As a warrior lost on Earth, John Carter is magically transported to Mars, where the fate of the planet and its people ultimately rest in his hands. With surprising new powers, and epic battles, he rises to become the man he is meant to be and the hero he trulyis.

From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton (Best Animated Film, WALL•E, 2008) “John Carter” is a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). John Carter is a war-weary, former military captain who’s inexplicably transported to Mars and reluctantly becomes embroiled in an epic conflict. Stunning special effects, great characters and villains — and complete with extraordinary bonus features — “John Carter” is a heroic and inspirational adventure that will thrill audiences beyond imagination.

This ambitious and unforgettable screen adaptation of the classic novel “A Princess of Mars” by Edgar Rice Burroughs, stars heartthrob Taylor Kitsch (“Friday Night Lights,” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) in the title role, Lynn Collins (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” “The Number 23”) as Dejah Thoris, Willem Dafoe (“The English Patient,” “Spider Man”) as Tars Tarkas, and Dominic West (“300,” “The Wire”) as Sab Than. It’s Raining…Not Pouring! Making the Most of the Parks in the Rain!

It's Raining...Not Pouring! Making the Most of the Parks in the Rain!

Have you ever been in the parks when a massive down pour happens. Ponchos get whipped out, strollers are scooted to the sidelines, and the awnings attract humans like moths to a flame. I’ve been there and chances are if you haven’t you will be! Just when you think your fun is over (well, at least until the rain stops) I am here to tell you that you have options! Let’s take a look at a few things that are sure to turn that rain into a rainbow:

Head for cover: the obvious choice here is to head to an indoor attraction. Sometimes that is hard. I suggest taking a moment to find these spots on a map (you can get a free customized map from Disney’s official site). The Magic Kingdom offers a lot of indoor rides and shows. I have found the Main Street Train Station to be the perfect spot to take cover. Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios have a few more choices where you can do more than just wait until the rain stops.

Here are some of my other suggestions:

  • Epcot: Innoventions, Club Cool, the Seas, or the Land Pavilion
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios: Art of Animation
  • Animal Kingdom: Conservation Station

Come prepared: I always pack a rain jacket or a disposible poncho in my park bag. Not only does this come in handy because it is so accessible in the event of rain but, it also helps to save you money! Another part of being prepared is looking at the daily forecast. While the summer months almost always gaurentee a shower you never really know. I always watch the morning forcast or check my phone before heading out to the parks. Sometimes this determines my park choice ( for example I would go to Epcot on a rainy day since there are so many interactive indoor choices).

Brave it:If it is just raining, I say brave it! I put on my poncho with pride and head to the next ride. I’ve found that most of the rides/attractions stay open and lines are much shorter! By all means, take cover if there is lightning or thunder! Safety first! But, if it is simply raining…make the most of a damp situation!

Next time it rains, don’t let it put a damper on your park fun!

Disney Store Celebrates Grand Opening of Newly-Designed Store in Glendale, CA on World Wish Day and Donates Portion of Sales to Make-A-Wish

Disney Store Celebrates Grand Opening of Newly-Designed Store in Glendale, CA on World Wish Day and Donates Portion of Sales to Make-A-Wish

On Sunday April 29, Disney Store will celebrate the grand opening of its newly-redesigned store at Glendale Galleria, in Glendale, Calif., the location of the very first Disney Store. In 1987, Disney launched the concept known as entertainment retail, and today Disney Store is celebrating its 25th anniversary and thriving as an innovative specialty retailer. The grand opening of the remodeled Glendale Galleria location will take place on World Wish Day, a celebration of the day that sparked a global wish-granting movement by Make-A-Wish. In honor of World Wish Day, Disney Store will host two wish kids and their families and provide a magical shopping experience at the Glendale store, and donate 10 percent of its sales on opening day. At the celebration, the first 500 guests to visit the store will receive free Mickey Mouse ears. From noon to 4 p.m., a meet and greet with the characters Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, Belle and the Beast* will take place in the mall’s center court.

To celebrate World Wish Day nationwide, Disney Store will donate 5 percent of the gross sales revenue it receives that day from store locations in North America (up to $50,000). A special Jiminy Cricket Vinylmation™ figure avaiable at Disney Store locations nationwide and on DisneyStore.com will be released on World Wish Day, and for each one sold (from April 29 — May 31, 2012), Disney Store will donate $1 (up to $15,000) to Make-A-Wish America. To support Make-A-Wish locally, Disney Store will donate $250 to each chapter in the U.S. and Canada, for a total of $17,500, to assist with local wishes throughout the year.

“We admire the outstanding work of Make-A-Wish and are proud to celebrate with two wish kids at the grand opening celebration at our very first store in Glendale, CA,” said Jim Fielding, president of Disney Store and Make-A-Wish International board member. “Disney Store’s mission is to create magical experiences for families every day and we are honored to be a destination where Make-A-Wish children and families can enjoy special time together.”

The Make-A-Wish children will “unlock imagination” with a beautiful oversized lock and key and officially open the Disney Store at 11 a.m. on April 29. Disney Store’s signature opening ceremony will take place every day thereafter and one lucky child will be invited to participate.

Disney Store’s new design aims to deliver “the best 30 minutes of a child’s day” through immersive experiences, including a Disney Princess castle with a magic mirror, translucent magical trees, Disney·Pixar CARS neighborhood, and the Disney Store Theatre, featuring the latest in Disney entertainment. As guests look above in the store, they will see a unique skyline with iconic Disney storytelling scenes. The interactive design features magical experiences for Disney fans of all ages to enjoy. Since launching its new design in 2010, Disney Store has been transforming its stores into awe-inspiring retail destinations to the delight of guests around the world.

Time-Lapse Video of Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

We’re nearly one month away from the opening of Phase I of Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, which will include the “Finding Nemo” wing, Landscape of Flavors food court, Ink & Paint Shop merchandise location and other common guest areas.

The “Finding Nemo” wing will feature large character installations of Crush, Marlin, Nemo, and Mr. Ray, among others, as well as the largest pool ever built at a Disney resort.

Here’s an exclusive time-lapse video from our friends at Walt Disney Imagineering that shows all the progress that has been made so far.

The resort’s remaining wings will open later this year, with “Cars” opening June 18, “The Lion King” on Aug. 10 and “The Little Mermaid” on Sept. 15.

Don’t miss this Top Disney World Attraction!

Don't miss this Top Disney World Attraction!

What is this top Disney World Attraction you might ask?

Well here are some clues…

This top attraction at Walt Disney World is often overlooked. It goes a whopping 13.5 mph and operates rain or shine. The queue moves faster than most other attractions and you’re often greeted by a cast member who is entertaining as well as concerned with your “Safe-D”.

You can find it not only at the Magic Kingdom, but EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

No it’s not The Jungle Cruise..Why its the Disney World Trams!

Don't miss this Top Disney World Attraction!

Look at those smiling faces. They look like they’re having a blast don’t they? That’s because they are!
As we park our car and board the Courtesy Tram at Walt Disney World, excitement mounts second by second.

You will see almost majestic colorful poles to stand behind and wait safely for a tram to arrive and carry you toward your destination. In our case, the Transportation and Ticket Center which will lead us to the Magic Kingdom for a day of fun.

Walt Disney World trams are not like any other courtesy trams you will have experienced. The cast member on the back of the tram will instruct you to make sure your little ones are sitting in the middle. We don’t want any little ones pitched overboard by the fantastic ride to our destination. Hold on tight to your belongings, things can get a little tricky, especially if you’re in the villains lot. You never know when Cruella might need to return to her parked car. That’s right, she has her own parking lot. You might just be lucky enough to park there.

The cast member on the back of the tram can be a wealth of information. On your journey to the park entrance, or in my case the Transportation and Ticket Center, this person will fill you in on all the happenings of the day — what time is the parade, the fireworks and how long the tram will run after the park closes.

One very important thing the cast member will say to you is the lot and row you have parked in. After a long day of playing, I mean touring, if you forget where you’ve parked, panic may set in. Never fear, if you can slightly remember what time you arrived, Disney Security can help you find your long lost car. However, to avoid this panic, the cast member on the tram will tell you that you parked in Aladdin row 36. It would be a good idea to tell your very mindful daughter, who loves to remember numbers, where you have parked. She will not forget. You, on the other hand, will forget almost instantly. That’s why you tell the daughter. She will know and she will save the day!

After boarding the tram, little ones away from the doors and to the middle, strollers emptied and folded, if you’re sprinkled with some pixie dust to sit in the back, make conversation with the cast member. Try to do this when they’re not on the microphone telling everyone which row you’re parked in,  because that is some very important information.

We have had some pretty amazing conversations with cast members who do the tram spiels. They’re by far overlooked by most guests. Give it a try next time. You might be surprised.

We’ve waited at the poles, boarded in a safely manner, spoke to the cast member and had an interesting conversation, and guess what? We’re at our destination! Topping out at no more than 13.5 mph, the hill going into the Transportation and Ticket Center was a blast, one of the fastest rides in the Magic Kingdom and that’s how we start our Magical day. Disembark and purchase your tickets if you haven’t already. Then choose your pathway — ferry or monorail. You can return, exhausted after memory-making filled day, and ride this attraction transportation to your parking area. You’ve returned within an hour and half of park closing because you did remember the cast member telling you that the tram will operate that long after the park closes. You will remember where you’ve parked because the awesome cast member reminded you to tell your amazing daughter.

Which Disney World Guide Is Right For You?

Which Disney World Guide Is Right For You?

The Walt Disney World Resort is huge, and it can be a complicated destination to navigate. The properties boast four theme parks, two water parks, more than two dozen hotels, a campground, a shopping district and more than 200 dining locations. It can all be a little overwhelming to returning visitors, let alone first timers. That’s why planning your Disney vacation is so important, and why Disney World guidebooks are so popular.

But with all the options available, which guide is right for you? I’m going to look at three of the most popular to demonstrate the differences and hopefully help you decide which fits your experience level and travel style.

The Unofficial Guide To Walt Disney World by Bob Sehlinger and Len Testa is huge, detailed and brutally honest. The Unofficial Guide’s 2012 version features 854 pages of text, charts and drawings, but no pictures. There is a companion volume of pictures available, but the Unofficial Guide itself is photo-free, rather devoting all its space to information.

If you like charts, this is the guide for you. Want to know how long it takes to get from any resort, using any transportation option to the front gate of any park, down to the second? There’s a chart. Which rides are scary for what age child? There’s a chart. Room rates, sizes and amenities? Ticket options? Average cost of a day at Disney? Ratings of rental car companies? This book has a chart for just about everything. The authors use a team of researchers and feedback from hundreds of readers to give you a very balanced and often brutally honest look at what exactly lies in store for a family vacationing at Disney World. They look at options both inside Disney World and off-property, offering valuable insight.

This is a very informative book, and surprisingly entertaining to read, given the density of information. The quotes from readers peppered throughout the book often left me in stitches. The downside is the sheer mammoth size, which is a bit intimidating, and the tendency of the authors to look at a Disney vacation as an exercise in mathematics and cost-savings that could turn off many people that aren’t exactly Type A personalities.

On the other end of the spectrum, we find Birnbaum Guides’ Walt Disney World 2012, the Official guide to Walt Disney World. This book is less than 300 pages of much bigger type and features many photographs from all over the Walt Disney world property. Being the Official Guide, this is written with the cooperation, and approval, of the Walt Disney World Resort. It is very up to date and includes all the basic information on accommodations, dining and the parks.

The flip side of that is that you will not get one word of criticism. Disney World is a truly magical place, but it has its ups and downs like the rest of the world. Birnbaum is all ups and no downs. Honestly, while this book is fun to page through and get your family all excited about your trip, it doesn’t have any information not easily available on the Disney website, and much less than is available on fan sites all over the internet, including Chip & Company.

PassPorter’s Walt Disney World is a third option and is quite a departure from both the Official and Unofficial guides. The PassPorter guide offers more pictures and color than the Unofficial Guide, more honest reviews than the Official Guide and is unique in that it also serves as a travel planner and scrapbook.

The authors, Jennifer, Dave and Allison Marx, don’t provide the depth of detail that marks the Unofficial Guide, and aren’t nearly as addicted to charts and graphs, but they do a very good job of honestly portraying Disney World’s best and not so great. The back of the book is composed of cardboard stock pages designed with pockets to hold tickets and other memorabilia and forms for recording both plans and remembrances.

I used this book as a planning guide on our last week-long trip a few years ago without taking advantage of the scrapbook-type features and felt I completely got my money’s worth. This year, I plan to use the whole book as a way to make writing about my trip easier on my return.

No one guide is going to be right for everyone. Whether you are looking to plan every second of your vacation like the D-Day invasion or you just want pretty pictures to help you feel the magic before you leave, there is a guide for you. Or, of course, you can do like me and buy them all! One never can have too much Disney on the bookshelf, I think.

This guest post was written by our good friend Jeffrey. He is a father, husband, Disney fan and refugee from the real world. While planning his next Disney trip, he enjoys bringing the Magic into his life in all ways possible, including his personal blog, Pooh Sticks.
