Exciting, New Entertainment Fuels Cars Land, Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure Park

Exciting, New Entertainment Fuels Cars Land, Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure Park

From “Mad T Party” to the “Red Car News Boys,” an exciting new lineup of characters and shows offers something for everyone at Disney California Adventure park as Disneyland Resort celebrates the grand re-opening of the park with the new Cars Land, Buena Vista Street and Carthay Circle Theatre, featuring a restaurant and lounge. The new lands become home for new characters and street performers, while “Pixar Play Parade” returns for twice-daily performances throughout the summer and the long-running hit “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” adds extra performances. The nighttime spectacular “World of Color” continues to amaze guests with fire, water, lasers, animation and new story elements.

In Cars Land, DJ, the ultimate party car – a big road-trippin’ mobile boom box with giant speakers, built-in disc changer and his very own party crew – takes to the street for “DJ’s Dance ‘n Drive,” a spontaneous, interactive dance party. Also at Cars Land is Red the Fire Truck who, with the help of his comic “Volunteer Fireman,” recruits guests of all ages to join “Red to the Rescue!” – helping water the flowers and clean up the town of Radiator Springs. (Prepare to get wet!)

Of course, Lightning McQueen and Mater, leading citizens of Cars Land, also are enjoying time on the streets of Radiator Springs, greeting and posing for photographs with guests near the Cozy Cone Motel.

Buena Vista Street, inspired by the Los Angeles of the 1920s and ’30s when Walt Disney was launching his animation studios, is brought to life with a series of eccentric personalities, the Citizens of Buena Vista Street. Among the “citizens” strolling the street and immersing guests in the period atmosphere are a fun-loving photographer, a misguided messenger, a dotty dog lover and a comic cop.

Inspired by the spirit and style of Disney’s movie and stage musical “Newsies,” the “Red Car News Boys” roll into Buena Vista Street aboard one of the street’s distinctive Red Car Trolleys, performing a variety of authentic period tunes such as “California, Here I Come.”  Mickey Mouse, the fun-loving, mischievous young cartoon star of the period, joins the boys for a high-energy street show.

Also arriving on Buena Vista Street, by means of a makeshift jalopy en route to Hollywood, are “Five & Dime,” an innovative sextet of maverick musicologists longing for their big break. “Dime,” the female vocalist of the group, has charisma and a voice like a young Ella Fitzgerald, and the group enlists some “new musicians” from among the spectators to perform side-splitting versions of ’20s and ’30s song standards.

All the colorful characters interacting with guests along Buena Vista Street reflect the spirit of optimism and opportunity Walt Disney discovered when he first arrived in California. Dressed in period attire of the 1920s and ’30s, each performer has a unique identity that brings this boulevard of dreams to life, creating impromptu laughter and memories.

Over in Condor Flats, near Soarin’ Over California, Minnie Mouse plays hostess for a tune-filled “travelogue” of song, dance and interactive moments. “Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline” features Minnie and her four-member crew singing and swinging to songs from the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. The show includes opportunities for guests to meet Minnie and join the dancing.

After dark, a new nighttime family celebration takes over Hollywood Land. “Mad T Party” is a fantastic soiree filled with surprises and new takes on some familiar characters from the world of Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” It’s a party like no other as guests fall into the rabbit hole and land in a wild and whimsical world where nothing is what it seems. A live band, unique entertainment, fun-filled games and plenty of dancing await guests seeking an escape into a bright and vivid alternate reality.

The all-new entertainment joins an existing lineup highlighted by “World of Color,” the colorful water, laser and animation spectacular performing on Paradise Bay, and the long-running hit “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular.” “Disney’s Aladdin,” ever popular with guests, adds a fifth daily performance through the summer season.

An extended Disney California Adventure parade route, the longest in any Disney theme park, serves as the stage for the returning “Pixar Play Parade,” now traveling all the way through Hollywood Land and onward to Paradise Pier. “Pixar Play Parade” invites guests of all ages to share the thrills of a whirling, spinning, fun-for-all animated playground featuring acrobatics, bungees, playful choreography and interactive surprises that bring to life the exciting and colorful worlds of Disney•Pixar pals from “Toy Story,” “a bug’s life,” ” Monsters, Inc.,” “Finding Nemo,” “The Incredibles” and “Cars.”

Disney Announces ‘Castle: The Complete Fourth Season’ Will Hit DVD September 11, 2012

Disney Announces 'Castle: The Complete Fourth Season' Will Hit DVD September 11, 2012

One of my favorite shows over the last few years has been ABC’s Castle. Starring Nathan Fillion, who I’ve been a fan of since Joss Whedon’s sadly short lived ‘Firefly’, the show follows his Novelist character Richard Castle as he shadows Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), who his newest character Nikki Heat is based on. This show has continued to be one of my favorite mystery shows on television, and season four has been my favorite of the series. So I have to say, I’m very excited that Disney has announced today that ‘Castle: The Complete Fourth Season’ will be arriving on DVD on September 11, 2012. I’m very, very excited to get my hands on the next season and relive the season from it’s action packed first episode to the shocking season finale. I’m definitely looking forward to adding it to my collection. The first season will retail for $45.99. Anyone else excited for season four? Hit the jump for the press release.

CASTLE: The Complete Fourth Season

Television’s most unlikely crime-fighting team is back and their relationship is stronger than ever!  Prepare for a season full of suspense where lines are drawn, sides are chosen and careers are put on the line as Castle tries to protect Beckett following her near death encounter.  Castle’s relationship with Beckett radically changes during the season, leading to a final confrontation with a mysterious man who holds all the answers that Beckett has been searching for since the night her mother was murdered.

Featuring Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, Jon Huertas, Seamus Dever, Tamala Jones, Penny Johnson Jerald, Susan Sullivan and Molly C. Quinn, the fourth season of “Castle” is more action-packed than ever before.

Features all 23 episodes plus exclusive bonus material including “Nathan & Friends: Castle Goes Radio;” “Anatomy of A Stunt;” audio commentaries, deleted scenes, and bloopers.

What Not to Miss at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort

What Not to Miss at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort

Our family had the pleasure of staying at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort last June.  Coronado Springs is a very large resort, and we found some fun (aside from the pool) tucked in our resort.  Spending the day at your resort can be so much fun, and it is worthwhile to work a resort day into your trip.  If you find yourself staying at Coronado Springs, I hope you’ll take some time to explore the following:

1.  Lago Dorado.  This is the HUGE lake around which the resort is situated.  As you stroll the .75 mile path around the lake, you’ll come upon some hammocks.  These are such a nice touch to the resort.  We found ourselves relaxing on the hammocks in the sand, enjoying the lake after a long day at the parks.

What Not to Miss at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort

2.  The Dig Site.  The pool at Coronado Springs is not “just a pool”.  It has a huge, awesome Mayan pyramid with water trickling down as the centerpiece of the pool area.  The slide here is awesome.  It’s one of the longest (123 feet) on property, and our kids absolutely loved it!  While our older boys were having a blast on the pool, I found myself relaxing with our young daughter in the small sprinkling/splash pool beside the slide.  The small child pool area has small fountains to play in and just enough water to keep the little ones happy.  Another fun part of the pool is the huge water fountain in the middle of the main area.  It is not only pretty to look at, the water coming out of it adds a nice touch.

3.  Sand volleyball and ping pong.  Next to the snack bar of the Dig Site, you’ll find a sand volleyball court and ping pong tables.  There were families and friends on the volleyball court all the time!  Such fun!

4.  The Explorer’s playground.  Behind the slide of the Dig Site, is the Explorer’s Playground.  Here, kids can play, climb, and dig for archaeological treasures.

5.  Quiet pools.  The big Dig Site not your thing?  Want to relax with your family in a quieter area?  Coronado Springs has three quiet pools located in each of the guest room sections of the resort.

What Not to Miss at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort

6.  Enjoy the landscaping.  One thing that stood out to us at Coronado Springs was the gorgeous landscaping.  Not only is the lake beautiful, but there are topiaries, huge flowering plants, and lush green everywhere.  It’s one of the prettiest resorts in my opinion.  Just outside the entrance to Pepper Market is a fun topiary of the Three Cabelleros!

I hope you’ll take some time to enjoy your resort.  Or, if you’re out resort hopping, check out Coronado Springs.

Magically Yours,

Carrie

“The Color of Money” is Coming to Blu-Ray!

"The Color of Money" is Coming to Blu-Ray!

One of my favorite films from the 1980s is making its way to Blu-ray for its 25th anniversary, The Color of Money!  A young and up-and-comer named Tom Cruise gets to share the silver screen with a legend, Paul Newman.  Newman won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the life-long hustler Fast Eddie, which is arguably the best role of his career.  Color of Money has wonderful bouts of drama, comedy, romance and action.  Make sure you mark your calendars and pick up a copy on its release date of June 5, 2012!

From the press release:

Experience legendary actor Paul Newman in the role that earned him an Academy Award® for Best Actor in 1986. Newman joins Hollywood megastar Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) in Academy Award®-winning Martin Scorsese’s (Best Director, 2006, The Departed) brilliant and powerful drama, The Color of Money – now available for the first time on Blu-ray™ with an astonishing digital transfer.

Revisiting one of his most memorable roles, Newman stars as Fast Eddie Felson from The Hustler. Eddie forms a profitable alliance with the flashy and talented young pool shark Vince (Cruise), but all bets are off when Vince’s arrogance costs them more than just a few matches. Celebrate the 25th anniversary of this dazzling classic – now better than ever on Blu-ray!

Marvel Begins Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Marvel Begins Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

After the breakout success of Marvel’s ‘The Avengers’ this weekend, Bob Iger has announced the beginning of phase 2 of Marvel’s film development. We’ve known for some time that some of our favorite heroes were on the way to getting sequels, including ‘Iron Man 3’ being directed by Shane Black, ‘Thor 2’ being directed by directed by Alan Taylor, and ‘Captain America 2’, which doesn’t have a director yet.  On top of that, there is still ‘Ant-Man’, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, ‘The Runaways’, and ‘The Inhumans’ in the work. But the most exciting thing is Iger is already looking to gear up a potential sequel to ‘The Avengers!’

Iger had this to say regarding the future of the Marvel films:

“The Avengers isn’t just a film. It’s a franchise from our perspective. Obviously, it was helped a lot by the success of the ‘Iron Man’ movies and of ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America’. From ‘The Avengers’ we get a chance to make ‘Thor 2’ and ‘Captain America 2’ and ‘Iron Man 3’ and hopefully another ‘Avengers’ movie. So this one film that is immensely successful… is going to get a number of other films and franchises.”

He then went on to say:

“We have an ability to leverage what was a very fun film done by a great group of filmmakers into something much bigger for the company, and the effect will be prolonged and that’s very, very exciting for us.”

So what do you guys have to say about this? I’ve loved all six of Marvel studios films so far, and I can’t wait to see where they go next. What are you most looking forward to seeing next? And are there any Marvel characters you hope they’ll be adapting to the big screen? Let me know in the comments below!

Disney Announces ABC's 'Revenge' is Coming to DVD August 21, 2012

One of ABC’s biggest breakouts this year was the new drama, ‘Revenge’. I’ve heard nothing but great things so far about it, and it is really growing a huge fan base that most shows take time to garner. The word of mouth alone has had me intrigued, and now it looks like I’ll get a chance to play catch up when Disney releases ‘Revenge: The Complete First Season’ on DVD on August 21, 2012. The show revolves the harrowing journey of Emily Thorne, who is on a quest for revenge against the people in the Hamptons who destroyed her life years before. The plot alone has me quite intrigued, so I’m very excited to see down and see how it plays out. I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes on this one. The first season will run at about $45.99, and comes with quite a few bonus features to boot. Fans of the show will love it. Are you a fan of the series? Fun Ways To Get Wet At Walt Disney World

Fun Ways To Get Wet At Walt Disney World

While most families have plans to stay dry while visiting Walt Disney World, others look for ways to get wet and cool off on those hot, humid, summer days.  Sure, you and your party can ride attractions that will get you wet such as Splash Mountain or Kali River Rapids (or just stand on the bridges outside the attraction and try to catch a splash), but I’m referring to other ways to get wet!

The obvious is take a dip in the pool back at your resort, or spend a day at one of the water parks: Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach. But did you know there are still other ways to get wet at Walt Disney World?  (And I’m not talking about playing in the rain during the “summer showers” in Central Florida- however, that will work too!!)

  1. Find a fountain in the parks and stand downwind.  If you’re lucky, you can catch a delightful breeze that has a mist from the fountain.
  2. Visit one of the misting stations: Epcot has the Cooling Station near Test Track and Hollywood Studios has a Coke bottle at the end of Pixar Place near Streets of America.
  3. Jump in the stream of “squirting water” at Star Tours (Hollywood Studios), the camels at The Flying Carpets of Aladdin (Magic Kingdom) or Stitch at The World of Disney (Downtown Disney).
  4. Play in the “splash pads” at Downtown Disney Marketplace as you enter from the bus stop or Epcot before the bridge from Future World to World Showcase.
  5. Play in the “jumping water” at Journey Into Imagination at Epcot.
  6. Splash in the water features outside Kali River Rapids.
  7. Rent watercraft, parasail or water ski on the lakes at Walt Disney World.

What is your favorite way to get wet on a hot day at Walt Disney World?

By using their wits and bravery, gamers will also be able to wield a sword and bow to defeat fierce enemies, break a magical curse and save a kingdom. “Brave: The Video Game” launches Summer 2012 for PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Wii™, Nintendo DS™ and Windows PC/MAC.

ABOUT THE MOVIE
Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. From Disney and Pixar, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition and challenges destiny to change her fate.

“Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida, a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her skills and resources – including her clever and mischievous triplet brothers – to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late, discovering the meaning of true bravery.

Directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman, and produced by Katherine Sarafian, “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and signature Pixar humor that audiences of all ages around the world have come to eagerly expect. The film takes aim at theaters on June 22, 2012, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

Disney Photo Travel Tips & Techniques

Disney Photo Travel Tips & Techniques

This helpful post comes to us from the phenomenal Disney Photographer Tom Bricker of Touring Plans & Disney Tourist Blog. He shares some tips and techniques on shooting beautiful Disney photos as seen on his site and in the Unofficial Guide to Disney World & Land.

As a travel photographer focusing on Disney theme park photography, I’m often asked about getting the best vacation photos. As a landscape photographer, I can recognize and appreciate the difficulty a lot of people have in capturing good family vacation photos, because I have struggled with it, too. It can be tough to get great family photos on vacation that are more than just the typical “stand in front of a landmark and snap a shot” style photos. Creating fun and frame-worthy family vacation photos is actually quite easy, so long as you have the right mindset. Learning more about the technical side of photography is key to great photos, but if you don’t have the time for this, there are a few simple fixes anyone can quickly make for better family vacation photos. I’m going to focus on simply technique rather than on technical settings, but if you have the time and desire, try to learn a bit of both.

That said, here are my tips for great family vacation photos, with examples from Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

Disney Photo Travel Tips & Techniques

1. Generic Posed Shots Get Old.

One of the most common pitfalls of family vacation photos is the tendency to to only take posed shots in front of landmarks. These are what I call the “proof we were there” photos. These photos generally just involve standing in front of the landmark, with no engagement in the environment whatsoever and a pretty standard pose, and smiling. Photos like this don’t really capture the emotion or feeling of the vacation. This practice can also get old very quick for your party. This type of shot is not all that representative of your experience, and will not prove that interesting for folks to whom you show your vacation photos.

Think about it. Unless your vacations are starkly different in nature from mine, the substance of your trip generally does not consist of you going up to various objects, standing in front of them, and engaging in “arms-crossed, hair-combed, smiles-full” activities. When I see vacation slideshows like this, I often think to myself, “Wow, these folks have a real knack for standing in front of things!” These shots just get boring after a while. Essentially, they are the exact same shot of the people in the photo, just with different backgrounds, green-screen style.  This is not to say that this type of shot should never be used, it just shouldn’t be the de facto “go to” for family vacation photos. The tips that follow will help you minimize this style of family vacation photography.

Disney Photo Travel Tips & Techniques

2. Mix It Up With Fun Poses.

I have an uncanny knack for foolish poses. However, I see this as a good thing, at least most of the time. When I’m photographed, I often like to let loose, making a pose that fits the subject and theme of the photo. For fun shots, try to think of clever poses that fit the background and area in which the photo is taken. For instance, if you get a photo near the Seas pavilion at Walt Disney World’s Epcot, posing like something from the sea would be a good option. It’s unlikely that you can illustrate “boat,” “submarine,” or “giant squid” through expressions or poses (if you can, I want you on my Charades team!) but you can certainly pose like a fish by puffing your cheeks and putting your hands to the side of your face as fins or pose like a shark by placing your hand atop your head. It’s okay to act like a kid in some of your photos!

With regard to Disney vacations, character shots are another area in which I think it’s necessary to have some fun to achieve a good shot. If you just awkwardly go stand next to the character as if they’re a living prop, the picture might not be as good, but more importantly, the experience will not be as good. We always go into character pictures with a plan. Something we’re going to say something to them (e.g., in jest calling Goofy by the name “Pluto”) that will rile them up. From there, we proceed with the interaction and have a good time. If you have young kids, I would recommend indoctrinating them to the world of the characters in a manner that allows them to play and interact with the characters, rather than treating the characters like a photo prop or autograph machine. If you want the whole family in the photo, hand off your camera to the PhotoPass Cast Member (or purchase a PhotoPass CD or prints) or Character Attendant, and let the Cast Member capture the interaction and whatever pose we’ve thought up for the experience.

Much like the “proof we were there” style from tip 1, the fun pose style shouldn’t be overused. Although just as posed as the “proof we were there” photos, this type of photo is a nice cross between an almost candid style and a pure pose-driven style of family vacation photos.

3. Capture the Moments with Candid Photos.

There are a lot of great candid moments that go un-photographed simply because we don’t think to capture the moment with a photo. These moments can make for some of the best photos, so it’s critical to break this mentality and capture these moments! Technical perfection is unimportant with these photos, so don’t worry if the lighting isn’t the best or something isn’t perfect about the scene. Candid photos are simple photos that are, quite simply, snapshots in time. When they work well, it’s not because of anything technically perfect or imperfect about the photo, it’s because they capture the emotion in a particular moment in time.

Capturing candid moments can be extremely difficult. People “doing things” make great subjects. When on vacation, children being captivated by their surroundings can make for great candid photos. For example, when at Walt Disney World or Disneyland, when a child first approaches a character, capture their expression and mannerisms as they see the character for the first time or approach the character, rather than waiting until they pose to take the perfect photo. Once you get in a rhythm of capturing this type of photo, you will see more and more candid photo opportunities. Like I said above, this type of photography is difficult at first, but once you develop an eye for these moments and get in the habit of taking photos when you normally wouldn’t, it becomes easy.

4. Use Scenery to Layer Photos.

This won’t always be possible, but when you’re in a location that has some visual foreground and background layers, some to position yourselves between some of those layers to make the photo more interesting. This can be a difficult one with some subjects where there isn’t much you can put in the foreground to give the photo layers.

At Walt Disney World, World Showcase in Epcot is one of my favorite places to layer shots because there are so many rich visual details and beautiful architecture. It’s easy to compose a beautifully layered shot in World Showcase.

One of the things you’re looking to accomplish by layering the shots is to avoid that “green screen” look to which I alluded above. You don’t want your vacation photos to merely appear as you standing in front of a bunch of things, so any way you can immerse yourself with your environment that may demonstrate an interaction with your surroundings will not only make for a more interesting shot, but also will make it seem like you had a more enjoyable trip. Instead of people viewing your vacation photos thinking that your family just begrudgingly went somewhere and stood in front of things, they’ll think you went somewhere and did things! At least, I know I think these types of things when I look at vacation photos.

5. Take as many pictures as you can while still having fun!

Remember, you’re on vacation. Relax. The entire trip should not be about playing family historian or setting up photo shoot after photo shoot. Just as you may get sick of taking pictures, yet feel obligated to do so, your family may get sick of being in pictures (but yet feel obligated to do so). Do what feels natural or is right for your family. That might mean getting as few as 20 family shots in a weeklong trip or as many as 2,000. Only you know what the magic number is for your family.

So there you have a few of my tips for better family vacation photos. By following these tips, anyone can easily achieve family vacation photos that are more interesting and fun, without learning a lot about the technical side of photography!
