Traveling with Infants to Walt Disney World

Traveling with Infants to Walt Disney WorldThis morning my 3 year old asked to go to “Dinny World” again.  Being 17 weeks pregnant now, we won’t be going as a family for a while.  But, the next time we do go we’ll have an infant in tow!  Thinking about this “next trip” made me consider how different a trip with an infant will be.  Here are a few “tips” and things to consider when traveling with infants.

My first tip is be flexible!  Traveling with an infant will require the entire family to be flexible.  If you miss an ADR (Advanced Dining Reservation), need to go back to the resort or if your baby is too fussy, don’t stress!  Just be prepared to roll with the punches.

Second, be familiar with the Baby Care Centers at all of the parks.  This is a special place where parents can spend time with their baby to breastfeed, rock, change diapers and rest.  If you are traveling with younger kids too, they have activities for toddlers and preschool age children too.  TVs show Disney cartoons and Disney Junior shows throughout the day.  Toys, child size chairs and puzzles are there to keep kids occupied.  If you forget any of your baby supplies in the resort or at home, there is a small “gift shop” here to purchase last minute supplies: formula, diapers, wipes, snacks, etc.

Third, utilize the Rider Switch program at WDW.  This can be used on rides your infant is too small to ride on but your other children (if you have them) are tall enough to ride.  Tell the cast member at the entrance to the attraction that you want to use the rider switch option.  One parent will stay outside with the baby while the other parent rides alone or with your other children.  When the first parent exits the attraction, you “swap” the baby and the second parent has a chance to ride.  Bonus for the other kids in your party since they will be able to ride with both parents!

Forth, I suggest bringing your own stroller from home.  Your baby will be familiar with it, you won’t have to spend money renting a stroller each day (which aren’t good for infants anyway) and you’ll have your stroller to use outside the 4 parks.  You can stash all the extra “stuff” your infant needs in the basket underneath!  If you like to “wear” your baby, don’t forget to stash that under your stroller as well.

Remember, if you stay on Walt Disney World property, you can use their pack n play beds for you infant instead of bringing one from home!

Dine on Disney Desserts at the Tomorrowland Terrace Dessert Party

Dine on Disney Desserts at the Tomorrowland Terrace Dessert Party

On our trips to WDW we try to do something new each time that we haven’t done before. This past trip I thought it would be fun to try out the Tomorrowland Terrace Dessert Party!! Desserts, prime viewing of the fireworks and Disney…what could be better right ?!

I called and checked on getting reservations about 1 month before our travel dates. You can contact me and I would be glad to assist you with reservations. I do recommend that you book at least a few weeks in advance because seating is limited and during the busy months it tends to fill up fast. The price per child $15.97 and price per adult $29.81.

It is suggested that you check in 1 hour before Wishes starts. You will make your way to the Noodle Station and there is a podium set up where you will receive a wristband for each member of your party. When you get your wristband you are guided to your table where there is a place card with your last name and party size on it.

If you are unfortunate to be seated at the back of the terrace *as we were* you can stand at the railing to watch Wishes. You are not allowed to bring a chair to the railing though.

The buffet of desserts was very overwhelming!! We ate an early supper just so we could enjoy the desserts we knew that we would be enjoying later that night. It was rather late when we had our party *9:15pm* but our food had time to settle.

They had fresh strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, watermelon and grapes for those who were looking for a healthy alternative. Then you had cannolis, fruit tarts, mini key lime tarts, rice krispy treats and much more for those who are wanting to live it up!

We discovered a shot glass size glass that had some sort of orange creamsicle type concoction in it…That was the BEST! The drinks of the night were water, lemonade *very tart I might add*,milk and coffee.

I personally was not impressed with the view from the terrace during the fireworks. It is not a straight view of the castle so the castle is not in front of you when the fireworks are lighting up the nighttime sky.And if you are seated in the back of the area the overhang is too low that you can’t sit in your seat.So standing at the railing is the best option. The cool thing to my 7 yr old daughter was that Tinkerbell flies right over your head.

If you are looking for something off the beaten path to do or you have something special to celebrate while on your trip to Disney World this is a wonderful way to celebrate!

Disney Takes Animal Kingdom to Facebook With Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers

Disney Takes Animal Kingdom to Facebook With Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers

Disney Interactive today announced Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers, a social game inspired by The Walt Disney Company’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, is now live on Facebook. Developed by Disney Social Games, Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers is a hidden object game that provides players with a social, ecologically minded play experience.

“Animal lovers will flock to Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers to build their personal nature preserves around the iconic Tree of Life,” said John Spinale, Senior Vice President of Social Games, Disney Interactive. “As we continue to bring the magic of Disney to social gaming, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park offers the perfect backdrop to build the most beautiful hidden object game on Facebook.”

In Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers, players become part of the Global Wildlife Research team, an international organization of conservationists, environmentalists and naturalists. Appealing to a broad base of consumers who have an affinity for animals, nature and exploratory travel, Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers brings players into the heart of the jungle without having to leave home. Players can create and nurture their own wildlife preserve and search for hidden objects in spectacular natural settings from the Rocky Mountains, to the Amazon Rainforest, to the Australian Outback. Two of the game’s locations will be particularly familiar to Disney fans, as Harambe and Anandapur draw inspiration directly from Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

Continuing to build on Playdom’s success in the hidden object genre, Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers incorporates a deeper game narrative and ecologically-minded game play. Players are encouraged to be conscious of the needs of animals and their habitats: placing animals who cohabitate well next to each other will earn the player extra points.

In the coming months, Disney Animal Kingdom Explorers will continue to expand with ongoing content releases. Players can look forward to new exotic locations, quests, and more animals.

Your quest awaits! Social gamers, animal enthusiasts and Disney fans alike can begin the adventure now. Visit http://www.facebook.com/disneyanimalkingdom .

SAVE money by renting a house at Walt Disney World

SAVE money by renting a house at Walt Disney World

In my family we have four people. Two of them are under ten and don’t take up that much room. They’re past the age where they need five-hundred supplies just to survive, so as long as I stick to my PERFECT PACKING LIST our family unit meets the requirements to stay in just about any room at Walt Disney World. However, I always seem to feel crowded in my resort room!!

If I had baby #3 (which is NOT in the plan for me by the way) that means my options would become much more limited. You see, once you hit Five in your party your resort room possibilities are fewer, and usually end in you dropping SIGNIFICANTLY more money to stay “on-property” in places like the new Art of Animation Suites, Deluxe Villa, or a Cabin at Fort Wilderness. As blended families have become more common, this becomes an issue for parents and step-parents who want to bring ALL of the children to Disney at one time inexpensively. And even more commonly we bring grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, family friends on our trips. Which requires many more rooms. More rooms = more money.

Have you considered renting a house off property?

What I have learned is that at WDW what you don’t pay for in money, you pay for in time. So the more convenient something is the more it is likely to be expensive (the resorts on the monorail are a prime example). However, as long as you plan ahead being off property is not that bad. If a house is 9 miles away from Animal Kingdom Parking lot (which you can determine by using Google maps) once you add in the tram-ride from the parking lot you’re pretty close to the same amount of time (15-20 minutes) you would spend riding a bus from All Star Music Resort to that park (THAT’S ASSUMING YOU CATCH THE FIRST BUS!).

The second week in March I rented “Disney Villa” from Disney Sunshine Villas. We were bringing two families with us for a grand total of 6 adults and 5 children. So we rented a 6 bedroom, four bath house with a pool and a hot tub. During the time of the year we rented (mid – March) the house cost us $1,1195.00 (including taxes). You can check the price for the house when you might want to go by clicking HERE. So if you divide that by 3 families then each family would only pay $398.00!! You wont find anything on property for that! They do have smaller houses if you’re not needing that much space.

The house sleeps 15 people, and has two master suites (a king-size, and a queen-size), another queen size bedroom (with a bathroom across the hall), and three bedrooms with two twin beds a piece (which share a bathroom). The living room has three leather sofas, a 52″ television, a dining room that will seat eight people. It also has an air-conditioned game room with a pool table, sofa and tv, lets not forget the laundry room which saves on packing!

IMG_3526

If we would have stayed at a Moderate resort , like Port Orleans- Riverside, it would run just my family $1,651.00 before we got a single park ticket or eat any food. That’s 1,253.00 MORE than what we actually paid to stay a week and $532.00 more than the whole 6 bedroom house for the week!!!

We loved the house. It really felt like home for us and when we went home for our mid-day break the kids loved swimming in their own heated pool and the adults loved soaking their tired legs at night in the hot tub.

We cooked many meals and even grilled out one night which saved us a A LOT of money on meals. The owner is so nice and really willing to accommodate any need or request you might have. He and his parents, who help tend to the house, both came around to check in on us while we were there. We also had a request and they went out of their way to fix it and fix it quickly. They actually own multiple houses in that same neighborhood so if you needed more people together for a family reunion they could still have you all very close together. They were great and I’m happy to recommend them to you.

If you are interested in potentially renting Disney Villa or another villa from them please contact their owner Lee by going HERE and PLEASE always tell him that Disney Diva from Chip and Co sent you!!! He might just cut you a deal Smile

Disney World Planning – Family Meeting Nights

Disney World Planning - Family Meeting Nights

Hey folks! Thanks for keeping up with my Disney World Planning Series as I plan my September family vacation to Walt Disney World! If you missed the other articles in this series you can check them out here.

I am now  172 days away from my vacation. This means that we have selected the restaurants we wish to eat at and made our dining reservations. Guests are able to make your dining reservations 180 days before your arrival and it is highly recommended that you do so. Check out Chip’s Post on 100 Disney Foods to Eat Before you Die.

There are over 100 dining locations at Disney world and picking which ones you will dine at can be a daunting task. This is why our family has a meeting to discuss our choices. My husband enjoys our trips, but he’s not a super fan as I am. He used to get sick of my non stop Disney talk so our solution was to have a few pre determined Disney planning nights where I could gush and talk Disney all night long.

Our first meeting for our September trip was to determine our dining choices and our must dos. Leading up to family planning night I make sure I have the park hours and dining menus available. Since I know the park hours and have already determined where we will be each night we can plan our dining choices accordingly.

During a family planning night it is important that everyone gets to voice their opinions. It is not just my vacation and I have to be careful to listen to the wants of everyone in my group!

Quick Tip: it is extra fun to have a Disney themed meal on a planning night! I use Disney themed place settings to add to the fun!

This trip will include our son who will be 16 months, my sister and brother in law, my mom, my husband and Me. We determined that since it is my sons first trip, this will be a trip of firsts! Too often we get stuck in a rut of doing the same things over and over. Each individual in our group picked a place to eat they had always wanted to try and never had! We ended up with some great reservations including Le Cellier, Citricos, Boma, Tusker House, Liberty Tree Tavern, and Cape May Cafe. By including everyone in the decision making we are each able to look forward to trying something new!

The next thing we did is we each submitted 2-3 must do’s.

Here they are:

Me: Splash, Kali River, Rock n Rollercoaster

Husband: Everest, Big Thunder Mountain

Sister: kilimanjaro safari, barnstormer

Brother in law: mission space

Mom: Living with the Land, Small World

Baby: Dumbo, Pooh

Quick Tip: make sure you force yourself to try a few new things during your trip! You’ll be surprised how quickly your list of favorites grows as you try new rides or attractions.

These choices become our master list of must do attractions. With this list I can do something super cool using the Lines app on my iPad. Lines is developed by the creators of Touring Plans and is my favorite planning tool. On the app they not only supply you with pre made touring plans, but you can design your own as well! Simply plug in the attractions you wish to see and it will generate a touring plan just for you!  The only feature I wish it had is a place to plug in your dining reservations so it would know when and how long your breaks would be. There is an optimize feature so when you do break you can refresh your plan. I am creating our plans right now!

How do you plan what attractions you will visit? Have any tips you’d like to share?

Peter Parker and Miles Morales Will Meet in the Crossover ‘Spider-Men’

Peter Parker and Miles Morales Will Meet in the Crossover 'Spider-Men'

Now this is something I’m very excited about! Marvel has officially confirmed and announced today that Peter Parker, of the original Marvel universe, and Miles Morales, our new Ultimate Spider-Man, will be meeting in a five part crossover event, ‘Spider-Men’, that starts this June. It’ll be the first time the original Marvel universe will crossover into the Ultimate universe, and I’m very interested to see how this plays out. Brian Michael Bendis has been one of my favorite comic writers for quite some time, and his Ultimate Spider-Man series is one of the best comic series I’ve ever read. Him doing an event of this magnitude has me very excited. June can’t get here soon enough. Hit the jump for the full press release, and let me know in the comments below, are you excited about this crossover?

Spider-Man Meets Spider-Man In Landmark SPIDER-MEN

Peter Parker and Miles Morales Meet For The First Time in June

New York, NY—April 11, 2012—This June, it’s time for Peter Parker, better known as the Amazing Spider-Man, to cross worlds and meet Miles Morales…the all-new Spider-Man? Marvel is proud to announce Spider-Men, an all-new five issue landmark story from award-winning author Brian Michael Bendis (Avengers VS. X-MenUltimate Comics Spider-Man), red-hot artist Sara Pichelli (Ultimate Comics Spider-Man) and acclaimed cover artist Jim Cheung (Avengers VS. X-Men), which brings Peter Parker and Miles Morales together for the first time. That’s right, the Spider-Man from two different realities—the Marvel Universe and Ultimate Comics Universe—bring their worlds together for a battle no one web-head could win!

When Spider-Man tracks down one of his deadliest villains, he suddenly finds himself thrust into another world where Peter Parker is dead…and there’s a new Spider-Man in town. As these two heroes learn the truth about their identities and their universes, they’ll embark on a journey that’ll leave them forever changed—and reveal a startling truth about a key player in the Spider-Man mythos!

“This year is the 50th anniversary of Spider-Man and we’re so happy that the stars aligned for us to tell a Spider-Man story that nobody has ever seen before,” said Bendis. “It’s an honor and a privilege to present both this story and these characters to fans on such an auspicious occasion. The work Sara has done on Spider-Men is a step above the already high standard that she has set for herself on our Ultimate Comics Spider-Man series. For me, this is a celebration of the best character in mainstream comics and some of the best art mainstream comics has to offer.”

Each issue of Spider-Men features variants covers by some of the biggest names in comics including Humberto Ramos  (Amazing Spider-Man), Mike Deodato (New Avengers), Marcos Martin (Amazing Spider-Man), Terry Dodson (Avenging Spider-Man), Travis Charest (Captain America) and Sara Pichelli.

“Knowing how much Brian loves and respects Spider-Man, there’s no way I wouldn’t want to work on Spider-Men with him,” said Sara Pichelli. “It’s going to be an explosive celebration of Spider-Man’s 50th anniversary—are you ready?”

In 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, the world first met Peter Parker and saw him become the hero Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe. Soon after, Spider-Man became a pop culture sensation, launching multiple television series, blockbuster films and some of the most popular comics of all time. Then in 2011, Marvel introduced Miles Morales, a new character of African American and Hispanic descent, who became Spider-Man in the Ultimate Comics Universe after that world’s Peter Parker perished.

“This is one of the biggest stories in Marvel history,” said Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief, Marvel Entertainment. “Peter Parker and Miles Morales are two of our most popular characters and fans have been clamoring for them to meet—we’ve got quite a few surprises in store for both characters. This is only the beginning of how we’re celebrating Spider-Man’s spectacular 50th Anniversary.”

This June, swing into action with world’s most amazing super heroes in Spider-Men #1.
