Christmas Gift Ideas For Your DCO (Disney Crazed Oldie)

Christmas Gift Ideas For Your DCO (Disney Crazed Oldie)

Hi, my name is Ken and I’m a DCO (Disney Crazed Oldie). A lot of my life, even smack dab in the middle of my 60’s, revolves around everything Disney. When I was a kid (in my 40’s) a pair of Mickey Ears would have thrilled me but as we become Oldies, our tastes change. With that in mind, here is my top 5 list for Christmas gifts for us, the DCO’s in your life. You will forgive me if a lot of this stuff is colored by my personal taste. In no particular order the list is:

Christmas Gift Ideas For Your DCO (Disney Crazed Oldie)

Oldies like to stay warm so a very nice robe like this makes a great gift. This one is plush and of course is genuine Disney Parks. You can find it at: Disney Parks Robe

Christmas Gift Ideas For Your DCO (Disney Crazed Oldie)

My dear wife loves purses, so for the DCO in your life with the same fetish this Dooney and Bourke Champsac Bag would be a lovely addition to her collection. Even if she is not a total DCO it is subtle enough so as not to attract smart aleck comments from observers. You can find this item at:Dooney and Bourke Champsac Bag

Here is where my personal taste comes in. I have over 30 Disney Snowglobes and they make wonderful collectibles. I admire the clever subject presentation and the intricacy of the handiwork. They make a great gift!!! This one can be found at the following location along with many others: Disney Snowglobes.

What DCO would not love a Mickey Mouse Watch? That’s not really a question because we all love them!! This is a particularly nice one and not all that expensive. It can be found at: Mickey Mouse WatchChristmas Gift Ideas For Your DCO (Disney Crazed Oldie)

Giclee’s are another wonderful collectible with one MAJOR drawback – they are very expensive. Although I would love to have a nice collection of them I find that putting money towards Walt Disney World vacations is a better use for our cash. But – if you have extra money lying around with no one to spend it on you can reach me through Chipandco.com and I’ll provide you with the information you need to send it to me (just kidding of course). These particular types of items that I dream about are at:Hiya’ Pal Giclee

There you go! These are the types of items that appeal to your DCO’s (at least this DCO) and would all make great Christmas gifts. I hope you all enjoy the holidays with your families and as always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Ken

Dreamworks Pictures’ “WAR HORSE” London Premier to Benefit the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry

Dreamworks Pictures' "WAR HORSE" London Premier to Benefit the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry

DreamWorks Pictures announced today that the premiere of its latest film “War Horse,” directed by Steven Spielberg, on Sunday, January 8, 2012, at the Odeon Leicester Square, London, will benefit the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be in attendance.

The Duke and Duchess will greet members of the cast and Director Steven Spielberg before watching the film. Six hundred serving and ex-serving military personnel and their families have been invited to the Premiere, alongside beneficiaries of military charities, which the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry helps to support. The servicemen and women have been invited from The Duke of Cambridge’s regiments, including RAF Search and Rescue, Household Cavalry, Irish Guards, Royal Air Force Coningsby, Scotland Royal Naval Command and Submarines Royal Naval Command.

“War Horse,” which opens in theatres in the U.S. on December 25th, is the epic tale of loyalty, hope and tenacity set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War. Based on the best-selling book by Michael Morpurgo and the Tony Award®–winning stage play by Nick Stafford, “War Horse” is one of the great stories of bravery and friendship, brought to the screen by one of the greatest directors in film history.

The story begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets—British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter—before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land. The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse—an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks Pictures’ “War Horse” stars Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irvine, Benedict Cumberbatch and Toby Kebbell. It is produced by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, and executive producers are Frank Marshall and Revel Guest. The screenplay was written by Lee Hall and Richard Curtis and is based on the book by Michael Morpurgo and the international hit stage play by Nick Stafford, originally produced by the National Theatre of Great Britain and directed by Tom Morris and Marianne Elliot.

A ‘Towering’ New Race Through the Night at Walt Disney World Resort

A ‘Towering’ New Race Through the Night at Walt Disney World Resort

If you’re a runner, Christmas is coming a little early for you thanks to our runDisney team, which thinks it’s found the perfect gift for you. Open it up by clicking on this video.

Yep, we’re reviving the popular The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror theme and creating The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend at Walt Disney World Resort in 2012. If you like to have a scary good time when you run, this race will be the perfect weekend much like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13K race we last staged at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2009.

This new race, scheduled for Sept. 29, will follow a similar course – through the set of “Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show’’ and past Mickey’s Sorcerer’s Hat – but features runDisney’s first-ever 10-mile distance that finishes, appropriately enough, near The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction. If you “survive’’ the experience, you’ll be treated to a shiny new medal and a rocking post-race party with your family and friends that features live music, Disney characters and exclusive access to attractions such as Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, Star Tours, Toy Story Mania! and, of course, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

The new The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror race is our sixth signature runDisney event and the second nighttime race at Walt Disney World Resort. To make room for it, though, we’re shifting our other nighttime event, the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend, to Nov. 9-10 during the final weekend of the popular Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.

Like all runDisney events, the race weekend will feature a variety of events, including a 5K, kid’s races and a Health & Fitness Expo all at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort.

Mark your calendars now for Feb. 14. That’s the day you can start registering for the new race at runDisney.com. Should be a “terror-ably’’ good time.

For Kids’ Sake: Disney Offers $1.5 Million in Grants to Local Nonprofits

For Kids’ Sake: Disney Offers $1.5 Million in Grants to Local Nonprofits

Throughout the year, Walt Disney World Resort works with charities throughout Central Florida to build better futures for local children. As the new year approaches, a total of $1.5 million in financial support is available for eligible local nonprofits through the 2012 Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants program.

“Disney is always looking for ways to invest in community organizations that inspire and improve children’s lives,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of community relations for Walt Disney World Resort. “We believe that through these organizations, children build a strong foundation so they may thrive as capable citizens with the confidence to reach their highest potential. The return on that investment is immeasurable.”

Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants applications are being accepted now through Jan. 31, 2012. Eligible nonprofit organizations in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Polk and Lake counties are encouraged to apply. Grant awards may range from $10,000-$75,000, and will be distributed in spring 2012.

New this year, the program has revised guidelines to reflect a focus on children and families in three major areas: creativity and innovation; caring for ourselves, our community, our world; and caring neighbor. Applications and more details are available online at www.disneyurl.com/2012dhksgrants.

In May 2011, Walt Disney World Resort gave a total of $1.2 million in Disney Helping Kids Shine Grants to 62 nonprofits and school districts. Since 1972, Disney has honored local organizations that benefit children with cash awards totaling more than $12 million.

Best Holiday Gifts: Luggage and Bags for the Disney Lover

Best Holiday Gifts: Luggage and Bags for the Disney Lover

Essential for any Disney vacation are those items you will need to “keep stuff in”, that is luggage, backpacks, tote bags, and diaper bags. The thing is, while these things are necessities, why not add a little “Disney” to something that is basically functional….and make it fun? The benefit of this is, of course, bringing the Disney love along with you PLUS having that happy Disney reminder day in and day out after you get home!

With that in mind then, here are some of my favorite Disney travel accessories (a few of which may end up on my Christmas wish list for our upcoming Disney World trip):

Best Holiday Gifts: Luggage and Bags for the Disney Lover

Disney Princess Luggage: On our first trip to Walt Disney World, one of the things that our daughter (then age 7) was most excited about was having her “own suitcase”. She would have loved the princesses on the outside. I would have loved the hard case and wheels that make it easy for little ones to take care of their own bag.

Best Holiday Gifts: Luggage and Bags for the Disney Lover

Disney Rolling Light-Up Buzz Lightyear Luggage: The solution for little boys, this case will help future Space Rangers to easily travel to Disney World, or Infinity and Beyond, whichever they prefer.

Best Holiday Gifts: Luggage and Bags for the Disney Lover

Blue 3-Piece Rolling Disney Luggage Set: For the grown-up on your list (or maybe you?? 🙂 ) I personally really like this 3 piece set for the sizes available and especially like that the duffle is wheeled. Plus, I love the blue color too. Yeah…this one’s going on my Christmas wish list.

Best Holiday Gifts: Luggage and Bags for the Disney Lover

Black 3-Piece Disney Rolling Mickey Mouse Luggage Set: This one’s for the person who really wants to have their Mickey on when traveling. One of the things I really like about this set is that you can EASILY pick out your luggage at baggage claim at the airport. 🙂

Best Holiday Gifts: Luggage and Bags for the Disney Lover

Tinkerbell Diaper Bag Backpack – Adjustable Shoulder Bag: Know someone who will be traveling to Disney World with a little one? A Disney diaper bag is a great gift idea. I love all the pockets on this one as well as the fact that it can be either a shoulder bag or back pack.

Best Holiday Gifts: Luggage and Bags for the Disney Lover

Disney Mickey Mouse Tote Bag: Having a tote bag of some sort is essential at the parks. At 15” x 17” this bag is roomy and it has a nice interior zippered compartment which I really like. Plus it’s just plain fun…..and also going on my Christmas list!

Best Holiday Gifts: Luggage and Bags for the Disney Lover

Disney Dooney & Bourke Black Tassle Tote: I will readily admit that this does NOT qualify as affordable….but it is gorgeous, and one can hope, right? Disney’s Dooney and Bourke collection is extremely popular and there are many different designs, patterns, and sizes that are available. And while this bag may or may not be in Santa’s budget this year, there are some smaller items like wallets, wristlets and such that can help you be stylishly Disney. But if we’re going to dream….then this is the one I’m dreaming of…..

Hope you found some great Disney Holiday gift items for your favorite Disney traveler…or for your own wishlist! Happy shopping!

Rosewood is a perfect little town. So quiet and pristine, you’d never guess it holds so many secrets. Some of the ugliest ones belong to the prettiest girls in town — Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily, four estranged friends whose darkest secrets are about to unravel.

One year ago, Alison, the Queen Bee of their group, disappeared and the girls swore they’d never tell what really happened that night. They thought their secrets would bond them together, but just the opposite is true. Then again, who’s to say what the truth is in Rosewood. It seems everyone in town is lying about something.

Now, as the mystery surrounding Alison’s disappearance resurfaces, the girls begin getting messages from “A,” saying – and threatening – things only Alison would know. But it couldn’t be Alison. Could it? Whoever it is, they seem to know all the girls’ secrets, and seem to be watching their every move. The girls are friends again, but will they be there for each other if their dark secrets come to light?

Disney DIY – Prep & Landing Crafts & Recipes

Prep & Landing
Wayne and Lanny of Prep & Landing

I’m no pastry chef, as the pictures below will attest, but I’ve had loads of fun in the kitchen today baking up Lanny and Wayne (Prep & Landing) cookies with my little girl. She’s been sick this week, so a day of cooking and crafting was the perfect pick-me-up.

If you’re not familiar with Santa’s techno-savvy, elite elfin team, you can catch the latest episode, “Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice,” online right here. (It airs tonight on ABC at 8/7 Central, btw.) Anyway, Lanny and Wayne are two of Santa’s best helpers. They are the ones who keep track of who’s been naughty and who’s been nice and keep Santa’s database up-to-date. They are also assigned to sort of rehabilitate the naughties and steer them back onto the nice list.

I found several activities at DisneyFamily.com to bring Lanny and Wayne to our home this Christmas. They have printable 3D papercrafts, Lanny’s holiday paper hat, Christmas Carol’s coal cupcakes and wrappers, a printable activity book, and much more! To make the cookies, we purchased prepared sugar cookie dough, a tube of white decorator icing and assorted candies. Then, we followed these instructions:

1)      Cut out the elf head/hat template.

2)      Divide cookie dough in half, coloring one half green and setting the other half aside in the fridge. (If using store-bought dough, knead in a little flour to stiffen the dough so it doesn’t spread when it’s baked.)

3)      On a flour-dusted sheet of waxed paper, roll out green dough to ¼ inch thickness and cut out elf head/hats. Use spatula to transfer to ungreased cookie sheet.

4)      Use a 2-inch diameter round cookie cutter to cut out the faces. Place unused green circles on separate baking sheet.

5)      Now roll out plain dough on flour-dusted waxed paper to ¼ inch thickness and cut out 2-inch circles from it. Insert those plain dough circles into the green elf head/hats on cookie tray.

6)      Place cookies tray(s) into oven and bake according to recipe or package directions. Allow to cool on baking tray two minutes before transferring to wire rack to cool completely.

7)      Decorate as shown. The Disney Family recipe calls for small chocolate wafer cookies for the goggles, but I couldn’t find anything small enough, so I used Starburst Gummibursts for the eyes. Also, instead of a jelly bean, I used Mini Chewy Sweet Tarts for the nose and ball on the cap. If you have them, you can add a pinch of yellow sprinkles to half of them to make Lanny’s tuft of hair.

Here’s how ours turned out.

Prep & Landing cookies
Prep & Landing cookies

We also gave the elf on the shelf a little Disney kick! We downloaded the Prep & Landing elves template and gathered the following supplies: scissors, straight pins, felt (green, tan, black and red), pipe cleaners or chenille sticks (red, white and green), cool-temp hot glue gun, brown yarn, cotton ribbon or strip of felt, faux gems, red pompom, scraps of green fleece or felt, green ribbon and cardboard tissue tube. Then, we followed these simple instructions:

1)      Cut out the template and designated pieces of felt.

2)       For each elf, hot glue the upper edge of one of the two body shapes atop the lower edge of one of the head/hat pieces. Then, bend a pipe cleaner into an inverted V-shape and glue it onto the joined felt.

3)      Make arms for each elf by first twisting together a white and a red pipe cleaner (I used shimmery red and silver) and then hot gluing it to the center of a felt arm piece.

4)      Apply more glue along the edge of the felt below the pipe cleaner and then fold the felt onto it, enclosing the pipe cleaner. Bend the ends of the pipe cleaner to resemble mini candy canes.

5)      Glue one set of arms to each elf body.

6)      Next, make legs. For each one, cut a 5-inch length of inch-wide cotton ribbon or felt and glue the sides together at the very bottom, pinching them to create an “ankle” that is half the width.

7)      Then glue two red felt elf shoes together with the ankle sandwiched between them as shown. (FYI, the template only tells you to cut out 4, but you need to cut out 8!)

8)      Attach a pair of legs to each of the remaining two body shapes by hot gluing the tops to the inner felt. Then glue the body (with the attached legs) to the matching body/arm assembly along the sides and neck, leaving the bottom open.

9)      For each elf, glue the felt lenses in place for goggles. Then glue the goggles to the upper third of the face, as shown.

10)  Glue on the nose so that the top slightly overlaps the bridge of the goggles. Now glue the face onto the remaining head/hat piece.
Note: If you want your elf to have hair, simply sandwich a few wisps of cotton yarn between the upper face and the hat when gluing the pieces together.

11)  Glue the assembled face to the body, sandwiching a pair of elf ears between the two green felt head/hat pieces. Stick on the goggle gems and hot glue a red pompom to the top of the hat.

12)  For the finishing touches, glue a strip of fleece or felt trim (we used gliterry felt) around the bottom of each elf body. Add ribbon belts and faux gem buttons and belt buckles.

13)  To help the elves sit upright, cut a short ring from a paper towel tube and insert it in the body. For the slim elf, cut another ring from the tube and slit it all the way up one side. Then re-roll the ring more tightly so that it’s narrow enough to insert in the body. Set them on a shelf to observe your kids’ naughty—I mean NICE—behavior!

The felt elves were a bit time consuming, but they turned out great (better than the cookies, as you can see). I’ve been working on elf projects so much today that I think turning into one!

You can get full instructions and see detailed photos of all Prep & Landing related crafts and recipes at DisneyFamily.com

P.S. If you have any suggestions for getting green food coloring stains off my fingers, I’d greatly appreciate your advice in the comments below. Thanks!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Switched at Birth, a one-hour scripted drama, tells the story of two teenage girls who discover they were accidentally switched as newborns in the hospital. Bay Kennish grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother, while Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing at an early age due to a case of meningitis, grew up with a single mother in a working-class neighborhood. Disney Marathon Training – Final Race Preparations

Disney Marathon Training - Final Race Preparations

With Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend right around the corner, runners all around the world are finishing up their training and getting ready to start packing.  Marathon Weekend officially begins on Thursday, January 5th, 2012, with the opening of the marathon expo and the races begin Friday morning with the 5k and first day of Family Fest Kids Races.

Near the end of endurance training begins tapering – shortening the distance in your long runs and allowing your body to rest to be prepared for the big race (or races, if you may be running Goofy or any other combination).   Hopefully by now, you are comfortable with your shoes, running gear, and any other equipment you may need for a long race.

One good thing about Disney races is that, if you so choose, you can skip bringing your own water bottles on the race.  Constantly along the race are hydration stops – both water and an electrolyte beverage- if you’re really picky, it may not be the brand you’re used to, but it can still save the hassle of wearing a belt!

Another issue with a Florida January race is weather – what to wear?  Forecasts are predicting to be around 76 degrees with lows in the 50’s/60’s, but it can always be colder in warmer!  Florida in January is not known for it’s predictable weather – a few years ago, the racers dealt with sleet, rain, and incredibly cold weather!

Having to be outside and lining up an hour or more before race time can cause stress of what to wear for the running – but don’t fret.  If you choose, you can wear extra layers that you don’t mind donating to charity – shed them on the course when you warm up, and VoluntEARS will collect them and donate them to local charities.

Hope you’re excited for the race and maybe we’ll see you there!
