‘High Fidelity’ Comes to Blu-ray August 7, 2012

'High Fidelity' Comes to Blu-ray August 7, 2012

Another one of my favorite John Cusack films, ‘High Fidelity’ is coming to blu-ray on August 7, 2012. The film follows Cusack’s character Rob, a record store owner, who after getting dumped by his current girlfriend, decides to figure out what he did wrong in his past relationships by looking up his old flames. The movie is a hilarious movie from the same team that brought together ‘Grosse Point Blank’, so in a way, I think I was destined to love it. The movie is based on the novel ‘High Fidelity’ by Nick Hornby. This is just a really fun movie, and it’s one of the few DVDs I have left in my collection, so I’m really looking forward to getting it on blu-ray! I can’t wait. Do I have another other ‘High Fidelity’ fans out there? Let me know in the comments below, here on Chip and Company! Hit the jump for the full press release.

‘Treasure Planet: 10th Anniversary’ Blu-ray Review

'Treasure Planet: 10th Anniversary' Blu-ray Review

One of my all favorite animated Disney films since it came out has been ‘Treasure Planet’. The film, an adaptation from Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’, landed in theaters with nothing more than a dull thud when it was originally released. But those who saw it seemed to fall in love with this new, futuristic telling of Stevenson’s classic tale, myself included. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the directors of ‘Aladdin’,  ‘The Little Mermaid’, and ‘Princess and the Frog’, and featuring a brilliant cast including Joseph Gordon, David Hyde Pierce, Martin Short, and Emma Thompson, ‘Treasure Planet’ is another strong, but misunderstood title, from Walt Disney Animation that everyone deserves to give a chance.

Visiting Disney World – Slow down and pay attention

Visiting Disney World - Slow down and pay attention

When you visit Walt Disney World Resort, slow down and pay attention. It’s impossible to see and do everything in one Park visit anyway, so try not to get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of doing it all that you overlook what makes the place so magical.

It’s tempting to take touring plans in hand and race from one attraction to the next or to watch your watch closely and time each curtain call. Gotta catch that bus, make the dinner reservation, sprint back for your Fast Pass slot.

Don’t be so rushed you forget to notice the details.

Top 5 Reasons to Experience the Keys to the Kingdom Tour

Top 5 Reasons to Experience the Keys to the Kingdom Tour

Want to know more about Walt Disney World? Do you want to go behind the scenes and see and experience the parks in a whole new way? Walt Disney World, as usual, has you covered with a variety of tours to choose from; and recently, I decided to take the plunge and experience Disney’s Keys to the Kingdom Tour!

The Keys to the Kingdom tour lasts about 4 to 5 hours or so and takes place in the Magic Kingdom! The tour teaches guests about the Disney “keys” to success, as well as some Disney history, secrets, and how Disney puts on a show.

While I won’t give everything away, I will let you in on the top 5 reasons you should experience the Keys to the Kingdom Tour yourself, as well as what magic awaits during your experience!

Disney developing sequel to Hocus Pocus

Disney developing sequel to Hocus Pocus

Fans of the 90’s flick Hocus Pocus with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy can now rejoice. According to Moivehole Disney has began work on a sequel to this 90’s hit.

“Hocus Pocus 2 : Rise of the Elderwitch” (working title) is only in the development stages at the moment but the plan is to have the film in front of audiences sometime next year. I would image around Halloween.

No word if any of the previous cast is scheduled to sign on considering the popularity of many of the members like Sarah Jessica Parker.

Keep an eye on Chip and Co as we get more details we will share them.

What do you think? Were you a fan of the original film? I remember working at the theaters when it came out and it was mildly popular.

Boo!

The Street Entertainment of Epcot’s World Showcase

The Street Entertainment of Epcot's World Showcase

When we tour the World Showcase at Epcot, we are so impressed by the beauty of the surroundings and the majesty of the buildings that we tend to think that’s what it is. There is so much more in the World Showcase that when you stop to consider the scope of the place it’s mind boggling. Today I’ll cover the current entertainment opportunities and tomorrow I’ll deal with what is beyond the facades of the various buildings.

There is some type of “street entertainment” or diversion at virtually every pavilion and it is really only in the last few visits to Walt Disney World that I have begun to appreciate them (I think that as we get older we appreciate these things even more). I’ll start at the Mexico Pavilion and go clockwise around the World Showcase. Please remember that there is so much and things are always changing so I may miss one or two:

Nothing quite says summer to me like an outdoor concert, and guests visiting Epcot this month are in for a real treat thanks to the Sounds Like Summer Concert Series.

The series showcases the talents of some of the world’s greatest tribute bands at the American Gardens Theatre in World Showcase. I’ve seen this weekend’s band, Slippery When Wet ~ The Ultimate Bon Jovi Tribute, perform previously, and it’s amazing how much they sound like the real thing!

The schedule (entertainment subject to change without notice):

  • July 6-7: Slippery When Wet ~ The Ultimate Bon Jovi Tribute
  • July 8-14: The Police Experience ~ A Tribute to the Police
  • July 15-21: SouthBound and Company ~ A Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd

Can I Upgrade My Park Hoppers to an Annual Pass?

Can I Upgrade My Park Hoppers to an Annual Pass?

Yes you can!

Did you know the date your annual pass starts is the first day you use your park hopper, so if your first park day was December 1st and you upgraded to an annual pass on December 7th, your pass would be backdated to December 1st.  The cost of your pass is the difference between what your park hopper is worth and the cost of an Annual Pass.

Note that you can completely use up your park hopper and still upgrade it if it’s within the 14-day period.  You can even update it from home, although it’s a lot easier to do it at Disney World.

One thing.  If you bought your park hoppers tickets from a discount broker like Undercover Tourist, you probably paid $10 or $20 less than what Disney charges.  Use your park hopper at least one day and you’ll get the full Disney price that day (even if you bought your tickets prior to a price increase).   If you don’t use it, they’ll only give you the price that you paid your discount broker. It’s a funny little quirk with the system, but it will save you money, which is nice when you’re buying multiple passes.

Hope this helps!

Disney World Quick Tips: Ten Tips for First Timers

Disney World Quick Tips: Ten Tips for First Timers

You’ve just booked your first trip to Walt Disney World! Yay! Congratulations! Feel the excitement rush through your veins! Bask in that after-booking glory. But…then what?

Well, don’t you fret, dearies! I have compiled a short list of my top ten tips for anyone visiting Disney World for the first, or fiftieth, time.

  1. Arrive early. When using Disney Transportation, you need to give yourself at least an hour to get to your destination. I strongly suggest arriving 20 minutes prior to park opening. You will never believe the amount of touring you can get done in the three hours before most everyone else gets out of bed and decides where they’re going for the day. Not only do you beat the crowd, but during the hotter months, you can beat the heat as well.
  2. Use both sides. When you’re standing in line for the turnstiles, at bag check or at a quick service restaurant, most people do not realize that there are lines on both the right and left side of the cast member.
  3. Gum. You cannot purchase gum at any of the four major theme parks. However, a very little known fact is the Clubhouse Shop at ESPN Wide World of Sports does carry a very limited amount of gum. If you’re in desperation, hop a bus to one of the All-Star resorts and head on over to the WWoS to satisfy that gum craving. Please be aware that this shop is not open 365 days a year. Check with the front desk of your hotel to determine whether it’s open or closed.
  4. Fastpasses. Fastpasses are free. Learn about them. Utilize them. A fastpass can save a substantial amount of time in peak season.
  5. Smartphones. If you have a smartphone, download Disney’s Mobile Magic app to keep an eye on wait times, have a map readily available and and review important information of attraction when you are inside a Disney Park.
  6. Transportation. Disney offers a variety of free transportation options. Yes, you read that correctly. Free. If you don’t have a car, you don’t have to rent one. Once on property, you have several choices of how to get around. There are buses, boats and monorails. What’s available depends on where you’re coming from and where you’re going. Inquire at the front desk if you’re reading this from your hotel. If you’re still at home, Chip & Company can help you by clicking here.
  7. Love Coca Cola. Open Happiness. There are no Pepsi products to be found while on Disney property. If you absolutely must have Pepsi, bring it from home. Don’t forget to try Club Cool!
  8. YouTubeIf you have little ones, you can pump up their excitement or gauge their timidness of some of the attractions by looking them up on YouTube.
  9. Park Hoppers.  If you plan on visiting more than one park per day, you must purchase a Park Hopper, you cannot use another day on your ticket to enter a second park on the same day.
  10. Times Guide/Park Maps. So you’re not really a planner, eh? No sweat, just be sure to grab a Park Map and a Times Guide (or download the app mentioned in #5) and quickly go over it to see what you’re interested in doing. Grab a nearby Cast Member and ask what the most popular attraction is and head there first to either ride or grab a Fastpass. From there, just begin working your way around the park and enjoy the spontaneity of your vacation!

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are entire books devoted to helping you have the best Disney vacation possible. What tips can you offer someone visiting a Disney Park for the first time? Can you offer some insight on what to do/not do on a Disney vacation?

Top 5 Favorite World Showcase Pavilions

Top 5 Favorite World Showcase Pavilions

World Showcase is one of the most popular areas at Disney World and at the top of our list when we visit. Who doesn’t like traveling around the world in an afternoon, experiencing different cultures, cuisine, products, architecture, and dining experiences!

Of the nine different Epcot World Showcase Pavilions, which are packed full of things to see and do, everyone has their own favorite; but today, we are listing my Top 5 favorite pavilions and why we love them!

1. Norway Pavilion-This pavilion is our favorite because there is so much great stuff here! Norway transports me to a Norwegian village and back in time to the days of the Vikings! Norway is home to Akershus Storybook Dining, it’s one of my favorite character meals and restaurants. Here adults can experience delicious Norwegian fare while their own little princesses meet a variety of Disney princesses! Norway also has an attraction, Maelstrom, a boat ride through Norway‘s history and mythology. It’s actually pretty good too! In addition to this pavilions shops, there is also the Stave Church to explore; and if you get hungry, visit the Kringla Og Bakeri for some famous school bread and then enjoy it at the nearby seating area with grass growing on the roof!

2. United Kingdom Pavilion-This pavilion is interesting to me because of the history and variety of architecture and detail found here, particularly in the different buildings. Also, who doesn’t enjoythe popular Rose and Crown Pub and Yorkshire Fish and Chips! I like to shop too and the United Kingdom is a great place to do just that. There is also a vast variety of merchandise available here ranging from the Beatles to perfume to British toys and even tea. Tucked near the back of this pavilion is a quiet sitting area which provides a nice escape from the crowds; and you can often find entertainers performing on the street! Also, if you’re a big Disney character fan, as I am, the United Kingdom is a great place to find a vast quantity of Disney characters such as Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins, Alice, the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, and sometimes more!

3. France Pavilion-This beautiful pavilion is full charm and detail, and who wouldn’t enjoy seeing the Eiffel Tower in the background? The shopping here is great by the way. I always have to do some browsing while I’m here. I especially like the home decor, mini-Eiffel Towers, and perfume. There’s also two table service restaurants here: Les Chefs de France and Bistro de Paris. Les Chefs de France is one of my favorite WDW restaurants; and throughout the day, Remy from Pixar’s Ratatouille stops by! Be sure to France thoroughly on your visit as it goes back farther than many realize to reveal another shop and one of World Showcase’s best bakeries, La Boulangerie Patisserie. I also enjoy this pavilion due its location next to the International Gateway, where you can hop on a “Friendship” boat to visit the Epcot Resorts or continue on to Hollywood Studios.

4. Germany Pavilion-This is a popular pavilion with many guests, including myself. The Germany pavilion takes you into the pages of a classic fairytale with it’s clocktowers, turrets, and German village design. Here you can grab a meal at the Biergarten Restaurant or Sommerfest and do some serious shopping! There is a variety of German merchandise, such as Christmas ornaments, steins, toys, cuckoo clocks, soccer gear, and crystal jewelry. If you have a sweet tooth, like me, you must drop in the new Karamell Kuche for traditional caramel candies or some unique, caramel treats! Also, take some time to enjoy the minature train village nearby, kids and adults both enjoy it.

5. China Pavilion-I like Canada because it’s different than most World Showcase pavilions. Tucked behind its shops, which represent both Canada‘s rugged, Northwestern culture and elegant, European architecture, is a little piece of the Canadian Rockies. Several paths and bridges take you over little streams and by a waterfall on your way to a tribute film about Canada starring Martin Short, and it’s totally cool that the theater is nestled inside of a replica mine! For fellow shoppers, like myself, be sure to spend some time exploring The Northwest Mercantile; and everyone should walk through the peaceful and picturesque gardens. Need another reason why this pavilion is my favorite? Le Cellier! This is seriously one of the best restaurants at WDW property. Plus, one of World Showcase’s most popular entertainment groups, Off Kilter, can be found here!

So those are my Top 5 choices for my favorite World Showcase pavilions. What did you think? What is your favorite World Showcase pavilion?
