Magical Last Minute Advanced Dining Reservations

Magical Last Minute Advanced Dining Reservations

Advanced Dining Reservations (ADR) open 180 days before you arrive, but if you’ve booked a last minute Disney World trip you might be nervous. Others visiting during the same time had a head start making reservations. Keep in mind you don’t need a dining plan to enjoy dining at Disney World. Nevertheless, if staying on site it is a money saving option.

Be flexible when scheduling meals. You might be dreaming of breakfast with characters, but you could still have a meal with characters for lunch or dinner. It might be you want to make a reservation for a special dining experience. When making dining reservations you can search online or call to talk with a Cast Member.

There are, of course, some dining choices that fill up quickest such as Chef Mickey, Crystal Palace, dinner shows such as Hoop-Dee-Do Revue and packages including  Fantasmic dining. Then there tend to be other choices, including character dining, that fill up less quickly. You check for availability and there are not many choices left. No fear because you still have options.

Cast members will be able to quickly locate what is available as well as helping you find a good fit . They will also be able to answer questions and make suggestions. If something is open, such as character dining at Hollywood and Vine in Hollywood Studios, you can ask them what characters are available as well as the menu. Then you can book it or decide to keep looking. Remember a credit card is required to hold a reservation.  You can cancel the reservation until 24-hours before the scheduled time for your meal.

Keep in mind, as well, you could find great dining reservations even when you arrive for your magical Disney vacation. Snagging a last minute dinner reservation is not an unheard of happening. When you check in or as soon as you reach your room contact a cast member.  Let them know you are on your vacation and you have reservations, but you want to check if there are any openings. The cast member will be happy to help you. You never know Cape May, character dining at the Beach Club Resort, or another dining experience you never thought of before could become available. The unexpected can lead to a magical experience and it doesn’t hurt to try because your top choice dining experience could have a cancellation that is now your reservation!

This is guest post from a C&C fan Charity.

Review of Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise, by Tom Bricker

Review of Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise, by Tom Bricker

If you subscribe to TouringPlans.com, you are probably familiar with the photographic genius of Tom Bricker. Tom is the Chief Photographer for TouringPlans, and as such is responsible for the photos at the top of each page of the website as well as the attraction photo galleries and other assignments. You may also recognize Tom’s photography from the Unofficial Guide: Color Companion to Walt Disney WorldPopular Photography Magazine, or his daily Disney photos featured on the blog he and his wife Sarah operate.

Launching the new line of eBooks produced by the TouringPlans team, Tom recently published a beautiful new eBook, Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise. As Tom explains, the project was born of two “crazy ideas.” One, the Walt Disney Company’s One More Disney Day promotion, which kept Disneyland Park open an entire 24 hours to celebrate Leap Day on February 29, 2012, and two, Tom’s plan to be there for it!

In Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise, Tom Bricker highlights some 200 stunning photographs that capture two sunrises, one sunset and all the magic of that historic Disney day. The pictures indeed are worth a thousand words, but Tom complements them nicely with tidbits of Disney trivia interspersed throughout the book. I especially appreciate the many views of the Walt and Mickey “Partners” statue. It’s as if they kept watch that day, smiling along with hitchhiking ghosts, Captain Jack Sparrow, Cast Members, Guests, and dozens of delightful details that keep one man’s dream alive.

Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise has been released as a high-quality full-color PDF that can be downloaded instantly and read on your computer or the go on your iPhone, iPad, or other eReader. It is available at a very reasonable $8.00 (USDollars). For a limited time readers of TouringPlans Blog can use discount code SUNRISE2012 at checkout to receive 25% off the purchase of Disneyland: Sunrise to Sunrise.

How Soon Should You Start Disney Planning?

How Soon Should You Start Disney Planning?

I’m not a planner in my “real life.” I don’t know what I’ll do at work tomorrow, what I’ll have for dinner or even who is picking my son up from golf practice. Tomorrow is plenty of time to work that out. But I DO know that more than six months from now, on September 19th at 7:05 pm I will be at Epcot’s Coral Reef restaurant for dinner. Disney is different. Disney requires planning far ahead of time if you want to get the most out of a trip. Luckily, even for the planning-averse such as myself, Disney planning is actually fun. Figuring out when to go, where to stay, what to eat and what to do during your trip takes time and effort, but also helps to build up the joy and wonder and magic of a Disney vacation. But what planning should you do when? Here is a rough timeline that works for me, and I hope it helps you.

The Dreaming — It’s never too early to start dreaming of Disney. Even if you know you won’t be able go for a few years, it is fun and helpful to start perusing the Disney fan sites like Chip And Company. You should set up an account on the official Walt Disney World  website as well, and start playing around with the online reservation system. Order the free vacation planning dvd and the free customized park maps. Not only are these things lots of fun to have and to look at, but ordering them will put you on Disney’s radar as a potential guest and they may start sending you special offers and pin codes.

Resort Reservations and Park Tickets — The Disney online reservation system seems to let you book a stay as far out as you like. The trouble is that you won’t know what the rates, for both rooms and park tickets, will be beyond a certain point. Rates for a new year usually are released in the early summer. For instance, the 2012 rates were released  on June 14th of 2011. Special promotions like discounted room rates and free dining can come out at any time, but they can be applied to an existing reservation easily, so there is nothing wrong with booking as soon as you know when you can go. Disney only requires a $200 deposit with the balance due 45 days prior to your arrival.

Dining Reservations — Disney calls them Advanced Dining Reservations, or ADRs, and they are important if you want to eat at specific table service restaurants. You can walk in and probably eventually get a table at most places, but making ADRs will ensure you eat where you like and when you like. The trick is, you need to decide where and when that is far in advance. Disney will accept ADRs 180 days out, and if you are staying on property, you can cheat a little. Resort guests can make up to ten days worth of ADRs 180 days out from their arrival day, which gives you a leg up on off property guests. That can be important, as some meals at some restaurants, like Cinderella’s Royal Table and Chef Mickey’s breakfasts, will fill up within hours or even minutes of the 180 day window opening. Online reservations can be made starting at 6:00 am Eastern time and the phone reservation system opens at 7.

Special Events — If you plan to attend any special events, like Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party or Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, you’ll probably want to buy advance tickets. While tickets for both are sold up to and including the day of the event, they do sell out and you don’t want to be disappointed. This can present a problem when your 180 day mark is coming up for making ADRs, but the dates of the parties have not been released.  Luckily, you can cheat. Disney’s park hours are released 6 months ahead, and the two parties begin at 7 pm. So, when you look at Magic Kingdom hours and see the park closing at 7 pm, you can be pretty sure that is a day for either MNSSHP or MVMCP and plan accordingly.

Rides? — Coming soon, perhaps, is a system that will allow Disney guests to schedule Fastpass times for certain attractions from home months in advance. The next generation Fastpass system is rumored to be going into testing this summer and may make planning a Disney trip that much more interesting. While picking which rides you will ride at what time months out won’t appeal to all guests, it will likely make the lines more manageable for everyone, whether they take advantage of the new Fastpass system or not. We’ll just have to wait to see if another opportunity to plan makes the process more fun or more of a hassle. My guess is Disney gets this one right.

Do you have any planning tips to share? If so, leave them in the comments, we’d love to hear from you.

How Soon Should You Start Disney Planning?

I Just Clicked “Confirm Reservation”….Now What?!

I Just Clicked "Confirm Reservation"....Now What?!

Congratulations!  You’ve just confirmed your vacation reservation to Walt Disney World.  Feel overwhelmed?  I understand.  Now it’s time for the fun planning-parks, restaurant reservations, shows…it’s all waiting for you!  Where to start?

1.  Make ADRs.  This means “Advanced Dining Reservations”.  If you chose the Disney Dining Plan or the Disney Deluxe Dining Plan, you are entitled to at least one sit down meal at a Diseny restaurant.  Not doing DDP or DDDP, but still want to have a character or other special meal?  You still  need ADRs.  You can start making these when you are 180 days away from your trip.  The Disney website makes it easy to make these and search for open reservations.  Or, y ou can call Disney directly and they’ll help you over the phone.  Even though we are doing Quick Service Dining, we still made reservations for two character meals.  I made these about two weeks after I booked our vacation.

2.  Plan your park days.  You plan these based on the type of ticket you have-Park Hopper or Base Ticket.  Park Hopper tickets make it easy to just “hop” from one park to the next.  You can visit multiple parks in one day with this option.  If you chose a base ticket, like we do, you can only visit one park per day.  Look at your dining reservations.  Where did you choose to eat and when?  Let’s say you chose breakfast at Crystal Palace on your first day.  You should make this a Magic Kingdom day, since Crystal Palace is located on Main Street U.S.A.  Or do you want to see Fantasmic?  Then check out the calendar for Hollywood Studios during the time of your stay.  If Fantasmic is on the Wednesday of your trip, you’ll want to make that a Disney’s Hollywood Studios day.

3.  Plan your “non park” days.  Leaving a day or so in your schedule for non park fun can add to the relaxation factor of your vacation.  Many resorts have multiple pools, crafts for the kids, and playgrounds.  Take advantage of these activities while you’re there.

I Just Clicked "Confirm Reservation"....Now What?!

4.  Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or Pirates League?  These are fun experiences for your princesses and pirates.  If you want your children to enjoy these experiences, then you’ll need to make reservations WELL in advance.  It’s a good idea to look into and book these when you make your dining reservations.

5.  Flying or driving?  Soon after your reservation is made, you’ll want to decide how you’re going to get there.  Start watching flight prices, or start mapping out your trip.  Do you need to allot money for a hotel stay on the way down and back?  Don’t forget to budget for food and gas, too.  If you make a reservation for dining or another special experience on your arrival date, make sure you get to your resort in PLENTY of time to make it to your fun event!

What am I missing?  Do you reserve dining or plan your park days first?

Magically Yours,

Carrie

Don’t Miss Out on the Magic!! Visually-Impaired Girl makes lasting Magical Memory.

Don't Miss Out on the Magic!! Visually-Impaired Girl makes lasting Magical Memory.

You’ve made your ADR’s, you’ve got your flight, hotel and admission tickets reserved and paid for, you’ve studied the park maps, and you’ve got your touring plan printed on a spreadsheet!  You’re all set for a magical vacation at Disney World… but will it actually be magical?  It won’t be if you’re racing from one attraction to another.  SLOW DOWN!  You’re going to miss the magic if you’re too rushed trying to squeeze everything in!  Had we been rushing… we would have completely missed this magical moment…

While at Disney’s Hollywood Studios last Sunday evening, we happened upon some surprise Characters appearing in The Art of Animation building (what many Disney fans refer to as Characterpalooza).  Jafar, Mary Poppins with two Penguins, Rafiki, and Chip & Dale all made a surprise appearance.  While we stood in line to meet Jafar, I noticed a family in front of us with a visually impaired daughter, about 18 years of age.  The parents positioned their daughter next to Jafar for a picture.  Being a villain, Jafar doesn’t hug or shake hands, he doesn’t interact much with anyone he meets… I couldn’t help but feel sorry for this blind girl as she simply stood still next to Jafar listening for her parent’s camera to click; making a memory for her parents, but none for herself.

That all changed when Mary Poppins and her two Penguins had their chance to interact with this blind girl.  Mary Poppins, being a face Character, was able to converse with this girl – and boy did they chat!  The girl was smiling now.  Then Mary Poppins grabbed the girl’s hands and placed them on her dress.  Mary let the girl feel her corset, the intricate stitching on her skirt, and she even lifted her foot to let the girl feel her shoe!  Mary Poppins was describing everything to this girl as she guided her hands over the details.  Then Mary pulled Mr. Penguin to her side and placed the girl’s hands on his head.  She was able to feel his eyes, his cheeks, his beak, and his bow tie!  Mr. Penguin even shook her hand.  This girl was beaming!!  She was then guided to stand in between Mary Poppins and the Penguins.  The blind girl’s parents took a picture – another keepsake for them, but this time… a lasting memory for herself – as she was finally able to see Mary Poppins and Mr. Penguin.

Next time you’re visiting Walt Disney World, slow down and observe your surroundings, you just might experience some Disney Magic happening right in front of you!

Summer Version of “The Magic, The Memories, and You!” Coming to Walt Disney World Resort

Summer Version of “The Magic, The Memories, and You!” Coming to Walt Disney World Resort

Starting on May 25, Disney Channel stars Phineas and Ferb kick off a rockin’ summer celebration that visits the beach, the jungle and under the sea with favorite Disney characters and cherished Disney music – and it all plays out on Cinderella Castle, famed icon of Walt Disney World Resort.

It’s the newest performance of the award-winning “The Magic, The Memories, and You!” Castle projection show that has amazed Magic Kingdom guests since debuting 15 months ago.  As part of Disney’s “Let the Memories Begin,” the ten-minute, nighttime spectacle features photos of guests captured in the park that very day making memories — projected larger than life among the spires, towers and turrets of Cinderella Castle. In similar fashion, guest images are projected onto “it’s a small world” at Disneyland Park in California. The popular Fantasyland attraction in Anaheim, Calif. also will feature the new summer show, starting May 25.

And what a show awaits guests on both coasts! Hang ten with surfin’ Goofy, join Timon and Pumbaa in singing Hakuna Matata, and rock out with Ariel, Sebastian and the hot crustacean band at the bottom of the ocean.

Along the way at Disney World, the Castle goes through some dramatic, eye-filling transformations, from sand castle to ancient vine-covered ruin to colorful finger-painting to tropical aquarium. With a fast-paced musical score and plenty of visual surprises, this will be the latest must-see magic that has brought Cinderella Castle / “it’s a small world” to life for the past 15 months – while retaining some of the most popular scenes that made it a hit with guests when the show bowed in 2011.

As always, the dazzling show will feature more than 500 photographs taken in each park daily, producers estimate, as guests make memories to last a lifetime.

Producers storyboarded the show as if it were a short animated film, explained Alan Bruun, creative director, Disneyland Resort. They weaved music, story, photography, video and animation into a new kind of nighttime entertainment.

“The images dance to favorite Disney tunes and culminate in a spectacular finish punctuated by animated and actual fireworks,” Bruun said. “Guests see the Castle behave in ways they would have never thought possible.”

Show times vary depending on park hours. “The Magic, The Memories, and You!” is included in theme park admission.

The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow Coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow Coming to Disney's Hollywood StudiosDisney has announced via the summer edition of Mickey Monitor, the newsletter for Annual Passholders,  that a new attraction will be coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow will be “will be a first-of-its-kind sensory experience in which Guests will have the chance to be enveloped by the world of the Pirates of the Caribbean® as seen in the four feature films.” It is assumed that the new attraction will be located in Stage 4 which was the home to Journey Into Narnia. Jason Roberts, Walt Disney Imagineering Project Manager and Show Producer the new attraction says that “This is going to be an immersive experience” and that they will “put our Guests in the middle of it all in new and exciting ways.”

While it was first reported that this attraction would open this summer, the Disney Parks Blog posted today that it would not open until this fall.  An official opening date will be announced later this year. I am excited to see what this new attraction will include. I always liked the idea of Journey into Narnia but I was let down by the actual attraction. I love seeing props from films and I think this is something that Hollywood Studios has been missing.

While artists perform at several stages, many popular Magic Kingdom attractions also are available for guests. In addition, there are special benefits for groups of 10 or more.
