Boy Gives Trips to Disney World to Family of a Fallen Soldier

Boy Gives Trips to Disney World to Family of a Fallen Soldier
From the Solider for a Solider Facebook Page

A 9 year old Massachusetts boy did something that most adults would think twice about, he gave away an all expenses paid trip Walt Disney World that he earned through a Facebook experiment.

Inspired by a story of a man who turned a paper clip into a house through a series of trades, Brendan Haas set up his Soldier for a Solider Facebook page in February. He began with a toy soldier and was able to trade for airfare, hotel credits, and $900 worth of Disney gift cards.

On Memorial Day, he drew the name of Liberty Hope Steele out of a hat. She is the 2 year old daughter of U.S. Army Lt. Timothy Steele who was killed in Afghanistan last year. “I think it would make them a lot happier,” Brendan Haas said.

After the news broke of Brendan’s good need his Facebook page was flooded with comments. “If everyone was like Brendan there would be no wars,” Bob Wade wrote. “Brendan, being 9 years old you may not fully realize how incredibly thoughtful your gift is but someday you will. I hope you continue to do great things in your life. The world needs people like you.”

Big Help for Hunger Relief Gets Underway

Big Help for Hunger Relief Gets Underway

Disney executives were among a group of community leaders who helped Second Harvest Food Bank break ground on a new $15 million facility that will provide hunger relief for thousands of Central Floridians in need.

On May 30, the construction of the 100,000-square-foot distribution center got under way marking a milestone in the “Building Solutions to Hunger” capital campaign. Last year Walt Disney World Resort donated $500,000 to this campaign and pledged 20,000 pounds of fresh produce to Second Harvest.

“We know that a contribution today in this new facility will benefit our community for decades to come,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of community relations for Walt Disney World Resort. “I encourage other companies to join in this outstanding community effort.”

Scheduled to open its doors in early 2013, the new facility will serve 55,000 people each week and will help provide one million more meals for children every year. Due to insufficient space Second Harvest is forced to turn away more than four million pounds of donated food each year.

“The worst part is, most of the rejected donations were nutritious, high-quality fresh fruits, vegetables and meals. It’s heartbreaking,” said Dave Krepcho, president and CEO of Second Harvest.

Last year more than 730,000 people, half of them children, received emergency food in the six Central Florida counties served by Second Harvest.

Understanding this need, Walt Disney World has shown its commitment by providing financial support, sponsoring food drives and encouraging Cast Members to volunteer their time to sort food. Since 1971, Disney has also donated several million pounds of food through its “Harvest Program” which collects prepared and un-served food from eateries throughout the resort’s properties and delivers it to the food bank five days a week.

Disney VoluntEARS Plant Herbs at Transitional Home

A group of families now can spice up their meals with rosemary, oregano and basil thanks to the work of VoluntEARS from Disney’s Boardwalk Inn who planted and delivered the herbs to the transitional housing facility where they live in Kissimmee.

This community effort was initiated by a group of Boardwalk Cast Members who reached out to HOME (Helping Others Make the Effort), a non-profit organization that provides services to homeless families.

“It feels great to be able to contribute in any way we can in our community. One of the things our company stands for is being a great partner in Central Florida,” said Boardwalk Inn General Manager, Dave Venables. “We look forward to more opportunities like this one”.

The Disney Fantasy rescued four Cuban men aboard a small raft near Key West, Florida after they signaled for help. The ship was on its way to Grand Caymen when the men were spotted.

The men were brought aboard the ship and were given food and water as well as medical attention. A Disney spokesmen said “We are proud of our Disney Fantasy crew members, who skillfully demonstrated their training and commitment to maritime protocols around saving lives at sea.”

It is not known what would happen to the men once the ship reached Grand Cayman. Disney did reply to Cruise Critic with the following statement, “We have notified the U.S. Coast Guard of this rescue and we are working with the proper authorities to coordinate the debarkation of the group … It would be up to those authorities to determine next steps.”

The big blue world of Nemo and friends comes to life just in time for the summer vacation season as Disney’s Art of Animation Resort opens its doors today with Finding Nemo, the first phase of  the new resort offering at Walt Disney World Resort.

Opening in phases, each of four distinctly designed wings celebrates rich storytelling, spirited characters, original sketches and playfulness with colorful icons and whimsical theming inspired by classic Disney and Disney•Pixar films.

Family suite wings will showcase “Finding Nemo opening today with 320 suites, “Cars opening June 18 with 480 suites, and “The Lion King” opening Aug. 10 with 320 suites. All the themed areas offer elaborate storytelling both inside and out, from each beloved film depicted. Standard guest rooms will make up “The Little Mermaid” wing, the final phase set to open Sept. 15 with 864 rooms.

The three-story, value-priced resort tells the story of the animation process in phases from pencil drawings to close ups. It will immediately transport guests into the worlds of favorite Disney characters and animated films beginning at check-in as pixilated patterns and wavy ribbons of bold colors decorate the resort’s exterior. Pencil drawings of Ariel, Lightning McQueen, Nemo and Simba adorn the entryway, and a whimsical chandelier composed of 77 animation storyboards enhances the lively and modern Animation Hall lobby.

“Our goal was to make guests feel like they have been immersed in the artistry and enchantment of Walt Disney and Disney•Pixar animated classics,” said Walt Disney Imagineer Frank Paris.

Giant sketchbooks filled with favorite characters seem to come to life as they pave the way to each storyline revealed. Scenic settings, icons—including a brightly-colored coral landscape, a 35-foot-tall model of King Triton, a towering Mufasa and more—immerse guests into the playful world of animation. At the “Cars” wing, a freshly paved road will lead to the Cozy Cone Motel complete with a Cozy Cone pool and cone-shaped cabanas. It’s a journey through an African landscape in “The Lion King” complete with an elephant graveyard play area that invites youngsters to seek hakuna matata time. Treasures from the human world fill Ariel’s grotto in an under- the-sea kingdom in Little Mermaid courtyard.

From linens and carpeting to fixtures and furniture, all details of the guestrooms tie to the storyline. In “Finding Nemo,” there’s coral-shaped chairs and bubble ceiling lights; rusty metallic tiles in the bathroom make guests feel as though they are in the submarine. Zazu takes center stage on the headboards in “The Lion King,” while Pumbaa and Timon decorate the shower curtain.

Kids of all ages can make a splash at the “Big Blue” pool, the largest resort swimming pool at Walt Disney World Resort measuring 11,859 square feet. Guests will feel like they are swimming with Dory and Nemo as underwater speakers periodically pipe in music and messages from film characters. Guests will enter scenes from the animated world and can explore the colorful reef and East Australian Current with a giant-sized Mr. Ray whose wings span 27 feet, pose for a picture with Crush or frolic with Squirt in the Righteous Reef, a children’s play area. And the character sketches become three dimensional with some 2,500 sculpted figures decorating the resort’s exterior and interior.

The Pixel Play Arcade, Drop Off pool bar, and Ink and Paint gift shop round out the offerings. Kids will enjoy the daily character artist in the “Finding Nemo” lobby, and nighttime movies poolside. There are two additional pools under way in the “Cars” and “The Lion King” wings as well.

Dining options include a poolside snack bar, pizza delivery and Landscape of Flavors food court. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the food court features items such as fresh smoothies, hand-scooped gelato and Mongolian barbecue. Original backgrounds from featured films decorate the walls in the dining area, adding to the attention to detail and sense of immersion.

The whimsical property, situated adjacent to Disney’s Pop Century Resort, will open in phases with rates from $248 per night. The 1,120 family suites include two bathrooms, a kitchenette and three separate sleeping areas that can sleep up to six. The 864 standard rooms sleep up to four, with rates as low as $94.

“Disney’s Art of Animation Resort is part of our continued investment in Central Florida and helps keep our region squarely on the map as the world’s premiere family vacation destination,” said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Operations, US and France. “As more and more families travel and make memories together, they also want to stay together, which has created demand for family suites.”

Those staying at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort are treated to complimentary transportation, Extra Magic Hours and other benefits available to a Disney Resort hotel guest.

Powering Through: Disney for the Migraine Sufferer

Powering Through: Disney for the Migraine Sufferer

Migraines are the worst! For me, a full blown migraine equals total shutdown. I want to crawl into the darkest, quietest, place. My head pounds and smells send me over the edge. I try my hardest to avoid migraines in my day to day life, but especially when I am at Disney World. When the severity equals a total loss, it is important to think about prevention. For me, there are several triggers. Some which I can control and some which I have no control over. Today I am sharing my strategies for making my vacation magic minus the migraines!

#1 Be Prepared

Scar knew what he was talking about! Granted, he was refering to the overthrow of the animal kingdom, but I am here to tell you that being prepared can save you! I come to the parks with basic medications that I can get to if needed. Amongst my mini pharmacy are basic ibuephropin and my over the counter migraine medicine. Keeping your own medicine with you is not only helpful but it also can save you cash. I am pretty particular about brand so carrying my own helps to make sure that I get what I need when I get a headache coming on. I get a lot of pre-migraine warnings like halo vision, mine looks like dots of bright shimmering light or flashes of light. I also get a shooting pain on one side of my head with an ache in my eyes. I have learned to pay attention to these signs. Sometimes I can treat those signs with meds and avoid the pain later.

Top 5 Overlooked Disney World Attractions

Top 5 Overlooked Disney World Attractions

When visiting Walt Disney World, popular attractions such as Space Mountain, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, and Expedition Everest are at the top of everyone’s list; but what about the other attractions?

Some of my favorite attractions at Walt Disney World are often overlooked as guests, clutching FastPasses hurry through the parks. While these attractions may not pack as many thrills, they still offer Disney magic and often come in handy during the peak summer season from the crowds and long lines!

Disney Halts Production on ‘Order of Seven’

Disney Halts Production on 'Order of Seven'

It looks like the sting of John Carter’s box office results is still being felt by Disney. According to reports Disney has halted production on Order of Seven. The film, which is a Snow White inspired martial arts epic, had already begun pre-production and director Michael Gracey had planned to being filming in London this summer according to Collider.

It seems Disney wants to look over the films budget although no amounts have been disclosed. The film as also being overseen by former studio head Rich Ross which may also factor in to the delay. The film could still get the green light from Disney at some point. The recently hired two new writers to polish the script. The story, which had a young woman (Saoirse Ronan) in 19th century Hong Kong escaping from her wicked stepmother to take upwith a band of seven warriors. I hope the film does end up getting made, even with two other Snow White films already hitting theaters.

Disney World Quick Tips – How to stay cool and Hydrated

Disney World Quick Tips – How to stay cool and Hydrated

Right around this time of year everyone is looking for ways to stay cool while braving the heat at the Walt Disney World Resort. Some areas of the parks have full exposure to the hot Florida other areas just get really hot from being enclosed and not allowing for much breeze. Whatever the reason lets all just agree it can get quite HOT!

Here are a few tips for staying cool while at the Disney Parks.

  • Wear Light Color Clothing. We all remember this from school dark color attracts sun/heat.
  • Drink plenty of Water! Mio Water Enhancer fits perfect in your pocket and is perfect to add to your water. I recommend the Energy variety of flavors to help keep a spring in my step.
  • Speaking of water. Remember any quick service restaurant will give you a cup of Ice Water for free by law! You just have to walk in and ask!
