Disney Releases “The Lion King: Timon’s Tale” and “Tangled” for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch

Disney Releases "The Lion King: Timon's Tale" and "Tangled" for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch

Disney Publishing Worldwide today unveils two new storybook apps featuring original scenes from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ feature films, The Lion King (1994) and Tangled (2010). The “The Lion King: Timon’s Tale” and “Tangled: Storybook Deluxe” Apps, available now for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, are the first full-length interactive storybook apps to integrate specially rendered film animation, inviting children and Disney fans alike to re-live the classic tales.

“With the launch of our Lion King and Tangled apps, we are able to give families a new, dynamic way to read two classic stories from the convenience of their iPad, iPhone or iPod touch,” said Russell Hampton, president, Disney Publishing Worldwide. “We were fortunate to work closely with Walt Disney Animation Studios for a reading experience that features both brand new animation and actual film content that can be accessed on a variety of mobile devices. Disney Publishing is committed to making our stories accessible to children across all platforms, allowing them to read wherever, whenever, whatever, and however they want.”

Complete with customized interactivity, rich character development, and an Academy Award®-winning score—“The Lion King: Timon’s Tale” recounts Simba’s exciting adventures of becoming king, as told through the eyes of the comical and irreverent meerkat sidekick, Timon. Readers are asked to roar with King Mufasa, snatch grubs with Timon, draw with Rafiki, and swing with Pumbaa.

“Tangled: Storybook Deluxe” recounts the magical adventures of Rapunzel as she sets off on an action-packed journey across the kingdom with thief Flynn Rider—learning there is so much more to life outside the tower where she was held captive.  Full of vibrant illustrations, word-for-word narration, charming sound effects, and original character voices, readers can play the “Catch Pascal” animated activity and “Catch the Lantern” games, record their own voices, read and explore, and solve puzzles throughout.

The Lion King: Timon’s Tale” and “Tangled: Storybook Deluxe” Apps are available for $4.99 and $6.99 respectively from the App Store on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore.

Disney Planning & Photos: Is Christmas a Good Time to Go to Disney World?

Disney Planning & Photos: Is Christmas a Good Time to Go to Disney World?

Disney Christmas decorations are amazingly beautiful, and it’s a magical time to be in Orlando. But is Christmas really the best time of year for you to visit Walt Disney World?

From Christmas Day to New Years is the absolute busiest time of year at WDW. I’ve been multiple times during this week, and crowd levels can feel absolutely insane, most especially mid-afternoon. But if you can only take off time from work during this week, and thousands do, should you brave the holiday crowds?  If you just need to be in the Disney parks after Christmas, get ready to stand in long lines and be surrounded by huge crowds everywhere you go.

Disney Planning & Photos: Is Christmas a Good Time to Go to Disney World?
Main Street, U.S.A., on Christmas Eve, with thousands of your closest friends.

Last year after Christmas, three of four Disney parks reached capacity. If you can calmly imagine standing shoulder to shoulder with up to 92,000 people in the Magic Kingdom at one time, then you must really want to be vacationing at Disney World. I found our best option was to leave the parks around 1 p.m. and go back in around 6 or 7. It’s still busy- crazy busy- but people start to leave after the fireworks, and lines are more manageable, especially if they offer Extra Magic Hours and you stay in a Disney Resort. But make no mistake, it’s still packed-out and really only a last resort vacationing choice if you just can’t schedule a visit any other time of year. Thanksgiving weekend is also very busy, but there are other options.

Books like The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World, which also runs touring plans.com, suggest two alternate times. This way you can still see the holiday decorations without waiting 2 hours to ride Space Mountain.

  •  Thanksgiving to the week before Christmas.
  •  The second full week of November through the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Now of course, anyone reading up on the best time to go to WDW that can, will try to schedule vacations during this time of year, and it will be more crowded then as well. But it can’t get any more crowded than right after Christmas.

Disney Planning & Photos: Is Christmas a Good Time to Go to Disney World?
The beauty of a Magic Kingdom Christmas.

I’ve stood on Main Street as the clock struck midnight on Christmas Eve, ushering in a fantastic Christmas Day. The Disney snow was falling, the holiday lights were twinkling, Christmas carols were playing, and thousands of people were waiting to descend upon the Disney parks. Do I recommend people go right at Christmas like we did? No. Would I go again at that time? Yes. It all depends on how bad you want to feel that Disney magic.

Avoid Adult Meltdowns By Toting These 5 Items To The Parks!

Avoid Adult Meltdowns By Toting These 5 Items To The Parks!
My husband sporting a poncho AND a versatile messenger bag!

Adults may be older, and more mature than kids (well…in theory anyway!), but after a long day at Walt Disney World of waiting in lines, sweating from the sun, and walking for miles, even adults are prone to meltdowns. They can’t always be avoided, but they can be less painful if you make sure you have these five items on you at all times while touring the Parks:

1. A Water Bottle: Ideally a sturdy reusable one, I prefer something that holds 16-24 oz (I find the big ones that hold 32 oz or more take up too much space/are too heavy when full), and I like to fill it up at the Resort food court before I head out for the day to the Parks, and then refill it several times as I go through the day. You want to make sure you are drinking plenty of water (soda/juice may give you a sugar boost but water is a smarter choice to keep you hydrated!), and if you want to drink in style check out the adorable water bottle I got at my favorite store, Target, that I will be bringing with me to WDW in April (they have a few different designs, these are a perfect way to show your Disney spirit as you re-hydrate!)

2. Sunscreen: For some people this may seem like a no-brainer, but I know a lot of people who have the “I don’t need sunscreen I never burn” mentality, which is not a good one to have when you’re spending the day in the sun in Florida. Everyone, no matter what skin tone/burnability level, should carry and use sunscreen while at Disney, it’s just the smart thing to do! I recommend bringing your favorite kind from home, as you can buy several kinds in the Parks but they are expensive (like twice as much as at home), and they might not have your preferred brand/SPF available. Reapplying is important too, every 2 hours or so I like to put on another layer – this is a great thing to do while in line for a ride/attraction, makes time go by faster and helps protect you from harmful UV rays!

3. Snacks: There is food all over the Disney Parks – snack carts, counter service and sit down restaurants, walk up windows….you name it, they have it, and believe me it all tastes super delicious! However, those little snacks ($4 here, $5 there) can add up really fast, not to mention that the cost of Park snacks tends to be inflated (ie-overpriced in some cases!), and there aren’t always the healthiest options available. Bringing some things from home can save you money and from hunger – things that are small and travel well, like granola bars, 100 calorie packs, and packages of dried fruit/trail mix are great to help tide you over between giant cookies and Mickey Ice Cream Bars. Don’t forget to pack a cooler.

4. Ponchos: It will most likely rain at least once on your WDW vacation, so I recommend you come prepared with ponchos – they can be purchased at Target/Walmart for under $10 each, and are generally thick and rainproof and will keep you pretty dry. They can be slightly bulky to pack in your Parks bag, so as an alternative – you can purchase thin plastic ponchos at a dollar store. They are definitely not great quality, and won’t keep you as dry, but they are better than nothing and are a lot smaller than the more expensive ponchos mentioned above. When it starts raining, you can always dash into the nearest souvenir shop and purchase Disney Ponchos, but I like to bring my own so I don’t have to rush off and spend more money and risk getting wet in the process!

5. Ziploc Baggies: These are useful for a lot of things – mainly, saving part of a snack that you bought but couldn’t finish all of (like a Butterfinger Cupcake or other delicious baked good!), and to save your most important items from rain/rides – I keep all batteries, cameras, cell phones, important paperwork and wallets in their own baggies, in case that rain is enough to soak through my messenger bag (which can happen, trust me!). I bring several baggies in varying sizes, and the gallon size ones are great for stashing your wet ponchos after the rain has stopped!

Be sure to pack all of these in a Ride-Friendly Bag – one that will fit easily between your legs/around you when on rides – I prefer a messenger bag for toting around the parks, its big enough and easy to open and my husband and I can take turns carrying it (another important quality, as you don’t want one person stuck with lugging it around all day!)

Another general tip that I know has been mentioned before by many people (but definitely bears repeating!), is be sure to wear sneakers when going to the Parks. Personally, I hate wearing sneakers with shorts, I think it looks dorky and makes my feet look huge, and would rather wear flip flops any day…except for days at Walt Disney World that is! Years of experience have taught me that sneakers offer more support, and are more comfortable long term – so as much as you may want to let your feet breathe freely in those flip flops – save them for trips to the pool, you’ll be glad you did!

Some of the 5 items listed above may seem obvious and easy, but trust me it’s just as easy to forget these items, and you will definitely be sorry if you are stuck without them! Bringing these items will help keep everyone happy, and that is what you want when you’re vacationing in the Happiest Place on Earth! Also be sure to check my other article Disney World Quick Tips – Adults, don’t leave home without these items for more.

Benefits of staying on Disney World Property

Benefits of staying on Disney World Property

“It’s just a place to sleep” is the theory of hotel choice for many traveling families; including those traveling to Walt Disney World. On the heels of the increase in ticket price you may be tempted to start re-analyzing your Disney vacation and seeing where you can cut costs…the bulk of which lies in your accommodations. Extra Magical Hours are a great way to experience the parks without the crowds, and the Florida heat!

Your “room key” serves as your dining plan (if you selected one), your park admission, and your room key. You can also opt to add charging privileges to your card and eliminate the need to carry cash. Charging privileges can be customized, so if you don’t want your children going on a shopping spree you can choose to have your credit card linked to the adults cards only. Disney cast members are available 24/7 to make sure your having a magical experience. Visit the front desk for park hours, time guides and maps or stop over at the concierge desk to rearrange dining reservations. The phone in your room can connect you to any major department with the touch of a button, so Disney service is always at your disposal.

Transportation –  Disney’s Magical Express is a complimentary service for Disney Resort guests that includes round trip ground transportation from airport to resort. The Magical Express bus will pick you up at the airport and take you to your resort. You don’t even have to worry about your luggage, place the provided yellow luggage tags on your checked baggage and Disney will take care of the rest. The transportation doesn’t end when you arrive at your resort. Transportation options include buses, monorails and boats to take you to the theme parks, you can also utilize them to get to other resorts.

Yes you need to stay on property. If you haven’t experienced the benefits of being on property now is the time! Safety Tat Product Review

Safety Tat

Did you see Chip’s article introducing you to the new child safety product, SafetyTat®, “The Tat That Brings Kids Back!”? I recently had the opportunity to try them out on my own child.

Safety Tat creator Michelle Welsh came up with the idea when she and her husband took their three children on an outing to a busy entertainment venue. Feeling anxious in the crowds, she wrote her phone number on each of her kids, so that if they got separated, they would be able to reconnect with Mom and Dad. It put her mind at ease; however, the ball point ink smeared and wore off and needed to be refreshed several times throughout the day. Thus, the idea for a child id tattoo was born.

Safety Tats are available in several varieties:

  • The Original Safety Tat is preprinted and applied with water, like a traditional play tattoo, and lasts from one to five days.
  • Quick Stick Write-On Safety Tats are made of the proprietary tattoo material Tateck®, which is ultra-durable, skin-safe, waterproof and sweatproof. The Write-On Tats require no water, adhere directly to the skin, and last up to two weeks or until you are ready to remove them. Write-On Tats are blank, allowing you to fill in your contact information with the accompanying waterproof tattoo marking pen.
  • Safety Tat QR is the new “smarter” Tat. Made of the same material as the Write-On Tats, Safety Tat QR offers the same convenient application and lasting durability but includes more information at the scan of a code. Safety Tat QR displays a preprinted emergency contact phone number and a QR—Quick Response—code readable by applications on iPhones and other smart phones. Parents can include up to 90 characters’ worth of additional information, such as contact names, child’s allergies or alternate phone numbers.

Safety Tat QR

Since my son is allergic to nuts, I requested the one with the QR code, so I could include that additional information. The first one I applied was an utter failure. I followed the instructions, applied it to the recommended location on the inside forearm, and sent him off to gymnastics class (not because he needed it there, but because I thought it would be a good test). The Tat fell off after about 20 minutes of playtime.

Considering Safety Tats are toted to be both waterproof and sweatproof—even recommended for wear at water parks—I decided to give Tat #2 a shot. This time, after cleaning the area with the alcohol swab, I dried my son’s arm completely with a clean towel and applied the Tat to his bicep. Safety Tat #2 lasted four days before I removed it. It held up through Taekwondo classes, playing at a park, running around at a baseball game, and bathing. The print never faded, and the QR code scanned quickly and directed me to the information I had provided when I ordered the product.

Would I purchase Safety Tats myself? To be honest, I wasn’t quite sure at first. While I believe Safety Tats are a wonderful concept, I was not fully convinced they were any better than writing on my child with a Sharpie®. (I know firsthand that Sharpies last a long time on skin and are very hard to wash off!) For the cost ($10.99 for 6 Tats that may or may not stick), I could buy a handful of Sharpies. However, the second tattoo stuck really well and stayed on my son until I was ready to remove it. The print did not smudge or fade, and it was indeed sweatproof and waterproof.  My son said it felt normal, as if he had a bandaid on. I did like the extra information available with the QR code. Not everyone has the technology to read those codes, but several free apps are available for download, and in an emergency, it’s likely someone would be able to access the information.

So, would I purchase Safety Tats? Sure! Along with them, I’d be purchasing a little peace of mind.

Disney World App Review – Fireworks Photography Field Guide

Disney World App Review - Fireworks Photography Field Guide

We have all been there, taking in the awe-inspiring fireworks at the spectacular Disney Parks night shows but can’t seem to get a great picture. Sometimes blurry, or stringy, or just lacking clarity and focus.  Want to fix that no matter what camera you take with you to the parks? This app from PowWows.com is for you!

Available in the app store for only $1.99 you can get this app on iPhone and iPod touch.  It gives you step by step instructions for not only what you need to take great photos but tips on how to achieve them while you are in the Parks! My only regret while reviewing this is that I can not take a few pictures now that I have all these pointers to show you how the guide can be put to use!

The guide takes you through camera gear and settings, and the app also features examples, tips, and composition input. It really is unobtrusive as far as taking up space, runs very smoothly, and should be an essential on your “must-have” Disney World app list! I feel confident that my photography has improved just sitting on my couch going through the options, features, and tips!

Disney Planning & Photos: Do You Have What it Takes to Walk Through The World?

Disney Planning & Photos: Do You Have What it Takes to Walk Through The World?

What’s the number one planning tip I would give to anyone anticipating or planning a Disney trip? You need to start walking way before your feet ever hit Main Street, U.S.A, to run and grab a Fastpass at Space Mountain.

Walt Disney World is comprised of 92 miles of theme parks, resorts, restaurants, shopping, water parks, and mini-golf. Everything is spread out so that even when you take your own car, you’re still going to do a lot of walking. You’ll walk from the Disney bus to the restaurant to your room. You’ll walk from the monorail to the gate. You’ll walk mile after mile just to get to the rides. And on…and on…and on you walk, propelled sometimes only by Pixie Dust and cupcake sugar. If you go in the summer, the Florida heat and humidity can make each step feel like two, especially in direct sun, so you had better start training like you’re going to walk a marathon.

Disney Planning & Photos: Do You Have What it Takes to Walk Through The World?

On my last Disney trip, I did walk a marathon. In fact, I walked the mileage equivalent of over 3 marathons: 110 miles in 11 days. Will you walk that much? Certainly not, but you can average upwards of five to seven miles a day. Are you really ready for that much physical activity on vacation?

About 2 months before you leave, start walking every day. You need to get your kids walking with you if they won’t have the privilege of riding in a stroller. Most children are not accustomed to walking 3-7 miles a day, and while they will not suffer as much as older adults, at least in my experience, all these miles can add up to tired, cranky kids.

Buy some socks with Wicking so you don’t develop blisters.

Drink lots of water if you’re there in the summer, because all that walking and the heat really take it right out of you.

Mouze Kateerz

Disney can be an absolute blast, and you’ll create memories that will last a lifetime. But you will enjoy your trip more if you starting some conditioning now. You can rest when you get back home and unpack, right after the depression sets in.

Vacationing at Disney World with Special Needs: ASD/ADHD

Vacationing at Disney World with Special Needs: ASD/ADHD

Families with special needs children may find the idea of traveling daunting. Vacation planning should be a fun time and something to look forward to, not fear or dread.

As a travel agent, I have been blessed to find families with special needs very open about their unique situation and the dynamic elements required to make a dream vacation.

No amount of reading and researching could ever give me the knowledge even close to what the family knows and lives with every day. It’s a task I don’t even attempt to undertake. I’ve found the best way to plan a vacation for children with special needs is to prepare the parents. No one knows a child better than his parent, and knowledge is power. Combining Disney parks knowledge with parental knowledge and you’ve got the answer to virtually any potential vacation problem.

Parents are often very anxious at the prospect of bringing children with sensory issues to a place like Walt Disney World. It can be crowded, noisy and it’s certainly overstimulating, these things seem like a formula for disaster, but rest assured your vacation can be just as magical as you imagine, you just have to do a little prep work.

Individually, special needs can vary quite broadly and it would be impossible to address each one of them. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders) are broad disorders that can have the following effects: impulsiveness, hyperactivity, inattention, ultra-sensitivity to noises, lights, smells and objects. ASD can also include: impairments in thinking, feeling, language and social interactions repetitive movements, abnormal reactions to sound, touch and extreme emotional responses.

Regardless of what your family needs are every family will experience certain standard things on vacation: eat, sleep and play. So let’s combine what we know about special needs and standard vacation elements.

Eat: You have to eat and if you are in the parks you are most likely eating in the parks, which could raise a whole new set of challenges.

Make Advanced Dining Reservations at “off” dining times. Even with a reservation you could still have to wait for your table to become available, eating at an “off” time will be less crowded and will be less sensory overload. You’re also more likely to be seated quickly.

Pick your place – When you make your dining reservations make notes of your special needs, if your child has issues with being touched, request a booth (if available) you are less likely to be bumped or touched by strangers. If sitting with strangers is a problem for your child, be cautious of places like Biergarten in Epcot, The Spirit of Aloha show, or Hoop-Dee-Doo Review, if you are interested in these experiences ask the dining reservation-ist if you can have a separate table. Disney does try to accommodate special requests, of course nothing is guaranteed; but explaining there is a medical issue will help.

Sleep: Being on property could be the best decision you could make. Consider your resort wisely, if you prefer quieter calmer environments consider a moderate or deluxe resort in a room that’s in a more secluded location (not facing the pool, etc). These rooms are more likely to be affordable, available and apt to fit your special needs. View pictures of your choice resort online, familiarize your child with what the rooms will look like, etc.

Consider your transportation options
when choosing your resort. If your child won’t be able to handle a bus ride consider a deluxe resort on the monorail system or with water access.

Play: This could be the most difficult vacation element because the variables are endless. There are a few preparations you can make to prepare for your park time. For children with ASD and ADHD structure is very important.

Although you are on vacation and might not want to stick to a stringent schedule set a pattern of park touring that works for you follow it daily, regardless of what park you are in. For example, set breakfast for the same time each morning, try to accomplish a certain amount of rides before your mid-morning break, and a certain amount after, set lunch at the same time each day, etc and decide what you’re going to do after dinner. Although the daily experiences will change your pattern will be the same.

Before you start touring the park, stop in guest services and get a Guest Assistance Card. This card will be issued to someone in the party and is valid for 5 people in the party (for example, a single family would most likely only need 1 pass if everyone is touring the parks together). Explain to the cast member at guest services you’d like a GAC, and what your special need is (an alternate entrance, a quiet place to wait for your turn on the ride, etc.) and they will accommodate you. It’s not necessary to parade your child into guest services and put on a display of what you need and why. One member of the family can obtain the card and you simply show the pass at the attraction and the cast member will give you instructions from there.

Give your children maps of the parks and let them get familiar with them. Some children find that knowing where they are going is empowering and they’re less likely to have a meltdown. Order the planning DVD and watch it, as many times as it takes to work out the kinks and questions that your child might have about your vacation.

Share your plans if you think your child can handle it (we’re going to have breakfast then try to do rides in Fantasyland, then after lunch we’re going to try to rides in Frontierland, etc.). This will give more structure and having a set pattern may help keep the stimulation under control and ease anxiety.

Your vacation should be a magical experience from start to finish, including planning. If you find the process overwhelming or would like assistance, find a reputable travel agent that specializes in Disney travel, like Pixie Vacations. An experienced agent will be able to assist you with reservations, touring plans, itineraries, and take the planning and preparation pressure off of you. Have fun at the happiest place on earth!
