The 10 Commandments of Walt Disney World

The 10 Commandments of Walt Disney World

There are some things that you just should not… SHOULD NOT do when you’re at Walt Disney World. They are major time pitfalls!  Think of them as being the 10 Commandments of Walt Disney World trips! Commit them to memory, recite them daily if you have to.

Just follow them, or risk a disaster of a trip! You wont wander Egypt, but WDW will feel just as big!

1) KNOW THY MAP- Before you even leave you should study Disney World maps like you were about to pick a college! Knowing WHERE things are in relativity to one another is KEY to using time wisely.  “Map readers”  waste precious moments of Disney time. Study!!! Buzz Lightyear is no-where near Haunted Mansion. Know this, and know it well. (Ps. my 8 year old son can actually close his eyes and visually walk you around the parks, so I know you can learn it too!) You can get FREE customized maps at http://customizedmaps.disney.go.com/

2) WAKE THYSELF EARLY – Prime time is park openings peeps! Be there for park openings and truck it to the rides that get insanely long FIRST. (those are listed in another commandment). Take a nap (like the Disney Diva has told you half a million times) in the middle of the day then it will be significantly easier to drag yourself up and out of your resort in time for the opening ceremony. Getting their early and staying late is the BEST way to do Disney. Get out during the time when everybody and their mama’s there (ie. heat of the day).

3) BOOK THYSELF CHARACTER MEALS– Major time pitfall…. standing in character lines. This can be easily avoided by doing 2-3 meals. (two for us because our kids dont like Pooh characters). All you really need is Chef Mickeys, Akershus, & Crystal Palace. At Chef Mickey’s you will get the “Fab 5” Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Donald, & Goofy. At Akershus you get Belle, Ariel, Cinderella, Snow White, or Jasmine. Crystal Palace knocks out Pooh, Piglet, Tigger & Eeyore. Hello, thats almost your whole autograph book full already! Schedule these early in your trip so you can just walk by and wave without your kids going into utter melt-down at you not stopping to get MORE of the same. Either way, don’t stand in those crazy long lines unless its your child’s most favorite character in the world.

4) BOOK THY CHARACTER MEALS AT GOOD TIMES – (online and 6 months in advance)We always do Chef Mickey breakfast first full-day 1 (about 7:45 if the magic kingdom opens at 9). This makes it possible to be at Magic Kingdom for park open. Akershus FOR SURE as a breakfast (the rest of the food wont be touched by the majority of Americanized kids) again 7:45am if park opens at 9. Crystal Palace is yummy at lunch and good at breakfast too. Crystal Palace gets you in early if you go for breakfast and there for rope drop (Rope drop makes it possible for you to get in to the actual lands), but I’m telling you that their Ratatouille is sooooo delicious at lunch!

5) DON’T BOOK THY TRIP HOLIDAY WEEKENDS – Yes, you’re off work… but SO IS EVERYBODY ELSE. If you really want shorter lines, less congestion and more fun think about those “random” times to go. For example, SEPTEMBER rocks at Disney, January, February (but not on MLK, Presidents Day, etc) and the first two weeks of May is usually pretty good as well. The months that have “spring break” and “fall break” are also bound to be more crowded. You have to be 32 flavors of CRAZY to do the 4th of July weekend and the week between Christmas and New Years is also INSANE. I know, some of you are going to go anyway, but you need to step up your planning game if you do, because its going to be VERY CROWDED.

6) USE THY CELL PHONE APPS THAT TELL PARK TIMES- If you have web access on your phone it will be your saving grace!! I have a droid and paid the subscription to the touringplans.com “Lines” app because, in my personal opinion, it is the best. It has it where you can update line waits as you see them and see other peoples wait updates (and how long ago they posted the wait). There are other ones. Droid has a free one that’s done by Undercover tourist called Disney World Times Lite. There are many other ones too. Its worth it. USE IT!

7) KNOW THY “LONG LINED” RIDES- There are rides that get crazy lines… CRAZY long lines which (I cannot understand WHY sometimes to be honest), but  its vitally important that you know WHICH ones those are in each park. You plan to go to those first. What I have noticed is that 1 hour after park opens these lines are going to be LONG for these rides. So if you don’t get them done in that first hour start using fast passes and move on or save them for another morning.
Magic Kingdom – DUMBO (has no fast pass), Peter Pan, Splash Mt., Big Thunder Mt., Space Mt., Buzz Lightyear, Pirates can get long (USE LEFT LANE IT IS SHORTER), and Jungle Cruise (which I cannot understand why the heck it gets long).
Epcot – RUN to Soarin’, Test Track, Mission Space can get long in summer, Spaceship Earth goes through shifts of busy and empty only go when its empty.
Hollywood Studios – RUN in a semi-psychotic way to Toy Story Mania (get the stroller later, rental/parking only takes time), Rockin Rollercoaster, Tower of Terror, Star Tours.
Animal Kingdom – Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Dinosaur (comes and goes in length)

8) DO THY LITTLE RIDES WHILE WAITING FOR FAST PASSES – As I mentioned before you do not go wait in one long line while waiting for a fast pass to come up. You do the smaller rides around it while waiting for your fast passes. Usually fast passes “come due” 1-2 hours after you get the actual ticket. So lets do a little scenario here.
FAST PASS- Splash Mountain.
WHILE WAITING – ride Aladdin’s Magic Carpets, Tiki Room, Pirates (if lines not long), , Country Bear Jamboree, Haunted Mansion, Liberty Bell.
EAT – Pecos Bill if you knock out all those rides quickly.
*If it’s an insanely long fast pass time (example Soarin’ you pick up fast-pass at 10:30 and its not coming up till 2) then normally it will give you a TIME when you can get another fp. Send someone to go and get another fp for a “long wait line” as soon as you can. For more help understanding fast passes read THIS post.

9) MARK THY STROLLER- I don’t know about you, but I’m spoiled now. When I park my car and walk in to a store on my cell phone, paying little to NO attention to where the heck I parked and not realizing it until I come back out, I hit the little button on my car that flashes the lights and makes a noise (over and over and over again). Unfortunately your stroller will not come with such a button. And they all look 100% identical. Let me highly recommend you go and buy some brightly colored ribbons. Think florescent orange or hot pink or lime green and wrap it around your stroller handle each day. People waste A LOT of time hunting for their strollers and some cast members seem to get their jollies by continuously re-arranging “stroller parking lots” so don’t expect it to be the same place you put it originally. Mark your stroller (and a balloon is not a good idea b/c there’s a billion of other people with them).

10) KNOW THY PARKING SPACE – At the end of the evening, lets face it, most people are cranky. Especially the people who did not choose to stay “on property”. You’ve not seen people CRAZY though until they cannot find their car. Super easy solution to this… whenever you park, as you are leaving to go to the tram take a picture with either your camera or your cell phone of the parking lot name and number. DO NOT FORGET TO DO THIS. It will save you a lot of drama and meltdowns later on. If you rent a car tie one of those brightly colored ribbons around your antenna (works the same as with your stroller). You might recognize your own car but not a rental car and pay for the GPS, it will save you major drama! (great present for those of you driving to disney this year).

Disney World Quick Tips – Planning your Disney World Budget

Disney World Quick Tips - Planning your Disney World Budget

There are very few people who visit Walt Disney World without having to carefully plan and budget their available funds. I use a very measured and logical (at least to me) approach for budgeting each of our visits. First – I always try to start early enough so I can plan how much money we can put aside on a monthly basis to meet our needs. We go often enough and have enough separation between visits so that we now have a permanent savings plan that covers all of our requirements.

Once you have an idea of how much you will have available you can then budget. Make sure that you consider everything. This is a list of the things we consider:

  1. PLANNING MATERIALS: This would cover guide books and any subscription websites you use. Remember there are a lot of free websites i.e. Chip and Co and Passporter where information is available either on the site or in a site’s discussion boards. Touring Plans is one of my favorite.
  2. AIRFARE OR OTHER TRAVEL: This can be a significant and variable expense. Be sure to consider baggage fees and perhaps parking fees at the airport. These things can add up quickly. Also remember that there is transportation from the airport and back but Disney’s Magical Express is both excellent and FREE. Try setting up an email alert on Airfare Watchdog.
  3. RESORT HOTEL: This can also be significant and remember that Disney does not add the 12.5% tax on the base prices they herald on the site or advertising. You won’t see this until you actually total up. There are a lot of choices so you have to pick the resort that meets your physical and monetary needs. By the way, the All Star Resorts are in a different county and the tax is 13%. Be sure to contact a Pixie Vacation Travel Agent who can answer any and all of your questions.
  4. PARK TICKETS: Pretty straight forward budgeting here, just don’t buy options you will not use. Also please remember, when you see a ticket price, it does not include the 6.5% tax until you total up.
  5. MEALS: This can be difficult to budget accurately and everything depends on your family‘s likes and eating habits. The various dining plans offered by Disney make budgeting food much easier if you can find one that meets your needs. Fear not, most people do well with at least one of the plans. Depending upon when you visit the Dining Plan might be free – be sure to ask!! Be sure to try our 100 Disney Foods to Eat Before you Die Challenge.
  6. SHOPPING AND OTHER EXTRAS: This is the most difficult category and only you know your family well enough to come up with a budget. I would suggest a daily limit and allow each individual to either spend it each day or carry it forward so they can do or buy whatever they want. This article might help Souvenirs for the Budget Conscious

This isn’t comprehensive by any means but just a group of ideas so that you can feel confident that you haven’t missed anything in your budgeting process. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Disney/Pixar Brave for Wii Video Game Review

Disney/Pixar Brave for Wii Video Game Review

Disney/Pixar have really struck it big with this movie, that’s for sure!  First Brave opens to astronomical figures when it opened, and now they’ve got Brave for the Wii Gaming System ready for you to take on all the challenges that Merida faced during the movie!

In Brave for the Wii, you are Merida, and you are searching for the secrets to transform your Mum from the Queen Bear back to just the Queen!  The game opens with your Mum already transformed into the bear — if you haven’t seen the movie yet, I apologize for revealing that — and you are chasing through the forest as you search for special clues to help you get rid of the Blight caused by Mor’du!

Along the way, you’ll have challenges to overcome, whether they be in the form of wolves and other creatures that would tear you up, or trying to solve puzzles with the help of your brothers — who are also bears, you might remember — as you and they solve which order to proceed to make an action take place.

Baby Okapi Welcomed at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Baby Okapi Welcomed at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

“Nafuna”, a 35-pound female baby Okapi, is the newest addition to Disney’s Animal Kingdom family.

Reported healthy after her first wellness exam, Nafuna, whose name means delivered feet first, was born on June 21st following a 14-month gestation period.

Guests will be able to catch a glimpse of Nafuna and first-time mom Zawadi a few months from now at Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s Ituri Forest. Father Akili currently lives on the savannah at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Considered rare in the wild, okapis are often thought as being related to the zebra because of their stripes. But okapis are in fact, related to the giraffe. Their natural habitat is the Ituri Forest, a dense rain forest in central Africa, which is often threatened by loggers, hunters and human settlements.  Currently, guests can see okapis when they ride the Kilimanjaro Safaris and when traveling along the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail.

Disney’s commitment to conservation and okapis extend beyond breeding. The Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund provides support for wildlife study, the protection of habitats and the development of community conservation and education programs in critical ecosystems around the world.  For more information visit Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund.

Okapi fun facts:

  • Okapi newborns can stand up within 30 minutes of birth and will nurse for the first time within an hour of birth. They have the same coloring as an adult but have a short fringe of hair along the spine, which generally disappears by the time they are 12 to 14 months old.
  • Okapi are typically solitary animals, living alone or in mother-offspring pairs.
  • Okapi’s stripes work as camouflage when hiding in the partial sunlight that filters through the forest canopies of Africa.
  • They are extremely wary and secretive, making okapi very difficult to observe in the lowland rainforest of central Africa where they make their home.
  • Adult okapi can reach weights of 550-720 pounds with females typically being larger than males. They can live over 30 years in zoological facilities.
  • Normally silent, female okapi vocalize with a soft “chuff” during courtship and when calling to their calves. There are infrasonic qualities to their call, which are below the frequency that the human ear can detect.

‘Treasure Planet’ Comes to Blu-ray July 3, 2012

'Treasure Planet' Comes to Blu-ray July 3, 2012

What I consider one of the most underrated animated Disney films of all time is finally coming to blu-ray on July 3. ‘Treasure Planet’ is a futuristic steam punk version of the Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’, which follows the adventure of Jim Hawkins who sets out on adventure across the universe as he sets out to find the fabled Treasure Planet. It’s a fun, and sadly overlooked, film from Disney’s nineties filmography, which is directed by Ron Clements and John Musket, who also did ‘The Great Mouse Detective’, ‘The Little Mermaid’, ‘Aladdin’, ‘Hercules’, and most recently, ‘The Princess and the Frog’. The film also features an excellent voice cast that includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt,  Roscoe Lee Browne, Emma Thompson, Martin Short, and David Hyde Pierce. I’m hoping this blu-ray release will give people who have never seen the movie before the chance to discover it for the first time, because this is one of Disney’s best animated films. It’s just so much fun and features some truly breathtaking animation. I can’t wait to add this to my collection. How about you? Are you a fan of ‘Treasure Planet’, or will you be discovering it for the first time thanks to this new Disney blu-ray release? Let me know in the comments below! Hit the jump for the full press release.

Disney Shares the “Science Behind the Magic”

Disney Shares the “Science Behind the Magic”

Pixie dust and fantasy make a visit to Walt Disney World Resort, magical. But recently a group of engineers, scientists and astrophysicists saw the magic in a different light during a special “Science Behind the Magic” presentation at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

Their eye-opening visit was part of NASA’s 25th annual International Space University Special Space Studies Program, which prepares post-graduate science and engineering students for careers in aeronautics. The nine-week program, sponsored by NASA, exposes professionals in aerospace, aeronautical, and other related fields to an intensive, unique educational experience.

Hosted by The Walt Disney World Resort and led by Michael Tschanz, Manager of Simulation and Analysis of the Engineering division, the one-day workshop attended by 175 participants illustrated the complex mathematical and physical models of ride systems, transportation systems, Audio-Animatronics and other technological innovations at the company.  In addition to their behind-the-scenes view, the group also spent the afternoon at Epcot.

Epcot’s Off Kilter Marks 15 Years of Music July 1 at Walt Disney World Resort

Epcot’s Off Kilter Marks 15 Years of Music July 1 at Walt Disney World Resort

This July 1, Epcot’s Off Kilter Celtic rock band will mark 15 years of performances at the Canada Pavilion in World Showcase.

Off Kilter founder Jamie Holton first started playing the bagpipes when he was 11, inspired by his family’s Scottish heritage and his father’s love for bagpipe music.

In addition to classic Celtic folk tunes, Off Kilter will often throw radio hits into the mix, like Bryan Adam’s “Summer of ’69″ or Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s “Takin’ Care of Business.” (Both Canadian bands, by the way.) If you’re lucky enough to hear Off Kilter play “Farewell to Nova Scotia,” don’t be surprised if it suddenly sounds a whole lot like “Mickey Mouse March (The Mickey Mouse Club March).”

Entertainment is subject to change. Check the park’s Times Guide for more.

BYOPD Bring Your Own Pixie Dust: A Quick Tip to Creating Your Own Magic

BYOPD Bring Your Own Pixie Dust: A Quick Tip to Creating Your Own Magic

Are you looking for a way to make your vacation extra-magical? Disney does great at sprinkling unexpected pixie dust, but what if you want to create your own? One perfect way I have found is by leaving trinkets out for the family to find when returning to the room for a mid-day break.

Not to worry, I have found some very budget friendly ways to accomplish this, even with my family of five.

All of these things can cost less than a dollar per person. You can pick up a pack of pens or stickers for $1 at most stores and separate them out reducing the cost even more. I like to type up a little note each day using a unique looking font.  The kids enjoy this and it nips the “I don’t wanna go back to the room” complaint in the bud. They’re excited to go back to the room for a rest so they can see what surprise they have for that day. Parental meltdown averted, day saved, magic restored, kids rested — what could be better for less than a buck a day?

Do you leave small gifts for your kids? If you do, what is the coolest thing you’ve found to spread a little pixie dust of your own?

Lisa writes here at Chip & Co. as well as her blog Adventures in Mousedom. As a local to Disney World, she offers a different insight into visiting the parks. If you’re super cool like Chip, you should check it out. Okay, even if you’re not super cool like Chip, you should check it out. Trust me. What’s the worst that could happen?

Disney World Dining on a Budget – Tips & Tricks to Save Money

Disney World Dining on a Budget - Tips & Tricks to Save Money

Not everyone out there can always afford to get the mack daddy Disney Deluxe Dining Plan, especially with so many people waiting for Free Dining Deals to come out. It would be safe to say that many people are on a budget. With our economy still struggling everyone is learning to maximize what they have.

With that in mind I have compiled a list of Tips & Tricks I have learned over the years visiting Walt Disney World to help you save money.
