Disney California Adventure’s Grand Reopening Nothing Short of Magical

Disney California Adventure's Grand Reopening Nothing Short of Magical

I was lucky enough to be invited to attend California Adventure’s grand reopening this past weekend. If you’re planning a visit sometime in the future, you’re definitely in for a treat.

Disney California Adventure's Grand Reopening Nothing Short of Magical

Hundreds of people filled up the esplanade area, lined up to get into DCA for a chance to see the opening ceremony. The lines zig-zagged for what seemed like forever! Before the ceremony began, I was lucky enough to be standing right next to the new “Storytellers” statue. Someone very special came over to pose for a photo with young Walt — John Lasseter! I was definitely at the right place at the right time.

The ceremony began with a performance by the new Red Car News Boys cast (they’re wonderful). Mickey joined them onstage to greet Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger.

With the newsies looking on from the sides of the stage, Iger spoke about Walt’s journey to California and how that man with a dream created so much magic that exists today. After some chit chat with Mickey and being joined by other Disney characters, DCA was officially open.

Cars Land cast members led the official Cars Land rope drop. It was a gas hose! Guests were anxious to explore Radiator Springs and closely followed the cast members to the new land. The Fast Pass time for Radiator Springs Racers kept getting later and later as guests snatched up their FPs as quickly as they could. (Later in the day, the line would grow to be approximately seven hours long!)

While the park was crowded, opening day was so much fun. I want to take this little moment to give a few shout outs:

Erin Glover — thank you SO much for allowing me to attend as media. I had a blast. Everything was incredible. The entire time I was there I kept thinking, “Wow, I’m so lucky to be able to do this!” You’ve made this a truly magical experience for a young blogger! I look forward to keeping in touch with you and hopefully meeting you in person at the next event. You’re awesome.

Kevin A. Healy from DOSArtistry.com — thank you for playing photographer for me on opening day. There’s no way I could have gotten photos like yours. I just don’t have that kind of skill. You all can see Kevin’s photos in my other DCA post.

Shaun Brookhyser, Mike Pero, and Luke Meeker — you guys managed to make crazy busy opening day so much fun. Thanks for hanging with me and dealing with me all day long. I didn’t think such a busy, hectic day could be so amazing. Can’t wait to do it all again.

Be on the lookout for my other post with photos from Buena Vista Street and Cars Land!

Walt Disney Animation Studios announced  that “Paperman,” a groundbreaking short film combining the best of the computer-generated and hand-drawn animation worlds, will make its theatrical debut in front of Wreck-It Ralph that hits theaters nationwide on Nov. 2, 2012.

Using a minimalist black-and-white style, the short follows the story of a lonely young man in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes an unexpected turn after a chance meeting with a beautiful woman on his morning commute. Convinced the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what fate has in store for him.

Sounds pretty cool!

Teaching Kids Responsibility with Disney Gift Cards

Teaching Kids Responsibility with Disney Gift Cards

Kids eyes light up at almost everything in Walt Disney World, but they especially get excited at the thought of bringing a treasure home from their great vacation.  Disney Gift Cards can be an excellent learning tool in teaching your kids responsibility, budgeting and how to make good choices.  Hand your child a Disney Gift Card on your next Disney vacation; they’ll be learning how to be responsible and not even know it!

Security.  Rather than letting your child carry around a small wad of cash (or even you carrying it for them), give them a Disney gift card to carry around.  Losing a Disney gift card is an annoyance, but as long as you have the card # from the back (take a picture or photocopy the back of each gift card), you can get the lost gift card “cancelled” and transfer the remaining balance over to a new card.  If your child loses their cash, they’re sadly out of luck.

Top 5 Reasons To Be Excited About Disney’s Art of Animation

Top 5 Reasons To Be Excited About Disney's Art of Animation

Disney’s newest resort, the Art of Animation, has a lot to be excited about! When I went to check out this resort for myself, I was excited to see what new details and experiences Disney has brought to the table; and I’m happy to report that I was very impressed! If this resort is a taste of things to come, then Disney is on the right track.

To narrow things down a bit, here are five reasons why you should be excited about this resort too!

5. Rooms-Most of Disney’s resort rooms feature a theme and decor which appeals to adults, with only subtle references to Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters. Also, the room sizes typically cater to a family of four with their standard size. However, at this resort, your rooms immerse you into the worlds of Finding Nemo, Cars, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid! Also, while you can choose standard size rooms, this resort primarily offers family suites which sleep up to six family members! These rooms are sure to delight kids and offer parents the space they need. Did we mention the extra bathroom too?

4. Landscape of Flavors-This resort food court has five different stations offering different menus; but unlike other food courts, the Landscape of Flavors has healthier options for guests to enjoy. Also, the kitchens are more open and on display than in other food courts, so guests can see their meals being prepared. Although, if you are looking for the standard burger and fries, don’t be concerned. Traditional fare is served here too.

Phineas & Ferb Perry Files DVD Review

Phineas & Ferb Perry Files DVD Review

Who doesn’t love Agent P? I have found myself turning on Phineas & Ferb when there is nothing on or watching it as my daughter turns it on and leaves the room. It is a really good show.

Earlier this month Disney released The Perry Files on DVD. It is basically a compilation of 7 full length episodes from the show featuring our favorite secret Agent. It even has on it my favorite episode where Dr D gets records glued to his fingers and he has a platypus controlling him. WHAT!? For those who haven’t seen that episode here is a very catchy video clip that will get stuck in your head.

I would not buy this DVD or the Combo Pack (which is what Disney sent me) for the extras, as they are pretty slim. I will say the Platypus Mood Magnet is on our fridge and is constantly used by my daughter and I am still finding stickers around the house and in the car but overall the extras are not the reason why I would pick up this DVD.

I would get it just to have some Phineas and Ferb DVD’s to carry around with you. Other than the Phineas & Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension there is not many DVD’s out there for this great show. If anyone at Disney is reading this I would LOVE if I could pick up complete seasons of the show on DVD or Bluray!

Overall the DVD is solid with some great episodes you can watch over and over. In my case I listened to them over and over as we were on vacation last week driving all over the East Coast. I think my 2 girls watched that DVD a good 10-15 times through out the week and are still going strong. The combo pack will set you back around $20 and would make a great gift for someone not familiar with the show. So head on out and get your copy today!

I give it an A-

Diving at Walt Disney World

Diving at Walt Disney World

Being hours from the nearest body of salt water doesn’t mean Disney can’t offer some incredibly fun and educational diving and snorkeling experiences. I mean, it’s the most magical place on earth, right? So for all you divers and Jacques Cousteau wanna-bes, here are some opportunities to “get wet” and swim with the fishes in Walt Disney World.

Epcot Divequest DiveQuest is a SCUBA experience open to guests 10 years old or older with a SCUBA certification. The program lasts three hours and includes a 40 minute dive in the 5.7 million gallon The Seas With Nemo And Friends saltwater tank. If you’ve visited this attraction or eaten in the Coral Reef restaurant, you may have seen these tours in action. Aside from the dive, which offers a chance to interact with tons of fish without the bother of actual ocean currents, guest tour the massive backstage area where the tanks are controlled and their inhabitants cared for. This tour costs $175 per person and all equipment is included. A park admission ticket is not required.

Disney World Quick Tips: Don’t Miss the Sponteneity

Disney World Quick Tips: Don't Miss the Sponteneity

With the rumors and testing of Disney’sXPass coupled with the recent ticket price increase, one might wonder if you’re expected to pre-plan every moment of your Walt Disney World vacation.

I’m a planner. I love to plan. I will plan our vacation months in advance. It is part of the fun for me. I enjoy scrolling through the myriad of links I have bookmarked, reading and re-reading tips and tricks about planning your vacation at Walt Disney World. I make lists and spreadsheets of what we want to try new, where we want to eat and any attractions or shows that are a must-see for each of our family members. I prepare a tentative touring plan for each day, with room for adjustments as needed.

Even though I love to plan, I never want to lose sight of what the basis of Disney is really about. The magic. In a recent visit to the Magic Kingdom, we arrived around 9:15 a.m. We began our visit by starting in Adventureland,  and the heading to Frontierland. We happened upon the Frontierland Hoedown where we participated in an impromptu bout of the Hokey Pokey. The kids had a blast with Brer Rabbit and the Country Bears.

Although I’m positive you can search and find the approximate times of the Hoedown each day, as well as when to search for PUSH or DiVine, the sense of magic and wonderment you and your children will experience by embracing the spontaneity will add some pixie dust to your day. I could have scheduled the Hoedown into our day, in fact, I have tried several times unsuccessfully. By allowing Disney to do what Disney does best, we were pleasantly surprised and thoroughly entertained.

Disney Parks continue to see an increase in visitors, both internationally and domestically, each year. While this may enhance the need for pre-planning some of your day, don’t forget to stop and take in your surroundings. You never know when a character might pop out of a hidden alcove, or a rowdy dating game (with bad jokes!) ensues, or be invited to participate in an impromptu game of Hokey Pokey.

Have you experienced any un-planned shows or characters appearing suddenly? Does it add just a bit of magic to your day or do you find it to be a hindrance? Do you prefer to plan to see these types of shows/interactions or would you rather leave them to happenstance?

Lisa writes here at Chip & Co. as well as her blog Adventures in Mousedom. As a local to Disney World, she offers a different insight into visiting the parks. If you’re super cool like Chip, you should check it out. Okay, even if you’re not super cool like Chip, you should check it out. Trust me. What’s the worst that could happen?
