Disney in Christmas – Our Family Traditions

Disney in Christmas - Our Family Traditions

We love everything Disney but the ornaments are one of the best parts of vacation!
Before our daughter was born we made several trips but for some reason we never collected
ornaments *I believe that I’ll start buying one extra per trip for our memories Before Erinlee*.
When our daughter was born we knew it would be a while before making it to the Happiest Place on
Earth because you see my husband is in the Navy.We were stationed in England and didn’t want to make
a trip to FL for vacation so we were saving up for the time when we did make it back home.
Our daughter was 4 months old for her first Christmas and we bought her a set of Pooh Bear Storybook
Ornaments and this is when the tradition started.Every year since we have found a set that fits her personality
or her favorite Disney characters for that year.I write a few paragraphs on the inside cover just to remind her
how special she is to us and where we were for that special Christmas. She gets to open them on Christmas Eve to hang for Santa to see.
Last year we had to buy them from a third party because apparently Disney isn’t selling them anymore.I bought Sleeping Beauty
because that is her favorite Princeess. This year I found a “set” but it’s not the same without the storybook but I will try and find
a special set every Christmas for her as long as I can.

Disney in Christmas - Our Family Traditions

We also buy Hidden Mickey ornaments on every trip we make.Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party,Birthdays,Cheer Competitions

and Disney Cruises. They are all complete with the dates we travel, the purpose of the trip and the special PIXIE DUST added by the
CM.

Disney in Christmas - Our Family Traditions

I hope you have a MAGICAL Christmas and a WONDERFUL 2012!!

Disney’s PhotoPass helps Guests capture even more WDW memories

Disney's PhotoPass helps Guests capture even more WDW memories

My husband and I are both BIG on taking pictures, and on our recent Disney vacation we took over 2000 pictures on 5 different cameras. So, when I heard about Disney’s PhotoPass, I wasn’t too interested, I knew we loved taking our own pictures and didn’t think it would be of much use to us

We were at Epcot last week, at the Epcot Character Spot (which is awesome by the way, a super smart thing Disney is doing – giving certain characters semi-permanent homes for people to come and meet them, and you can even get Fastpasses for it!), and as it was our turn to meet the fab five (Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Donald, and Goofy!), the Cast Member handed us a PhotoPass, and we went through and had our pictures taken and each time, they scanned the PhotoPass and that was it, it was simple, easy, and I was hooked.

Disney's PhotoPass helps Guests capture even more WDW memories

So a quick overview on how it works, you can get a (free!) PhotoPass card from any PhotoPass Photographer (they are all over all the parks, they are the Cast Members carrying the huge cameras), and you hand them the card, pose for a few pictures in front of the castle/Tower of Terror/and tons of other photo op areas, then they scan the pictures to the card and you are on your way. After your trip (or during, if you’re like me and can’t wait), you can go to the website DisneyPhotoPass.com, register the code on your card (or cards, in case you end up with multiple), and voila, your images are all there to view and purchase online (they even have a mobile version of the website the smartphone users out there!)

If you decide you want to order any prints, it can get pricey really fast…2 4×6 prints are $14.95, and an 8×10 is $16.95. They have some cool Photo Products to chose from on the website, from photo books (starting at $79.95), to photo stickers ($9.95 a sheet), to mugs, mousepads, greeting cards and more. If you have a lot of PhotoPass photos taken on your trip, it might be worth the splurge to order the Photo CD, a compact disc of all your photo pass photos. They photos come in high quality jpeg format, and you also receive a license to be able to reprint the photos as you choose. The price for the CD is $149.95, with additional copies at $19.95 each. If you are doing a big family trip or it’s your first trip, this could be a great souvenir for you to relive all those Disney memories.

The best part about it, in my opinion, is that they will take pictures with your camera too, so in case you aren’t thrilled about Disney’s PhotoPass prices, you can have something similar for free. The downside is, the PhotoPass pictures really are nicer, the camera they use is high end, and the ones at night in particular come out much better when the pros do it.

So for those of you who love having your picture taken (like me!) and want a way to capture even more Disney fun, try the PhotoPass next time you at Walt Disney World. It’s free, easy, and a great way to get that perfect family photo for next year’s Christmas card!

About “Beauty and the Beast”

Walt Disney Animation Studios‘ magical tale “Beauty and the Beast” returns to the big screen in Disney Digital 3D(TM), introducing a whole new generation to the Disney classic. The film captures the fantastic journey of Belle (voice of Paige O’Hara), a bright and beautiful young woman who’s taken prisoner by a hideous beast (voice of Robby Benson) in his castle. Despite her precarious situation, Belle befriends the castle’s enchanted staff–a teapot, a candelabra and a mantel clock, among others–and ultimately learns to see beneath the Beast’s exterior to discover the heart and soul of a prince.

D23′s From The Vaults: Newsies

D23′s From The Vaults: Newsies

D23 announces a new screening series as a part of its ever-growing roster of special events for its members. Our new From the Vaults film screenings is dedicated to favorite films created by Disney that the D23 team is excited to share on the big screen once again. We are kicking off this new series with a 20th anniversary screening of the 1992 Disney film musical Newsies.

D23 is happy to offer its members (and their guests) the opportunity to see the music-filled film at the historic Walt Disney Studios (presented in the state-of-the-art, 400-seat, Studio Theatre).

Released two decades ago, the film, which followed the real-life newsboy strike of 1899 in New York City and stars Christian Bale and Robert Duvall, wasn’t an instant hit. However, through the years the film has gained a fan following for its impressive songs, exuberant production numbers and timeless tale of good triumphing over greed. The movie’s latter-day popularity recently inspired a stage version, which opened in September of 2011 and received rave reviews at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse.

The film features a musical score by Oscar® winner and Disney Legend Alan Menken and also marked the directorial debut of Kenny Ortega, who had choreographed movies like Footloose and Dirty Dancing and went on to helm the High School Musical series, as well as last year’s Michael Jackson concert film, This Is It.

The movie event will also feature a limited selection of D23 merchandise and a special gift just for each D23 Member who attends, as well as the opportunity to mix and mingle with your fellow D23 Members at the Walt Disney Studios!

Disney Tips On Baking a Bûche de Noël with recipe

Disney Tips On Baking a Bûche de Noël with recipe

The Yule Log, or bûche de Noël, is a traditional French Christmas cake shaped and decorated to look like a log. It’s a fancy holiday treat that takes a little time – but is well worth it when you take the first bite of chocolate, chocolate, chocolate.

Pastry chef Deran Lanpher from Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Bakery shows us how it’s done. The delicious treat is on the menu at Yachtsman Steakhouse and Cape May Café for just two days – Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

A couple of tips: rolling the cake is the trickiest part, so make sure it’s still moist when it comes out of the oven. And when whisking the egg whites for the cake, make sure to use a copper, glass or stainless steel bowl for maximum volume.

Enjoy!

Yule Log

Serves 6 to 8

Chocolate chiffon cake
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1/3 cup plus 3 teaspoons sugar, divided
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
2 teaspoons milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 egg whites
Pinch cream of tartar

Chocolate Mousse Cremeux
2 eggs, separated
2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons sugar, divided
6 ounces dark semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped
3 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup extra heavy cream

Chocolate Ganache
8 ounces dark chocolate
3/4 cups heavy cream
Crushed peppermint candy, for garnish

For chiffon cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat a 13x9x2-inch baking pan with nonstick spray. Measure and cut a piece of parchment paper to line bottom of pan and spray with nonstick spray.
  2. Sift together flour, cocoa powder, 1/3 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt and place in bowl of an electric mixer fitted with paddle attachment. With mixer running at slow speed, add egg, oil, milk, and vanilla extract one at a time, scraping bowl after each addition until mixture is smooth. Transfer batter to a large bowl.
  3. After thoroughly cleaning mixer bowl, combine egg whites, remaining 3 teaspoons sugar, and cream of tartar. Whip on high speed until soft peaks form. Fold one-third of egg white mixture into cake batter, then fold remaining egg white mixture into batter.
  4. Spread batter evenly into prepared pan. Batter will be only 1/4-inch deep. Bake 6 to 10 minutes, just until set. Do not overbake.
  5. Remove cake from oven, let cool for 10 minutes. While cake is still warm, slide it out of pan, with parchment still attached, onto a clean kitchen towel. Trim crispy edges off the long sides of the cake. Beginning at one narrow end, use the towel to roll cake—along with parchment paper—into a cylinder.

For mousse cremeux:

  1. Combine egg yolks and 2 tablespoons sugar in a large bowl; whisk until light in color and thickened to a soft peak, about 3 minutes.
  2. Fill a medium saucepan about halfway with water. Bring water to a simmer. Combine chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl and place bowl over simmering water, making sure bowl does not touch water. Stir chocolate mixture constantly until completely melted. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
  3. When chocolate mixture is room temperature, stir into egg yolk mixture.
  4. Place egg whites in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with whisk attachment. Beat until frothy, then add remaining 2 teaspoons sugar, beating until medium peaks form.
  5. Whip heavy cream on high speed until soft peaks form.
  6. Gently fold egg white mixture into chocolate mixture, then gently fold in whipped cream. (Some streaks of cream may remain, do not overmix.) Refrigerate until cold.

For ganache:
Place chocolate in a large heatproof bowl. Heat heavy cream in a medium saucepan over medium heat until hot but not boiling. Whisk in cream until combined. Set aside until slightly cool but still spreadable.

To assemble:

  1. Carefully unroll cake from towel; remove towel. Spread mousse over cake surface. Using parchment paper to lift up a narrow edge of the cake, roll it back up, over the mousse, peeling off parchment paper as you go.
  2. Once cake is rolled, wrap parchment paper around it to keep it round and place cake seam side down on a platter. Refrigerate about 1 hour, until firm.
  3. Remove parchment paper from cake and ice with ganache. Sprinkle with crushed peppermint candy. Refrigerate until ganache is set, about 30 minutes, before serving.

Top Disney Vacation Gifts to Make the Trip Easier

Top Disney Vacation Gifts to Make the Trip Easier

Wondering what to give a friend or family member who is planning a big vacation to Disney World (or anywhere else for that matter)? Or perhaps it is you taking the big trip and people need gift ideas for you? Either way, Christmas gifts are the perfect way to help make future traveling a bit easier, less stressful, and just more fun. Here are few of my favorite travel essentials that will make great gifts for anyone:

Top Disney Vacation Gifts to Make the Trip Easier

A GPS: Anyone planning a big drive to Walt Disney World…or who will be renting a car at Disney World needs to have one of these. Those of us who grew up with “maps” are especially in awe of how helpful a good GPS can be. And if you have an older one like we do, this is the perfect time to upgrade to a new model, as the prices are rarely cheaper than you will find right now.

DVD Player: Road Trip! Few words strike more fear into the hearts of parents everywhere than these two little words. Mental images of backseat fights, and threats of “Don’t make me come back there!” immediately come to mind. Of course there are a number of ways to make the time pass (and I’ll talk about another one shortly) but one of the most successful is movies. Having car DVD player can save everyone’s sanity….and with some well-chosen Disney movies, you can get everyone “in the mood” while you’re at it!

Top Disney Vacation Gifts to Make the Trip Easier

But what if you’re not driving, but still want to keep the troops entertained while waiting in the airport…or even on the flight? Portable DVD Player to the rescue!!

And to make sure that everyone is happy when your kids want to watch Monsters Inc. 4 times in a row, don’t forget the headphones. 🙂  Just sayin’.

Travel Kiddy: Back in the day, before it was possible to bring movies along with you in the car to entertain the kids, I made a trip to the toy store before every trip, to make a travel fun bag for our daughter. Filled with lots of fun games and things to keep her entertained, the travel fun bag made our trips much happier for everyone. Even now, while movies are great, there will be times when it’s time to turn the thing off and do something else. And Travel Kiddy is the perfect solution: travel fun bags already created, filled with hours and HOURS of entertainment for little ones and big ones too! The Travel Kiddy site is divided into different ages, and even includes a section for puzzles and games for older kids and adults. Not sure what would be best for someone else? They even sell gift certificates. This is a great site with tons of great travel items already packed and waiting to leave on vacation with you. No need to make your own. 🙂

So there you go, gift suggestions for making the trip to Walt Disney World happier for the kids….and therefore happier for the adults. Whether it’s for your family, or for someone on your gift list, I hope these gift suggestions will help. Happy shopping!

Nancy, her husband and college-age daughter live in the Baltimore MD area, but consider Walt Disney World their second “home”. She started her site, The Affordable Mouse, as a way to share ideas about how to plan affordable Disney vacations. She will be posting live updates from her family’s upcoming New Year’s Disney vacation on The Affordable Mouse facebook page.

Disney’s Support of Covenant House Helps Youth Build Solid Foundation

Disney’s Support of Covenant House Helps Youth Build Solid Foundation

During the holidays and throughout the year, Walt Disney World Resort provides cash and in-kind support to hundreds of local organizations that aim to build brighter futures for children and families.

One such organization benefitting from Disney’s ongoing outreach is Covenant House Florida, which focuses on helping runaway, homeless and at-risk youth – including teen parents and their babies.

Earlier this year, Disney donated enough surplus carpeting to refurbish the organization’s entire center, replacing worn-down flooring with hundreds of feet of new carpet and padding.

Maria Shorkey, Covenant House community relations director, said the donation helps provide a safer and more comfortable surface for toddlers and young children to crawl and play.

“The kids are always playing or doing activities on the floor and new, clean carpet makes a world of difference for them,” said Shorkey.

Disney supports Covenant House in other ways too. Recently, hundreds of Central Floridians gathered at Lake Eola for Covenant House’s annual candlelight vigil to show support and raise awareness of homeless youth in the community. As part of its ongoing community outreach efforts, Walt Disney World served as a sponsor of the event.

Angie Sola, Walt Disney World Resort community relations program manager, works closely with Covenant House and attendedthe ceremony.

“The vigil is a very humbling experience and a reminder not to take anything for granted,” Sola said. “We hope that bringing exposure to the issue of homelessness will move the community to find and fund solutions so no child feels they are alone in the world.”

Walt Disney World gave the organization a $28,000 Disney Helping Kids Shine grant earlier this year to help fund its Bright Beginnings program, in which children facing extreme poverty participate in creative activities that help build character, stimulate their development and strengthen the relationship between parent and child.

Grants like these help Covenant House Florida provide food and shelter, as well as life skills and education programs to those in need. Last year, the center in Orlando offered resources to more than 200 youths.

Writers Sue Disney over Santa Paws Movies

The 2010 the Disney Film, ‘The Search For Santa Paws’ went straight to DVD. It is a heart-warming tale where Santa adopts a misfit dog with big paws. When Ray Harter, Ed Corno and Richard Kerney heard the story they were not filled with Christmas cheer. It felt like the grinch had given them a visit.

In the 1990’s the group had worked for an advertising firm and had written a story called, “Santa Paws: The Story Of Santa’s Dog.” In 1996 Disney had expressed interest in their story to their agent. Now the writers have filed suit for copyright infringement because the Disney DVDs are so similar to their story written in the ’90s.

The suit is being filed against Disney, WME, Buena Vista, Key Pix, Robert Vance, Anna McRoberts, John Ferriter, Barry Jeffery and many more defendants.
