Disney VoluntEARS Dress Up Holidays for Local Children

Disney VoluntEARS Dress Up Holidays for Local Children

For more than 20 years, Vernell Erkins has volunteered her time for a tradition that makes the holidays brighter for more than 1,000 local children. Erkins is one of hundreds of Cast Members at Walt Disney World Resort who outfit teddy bears in a variety of costumes, for youngsters to unwrap during the holidays.

“Growing up, my children loved teddy bears, so if we can dress up some bears and make other kids happy, well, that’s great,” Erkins said.

Disney VoluntEARS Dress Up Holidays for Local Children

This year, approximately 2,000 Salvation Army teddy bears were delivered to Cast Members in housekeeping, security, costuming, transportation and other roles. Cast Members challenge their creativity by costuming the bears as ballet dancers, basketball players, pirates and princesses, and even some Disney characters such as Tigger and Eeyore.

Desiree Gonzalez, who also works at Distribution Services, gets her family involved, too. Gonzalez’s 7-year-old daughter suggested concepts for the bears’ costumes, including a firefighter “because they are heroes” and a baseball player because it’s a sport she and her daughter watch together.

Greg Ruse, vice president of Construction, Horticulture, Textile Services and Distribution Services, is an Orlando advisory board member for the Salvation Army, which sponsors the program.

“The Dress-A-Bear program is one of many ways our Disney Cast Members get involved in the local community during the holidays,” Ruse said. “Some of the Cast Members really show off their creative talents, and it’s heartwarming to know that children in our own community are going to unwrap these bears on Christmas morning.”

The Salvation Army donation is one of many charitable activities as part of the ”Season of Sharing,” Walt Disney World Resort’s effort to make the holiday season a little merrier for those who need it most.

Fright Night Bluray Review – Does this Classic 80’s Remake make the cut?

Fright Night Bluray Review - Does this Classic 80's Remake make the cut?

Yesterday was the release of Fright Night on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, Digital and On-Demand. The past weekend my wife and I sat down to check out this classic movie remake starring Colin Farrell.

I was leery at first on if I wanted to see this film or not. I remember the classic 80’s flick from my youth. My sister would watch it and I would get roped into hiding under the covers more than watching what was on screen. As I got older I grew to love the cult film. So when I saw they were making a remake I wasn’t sure if I would like it. I had this mindset going into the review…

Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) and his mom Jane (Toni Collette) live a Vegas suburb miles from the strip. Charley has a hot girlfriend Amy(Imogen Poots) and now in the with “In” Crowd. You learn that he turned his back on childhood best friend Evil (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) or Mc Lovin from Superbad!! If you watch the bonus feature you will see a very strange side of Charley and Evil in Squid Man.

Charley feels guilty for dumping his nerdy best friend for the cool kids and like the original Evil gets turned into a Vampire by Jerry Dandrige (Colin Ferrell) Jerry is a contractor and the seductive steamy vampire next door.

Basically the same story line prevails through the film but with a modern remake. For example Peter Vincent (David Tennant) is a actor on the Vegas Strip and a real phoney.  I would have liked to see more of Peter Vincent since I am a Huge David Tennant/Dr Who fan. It was kinda strange seeing him play someone other than the Doctor.

Without giving out to many plot details for those who didn’t follow the cult film from the 80’s there are many scary, edge of your seat moments. One of the best scenes was when Jerry & Evil head to Peter Vincents Apartment and really delve into Peter’s gadget collection.

There are a few twists and turns in the story line but it still holds true to the original. I am not sure why this movie didn’t do better in the box office since it was a nicely done remake.

A few Blu-ray exclusives are included, the best of which are a selection of five deleted and extended scenes. While not adding much to the overall plot and A “How to Make a Funny Vampire Movie” featurette is just plain fluff.  Also  found on the Blu-ray and included standard DVD are a blooper reel, Charley and Evil’s “Squid Man” home movie, and a video for Kid Cudi’s “No One Believes Me.”

I give the remake a solid B. If you have watched it or own the bluray let us know in the comment box below.

Be sure to check out the bonus clips below.

Disney in Christmas: Oh, Key Chain Tree!

Disney in Christmas: Oh, Key Chain Tree!
Oh, Key Chain Tree, thy branches are so heavy...

Every photo has a story.

One of my all time favorite souvenirs from Walt Disney World has to be key chains.  They generally run from $5.95 to $8.95, which is a pretty good bargain considering my favorite Disney sweatshirt was $49.95.  Even Disney Christmas ornaments (which are spectacular!) will run you upwards of $20.  Key chains, like all things Disney, are good quality items that last a long time.

Picture this…most people have one or two cars at the most.  How many key chains does the average Disney fan really need?  A better question might be, just how many key chains can you actually put to use?

The Disneyfied answer is quite a few, actually, if you know where to hang them.

Last January, I left a plain three-foot Christmas tree in my dining room, just because the soft white lights added a touch of mood lighting, plus a little comedy to a pretty straight-laced room.  One day, I hung a few key chains on the tree, and no one complained.  I came home from work to find several old Disney Resort room keys tucked into the tree,  plus a few more straggling key chains appeared.  There’s even a few Disney Vacation Club Fast Pass cards between the branches now. I slipped a note to Santa asking him to refill those cards this year with spanking new Fast Passes, but I’m not holding my breath.

We’re up to 7 cards and 14 key chains, reflecting the twinkling lights and staring me in the vacation-anticipating face during every dining room meal, 365 days a year.  Our family, and visitors alike, find the Disney in my Key Chain Christmas tree all year ’round.

“It’s July. There’s a Christmas tree in your dining room.”

“You mean the Disney Key Chain Tree?”

“Yea, that.”

“Well, if you think that’s unusual, let me direct your attention to the Festivus Pole in the living room.”

Merry Christmas to all, and to all, a good night filled with sweet dreams of Disney.

Drew Carey’s Sounds Dangerous to be Removed in 2012

Drew Carey's Sounds Dangerous to be Removed in 2012

Rumor has it that “Sounds Dangerous“, the mini-theatre type building in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is set to be removed permanently in mid-2012.

The sound show, which featured the voice of Drew Carey, hasn’t operated for years in its “attraction” form. The building is used seasonally for overflow, traffic control and a central station for Jedi Training Academy sign up during Star Wars Weekends.

The long lost attraction will serve as a temporary home for the Comedy Warehouse December 25 to 31, 2011 and should be removed from all park maps and signage by May 2012.

What do you think should take its place? Tell us in the comment boxes below!

Rare Pigs Debut at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Rare Pigs Debut at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

The Animal Care team at Conservation Station has some new animals to brag about with the arrival of three kunekune pigs, a rare breed that has just made its debut at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Found in New Zealand but believed to have originated in China, kunekune pigs also are known as Maori pigs after the first people of New Zealand. “Kunekune” means “plump” in the Maori language. Kunekunes nearly became extinct in the 1980s before breeding efforts increased their numbers.

To help with the pigs’ care at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and to acclimate them to the up-close experience with Guests at Affection Section, animal keepers have been working with the kunekune pigs on a variety of behaviors. This training, which is similar to techniques used with pets, helps keeps the pigs fit, intellectually stimulated and comfortable around Guests.

“Most people have heard about endangered species in reference to wild animals, but many domestic animals are at risk of extinction as well,” said Jackie Ogden, Ph.D., vice president of Animals, Science and Environment for Disney Parks. “By showcasing rare domestic breeds, like babydoll sheep, Nigerian dwarf goats and kunekune pigs at Affection Section, we are helping our Guests learn more about them and how they can help.”

Fun facts about kunekune pigs:

  • Kunekunes are a small breed that usually weighs from 90-120 pounds when fully grown. They have a round body, a short up-turned snout and a curly tail. Some have a wattle (a fleshy growth hanging from the neck).
  • The pigs can be black, white, ginger (red), brown or gold tipped, and their coats can be spotted, striped, marbled, solid, curly, smooth, rough, long or short.
  • They are grazers and foragers. They eat shrubs, weeds, bird eggs, snakes and mice, and usually don’t root.

Disney Publishing Announces Launch of FamilyFun Kids

Disney Publishing Announces Launch of FamilyFun Kids

Disney Publishing Worldwide, the world’s largest publisher of children’s books and magazines, today announces the launch of FamilyFun Kids, a new, bi-monthly magazine that encourages kids’ creativity with hands-on crafts, skill-building recipes, imaginative games, brainteasers, and puzzles.  The magazine, geared to 6- to 12-year-olds, is created by the staff of Disney FamilyFun magazine, which millions of moms turn to each month for creative family ideas. Like its parent magazine, FamilyFun Kids is packed with fun things to read, but is also specifically designed to be a tactile, interactive experience for children with pages they can cut, fold, tear out, and decorate.

“Many studies show that creative thinking is critical for kids to develop as students and thinkers, yet unfortunately, U.S. creativity scores are declining, and arts programs are being cut,” says Editorial Director, Ann Hallock. “FamilyFun Kids is designed to spark creative thinking in children by giving them ideas and inspiration to make and do things on their own. There is no magazine out there doing this – and we know parents really crave this kind of creative support for their kids.”

The first issue of this hands-on magazine features a playful voice, step-by-step photos and diagrams, ideas from real kids, sneak peeks of great new books, special “art break” pages, where readers can use their imaginations, and even a fold-out-and-use fortune teller. Content will include brand-new activities in addition to favorite ideas from FamilyFun’s 20 years of archives, re-worked so kids can do them on their own. FamilyFun Kids magazine is the latest addition to a successful cluster of five premium children’s subscription magazines launched in the U.S. by Disney Publishing Worldwide.

FamilyFun Kids is available for $23.94 for a year subscription (6 issues), and on newsstands for $4.99 per issue. To learn more about FamilyFun Kids, visit FamilyFun.com/kids.
