Disney to Adapt Neil Gaiman’s ‘Graveyard Book’

Disney to Adapt Neil Gaiman's 'Graveyard Book'

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has picked up Neil Gaiman’s award winning novel Graveyard Book.  Gaiman is probably best known outside of comic book circles for his book Coraline which was also turned into a film. Attached to direct is Henry Selick who not only directed Coraline but also Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. Producing the project is Gil Netter who has worked on other literary adaptations like Marley & Me and Water for Elepahants.

Reportedly inspired by The Jungle Book, Graveyard Book centers around  a boy name Nobody “Bod” Owens. He is raised in a graveyard by ghosts and other creatures after his family is murdered. As a teen he must confront he family’s murderer , a being called “the Man Jack.”  I am intrigued by not only the story but also by Selick being attached to direct.

Rope Drop: Love it or Leave it?

Rope Drop: Love it or Leave it?

There are two groups of Disney World guests; those who hit the ground running from park opening to park close and those who wake up when they want to and leave the parks when they are ready. I want to use every minute of my vacation but, I also like sleep. I think I sit on the fence of the two groups. I will say that using Extra Magic Hours and waking up early have their advantages. First, you are squeezing out every minute of your stay! Second, because you are in the most magical place EVER. If you have been in the “sleep in” group then you might have missed out on something truly magical…rope drop ceremonies. While every park (but Epcot) has a rope drop, my favorite is at the Magic Kingdom.

The rope drop at the Magic Kingdom is a beginning of the magic for each day. Guests gather 15-20 minutes before the park opens to be greeted by the Citizens of Main Street USA. The Mayor ushers in singing and dancing citizens and eventually a train load of characters, including the mouse himself! A lucky family rides in on the train and opens the parks for the day with magical pixie dust and all!

Rope Drop: Love it or Leave it?

So, now that you know what this rope drop is all about, let’s take a look at some pros and cons as you weigh your choice to love it or leave it!

pro: Early birds get the worm! This is true! If you are early, you not only take full advantage of the parks for the day but, you also get other benefits. One of the best benefits is lure of the characters who make their way directly from the train into the parks. Lines form quickly but, if you make a run for it, you can manage to meet and greet lots of characters quickly!

Con:There are a lot of people who either made it out early for the rope drop or because they belong to that first, “sun up, sun down” group. Either way, you might find a morning rush of guests and a bit of a crowd.

pro:After the crowds disperse, you pretty much have the park for the taking. I don’t waste my time at the standard “short wait” stand-by lines. Instead, I head for the big ticket rides like Space Mountain and Splash Mountain.

Con:It is stinkin’ early. Maybe too early. Coffee helps here

pro: It is a great way to get you in a magical mood. I love the cheery songs and dancing that the Magic Kingdom rope drop provide. On mornings like those, I can learn to be a morning person.

Cons:Those songs have an uncanny ability to get stuck in your head. Like all day. Again, coffee is strongly suggested.

Maybe this swayed your choice. Maybe you’ll give the Magic Kingdom rope drop a try next time you are in the parks! Don’t hit the snooze on this daily celebration!

Planning some down time with your kids? Use the Resort Playgrounds!

You’ve heard it suggested before; “Plan some down time away from the parks.”  Often, a break in your day is suggested by visiting your resort pool or taking a nap.  Or if you’re taking an entire day off from the parks, you may be planning on a monorail ride, a meal at another resort, some shopping at Downtown Disney or trying out other free things to do.  But have you ever let your kids play on the resort playground?  They’re almost always empty!  This is a great way to let your kids run off some steam, while you sit nearby and watch peacefully.  Think about it, you may have just pushed them in a stroller for an entire day, and they barely did any walking themselves!  Turn that scenario around!  Let them run around on a playground, while you do the sitting!

On our most recent trip to Walt Disney World, we had two “non-park” days.  The first thing we did after eating breakfast was head to a playground!  We stayed at the Yacht Club which doesn’t have a playground of its own anymore, so we walked over to the Swan & Dolphin hotels.  They have a nice playground with 2 slides, and it’s all in the sand!  There was only one other child playing while my two kids ran around.  My kids loved this change of scenery.  They weren’t strapped into a stroller, there weren’t any loud noises from nearby attractions, and they didn’t experience visual stimulation overload with a “sea of people” swarming around them.  They loved being outdoors and feeling free!  And I enjoyed it too!

The playgrounds inside the theme parks can be so crowded!  I usually don’t let my kids play on them in fear of “losing one” in the chaotic mix of kids.  The resort playgrounds are quiet, entertaining for kids, and free to use!  From what I’ve heard, the two best resort playgrounds on Disney Property can be found at Coronado Springs Resort and Animal Kingdom Lodge.  Next time you’re in Disney World, check out a Resort Playground with your kids!

New “Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar” to Open Today at Walt Disney World

New “Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar” to Open Today at Walt Disney World

Patina Restaurant Group officially opens Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar at the Walt Disney World Resort Today.  Located in a reproduction of the Medici Palace in the Italy pavilion at Epcot, the new wine cellar is a space that was “discovered” as Tutto Italia was being built. This “unearthed treasure” features 200 Italian wines and a selection of authentic Italian small plates.

“Tutto Gusto offers a refreshing place to relax and sample authentic tastes of Italy during a day at Epcot,” said restaurateur and CEO of Patina Restaurant Group, Nick Valenti. “It is a welcome addition to the popular dining options at the Italy pavilion.”

“We are always looking at ways to keep Epcot fresh and vibrant for our Guests,” said Erin Youngs, vice president of Epcot. “The new Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar and refreshed Tutto Italia are excellent enhancements to World Showcase. Both nicely complement Via Napoli and offer Guests a chance to enjoy the richness of Italian culture as they savor the authentic flavors of Italy.”

Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar offers a variety of delectable small plates, perfect for sharing, to pair with its wines.  Menus feature sections devoted to simple, flavorful piccoli piatti such as bruschetta di Capri, pizze fritte, polenta funghi e taleggio. Artisanal Italian cheeses are on offer in the formaggi section, with everything from soft, creamy La Tur to salty-sweet aged Parmigiano Reggiano. Fresh hand-crafted mozzarella will be made in bufala and fior di latte styles.  Also featured are cured, sliced meats in the affettati section – including prosciutto di Parma, mortadella, sopressata and more. The corkscrew-shaped cavatappi pasta is highlighted in its own section, with different preparations.

Chef Renzo Barcatta grew up in Cavalese, Italy and honed his skills in restaurants in Venice, Milan and Rome. He will prepare authentic dishes with choices sourced across Italy, offering the best of each region. In addition to pairing well with wine, Chef Baracatta’s creations also match nicely with family-friendly agua frescas and other non-alcoholic beverages.

Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar will be unveiled as part of Tutto Italia’s grand re-opening.  The architecture of both properties reflect classical antiquity and symmetry emblematic of the Italian Renaissance period.  Tutto Italia has been completely refurbished along with a new enclosed patio to offer al fresco dining.  Both the restaurant and wine cellar are furnished with authentic design elements directly from Italy: chandeliers, marble and limestone floors, wall hangings and more.

Tutto Gusto Wine Cellar joins Tutto Italia and Via Napoli Pizzeria e Ristorante, also run by Patina Restaurant Group, in the Italy pavilion in Epcot World Showcase at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Mom and Kids both like Doc McStuffins

Mom and Kids both like Doc McStuffins

Disney Junior has a few new shows that have been introduced recently. The latest addition to the line-up is “Doc McStuffins” . It is a cute show that has become a favorite.

Finding entertainment for a small child can be difficult. Sure little ones love songs, bright colors and fun characters. Parents, like me, want to make sure the cartoons they expose their children to are more than just fun though.  This cartoon fits the bill.

“Doc McStuffins” is an animated series featuring a girl that treats and heals all sorts of toys and stuffed animals. This 6-year-old is a “doctor” appealing to 2- to 7-year-olds. Some of her cases have been treating hiccups for a microphone toy, an alligator from a game with a tummy ache, a dancing toy with a broken leg and a bubble making toy that isn’t blowing bubbles.

A parent might find their child taking a break when “The Doc is In!” Parents are finding this a great choice for their children because of the medical element. Sure, this is a little girl pretending to be a doctor to her toys, but it speaks to children. Going to the doctor or hospital can be scary. “Doc McStuffins” helps her toy patients through medical situations especially geared toward their needs. She magically talks to her patients to learn what ails them. Then she treats them. The tips provided by the show also help teach about living a healthy lifestyle and eases the fear children may having about visiting the doctor. The characters, stories and songs make it fun as well as educational. Children watching probably don’t realize they are learning.

The final words about “Doc McStuffins” are I know my 3-year-old enjoys the show because he smiles during the episodes and chants for the show again when it is over! We recommend watching “Doc McStuffins” on the Disney Junior.

Thanks Charity for the article.

Teri Hatcher to Make Directorial Debut and Guest Stars on ABC Family’s Jane By Design

Teri Hatcher to Make Directorial Debut and Guest Stars on ABC Family's Jane By Design

Golden Globe© winner and famous “Housewife” Teri Hatcher has signed a directing and recurring guest star role deal with ABC Family for the original series “Jane By Design.” Hatcher will be playing Jane’s (Erica Dasher) long-lost mother for four episodes to be filmed between mid-May and mid-June, and will make her appearance starting on the June 19th episode. She will make her directorial debut by directing an upcoming episode of “Jane By Design.” “Jane By Design” returns with all-new episodes on Monday, June 5that 9:00 – 10:00 PM ET/PT.

“We are beyond excited to have Teri join the cast of ‘Jane By Design,’ coming off of her incredible run on ‘Desperate Housewives’ and making ABC Family the home of her directorial debut” said Kate Juergens, EVP, Original Programming and Development, ABC Family. “Teri’s talent will bring the perfect blend of depth, comedy and emotion to the greatly anticipated role of Jane’s long-lost mother.”

Hatcher said: “I’m thrilled for the opportunity to direct. So many of the crew and cast of ‘Desperate Housewives’ have been encouraging me to do this for a long time, from Vanessa Williams, James Denton, to the talented camera crew department and producers. Now that I have time, I’m excited to whole heartedly conquer new ventures. ‘Jane By Design’ is charming, with very funny performances. I look forward to working with new and old friends over there and helping them tell stories both in front and behind the camera.”

“Jane By Design” follows Jane Quimby (Dasher), a quirky teen with an eclectic chic fashion sense, who lands a job at a hip fashion house when they mistake her for an adult. Torn between her love of fashion and the need to finish high school, Jane conceals her true age to assist the demanding, but talented creative director Gray Chandler Murray (Andie MacDowell). Jane quickly learns that working for a successful executive in the cutthroat world of fashion is not as glamorous as she once thought. But with help from her best friend, Billy Nutter (Nicholas Roux), Jane tries to keep up appearances as she toggles between two lives and guards her secret. Will Jane’s ruse be a passing fad, or will she be able to fashion a career in the design business?

Teri Hatcher has wrapped her wildly successful eight-season long stint on ABC’s hit series “Desperate Housewives” as single mother Susan Mayer. Her other credits include the television series “Lois and Clark” and feature films “The Big Picture,” “Soapdish,” “Spy Kids,” “Tomorrow Never Dies” and “Coraline.”

“Jane By Design” is executive-produced by Gavin Polone, April Blair and John Ziffren. The series stars Erica Dasher, David Rogers, Nicholas Roux, Rowly Dennis, India De Beaufort, Matthew Atkinson, and featuring Andie MacDowell.

Supercalifragilistic Breakfast at 1900 Park Fare

IMG_2747

If you’re looking for a character meal with maximum food and fun for minimum price let me suggest the Supercalifragilistic Breakfast at 1900 Park Fare in the Grand Floridian.

My daughter and I ate there in February 2012 for the first time and really enjoyed the food as well as the opportunity to meet Mary Poppins, Pooh, Tigger, Alice & the Mad Hatter. Yep, that’s FIVE characters!

Once you check in on the bottom floor of the Grand Floridian Resort at 1900 Park Fare and they take you to a backdrop where you can get your family IMG_2749photograph made while you wait.

The photo is not included in the price of your meal. They bring it around while you’re eating to buy if you want.

Your host then calls your name and takes you into the dining room to be seated. The wait-staff then come and take your drink order and you’re dismissed to the buffet which is AWESOME!IMG_2787

It’s honestly one of my favorite breakfast buffets at Walt Disney World.

And the stars of this delightful treat for the senses?

LOBSTER BENEDICT

and CINNAMON ROLLS IMG_2777

This breakfast was not as crowded as many of the other character breakfasts I’ve been to, so we saw all of the characters twice AND they didn’t rush to get on to the next table. And it was so fun meeting the characters. Especially the Mad Hatter who you RARELY see in the parks.

IMG_2790IMG_2794IMG_2797IMG_2802IMG_2755

We really had a great time and would recommend it to anybody wanting maximum time with characters and one really delicious breakfast!

Oh, one last weird thing. If you bring a stroller they take it when you go inside and put it on the OUTSIDE deck behind the Grand Floridian. So don’t be shocked when your stroller is gone. Just ask the person at the front desk to point you in the right direction or look for the signs.

Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise by TouringPlans author and photographer Tom Bricker

Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise by TouringPlans author and photographer Tom Bricker

Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise is the first TouringPlans eBook, which is a collection of over 200 photos from one single operational day in Disneyland, specifically “One More Disney Day.” Touring Plans author Tom Bricker captured all of the photos in the eBook as he ran around Disneyland during the course of that morning, day, night, and morning (again). He was one of the crazy Disneyland guests in the park on “One More Disney Day” from start to the very finish, and he snapped hundreds of photos along the way to document the day.

If you’re not a regular reader of the TouringPlans Blog, you may recognize his photography from the Unofficial Guide: Color Companion to Walt Disney WorldDisneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise by TouringPlans author and photographer Tom BrickerPopular Photography Magazine, or his daily Disney photos. As Chief Photographer for TouringPlans, he is also responsible for the photos at the top of each page of the Touring Plans website and the attraction photo galleries, among other things. Not to mention you can see some his photos here on the all new C&C Picture site!

Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise highlights some of Tom’s favorite photos that he captured on that single operational day in Disneyland and presents them to you in one attractive eBook. Throughout the book he has also presented some of his favorite little tidbits of trivia, such as the inspiration for the original Tomorrowland Moonliner and why Snow White was ultimately added to Snow White’s Scary Adventures attraction in Fantasyland. If you’re a fan of the Disney theme parks, I think you’ll enjoy this fresh and beautiful look at one day in Disneyland.

We’re pretty excited about this first TouringPlans eBook. The whole Touring Plans team has put a lot of work into it, and we think you’ll really enjoy it!

As an added bonus for Chip and Co fans we are offering a special discount code to use to get 25% off the $8 price of the eBook! Just use code SUNRISE2012 at check out.
