Runners Set Their Sights New Features for Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend

The ever popular Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend presented by CIGNA returns Jan. 5-8, 2012 with two new features – a relay option and a new medal.

Runners in the 26.2 mile Disney Marathon can now join a buddy for the Disney Marathon Relay.  Unlike other marathon relays, runners at Disney will each run 13.1 miles through Walt Disney World’s four theme parks.  The first runner will travel through Epcot and Magic Kingdom, while the second runner goes through Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios before finishing at Epcot.  Both runners receive official half-marathon times as well as a combined team time, plus the new Chip and Dale medal – the first new character medal for Disney Marathon Weekend since the Goofy medal was introduced in 2006.  The Disney Marathon Relay will be run simultaneously with the Disney Marathon and share the same course.

The Walt Disney World Half Marathon also will offer a new feature – a special edition Donald Duck medal to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the race.

The Disney Marathon Weekend will include a variety of events, including the Disney Family 5k Fun Run (Jan. 6), Disney Kid’s Races (Jan. 6-7), and Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge (Jan. 7-8).  There’s also Disney’s Health & Fitness Expo (Jan. 5-8) at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, which will feature the latest in running merchandise, equipment and products, plus health and fitness seminars by leading authorities such as renowned marathon trainer Jeff Galloway, the official training consultant for runDisney. Menu Changes at Ohana’s – Bye Bye Bread Pudding

Menu Changes at Ohana's - Bye Bye Bread Pudding

One of my absolute favorite desserts at Walt Disney World is Ohana‘s Bread Pudding with Bananas Foster Sauce at the Polynesian Resort. I have eaten this treat over 20 times and we always make it a point to stop here on EVERY Disney World visit.

Last week I awoke to an email from my writer Pixie Brenda who delivered to me some sad news..

Chip,

There is no more bread pudding with bananas foster sauce at Ohana. They changed it to pineapple coconut bread pudding with caramel sauce.

Not nearly as good!

Also

They are under new mgmt so had some food changes. Others include chicken instead of turkey and the sauce on the pork is different.

*Update – So far there is still no change on the menu printed outside, still bread pudding with banana caramel sauce. I have heard mixed reports as they haven’t officially changed to this dessert that it is still being tested. So its hard to say what you will end up with…

I want to hear your thoughts on this change. Should Disney have left well enough alone? Or was it time for a change?

Winter Holidays with Disney Cruise Line

Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale, and Mickey Mouse Celebrate the Holidays on the Disney Dream

Earlier this month we gave you an inside look at decorating the Disney Dream for her very first holiday season. Now that the trees are up, the garland is hung and holiday spirit is in the air, we checked in with Mickey Mouse and his friends to see how they are celebrating this special time of year on the ship.

Along with Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale, Mickey Mouse flashed his smile in front of the 20-foot-tall tree in the atrium lobby of the Disney Dream.

He told us about some of the special onboard holiday events including:

  • Nightly tree lighting in the atrium lobby, where a young guest helps Disney characters light the glittering, three-deck-tall tree
  • Family holiday crafts such as decorating stockings, building gingerbread houses and making holiday cards
  • Holiday storytellers sharing tales of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa
  • Traditional holiday feasts in the themed dining rooms

At Castaway Cay, Santa Goofy snuck off to do some decorating of his own…

…while Pluto started playing in the “snow flurries” amidst the island’s special decorations.

There’s no doubt about it, holidays with Disney Cruise Line are magical. But even if you aren’t celebrating this year on a Disney ship, the crew sends this special message:

Giving is our Way at Disney - a Poem

To the tune of “Winter Wonderland”

Community called, we were listening,
At the ready, our smiles a glistening
Bringing holiday cheer,
And donating all year,
Giving is our way at Disneyland.

We gave away – record donations
To charities, and foundations
$13 million was contributed,
in So Cal it was distributed
Giving is our way at Disneyland.

For the kids cast members held a toy drive,
Led by the one and only Mickey Mouse
He said: Are you giving?
We said: Yes Mic,
Thousands to the Toys-for-Tots warehouse.

Our wish program —  we conspired,
By the children, we were inspired
With characters enchanted
550 wish trips granted,
Giving is our way at Disneyland.

At a park together we built a playground,
For Anaheim children it did please
Adopt-a-Family helped 700 people,
Marine families received lots of Christmas trees.

Ticket requests, came to fruition,
For nonprofits – theme park admission,
16 thousand donations,
to 4 thousand organizations,
Giving is our way at Disneyland.

The call for help, we were listenin’
VoluntEARs workin’ and whistlin’
85 thousand hours this year,
One hundred sixty events with our gear,
Giving is our way at Disneyland.

In the schools we helped to build art programs,
About 200 grants that we gave
College aid for 10 high school seniors,
Five thousand in tuition each will save.

To volunteer, the feeling’s thrilling,
Dreams at CHOC, we are a’ filling
At the CHOC Walk day,
Or holiday party to play,
Giving is our way at Disneyland.

Giving is our way at Disneyland.

Disney in Christmas: Celebrating at home

Disney in Christmas: Celebrating at home
Disney Movie Rewards Ornament

I’m a little different than many Disney fanatics when it comes to celebrating Christmas.  We really don’t have a whole lot of Disney things that we incorporate into our Christmas decorations.  We really only have a few Christmas ornaments that are Disney themed.  So for this Christmas article, I thought I would share photos of those ornaments, as well as talk about what I would love to do at Christmas one year.

Disney in Christmas: Celebrating at home
Applying Lipstick

My wife Cindy’s favorite character is Daisy Duck, so it is totally appropriate that we have Daisy on our Christmas tree!  And what’s Daisy without Donald as well, as you can see in these romantic ornaments!

Disney in Christmas: Celebrating at home
Donald Seranading Daisy

Disney in Christmas: Celebrating at home
Squeemish Donald!

In addition to these ornaments, we also have one I really like.  Before we went to LED lights, we would put this ornament on a spinner we hooked up to our light sets so that Mickey would spin around and around.

Disney in Christmas: Celebrating at home
All of those are for Minnie!

The last ornament that we have that is Disney related is from Cars.  Lightning McQueen and Mater were given to me by my sister, they are always put on the tree.

Lightning McQueen and Mater

One year I would love to take Cindy and Sophie to Walt Disney World for Christmas.  It is a dream I have, I want to experience Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, Cinderella Castle all decked out in Christmas lights, the Candlelight Processional over at Epcot’s World Showcase, and the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights over a Disney’s Hollywood Studios!
