

“Oz The Great and Powerful” will be released through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on March 8, 2013.

Disney Junior’s “Jake And The Never Land Pirates” Hooks Celebrity Guest Stars For Season 2

Disney Junior's "Jake And The Never Land Pirates" Hooks Celebrity Guest Stars For Season 2

Disney Junior’s No. 1 series, “Jake and the Never Land Pirates,” has hooked Sharon Osbourne (“America’s Got Talent”) and Jane Kaczmarek (“Malcolm in the Middle”) to voice recurring guest roles opposite the infamous Captain Hook for the series’ second season, slated to premiere in early 2012. The duo joins a talented roster of familiar voices who portray both regular and recurring roles for the series, including David Arquette, Tori Spelling, Lisa Loeb, Adam West and Ariel Winter.

In the new season, Osbourne will voice the role of Captain Hook’s mother who comes to pay her son a visit and is none too happy with him when she finds out that he has been stealing treasure from Jake and his crew. Kaczmarek will voice Red Jessica, a swashbuckling pirate gal who nabs Captain Hook’s attention after searching for the Ruby Heart of Hearts, a legendary and rare gemstone.

“Jake and the Never Land Pirates” is cable’s No. 1 series among Boys 2-5 and is on track to be Disney Channel’s No. 1 preschool series ever and most co-viewed series among all Disney Junior and Nickelodeon series, with 47% of Moms watching with their preschooler. A music-filled interactive treasure hunt, the series introduces a crew of kid pirates – leader Jake and pals Izzy and Cubby – and follows their Never Land adventures as they work to outwit two infamous characters, the one and only Captain Hook and Smee, from Disney’s classic “Peter Pan.” The series features original “pirate rock” music performed by The Never Land Pirate Band whose animated alter egos, Sharky and Bones, pop up to sing pirate ditties throughout every episode.

“Jake and the Never Land Pirates” airs daily during Disney Channel’s Disney Junior programming block for kids age 2-7. The series stars Colin Ford as Jake; Madison Pettis as Izzy; Jonathan Morgan Heit as Cubby; David Arquette as Skully; Corey Burton as Captain Hook; Jeff Bennett as Mr. Smee and Bones and Loren Hoskins as Sharky. Dick Van Dyke and The Vantastix perform at D23 Expo

Dick Van Dyke and The Vantastix perform at D23 Expo

Disney fans attending the first day of Disney’s D23 Expo, presented by D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, August 19-21 at the Anaheim Convention Center, will be able to end their day with an unforgettable evening of harmony provided by Dick Van Dyke & The Vantastix. The popular vocal quartet is comprised of legendary television, Broadway, and film star Dick Van Dyke and three renowned west coast musicians—Mike Mendyke, Bryan Chadima and Eric Bradley. The group will appear in concert on Stage 23 at the D23 Expo on Friday, August 19, 2011, at 8:15 p.m.

Songs from Van Dyke’s varied entertainment career in addition to many well-known Disney hits and timeless pop standards will be performed by Van Dyke and The Vantastix in a show rich in humor, pure entertainment and sing-along favorites. Much of the show’s song roster is based on Put On A Happy Face, the group’s inaugural a cappella album, which features 14 well-known tunes. The CD will be available for purchase in the D23 Expo Treasure Trove store.

Dick Van Dyke & The Vantastix is the result of a chance meeting of Van Dyke and Mendyke at a Malibu coffee shop in September 2000. With the addition of Chadima and Bradley, the group started “just for fun,” gathering weekly for pizza and singing around Van Dyke’s piano, and soon built up an impressive repertoire of children’s songs and standards.

After their first casual performance during the wrap party for Van Dyke’s long-running mystery TV series Diagnosis Murder, the group began to get requests to appear at charity events and benefits. They have performed at the City of Hope Hospital; the Beverly Hilton for the Society of Singers Concert honoring Dame Julie Andrews; the Hollywood Bowl as part of an evening of TV theme songs; and at the awarding of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Rose Marie, who appeared with Van Dyke on The Dick Van Dyke Show.

There have also been television appearances at the TV Land Awards, Larry King Live, and a performance of the National Anthem for the NBA Playoffs and more. The group continues to perform at benefits in the greater Los Angeles area.

“Hard work and planning are important if one wants to get ahead in life,” Van Dyke says. “More important is leaving one’s self open to the twists and turns, the wonderful surprises that life has to offer. If you can’t bend with the wind, go with the flow, you’re gonna miss some great adventures. These three guys walked into my life from out of nowhere and turned my Golden Years into pure platinum. We always have a great time performing together, and we’re looking forward to appearing at the D23 Expo.”

  • Dick Van Dyke – Van Dyke began his remarkable career more than 50 years ago in a record-pantomime act called The Merry Mutes. He then went on to host several TV shows before starring on Broadway in Bye Bye Birdie, for which he received a Tony Award®. The classic sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show came next, then the screen version of Birdie, followed by the classic Disney film musical Mary Poppins, the equally adored movie musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the recent hit Night at the Museum, and a host of other wonderfully entertaining films. Winner of five Emmy Awards®, Van Dyke completed nine seasons of the TV series Diagnosis Murder.
  • Bryan Chadima – Bryan Chadima is a writer, musical director, arranger, and singer. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from Western Michigan University. He has toured nationally and recorded albums with numerous vocal groups and shows including Blind Man’s Bluff, Gold Company, Vox Lumiere, and The Three Waiters. His musical directing credits include Klub Kokomo and Baby It’s You. Chadima arranges most of the material performed by the Vantastix.
  • Eric Bradley – Bradley’s road to Los Angeles began in Connecticut where he grew up then at the University of Miami, where he studied music, film, and television, and then to Chicago, where he started his career as a vocalist and voice-over actor. Bradley now enjoys a career as a studio singer in LA. His film and TV credits include The Simpsons Movie, Spiderman 3, Blades of Glory, King Kong, Superman Returns, The Polar Express, Enchanted, I Am Legend, How I Met Your Mother, Family Guy, and the Oscars telecast. He also sings with jazz sensation Sixth Wave, the 2001 National Harmony Sweepstakes Champions.
  • Mike Mendyke – An MIT graduate and former NASA engineer with degrees in aerospace engineering and music, Mendyke believes every vocal group should include at least one rocket scientist. After eight years in the defense industry, he began recording albums and touring the U.S. and Japan with the vocal group Five O’Clock Shadow. A longtime advocate of vocal music, Mendyke is a past board member and former treasurer for The Contemporary A Cappella Society. Mendyke also runs an online marketing business, as well as music distribution services.
